Reed under 9s go top!

Reed Under 9s were again on their travels to previously unbeaten Broxbourne. Having 2 games scheduled over 2 days, Reed near on had a complete change of team from the team picked for the Sunday game, to ensure that all players were picked to play a game. Batting first Reed, Josh (10) and Seb were tied down by the best opening bowling we had seen this year, taking Reed to 216. Before Rebecca (5 not out) and Rose (6) including a belting 4 put on a further 18. Young Isaac (4 not out) and James took Reed to 253. Before our steady rocks at the end Harry (7 not out) and Jack (7 not out) with great tip and run took us to a good score of 267 for 5. In reply Reed got off to our best bowling start of the season, not bowling a wide for 21 balls. This may seem a small improvement but something that the coaches have been working on at training. Reed bowled tight and straight throughout and wickets were taken by James (1-9), Rebecca (1-15), Seb (1-4) and Josh (1-1). Both Josh and Isaac (0-3) bowled 12 balls with only 1 ball being hit off the bat. Reed ended up winning by 38 runs with Broxbourne finishing on 229-5. The Reed coach Simon Jackson, was ecstatic after the game saying "Broxbourne were a strong side who bowled really well but through sensible batting and running we got a good total of 267. And then through tight bowling and fielding, including a great catch by Rebecca and a direct hit run out by Seb, gave Broxbourne no chances at all. It was a great game played in a good [...]

Game, Set & Match versus Godmanchester!

This week may have seen the start of the Wimbledon tennis tournament but it also saw an epic Under 15 cricket match on the Reed Green. Our first league win resembled a top seed being slayed on centre court! Godmanchester were unbeaten in the U15 Premier Division of the Cambs Youth Cricket League since their switch from the Hunts league and we were yet to record our first victory. The game went down to the wire and our first win delighted our boys, many of whom have worked very hard to improve. Manager Rich Barlow was forced to shuffle the pack again but we are fortunate to now have lots of U14 and 15 players signed-on having had to concede the reverse fixture due to a lack of availability! We won the toss and elected to field on another nice evening. Charlie Walters (2-14) showed his increased pace and controlled the ball well to prize the wickets of "Goddy's" openers. Dom Longland and Matt Ladds (2-13) also bowled from the pavilion end and utilised the slope well; Ladds was particularly impressive taking a wicket with his first ball on his league debut! Just like the previous night the score we had to chase didn’t appear huge, 120 for 5, Walters (53) and Sanderson (32) were conservative in their reply against some menacing bowlers. As per the previous night again Vincent was thrown in at the deep end however he and Archie M stayed calm under pressure to record an eight-wicket victory. Many parents who have seen the previous games will have seen the boys getting closer to victory but I’m sure many didn’t perceive this against a big gun like Godmanchester. The challenge for them [...]

Small margins at Shelford

Our U15s continued their league campaign with a visit to Little Shelford on Thursday evening. The hosts were packed full of Cambridgeshire County players and we belied our "underdog" tag eventually just losing out by 17 runs. We continued our improvement in the field, captain Sam Osborne showed some athletic ground fielding and Dom Longland showed a safe pair of hands to catch a threatening Aubrey (22) in the deep after a booming hit down to him at long-off from the bowling of Cambridge (1-17). With a tight boundary on one side Shelford's final score of appeared at the time to not be insurmountable. Sanderson and Osborne set about it in their normal steady fashion. Osbourne (51) timed the ball well and made use of the fast outfield. Sanderson (22) unfortunately departed after being run-out looking to up the scoring rate. Jacob Vincent (26) came in and found himself in a crucial moment in the match again with the run rate creeping up, he showed real intent and is appearing to benefit from experiences such as these. Oli Tapsell (9), Oli Cambridge (3), Cook (1) and George Wood (12) also tried to get us over the line with a do or die attitude but eventually we fell just short in the final overs, we can be content with our score of 146 and as fate would have it some magic was about to happen the next evening on the Reed Green. Under 13s climb up the table

With Reed on a winning streak, the visit of St. Margaretsbury was hotly anticipated - as these matches are often closely-fought. After a season of training, we were able to offer league debuts for both Effie Bone and Scarlett Blaney….. Forming a team comprised of a mix of experience and unfamiliarity. St. Margaretsbury won the toss and elected to Bat first…. The opening Bowling of Callum Ricketts, Daniel Vincent and Tom Green looked strong, Daniel taking an early clean-bowled wicket and Tom Green collecting dots for fun. With one wayward ball speeding past the backstop for 4, Daniel finished his spell 3-0-1-11, and Tom Green ended on 3-0-0-14. St. Margaretsbury were on 34 for 1 after 7 overs. A steady start…. Which changed rapidly when SM attacked the middle-order bowlers… putting on 44 runs in the next 4 overs. The SM opener retired on 35 in the 11th over having crashed a 6 over the boundary. Charlie Cannon joined the bowling attack and immediately had an impact, taking a wicket with his 4th ball and giving away nothing…. ending his spectacular spell with 3-1-2-7…. And SM on 96-3 off 16. Reed were back in the match. Debutants Scarlett (1-0-0-7) and Effie (1-0-0-5); along with William Longfield-King (1-0-0-4), Oliver Tallis (1-0-0-7) and Sam Dawson (1-0-0-9) ably supporting the main bowlers. Callum finished the innings with two tight overs and a wicket, finishing 3-0-1-13. SM ended on 120-4…. A tough ask. Reed started the batting with the unusual, but normally exciting, pair of Daniel Vincent and Charlie Cannon… And they got off to a flyer. Attacking one end on particular, they accumulated 26 runs in 21 balls before Charlie fell LBW (13), followed immediately by Oliver Tallis [...]

First league match for U15s

We hosted local village Thriplow in bizarrely our first league game near the end of June! This was because of postponements due to rain in May and our cup run. We lost the toss and were asked to field in a game reduced to 18 overs with yet another chance of rain possible. We managed to dodge the rain though and it made for an exciting game that ebbed and flowed. We were set 129 runs to win after Sanderson, Archer and Osborne had all taken wickets. Longland also found the edge twice and Mitchell had a chance shelled in the deep. Needless to say it was the 93 second wicket partnership that proved frustrating and contributed to a solid Thriplow total. Sanderson struggled slightly in the fading light and was bowled for 4. Mitchell (13) and Vincent (15) did support the in-form Osborne (51) though as we fell 20 runs short in an entertaining game on the Green. Credit to Osborne and Brent (7) for both striking 6s, Osborne’s was particularly impressive in to one of our neighbours gardens! This week we travel to Little Shelford on Thursday then host Godmanchester on Friday. We are also hoping to involve many of our U15s on the Chairman’s and President's Days on Sunday 11th July and Sunday 1st August respectively. Match report submitted by Richard Barlow.

Under 9s back to winning ways

Reed Under 9s who hadn't won since early May got back to winning ways on Friday evening at home to North Enfield. The whole focus of the team is for enjoyment, improving the young players, giving all players games which does mean continual rotation of the players. After winning the toss Josh (9) and Seb (14) got Reed off to the normal good start with them taking us to 236 at the end of 4 over despite losing a wicket on the last ball of the pair. Our middle order of Frankie, Poppy, Isaac (making debut at 6 years old) and Toby set us up for a great platform for Jack (21) and William (17) to take the game to North Enfield and smash the ball all over Reed, giving Reed a total of 307-3 net - which was our highest score of the season and importantly the least amount of wickets we had lost. All Reed bowlers bowled well and tight and we bowled the least amount of wides we had done in a game. Poppy and Frankie have progressed massively over the season and despite going wicketless they only went for 10 and 7 runs in their 2 overs. However the game changed in the 8th over of the innings when Seb (3 for 8) got a superbly bowled hat-trick. Then in over 15 Josh (3 for 8) got 2 wickets in an over. Coach Simon Jackson was ".... so pleased with the performance and the improvement the players have made in all parts of the cricket game over the season. Each game we always have some stand out batting and bowling which is always great to see but at the same time [...]

U13s winning ways continue

Reed U13s win again.... In a low-scoring game, the efficient bowling of the U13s paid dividends. After losing the toss and being put in to bat, Reed got off to a flyer, scoring 17 off the first two overs, before a flurry of wickets left Reed reeling. With Daniel Vincent (1), Charlie Hawker (1) and Tash McNamara (0) back in the shed and Reed on 27 for 3 in the 5th over. Charlie Cannon came on for a quick-fire 8 before being bowled, quickly followed by Aaron Nash (1). Reed were on 52 for 5 in the 7th over and things were looking ominous. Callum was running out of partners, and running out of time before enforced retirement on 30.... With Eddie Cook coming in to bat, the familiar partnership settled things down... Scoring steadily for 4 overs before Eddie top-edged one to the keeper for 5. With the retirement total in his sights, Callum attempted to launch one but was caught on 29. Things were looking familiar with Stanley Johnson joining Matthew Barons in the middle... The partnership that just failed to get Reed over the line against Hertford earlier in the season. This time around, Matthew forcing the singles (lesson learned), scoring a season-best 10 runs before being caught out. Stanley (1) saw the innings home with Lily Hall (0). Reed scored 94 runs, and needed to bowl well. And Reed's bowling was first class.... Daniel Vincent opened the innings with a maiden, followed by just 3 runs off Callum Ricketts first over. Hertford got two boundaries off Daniel's second over, but when he finished his spell, Daniel had a second maiden... 3-2-0-12. Keeping an over in hand for the end, Callum added [...]

It’s a Super 6 for Reed Under 11s!

For the 2021 Season Reed Under 11s entered the Herts Junior Cricket League “Hard Ball - 11-a-Side” format competition and have been placed in League 4 with opponents from Welwyn Garden City, Letchworth, Stevenage, Hitchin and Datchworth. To date, with 6 of the 10 league matches played, Reed have a 100% Winning Record, and sit top of the League, clear by 33 points. Due to the extremely wet May weather, Reeds first league match did not take place until 1st June when on a fine summers evening at Reed they dismissed Stevenage for just 36 before comfortably knocking off the required runs scoring their 37 - 2 in just 9 overs. Reed Captain Josh Heslam produced the first of several devastating opening spells of bowling this season with 3 wickets, supported by Harrison S, Jon Green and younger brother Eddie Heslam picking up the remainder of the Stevenage wickets. Josh Heslam and Ethan Fox then began what has become a prolific opening partnership taking the team to the verge of victory before two late wickets and the winning runs assured by Heslam and Reed Number 4 Henry Cook. The following week saw 3 wins in 4 evenings! On Monday night Reed recorded a comfortable win against Hitchin (Reed 131-5 off 20 Overs - Hitchin 98 All Out off 18.5 Overs). After a fast scoring but eventful first few overs, Reed were thankful to a fine 5th wicket partnership by Joseph Rhodes and Rory Longland who both reached retirement scores of 25 and 28. With the ball Josh Heslam and Toby Cook tore through the Hitchin top order with 3 wickets a piece to set Reed on the path to victory. The boys then followed up [...]
