Reed U15s need to rebuild after injuries

After a bruising encounter at Ickleford in the T20 cup, Reed were without 3 experienced players for their league match against Welwyn Garden City. With Callum (Broken Toe), Jamie (Knee) and Daniel (Back) unavailable to bowl, the next few weeks are going to be tough for the U15s players. Fortunately, Daniel is still able to take the field to bat, and his experience in the field will help the younger players coming through. Welwyn won the toss and elected to field. A completely new opening pairing of Daniel and Eddie saw off the opening bowlers and reached 29 for 0 from 6 overs (with WGC opening bowler Vinnakota going for just 3 runs from his 2 overs) before Eddie was caught on 5 from 22 balls. In an error from the umpires, the batters crossing was not reversed, and Daniel was bowled by a ball that died in the wicket next ball (13 from 18). Then a quickfire 5 from 3 from Charlie Cannon before being caught in the next over. Reed were in trouble. When Stanley Johnson was caught in the next (9th) over it was up to Lewis Karim and Sam Dawson to make a stand if Reed were to post a defendable score. A partnership of 31 runs came to an end when Karim (30 from 24) was caught. Sam continued to show composure in the middle, while a succession of partners were dismissed at the other end. U15s close out win against Welwyn

The opening partnership of Jacob Vincent and Oli Cambridge were hoping to get the team to a solid start, which was quickly thwarted when Jake played across the line to a straight ball and was bowled for 0. He was swiftly followed by Jake Garner, who was the wrong side of a dubious LBW decision. Reed found themselves on 12 for 2 from 3 overs. George Wood and Cambridge steadied the ship for a few overs, rotating the strike and punishing poor balls before George was caught for 10. Reed were on 37/3. Charlie Cannon went out and he and Cambridge decided to punish any wayward bowling, the pair putting on 31 runs until Cannon got caught for 8 runs in the 12th over, replaced by Dom Longland. Cambridge was run out in the next over, failing to slide his bat attempting a quick run... A quality 33 runs from 34 balls had brought Reed back into the match. Oli Tapsell came in, but fell in the following over on 8. Reed were 83 for 6 in the 14th. Charlie Browne went to the crease for the first time this season and didn't disappoint. Dom and Browne put on a partnership of 30 runs before Dom fell to a spectacular catch at mid-on. (23 from 15). U15s composed against Welwyn

After two tough league games, Reed’s U15 team visited Welwyn and into the unknown. Reed won the toss and elected to bat. The opening pairing of Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge started steadily and then rapidly accelerated the run-rate after 4 tight overs. Good communication and quick singles were interspersed with plenty of boundaries. Jacob retired with a boundary bringing up 42 off 29 balls; the opening partnership having reached 79. Ollie C fell in the next over on 18. With George Wood and Ollie Tapsell new to the crease the expectation was for the run rate to stall, but it didn’t. Ollie T and Wood took the initiative and peppered the boundary. Wood finished on 21 from 16, Ollie T on 16 from 15 balls. With the innings reaching the final stages, Eddie Cook blasted 2 quick boundaries before being bowled. Daniel Vincent (1) and Jake Garner (2) seeing out the final few balls. Reed had set a defendable score of 146 for 4. In a shake-up, the ex-U13 dream team of Callum Ricketts and Daniel Vincent opened the bowling with a view to keeping the openers quiet. With Daniel’s pace variation, and Callum’s spin bamboozling the openers, the first 5 overs went for just 18 runs. Callum Ricketts struck in the 6th after Welwyn attempted to accelerate. Holding his nerve after two boundaries, Callum clean-bowled the opening batter. With Welwyn playing expansive cricket, Reed continued the seam / spin combination with Ollie Tapsell and Ollie Cambridge. Reed go out with a flourish

At the end of a disappointing season in the Premier League, the Firsts left it with a spirited display against perennial powerhouses Welwyn. Having inserted the opposition, skipper Tom Greaves must have been delighted to see them reduced to 15 for 3 thanks to an opening attack of Matt Giblin (2 for 16) and Toby Fynn (1 for 28). However the entry of ex-England star Owais Shah and Mohammed Rizvi proved to be match changing as the pair built a stand of 112, despite some economical bowling from this year's find, Kapil Dave, who conceded just 28 runs from his 10 overs and often troubled the batsmen. When Shah was finally stumped by Sean Tidey off Greaves for 62 it only served to bring in Van Der Westhuisen who contributed 38 in another century stand with Rizvi. 51 came from the last 4 overs as Rizvi finished on 125 not out, although Rupert Martin took two wickets in the last over as Welwyn totalled 250 for 6. Reed started in fine form with Rob Lankester (47) and William Heslam (41) compiling a century opening stand, only for both to be dismissed pulling in consecutive overs. Greaves then took responsibility for the scoring, making 35 in quick time, only to be out caught in similar fashion. With the innings now petering out, Tidey took control hitting 5 boundaries, but he could not protect the tail and was bowled attempting another big hit, last out for 29. Reed made a commendable total of 189, despite a number of regular players being unavailable. It’s a Super 6 for Reed Under 11s!

For the 2021 Season Reed Under 11s entered the Herts Junior Cricket League “Hard Ball - 11-a-Side” format competition and have been placed in League 4 with opponents from Welwyn Garden City, Letchworth, Stevenage, Hitchin and Datchworth. To date, with 6 of the 10 league matches played, Reed have a 100% Winning Record, and sit top of the League, clear by 33 points. Due to the extremely wet May weather, Reeds first league match did not take place until 1st June when on a fine summers evening at Reed they dismissed Stevenage for just 36 before comfortably knocking off the required runs scoring their 37 - 2 in just 9 overs. Reed Captain Josh Heslam produced the first of several devastating opening spells of bowling this season with 3 wickets, supported by Harrison S, Jon Green and younger brother Eddie Heslam picking up the remainder of the Stevenage wickets. Josh Heslam and Ethan Fox then began what has become a prolific opening partnership taking the team to the verge of victory before two late wickets and the winning runs assured by Heslam and Reed Number 4 Henry Cook. The following week saw 3 wins in 4 evenings! On Monday night Reed recorded a comfortable win against Hitchin (Reed 131-5 off 20 Overs - Hitchin 98 All Out off 18.5 Overs). After a fast scoring but eventful first few overs, Reed were thankful to a fine 5th wicket partnership by Joseph Rhodes and Rory Longland who both reached retirement scores of 25 and 28.
