Summer Frustration continues for developing U13s

In the second of four summer league matches, a developing Reed team travelled to St. Margaretsbury, who fielded a team strengthened by their district and county players. Reed won the toss and elected to bowl. SM started strongly, with boundaries in the first 2 overs, but Daniel Vincent took a liking to the Zinger stumps - sending the flashing bails flying on three occasions, finishing on 3-0-3-10. Callum Ricketts supporting with 0-11 off his first 2 overs (ending with 3-0-0-18) Gethin Hill followed with a wicket off his first ball, ending with 2-0-1-8. Eddie Cook trapping the SM batsman LBW for 0, ending 2-0-1-10.... At this point, Reed were on top, with SM on 54 for 5 off 9 overs, but the SM middle order proved resilient against the developing Reed bowlers. With Reed deciding to share the bowling among every player, SM took advantage - scoring strongly in the middle overs and putting on a 50+ partnership before Aaron Nash took the 6th wicket caught and bowled. Two superb run-outs curbed the run rate, with SM finishing on 126. A tough target with several of Reed's stronger batsmen missing from the line-up. The opening pairing of Eddie Cook and Callum Ricketts were subjected to the county-representative opening bowlers, Eddie mis-judged a ball when it kept low after 4 successive bouncers in the first over - departing without troubling the scorer.... Young Sam Dawson arrived at the crease. Up until now, Sam had faced a maximum of 13 balls in an innings and had a top score of 3 runs. Callum and Sam dug in... And while the run rate stuttered, the sight of Sam truly enjoying himself in the middle put a smile on [...]

U13s season ends in damp squib

Reed hosted Bishop's Stortford in the last match of the Herts Junior League season knowing that only victory would secure 3rd spot in the Division. BS won the toss, put Reed into bat and were immediately rewarded when Charlie Cannon lofted the first ball to the fielder at mid-off. BS rotated the bowling among all their players, and some impressive seam bowling kept Reed struggling for runs. Having learned lessons from early in the season Reed stole singles from every opportunity. Eddie Cook was given LBW in the 5th over (3). Tom Green joined Daniel Vincent at the crease, immediately upping the urgency. Tom and Daniel put on 28 runs before Daniel fell on 20, attempting his 4th successive slog into cow corner - finding the fielder instead of the boundary. Tom was caught behind in the next over for 7. With two new batsmen at the crease (Callum Ricketts and Aaron Nash) the bowling rotation returned to the openers and a quick ball took Callum's middle stump. Callum departed on 1 and Aaron was left to hold the fort with several inexperienced players left in the pavilion. Aaron found form at just the right time; batting sensibly and seeing off the seamers, before attacking... sending two loose deliveries to the boundary. One attacking shot too many saw his middle stump dislodged. A visibly nervous Tash McNamara performed admirably, scoring 4. Oliver Tallis rejoiced avoiding a golden duck, and celebrated every one of his 5 balls - Especially the quick-run 2, and even his slog to the fielder... The right shot choice, just not the execution it required. Stanley Johnson scored a stoic 1 Not Out. Charlie Ward the last man out without troubling the [...]

Hat-trick not enough to save Reed

Reed Under 13s entertained undefeated Broxbourne 1s on an overcast evening. With Broxbourne cruising at the top of the table, and Reed on a winning streak, this was looking to be an entertaining fixture. A battle between the free-flowing batting of Broxbourne, against the unpredictable bowling of Reed. Whichever way this went, Reed needed a healthy haul of points to keep in the race for 3rd place. With Broxbourne winning the toss and electing to bat, Reed's start couldn't have been better. The first choice opening bowling pairing of Daniel Vincent and Callum Ricketts stepping up to face Broxbourne batsmen who have scored freely all season. Daniel opened strongly, with just 2 runs off the first over, before Callum strolled in and bowled an over of a lifetime... Dot Dot WICKET (ct Eddie Cook) WICKET (ct Aaron Nash) WICKET (ct Eddie Cook) Single Broxbourne were reeling and Reed were on a high. Callum took the dangerous wicket of Dylan Stark in his second over - yet another close-quarters catch from Eddie Cook. Broxbourne were on 12 for 4 off 4 overs. Daniel finished his spell on a respectable 3-0-0-16, and Callum on the ludicrous 2-1-4-1, reserving an over for the death. The sheer depth of Broxbourne's batting line up quickly came to the fore, and the next three bowlers faced swift retribution... Lily Hall (1-0-0-8), Gethin Hill (3-0-0-27), Eddie Cook (3-0-0-24). Broxbourne were flying.... finishing the 13th over on 94 for 4. Tom Green entered the maelstrom and steadied the ship a little... but by this point, Broxbourne weren't taking any prisoners and the boundaries just kept coming. Tom eventually made a breakthrough in his third over, ending on 3-0-1-17, but by then the damage [...]

U13s winning ways continue

Reed U13s win again.... In a low-scoring game, the efficient bowling of the U13s paid dividends. After losing the toss and being put in to bat, Reed got off to a flyer, scoring 17 off the first two overs, before a flurry of wickets left Reed reeling. With Daniel Vincent (1), Charlie Hawker (1) and Tash McNamara (0) back in the shed and Reed on 27 for 3 in the 5th over. Charlie Cannon came on for a quick-fire 8 before being bowled, quickly followed by Aaron Nash (1). Reed were on 52 for 5 in the 7th over and things were looking ominous. Callum was running out of partners, and running out of time before enforced retirement on 30.... With Eddie Cook coming in to bat, the familiar partnership settled things down... Scoring steadily for 4 overs before Eddie top-edged one to the keeper for 5. With the retirement total in his sights, Callum attempted to launch one but was caught on 29. Things were looking familiar with Stanley Johnson joining Matthew Barons in the middle... The partnership that just failed to get Reed over the line against Hertford earlier in the season. This time around, Matthew forcing the singles (lesson learned), scoring a season-best 10 runs before being caught out. Stanley (1) saw the innings home with Lily Hall (0). Reed scored 94 runs, and needed to bowl well. And Reed's bowling was first class.... Daniel Vincent opened the innings with a maiden, followed by just 3 runs off Callum Ricketts first over. Hertford got two boundaries off Daniel's second over, but when he finished his spell, Daniel had a second maiden... 3-2-0-12. Keeping an over in hand for the end, Callum added [...]

U13s do it again!

You wait two seasons for a victory, then they keep coming like London buses. The developing players in the U13s squad demonstrate what is possible with a little hard work (and a lot of fielding practice). This friendly match-up was designed to give the developing players on both sides match experience - and both sides gave good account. Highlight of the evening was Scarlett Blaney's hat-trick on debut.... and I'm not sure that Scarlett has stopped smiling yet. To the delight of everyone, both Thriplow and Reed fielded mix-sex teams, showing just how popular the ladies game is becoming. Thriplow won the toss and opted to Bat. With bowling being shared equally among every player (except Wicket Keeper, Daniel Vincent), everyone had a job to do. The bowling was kept fairly tight ... and the fielding even tighter. With only 8 boundaries conceded and Thriplow restricted to running singles, the opposition were restricted to 104 runs for 6 wickets. Pick of the bowlers was debutant Scarlett Blaney (2-0-3-7), ably supported by (among others) Gethin Hill (2-0-1-8), Matthew Barons (2-0-0-6), Effie Bone (2-0-0-10) and Charlie Ward (2-0-0-10) The inexperienced batting line-up, was supported by Daniel Vincent at #1 and the dependable duo of Callum Ricketts at #10 and Oscar Lamb at #11 to bring them home. After strict instruction to score singles and keep off strike - Daniel declared his first 2 boundaries were "accidents", but quickly settled down with his young cousin, Tash McNamara, to build an opening partnership of 55 in 8 overs. Daniel retired on 24, and Tash after achieving 20. The plan was to allow everyone maximum opportunities to bat... and all time at the crease - however brief - is valuable [...]

Victory – At Last!

After 2 barren years, the U13s recorded their first league victory against top-of-the-table Broxbourne 2s in a closely fought match that went down to the wire. Broxbourne won the toss and elected to put Reed into bat - A decision which appeared to be paying off as Reed struggled to accumulate runs against tight bowling. Opener Eddie Cooke was bowled cheaply (1), bringing newcomer Lewis Abdul-Karim to the crease in the 5th over with Reed on 12 runs. Lewis's years perfecting his golf swing proved useful in the middle as he found the boundary twice before being run out to a direct hit from deep on 9 runs. Reed were 47 for 2 in the 10th over. Tom Green came to the crease knowing that the run rate needed to improve if Reed were going to post a defendable total - which he duly did until opener Callum Rickets was bowled on 13. The dynamic partnership of Tom Green and Daniel Vincent rarely disappoints and the run rate accelerated again with quick-witted running between the wickets and continuous strike rotation Reed raced past 100 runs before Tom shipped a catch to a fielder.... departing agonisingly close to retirement on 29; closely followed by Daniel (18) - who found a fielder whilst trying to clear the boundary in the 19th over. Aaron Nash added a quick-fire 5 in 4 balls - partnered by Lily Hall (bowled - 0) and Tash McNamara (0) who closed out the innings. Reed posted a respectable 124 Reeds bowling needed to be composed and tight - Which is was... The opening partnership of Callum Ricketts (2-0-0-4) and Daniel Vincent (3-0-0-12) kept Broxbourne honest... but they decided to go after Lewis Abdul-Karim, [...]

Reed U13s improving every game

Broxbourne 1 may be running top of the league, but Reed's continual improvement in form is beginning to show through. After losing the toss and being put in the field, a change in the opening bowling meant that Aaron Nash (3 overs, 0 maidens, 0 wickets, 19 runs) and Tom Green (3-0-1-19) were pitched against Broxbourne’s openers - bristling with district and county players. Tom and Aaron keeping Broxbourne honest. As is becoming customary.... Reed continued to take wickets at the expense of runs, with newcomer Charlie Cannon (3-0-1-14) and veteran Lily Hall (3-0-1-30) feeling the heat from the dangerous middle order. The depth of Broxbourne's batting line-up started to show, with Stanley Johnson (1-0-0-11) and Sam Dawson (1-0-0-12) being punished by the experienced batting. Reed's most experienced bowlers shored up the bowling, Daniel Vincent (3-0-1-8) and Callum Ricketts (3-0-3-26), but even they could stem the flow. Reed had taken 7 Broxbourne wickets. With Broxbourne on 149, a victory was always going to be a long shot .... But Reed had their eye on achieving maximum batting bonus points. With Broxbourne's bowling line-up as adept as their batters, the aim was to bat long and deep - So the early loss of the normally steady Oscar Lamb for 0 was a big blow. Tom Green (8) was caught attempting to clear the fielder. Daniel Vincent to the crease earlier than expected with Reed on 26 for 2 off 7 overs. Callum and Daniel looked to be steadying the ship once again, before Callum fell on 9 runs to a peach of a ball. Charlie Cannon arrived... along with the fireworks, hitting a 6 off his first ball, followed by a 4 of the next! The [...]

Reed U13s edge ever closer….

In their second match this week, Reed yet again showed solid bowling, restricting a developing Broxbourne side to just 112 runs - with some tight bowling at the death from Callum Ricketts (3 over 0 maidens 3 wickets for 11 runs) and Aaron Nash (2-0-2-8), with some strong fielding from Sam Dawson in his first match. Reed got off to a shaky start with two of the first three batsmen going for ducks, closely followed by the remaining opener. With Reed on 15 for 5, then 47 for 7, a swift end was in sight. However, a middle order mini-revival by Josh Heslam (18 Not Out) and Oscar Lamb (9) rotating the strike and accumulating byes and wides, it looked like Reed might just salvage a victory from the jaws of defeat. It was not to be, though, as Oscar lost his wicket, closely followed by Gethin - Leaving the Heslam brothers to face that final 4 overs for the last wicket. With the finishing line in site - The final wicket fell in the 17th over. Reed edge ever closer to what must be their first victory of the season - with a little help from the Heslam Brothers. Strong Bowling Performance by Reed U13s

Reed are starting to give strong performances with the ball, with an ever-increasing ability to take wickets.... A great stride forward from last season. 2 wickets apiece from Callum Ricketts (4 overs, 0 maidens, 2 wickets for 33 runs), Daniel Vincent (4-0-2-24) and Tom Green (4-0-2-15). Eddie Cook (4-0-1-20) is showing improved consistency this season and newcomer Lily Hall (2-0-1-3) showed great skill in her first ever match. It was mainly through a particularly strong batting performance from Bishop's Stortford captain, J Frans (31 Retired) that BSCC posted a defendable total of 115 for 9. With spirits high, Reed started strongly against the opening bowlers, scoring well off the first 4 overs, before Bishop's Stortford tightened the field, runs dried up and the pressure mounted on the openers. And much like London buses, once one wicket came... they kept on coming, with no-one adding significant runs after Callum Rickets (17) and Eddie Cook (15) were dismissed attempting to recover the run rate. Reed eventually all out for 58 and out of the cup. Next up - Broxbourne in the Herts Junior League. Match report submitted by Lee Vincent.

U13 Pre-Season Friendly shows promising signs

Reed U13s played a pre-league season friendly on a cold April evening at Letchworth last Thursday. Letchworth won the toss and decided to bat. Letchworth's strong batting line-up became immediately apparent, with the 1st 5 batsmen all reaching the required 20 runs, with the opener being particularly strong, retiring in just the second over. The run rate steadied down after this initial flurry... and the breakthrough eventually came when Daniel Vincent took the first wicket in the very last over. An additional wicket would have been claimed earlier.... had the fielders recognised the batsman had hit his own wicket and appealed! Lesson hopefully learned. With Reed chasing 152, the runs were always just a little behind the required rate, and with a very young squad was always going to be a tall order. After Jacob Vincent (a pre-arranged ringer from the U14s) and Eddie Cooke retiring early in the innings, runs proved difficult to accumulate against steady, accurate, bowling. A late flurry from Daniel Vincent (13 from 5 balls) was too little too late on what was, by then, a very chilly evening. Reed closed on 108 for 6. What was obvious from the very first ball was that this Reed team has shown great improvement over last season, with a far more controlled demeanour with both the bat and ball. A game played in the very best of spirits to kick-start a promising season. Match report submitted by LV.
