Reed U11s make it a perfect 8 out of 8 at the halfway stage!

The impressive Reed Under 11s squad continued their excellent start to the season making it a perfect 8 wins out of 8 matches with two further wins for both their A and B teams in the last few weeks. The first of the victories for the A team came against Letchworth at a well-attended sunny Reed Green where although scoring quickly Reed youngsters were in a spot of bother at 33 for 4, however 9 year-old Eddie Heslam accompanied by Jon Green batted with great maturity and stabilised the innings with them both retiring on 25 and 26 respectively as Reed continued through their full 20 overs totalling 135 for 8, a total they felt confident of defending. This proved to be the case as early wickets for the intimidating opening pair of Charlie Ingrey and Josh Heslam saw Reed on their way, and with the usual tight Reed fielding piled on the pressure producing two excellent direct hit run outs from Green and J Heslam so Letchworth were soon struggling in their reply. Further wickets for Ollie Kimsey, Zac Rouse (2-6) and Eddie Heslam saw Letchworth subside to 52 all out in 11.4 overs. A comprehensive win for Reed and a good all-round cricketing performance by all the boys, well martialled by Captain Josh Heslam. The 2nd win for the Reed A team came in much more comfortable circumstances away to Hatfield Hyde. This time the Reed batting order fired in full force with Josh Heslam and Ethan Fox running superbly together in another fine opening partnership before Fox was unlucky to be run out for a well made 16. Heslam went onto 28 retired as did the in-form Green (25), and with Luke [...]

It’s a Super 6 for Reed Under 11s!

For the 2021 Season Reed Under 11s entered the Herts Junior Cricket League “Hard Ball - 11-a-Side” format competition and have been placed in League 4 with opponents from Welwyn Garden City, Letchworth, Stevenage, Hitchin and Datchworth. To date, with 6 of the 10 league matches played, Reed have a 100% Winning Record, and sit top of the League, clear by 33 points. Due to the extremely wet May weather, Reeds first league match did not take place until 1st June when on a fine summers evening at Reed they dismissed Stevenage for just 36 before comfortably knocking off the required runs scoring their 37 - 2 in just 9 overs. Reed Captain Josh Heslam produced the first of several devastating opening spells of bowling this season with 3 wickets, supported by Harrison S, Jon Green and younger brother Eddie Heslam picking up the remainder of the Stevenage wickets. Josh Heslam and Ethan Fox then began what has become a prolific opening partnership taking the team to the verge of victory before two late wickets and the winning runs assured by Heslam and Reed Number 4 Henry Cook. The following week saw 3 wins in 4 evenings! On Monday night Reed recorded a comfortable win against Hitchin (Reed 131-5 off 20 Overs - Hitchin 98 All Out off 18.5 Overs). After a fast scoring but eventful first few overs, Reed were thankful to a fine 5th wicket partnership by Joseph Rhodes and Rory Longland who both reached retirement scores of 25 and 28. With the ball Josh Heslam and Toby Cook tore through the Hitchin top order with 3 wickets a piece to set Reed on the path to victory. The boys then followed up [...]

U13 Pre-Season Friendly shows promising signs

Reed U13s played a pre-league season friendly on a cold April evening at Letchworth last Thursday. Letchworth won the toss and decided to bat. Letchworth's strong batting line-up became immediately apparent, with the 1st 5 batsmen all reaching the required 20 runs, with the opener being particularly strong, retiring in just the second over. The run rate steadied down after this initial flurry... and the breakthrough eventually came when Daniel Vincent took the first wicket in the very last over. An additional wicket would have been claimed earlier.... had the fielders recognised the batsman had hit his own wicket and appealed! Lesson hopefully learned. With Reed chasing 152, the runs were always just a little behind the required rate, and with a very young squad was always going to be a tall order. After Jacob Vincent (a pre-arranged ringer from the U14s) and Eddie Cooke retiring early in the innings, runs proved difficult to accumulate against steady, accurate, bowling. A late flurry from Daniel Vincent (13 from 5 balls) was too little too late on what was, by then, a very chilly evening. Reed closed on 108 for 6. What was obvious from the very first ball was that this Reed team has shown great improvement over last season, with a far more controlled demeanour with both the bat and ball. A game played in the very best of spirits to kick-start a promising season. Match report submitted by LV.
