U15s Difficulties Continue

With the U15s squad hampered by long-term injuries, the journey to Hertford was very much an unknown entity. A re-scheduled match from earlier in the season, U15s could only muster 10 players for the half-term fixture - with two of these new additions to the team. Reed won the toss and elected to bat. Daniel Vincent and Oscar Lamb opened the batting against rapid pace. With Daniel seeing off the majority of the seam deliveries, Oscar fell to a quality catch for a duck, followed quickly by Daniel after being deceived by a spinning delivery. Reed were 5 for 2 in the 4th over. Unfortunately, Reed never really got started, and it was the wayward deliveries from Hertford which brought respectability to the score-line. Stanley Johnson (8) Charlie Cannon (8), Aaron Nash (6), Oliver Tallis (10), Luke Parker (7), Lily Hall (5) hauled the score to 96 for 8 at the end of 20 overs. Sub-100 scores are always going to be difficult to defend, so Reed were dependant on getting early wickets. Crack-bowler Lily Hall opened the bowling and was extremely close to taking a wicket with the first ball.... But after a number of near-misses, Lily finished on 3-0-23-0. Luke Parker, Charlie Cannon and Stanley Johnson were equally unlucky - and with a missing fielder, runs (and boundaries) were in plentiful supply for the Hertford openers. With both opening batsmen approaching forced-retirement on 40, it was new-player Vicky Stevenson who forced a mistake, taking a wicket with her first over of bowling. Reed U15s need to rebuild after injuries

After a bruising encounter at Ickleford in the T20 cup, Reed were without 3 experienced players for their league match against Welwyn Garden City. With Callum (Broken Toe), Jamie (Knee) and Daniel (Back) unavailable to bowl, the next few weeks are going to be tough for the U15s players. Fortunately, Daniel is still able to take the field to bat, and his experience in the field will help the younger players coming through. Welwyn won the toss and elected to field. A completely new opening pairing of Daniel and Eddie saw off the opening bowlers and reached 29 for 0 from 6 overs (with WGC opening bowler Vinnakota going for just 3 runs from his 2 overs) before Eddie was caught on 5 from 22 balls. In an error from the umpires, the batters crossing was not reversed, and Daniel was bowled by a ball that died in the wicket next ball (13 from 18). Then a quickfire 5 from 3 from Charlie Cannon before being caught in the next over. Reed were in trouble. When Stanley Johnson was caught in the next (9th) over it was up to Lewis Karim and Sam Dawson to make a stand if Reed were to post a defendable score. A partnership of 31 runs came to an end when Karim (30 from 24) was caught. Sam continued to show composure in the middle, while a succession of partners were dismissed at the other end. U15s first match ends in inury

After a much-delayed start top the season for the U15s, Reed travelled to Ickleford for a cup match. Ickleford won the toss and elected to Bat. The Reed opening bowlers of Jamie Coote and Callum Ricketts started superbly, limiting Ickleford to just 7 runs from the first 4 overs. An intelligent throw from Daniel Vincent at long-on to the keeper led to a run-out on the last ball of the 4th over. The next bowling pairing of Daniel Vincent and Lily Hall kept up the pressure, with both taking wickets in their first overs; and Daniel adding another in his second over. A recurrence of a back injury meant Daniel had to stop bowling with 2 wickets for 3 runs (2-1-2-3). After 7 overs, Ickleford has struggled to 16 runs, having lost 4 wickets and Reed were strongly on top. Ickleford needed to up the pressure and went on the attack - Lily took the brunt in her 2nd over, finishing on 2-0-1-19 Lewis Karim put the pressure back on with a tidy opening over going for just 2 runs. Eddie Cooke kept the pressure on with his 1st over, taking a wicket (caught Lewis) After 10 overs, Ickleford were 38 for 5. In an innings that can only be described as having two halves, Ickleford (and in particular their No.5 batsman Pereth) went on the attack against Reed's supporting bowlers. With Pereth retiring on 40 runs, the 6th wicket stand reached 58 runs. Jamie Coote striking twice in the 16th over (his 3rd) ending on 3-0-2-8. U15s close out win against Welwyn

The opening partnership of Jacob Vincent and Oli Cambridge were hoping to get the team to a solid start, which was quickly thwarted when Jake played across the line to a straight ball and was bowled for 0. He was swiftly followed by Jake Garner, who was the wrong side of a dubious LBW decision. Reed found themselves on 12 for 2 from 3 overs. George Wood and Cambridge steadied the ship for a few overs, rotating the strike and punishing poor balls before George was caught for 10. Reed were on 37/3. Charlie Cannon went out and he and Cambridge decided to punish any wayward bowling, the pair putting on 31 runs until Cannon got caught for 8 runs in the 12th over, replaced by Dom Longland. Cambridge was run out in the next over, failing to slide his bat attempting a quick run... A quality 33 runs from 34 balls had brought Reed back into the match. Oli Tapsell came in, but fell in the following over on 8. Reed were 83 for 6 in the 14th. Charlie Browne went to the crease for the first time this season and didn't disappoint. Dom and Browne put on a partnership of 30 runs before Dom fell to a spectacular catch at mid-on. (23 from 15). U15s struggle against Broxbourne

Broxbourne won the toss and elected to bowl. Openers Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge attacked the Broxbourne bowlers from the first ball, scoring a quick-fire 22 from the first 3 overs, with any loose balls heading to the boundary. A wicked delivery in the 4th over saw Ollie Cambridge caught for 6 from 12. George Wood came to the crease. A change of bowlers slowed the run-rate, and the scoreboard pressure told, with Jacob being stumped after chasing the spinner, ending on 19 from 32. Newly-invigorated Eddie Cook joined George and his attacking style started to bring Reed back into the game, scoring freely until missing one – bowled on 17 from 21 – An excellent contribution. Oli Tapsell made a cameo appearance 1st ball 4, 2nd ball out. Daniel Vincent played a similar cameo 1 from 2 Reed were back in trouble on 83 for 5 in the 15th over. The saving grace was that we had surpassed our previous total against Broxbourne! And with plenty of batters left in the hutch, George and Callum Ricketts were free to swing. And they duly obliged ....... There were only 8 dot balls from the remaining 27 and Reed ended on a creditable 114 for 5. George Wood 22 from 26, and Callum Ricketts 13 from 14. With the openers doing their job of seeing off the opening bowling spell, the rest of the team are starting to open up and accelerate the run rate. Whilst vastly improved from the 83 scored in the 1st match of the season, defending 114 was always going to be difficult, and Reed needed to take wickets. U15s run chase comes up short

Reed hosted St. Margaretsbury on the back of three wins on the bounce. St. Margaretsbury won the toss and opted to bat first. Aggressive batting against the opening pairing of Charlie Walters and Ollie Cambridge meant that SM were off to a flier, scoring 41 runs off the first 5 overs. Ollie C (who had been unusually expensive to this point) then struck... Removing both openers in the space of 3 balls. Finishing with figures of 3 overs, 0 maidens, 2 wickets for 28 runs. Charlie finishing his spell with 3-0-0-17. George Woods and Callum Ricketts made up the second Seam / Spin pairing, but St. Margaretsbury's onslaught didn't let up.... After 12 overs, SM were on 102 for 2 (GW 3-0-0-27, CR 3-0-0-20). Olli Tapsell and Jacob Vincent tried to stem the flow, with Jacob getting wickets with his 6th and 7th balls. OT finished his overs on 2-0-0-19. Jacob saved himself for the last over... Daniel Vincent bowled steady (2-0-0-15), and Charlie Cannon bowled the 18th over for 17 runs. Jacob finished the innings with another wicket (3-0-3-15) St. Margaretsbury has amassed 169 runs. Some uncharacteristic dropped catches and fielding errors had cost Reed a few runs. 169 was going to be a tough chase. The Opening Pairing of Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge went after the opening bowling pairing and were looking good right up the last ball of the 6th over, when Ollie saw his stumps skittled, falling for 9. U15s in game of two halves

Bishop's Stortford won the toss and chose to field. In a shake up of the batting order, Jacob and Daniel Vincent opened. A decision that was regretted when both openers were dismissed playing questionable strokes early on - both caught at mid-wicket. Daniel for 4, Jacob for 10. When Eddie Cooke fell second ball for nought, Reed looked in trouble. Then when Kerian, who looked in good form, was dismissed 4 balls later Reed were 32 for 4 off 6 overs. Callum Ricketts and Aaron Nash were at the crease. Plenty of overs left, and Reed needed to settle... Callum was performing an admirable role in blocking, but fell in the 7th over for nought. Reed were reeling on 36 for 5. Oli Cambridge strode out with purpose with 12 overs left. Aaron fell in the 10th over. Charlie Cannon joined Ollie and scored a boundary off his first ball. Ollie was determined to keep the strike, and Charlie was determined to run hard to keep him there. Unfortunately, Charlie was caught on his second ball. Reed were 49 for 7 from 11 overs. Liam Neal came to the crease with few runs to his name this season, so it was a pleasant surprise when the run rate accelerated. It was more of a surprise that Reed survived until the 18th over before Liam was caught on 9 having score 2 boundaries. George Wood went in to help Ollie make the score respectable... putting on 14 runs between them in 16 balls, Ollie reaching 35, George 2. Reed finished on 99. The tough games keep coming for Reed U15s

When Bishop's Stortford rolled into town with multiple county players, it was always going to be tricky for the Reed U15s, especially when a depleted side were relying on support from 2 enthusiastic U13s players. Bishops Stortford won the toss and opted to bat first. In a marked improvement from the first match, the opening bowlers kept the bowling tight, and extras to a minimum. In a deliberate tactic, Reed interspersed their seam and spin bowlers - A tactic which initially worked well with Oli Cambridge dismissing batter #2 with his second ball - clean bowled. Reed continued to take regular wickets, but the strong Stortford batting line-up regularly found the boundary. Pick of the bowlers were George Wood (3-1-2-17) and Oli Cambridge (3-0-2-25), With Daniel Vincent taking one wicket, and stumping the non-striker off his own bowling with some sharp hands. Stortford finished on 150 for 6. Facing some rapid bowling, the opening pairing of Jacob Vincent and George Wood tried to weather the storm in the hope of some relief with the change bowlers. Unfortunately, George was caught on 0 and Jacob followed shortly after after some superb 'keeping had him stumped on 6. Reed never really recovered, and the bowling remained relentless for the first 10 overs. It was only after the spinners came on that Reed had the opportunity to score runs, but by then then Reed had lost 7 wickets for a score of 33. With the match lost and Callum Ricketts and Liam Neal determined to see out the overs, the innings drifted towards its conclusion. Tough start for Reed Under 15s

Reed started the season with one of the toughest opponents of the season, Broxbourne, away. Broxbourne won the toss and elected to bat. Reeds opening bowlers showed some winter rust and started haemorrhaging extras.... After 6 overs, Broxbourne were at 58 for 1, having scored just 10 off the bat. The only highlight being Liam Neal's catch off George Wood's bowling. After their opening batter was dismissed (caught Oli Tapsell, bowled O Cambridge), Broxbourne accumulated runs in the middle overs with their strongest batters at the crease. Jake Vincent bowled an impressive spell, taking 2 for 10 off 2 overs and slowing the run rate. Broxbourne finished with a flourish, with plenty of batters left in the pavilion, they could let loose, with Callum Ricketts (3-0-1-16) and Charlie Cannon (2-0-0-21) feeling the brunt of the batting. Broxbourne finished on 161 for 5, with the wayward bowling accounting for 46 of the runs. With such a tough total to chase, Reed were always feeling the pressure.... With the light fading, batting was always going to be tricky. With opening batter, Jacob Vincent reaching 36 before being dismissed, the remaining batters never looked comfortable batting in the evening gloom. A final flourish from Eddie Cook (10 from 7) earned Reed an extra bonus point, finishing 82 for 9 from the 20 overs. Going forward, Reed need to be a little more aggressive with the bat, and a little more positive with the running... Next Up, another tough opponent in Bishops Stortford 1s. Game, Set & Match versus Godmanchester!

This week may have seen the start of the Wimbledon tennis tournament but it also saw an epic Under 15 cricket match on the Reed Green. Our first league win resembled a top seed being slayed on centre court! Godmanchester were unbeaten in the U15 Premier Division of the Cambs Youth Cricket League since their switch from the Hunts league and we were yet to record our first victory. The game went down to the wire and our first win delighted our boys, many of whom have worked very hard to improve. Manager Rich Barlow was forced to shuffle the pack again but we are fortunate to now have lots of U14 and 15 players signed-on having had to concede the reverse fixture due to a lack of availability! We won the toss and elected to field on another nice evening. Charlie Walters (2-14) showed his increased pace and controlled the ball well to prize the wickets of "Goddy's" openers. Dom Longland and Matt Ladds (2-13) also bowled from the pavilion end and utilised the slope well; Ladds was particularly impressive taking a wicket with his first ball on his league debut! Just like the previous night the score we had to chase didn’t appear huge, 120 for 5, Walters (53) and Sanderson (32) were conservative in their reply against some menacing bowlers. As per the previous night again Vincent was thrown in at the deep end however he and Archie M stayed calm under pressure to record an eight-wicket victory. Many parents who have seen the previous games will have seen the boys getting closer to victory but I’m sure many didn’t perceive this against a big gun like Godmanchester.
