U15s Difficulties Continue

With the U15s squad hampered by long-term injuries, the journey to Hertford was very much an unknown entity. A re-scheduled match from earlier in the season, U15s could only muster 10 players for the half-term fixture - with two of these new additions to the team. Reed won the toss and elected to bat. Daniel Vincent and Oscar Lamb opened the batting against rapid pace. With Daniel seeing off the majority of the seam deliveries, Oscar fell to a quality catch for a duck, followed quickly by Daniel after being deceived by a spinning delivery. Reed were 5 for 2 in the 4th over. Unfortunately, Reed never really got started, and it was the wayward deliveries from Hertford which brought respectability to the score-line. Stanley Johnson (8) Charlie Cannon (8), Aaron Nash (6), Oliver Tallis (10), Luke Parker (7), Lily Hall (5) hauled the score to 96 for 8 at the end of 20 overs. Sub-100 scores are always going to be difficult to defend, so Reed were dependant on getting early wickets. Crack-bowler Lily Hall opened the bowling and was extremely close to taking a wicket with the first ball.... But after a number of near-misses, Lily finished on 3-0-23-0. Luke Parker, Charlie Cannon and Stanley Johnson were equally unlucky - and with a missing fielder, runs (and boundaries) were in plentiful supply for the Hertford openers. With both opening batsmen approaching forced-retirement on 40, it was new-player Vicky Stevenson who forced a mistake, taking a wicket with her first over of bowling. Reed U15s need to rebuild after injuries

After a bruising encounter at Ickleford in the T20 cup, Reed were without 3 experienced players for their league match against Welwyn Garden City. With Callum (Broken Toe), Jamie (Knee) and Daniel (Back) unavailable to bowl, the next few weeks are going to be tough for the U15s players. Fortunately, Daniel is still able to take the field to bat, and his experience in the field will help the younger players coming through. Welwyn won the toss and elected to field. A completely new opening pairing of Daniel and Eddie saw off the opening bowlers and reached 29 for 0 from 6 overs (with WGC opening bowler Vinnakota going for just 3 runs from his 2 overs) before Eddie was caught on 5 from 22 balls. In an error from the umpires, the batters crossing was not reversed, and Daniel was bowled by a ball that died in the wicket next ball (13 from 18). Then a quickfire 5 from 3 from Charlie Cannon before being caught in the next over. Reed were in trouble. When Stanley Johnson was caught in the next (9th) over it was up to Lewis Karim and Sam Dawson to make a stand if Reed were to post a defendable score. A partnership of 31 runs came to an end when Karim (30 from 24) was caught. Sam continued to show composure in the middle, while a succession of partners were dismissed at the other end. U15s first match ends in inury

After a much-delayed start top the season for the U15s, Reed travelled to Ickleford for a cup match. Ickleford won the toss and elected to Bat. The Reed opening bowlers of Jamie Coote and Callum Ricketts started superbly, limiting Ickleford to just 7 runs from the first 4 overs. An intelligent throw from Daniel Vincent at long-on to the keeper led to a run-out on the last ball of the 4th over. The next bowling pairing of Daniel Vincent and Lily Hall kept up the pressure, with both taking wickets in their first overs; and Daniel adding another in his second over. A recurrence of a back injury meant Daniel had to stop bowling with 2 wickets for 3 runs (2-1-2-3). After 7 overs, Ickleford has struggled to 16 runs, having lost 4 wickets and Reed were strongly on top. Ickleford needed to up the pressure and went on the attack - Lily took the brunt in her 2nd over, finishing on 2-0-1-19 Lewis Karim put the pressure back on with a tidy opening over going for just 2 runs. Eddie Cooke kept the pressure on with his 1st over, taking a wicket (caught Lewis) After 10 overs, Ickleford were 38 for 5. In an innings that can only be described as having two halves, Ickleford (and in particular their No.5 batsman Pereth) went on the attack against Reed's supporting bowlers. Reed U11s win League unbeaten but suffer Quarter-Final heartbreak

Reed Under 11s completed a fantastic unbeaten league season but suffered an agonisingly close defeat in the Hertfordshire Junior League (HJL) Quarter-Final last Monday evening at Reed to Wheathampstead the eventual Hertfordshire Championship winners at Finals Day on the following Sunday. The Reed boys were the stand-out team across all of the HJL groups winning every match and by some staggering margins. Like in the first round of 4 matches already reported on this season, the team were dominant and even more so playing some outstanding cricket in the second half of their campaign. The first of the second set of their league matches was likely to be the league decider against a strong Hitchin team (who themselves lost out in a close Quarter-Final encounter this week) and Reed put in probably their performance of the season with some fine bowling and fielding. The Heslam brothers did the damage with the ball with Josh picking up two early wickets and then 9 year-old younger brother Eddie Heslam producing figures of 5 for 17 ripping through the dangerous Hitchin middle order. This was well supported by Henry Cook (2 for 5) and superb fielding, Rory Longland with two excellent catches, E Heslam direct hit run out and a fine stumping by wicket keeper Ethan Fox. Reed put the icing on the cake with J Heslam and Fox knocking off the runs with no wickets down only Heslam retiring at 25 and it was left to Cook to secure the winning runs. Under 13s Await Title Crown!

Our Under 13 Team is expected to be crowned one of the Cambridgeshire League Champions having only lost one game all season! The team has developed substantially this year and very nearly stayed unbeaten eventually losing their final game by two runs! We now have a handful of friendly matches left and a fun Hundred-style game with our Under 11s on the President's Day Sunday 24th July. Some of our Under 13s have already started to make the step up to the Under 15 team and the confidence the Under 13 league wins have given our children is great to see. Notable batting performances this season have been Josh Heslam scoring over 100 runs and averaging 39 which is staggering considering he is an Under 11 and has to retire on 30 so there have been several Not Outs there. Aaron Nash and Sam Dawson have also chipped in with some important runs, Aaron often anchoring the innings as captain. Lewis Karim clicked recently at Thriplow with 22 not out and continues to show great potential, meanwhile Lily Hall has been gradually creeping up the batting order with some valuable runs late on in games. A special mention to Oliver Walters too who has looked technically very correct in games as well. Lily has however emphatically taken the bowling crown though with an amazing 18 wickets at 5.67. Josh Heslam backed up his impressive batting performances with 8 wickets at 6.25. Sam Dawson was slightly unlucky not to get more wickets as our strike bowler got quicker and more accurate as the season progressed. U15s close out win against Welwyn

The opening partnership of Jacob Vincent and Oli Cambridge were hoping to get the team to a solid start, which was quickly thwarted when Jake played across the line to a straight ball and was bowled for 0. He was swiftly followed by Jake Garner, who was the wrong side of a dubious LBW decision. Reed found themselves on 12 for 2 from 3 overs. George Wood and Cambridge steadied the ship for a few overs, rotating the strike and punishing poor balls before George was caught for 10. Reed were on 37/3. Charlie Cannon went out and he and Cambridge decided to punish any wayward bowling, the pair putting on 31 runs until Cannon got caught for 8 runs in the 12th over, replaced by Dom Longland. Cambridge was run out in the next over, failing to slide his bat attempting a quick run... A quality 33 runs from 34 balls had brought Reed back into the match. Oli Tapsell came in, but fell in the following over on 8. Reed were 83 for 6 in the 14th. Charlie Browne went to the crease for the first time this season and didn't disappoint. Dom and Browne put on a partnership of 30 runs before Dom fell to a spectacular catch at mid-on. (23 from 15). Daniel Vincent fell in a carbon copy of his brother - playing across the line to a straight ball (bowled for 0). Reed were on 116 for 8 in the 17th over. U15s struggle against Broxbourne

Broxbourne won the toss and elected to bowl. Openers Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge attacked the Broxbourne bowlers from the first ball, scoring a quick-fire 22 from the first 3 overs, with any loose balls heading to the boundary. A wicked delivery in the 4th over saw Ollie Cambridge caught for 6 from 12. George Wood came to the crease. A change of bowlers slowed the run-rate, and the scoreboard pressure told, with Jacob being stumped after chasing the spinner, ending on 19 from 32. Newly-invigorated Eddie Cook joined George and his attacking style started to bring Reed back into the game, scoring freely until missing one – bowled on 17 from 21 – An excellent contribution. Oli Tapsell made a cameo appearance 1st ball 4, 2nd ball out. Daniel Vincent played a similar cameo 1 from 2 Reed were back in trouble on 83 for 5 in the 15th over. The saving grace was that we had surpassed our previous total against Broxbourne! And with plenty of batters left in the hutch, George and Callum Ricketts were free to swing. And they duly obliged ....... There were only 8 dot balls from the remaining 27 and Reed ended on a creditable 114 for 5. George Wood 22 from 26, and Callum Ricketts 13 from 14. With the openers doing their job of seeing off the opening bowling spell, the rest of the team are starting to open up and accelerate the run rate. Whilst vastly improved from the 83 scored in the 1st match of the season, defending 114 was always going to be difficult, and Reed needed to take wickets. U13s 3 in 3!

Our Under 13 team has made a pleasing start to their Cambridgeshire League with three out of three league wins. The league looks like it will be incredibly competitive as all three of our wins have been by small margins and one game elsewhere was tied! First up was a trip to City of Cambridge with a handful for U11s helping us out we won the toss and elected to field. The game was played just off Long Road near to the home of Cantabs rugby club and it appears over the years they have seen sense and switched the wicket round to avoid the problem of trains passing behind the bowlers arm from one end. Playing in the Cambs league is a new experience for many of these players and we started brightly with wickets for Lily Hall, Charlie Ingrey, Joseph Rhodes, Finley Brown and Aaron Nash as well as a smart run out by Daf Hill. They ended on 106 for 7 and we were not sure what resembled a good score but we set about chasing it down with some steady partnerships, most notably 31 before the fall of the first wicket. Opening batters Josh Heslam and Aaron Nash, (recognise those surnames!?) looked very steady before Nash (8) was bowled trying to increase the tempo. Oliver Walters (4) and Heslam (retired for 24) added another 30 before Matthew Barons (11) and Rhodes (10) helped us make a winning start with some late power hitting from Hill (6) and Ingrey (5) we reached our target in the final over. Reed U11s make it a perfect 8 out of 8 at the halfway stage!

The impressive Reed Under 11s squad continued their excellent start to the season making it a perfect 8 wins out of 8 matches with two further wins for both their A and B teams in the last few weeks. The first of the victories for the A team came against Letchworth at a well-attended sunny Reed Green where although scoring quickly Reed youngsters were in a spot of bother at 33 for 4, however 9 year-old Eddie Heslam accompanied by Jon Green batted with great maturity and stabilised the innings with them both retiring on 25 and 26 respectively as Reed continued through their full 20 overs totalling 135 for 8, a total they felt confident of defending. This proved to be the case as early wickets for the intimidating opening pair of Charlie Ingrey and Josh Heslam saw Reed on their way, and with the usual tight Reed fielding piled on the pressure producing two excellent direct hit run outs from Green and J Heslam so Letchworth were soon struggling in their reply. Further wickets for Ollie Kimsey, Zac Rouse (2-6) and Eddie Heslam saw Letchworth subside to 52 all out in 11.4 overs. A comprehensive win for Reed and a good all-round cricketing performance by all the boys, well martialled by Captain Josh Heslam. The 2nd win for the Reed A team came in much more comfortable circumstances away to Hatfield Hyde. U15s run chase comes up short

Reed hosted St. Margaretsbury on the back of three wins on the bounce. St. Margaretsbury won the toss and opted to bat first. Aggressive batting against the opening pairing of Charlie Walters and Ollie Cambridge meant that SM were off to a flier, scoring 41 runs off the first 5 overs. Ollie C (who had been unusually expensive to this point) then struck... Removing both openers in the space of 3 balls. Finishing with figures of 3 overs, 0 maidens, 2 wickets for 28 runs. Charlie finishing his spell with 3-0-0-17. George Woods and Callum Ricketts made up the second Seam / Spin pairing, but St. Margaretsbury's onslaught didn't let up.... After 12 overs, SM were on 102 for 2 (GW 3-0-0-27, CR 3-0-0-20). Olli Tapsell and Jacob Vincent tried to stem the flow, with Jacob getting wickets with his 6th and 7th balls. OT finished his overs on 2-0-0-19. Jacob saved himself for the last over... Daniel Vincent bowled steady (2-0-0-15), and Charlie Cannon bowled the 18th over for 17 runs. Jacob finished the innings with another wicket (3-0-3-15) St. Margaretsbury has amassed 169 runs. Some uncharacteristic dropped catches and fielding errors had cost Reed a few runs. 169 was going to be a tough chase. The Opening Pairing of Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge went after the opening bowling pairing and were looking good right up the last ball of the 6th over, when Ollie saw his stumps skittled, falling for 9. Reed were 36 for 1 off 6. Jacob followed in the 8th over falling for 26 and Reed were on 39 for 2 with George Wood and Charlie Walters at the crease. George (5) was caught in the 11th over.
