It’s over!

After nearly a decade in the Premier divisions, Reed had to bow out after losing the final game of the season to Broxbourne by 51 runs. However the outcome could have been different had catches been taken and shot selection been better as Reed were up with the run rate throughout their innings. Once again this season, the opposition was in deep trouble to start with slumping to 67 for 6 after 21 overs thanks to some fine bowling by Jack Tidey (4-24) well supported by Toby Fynn (1-31). Yet in customary fashion they recovered as Connor Ridley (57) and Aussie Darcy Murphy (90) put together a stand of 82 whilst the Reed bowlers could not polish off the innings as they posted 228 for 9. Another good opening partnership of 60 between Sean Tidey (40) and Sam Osborne (21) in just 10 overs gave the hosts a solid platform, but they could not build on it as several batsmen made starts, but got themselves out. Only Tom Greaves with a chanceless 28 helped to compile a total of 177. Thus ends a "season horribilis", but we can look forward to playing in a league where we should be able to thrive. Better at Broxbourne

Reed Firsts produced their best batting display of the season at Broxbourne, but still lost by six wickets. Their innings was given momentum by a century second wicket partnership between Kallum Ward (88) and Rob Lankester (44). The former was in his usual aggressive form hitting 10 boundaries, whilst Lankester was striking the ball beautifully until the wind caught a well timed drive that was brilliantly caught on the boundary. Ward perished in similar fashion, leaving Jack Caine (38 not out) to continue his form from last week, well supported by Sam Osborne, Vibes Gadhvi and Sean Tidey. 246 for 5 seemed a good total, but on a benign pitch it did not prove sufficient. Broxbourne's opening stand of 139 between Kegan Eales and Alex O'Sullivan (51) was ended when Lankester caught the latter off his own bowling. Hopes were raised when Sam Osborne had Eales stumped by Ward with his second ball on an agonising 99 and immediately had captain George Davies caught for a duck. However, Connor Ridley made a rapid 50 despite the best efforts of the Reed bowlers to contain him. Indeed Reed bowled well on such an easy paced wicket: Julien Fynn only going for 46 from 15 consecutive overs either side of tea and William Heslam picking up the other wicket to fall. Overall, Reed's best performance so far giving encouragement for some victories in the second half of the season. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Absent, Injured and Out

With 17 players from the First and Second XIs either unavailable or injured, clearly both sides were on a hiding to nothing. Reed Firsts even included two injured quick bowlers to make up numbers! Their opponents duly obliged as Broxbourne recorded two century stands, George Davies leading both with 143 not out , well supported by Niles Robinson (68) and Darcy Murphy (32 not out). Toby Fynn and Matt Giblin both claimed a couple of wickets, but Broxbourne racked up an impressive 290 for 5 declared. To make matters much worse, Reed slumped to 11 for 5 against the pace of Connor Ridley and Murphy, the former finishing with 4 for 32. Thankfully Matt Sampson (61) and Stuart Smith (29) survived to compile their own century stand, giving the score some semblance of respectability. However, their departure wasn't the end as the last 3 wickets added 64, mainly through Sean Tidey (18) and Toby Fynn (27), plus a penalty 5 runs for a helmet infringement! Aussie Murphy had the final say though, his pace accounting for 3 of the last 4 wickets to fall. Let's hope more players are available for the trip to Shenley Village next week as we reach the halfway mark in the season. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

U15s struggle against Broxbourne

Broxbourne won the toss and elected to bowl. Openers Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge attacked the Broxbourne bowlers from the first ball, scoring a quick-fire 22 from the first 3 overs, with any loose balls heading to the boundary. A wicked delivery in the 4th over saw Ollie Cambridge caught for 6 from 12. George Wood came to the crease. A change of bowlers slowed the run-rate, and the scoreboard pressure told, with Jacob being stumped after chasing the spinner, ending on 19 from 32. Newly-invigorated Eddie Cook joined George and his attacking style started to bring Reed back into the game, scoring freely until missing one – bowled on 17 from 21 – An excellent contribution. Oli Tapsell made a cameo appearance 1st ball 4, 2nd ball out. Daniel Vincent played a similar cameo 1 from 2 Reed were back in trouble on 83 for 5 in the 15th over. The saving grace was that we had surpassed our previous total against Broxbourne! And with plenty of batters left in the hutch, George and Callum Ricketts were free to swing. And they duly obliged ....... There were only 8 dot balls from the remaining 27 and Reed ended on a creditable 114 for 5. George Wood 22 from 26, and Callum Ricketts 13 from 14. With the openers doing their job of seeing off the opening bowling spell, the rest of the team are starting to open up and accelerate the run rate. Whilst vastly improved from the 83 scored in the 1st match of the season, defending 114 was always going to be difficult, and Reed needed to take wickets. George Wood and Ollie Cambridge formed the opening seam/spin pairing which has worked [...]

Tough start for Reed Under 15s

Reed started the season with one of the toughest opponents of the season, Broxbourne, away. Broxbourne won the toss and elected to bat. Reeds opening bowlers showed some winter rust and started haemorrhaging extras.... After 6 overs, Broxbourne were at 58 for 1, having scored just 10 off the bat. The only highlight being Liam Neal's catch off George Wood's bowling. After their opening batter was dismissed (caught Oli Tapsell, bowled O Cambridge), Broxbourne accumulated runs in the middle overs with their strongest batters at the crease. Jake Vincent bowled an impressive spell, taking 2 for 10 off 2 overs and slowing the run rate. Broxbourne finished with a flourish, with plenty of batters left in the pavilion, they could let loose, with Callum Ricketts (3-0-1-16) and Charlie Cannon (2-0-0-21) feeling the brunt of the batting. Broxbourne finished on 161 for 5, with the wayward bowling accounting for 46 of the runs. With such a tough total to chase, Reed were always feeling the pressure.... With the light fading, batting was always going to be tricky. With opening batter, Jacob Vincent reaching 36 before being dismissed, the remaining batters never looked comfortable batting in the evening gloom. A final flourish from Eddie Cook (10 from 7) earned Reed an extra bonus point, finishing 82 for 9 from the 20 overs. Going forward, Reed need to be a little more aggressive with the bat, and a little more positive with the running... Next Up, another tough opponent in Bishops Stortford 1s. Hat-trick not enough to save Reed

Reed Under 13s entertained undefeated Broxbourne 1s on an overcast evening. With Broxbourne cruising at the top of the table, and Reed on a winning streak, this was looking to be an entertaining fixture. A battle between the free-flowing batting of Broxbourne, against the unpredictable bowling of Reed. Whichever way this went, Reed needed a healthy haul of points to keep in the race for 3rd place. With Broxbourne winning the toss and electing to bat, Reed's start couldn't have been better. The first choice opening bowling pairing of Daniel Vincent and Callum Ricketts stepping up to face Broxbourne batsmen who have scored freely all season. Daniel opened strongly, with just 2 runs off the first over, before Callum strolled in and bowled an over of a lifetime... Dot Dot WICKET (ct Eddie Cook) WICKET (ct Aaron Nash) WICKET (ct Eddie Cook) Single Broxbourne were reeling and Reed were on a high. Callum took the dangerous wicket of Dylan Stark in his second over - yet another close-quarters catch from Eddie Cook. Broxbourne were on 12 for 4 off 4 overs. Daniel finished his spell on a respectable 3-0-0-16, and Callum on the ludicrous 2-1-4-1, reserving an over for the death. The sheer depth of Broxbourne's batting line up quickly came to the fore, and the next three bowlers faced swift retribution... Lily Hall (1-0-0-8), Gethin Hill (3-0-0-27), Eddie Cook (3-0-0-24). Broxbourne were flying.... finishing the 13th over on 94 for 4. Tom Green entered the maelstrom and steadied the ship a little... but by this point, Broxbourne weren't taking any prisoners and the boundaries just kept coming. Tom eventually made a breakthrough in his third over, ending on 3-0-1-17, but by then the damage [...]

Reed under 9s go top!

Reed Under 9s were again on their travels to previously unbeaten Broxbourne. Having 2 games scheduled over 2 days, Reed near on had a complete change of team from the team picked for the Sunday game, to ensure that all players were picked to play a game. Batting first Reed, Josh (10) and Seb were tied down by the best opening bowling we had seen this year, taking Reed to 216. Before Rebecca (5 not out) and Rose (6) including a belting 4 put on a further 18. Young Isaac (4 not out) and James took Reed to 253. Before our steady rocks at the end Harry (7 not out) and Jack (7 not out) with great tip and run took us to a good score of 267 for 5. In reply Reed got off to our best bowling start of the season, not bowling a wide for 21 balls. This may seem a small improvement but something that the coaches have been working on at training. Reed bowled tight and straight throughout and wickets were taken by James (1-9), Rebecca (1-15), Seb (1-4) and Josh (1-1). Both Josh and Isaac (0-3) bowled 12 balls with only 1 ball being hit off the bat. Reed ended up winning by 38 runs with Broxbourne finishing on 229-5. The Reed coach Simon Jackson, was ecstatic after the game saying "Broxbourne were a strong side who bowled really well but through sensible batting and running we got a good total of 267. And then through tight bowling and fielding, including a great catch by Rebecca and a direct hit run out by Seb, gave Broxbourne no chances at all. It was a great game played in a good [...]

Victory – At Last!

After 2 barren years, the U13s recorded their first league victory against top-of-the-table Broxbourne 2s in a closely fought match that went down to the wire. Broxbourne won the toss and elected to put Reed into bat - A decision which appeared to be paying off as Reed struggled to accumulate runs against tight bowling. Opener Eddie Cooke was bowled cheaply (1), bringing newcomer Lewis Abdul-Karim to the crease in the 5th over with Reed on 12 runs. Lewis's years perfecting his golf swing proved useful in the middle as he found the boundary twice before being run out to a direct hit from deep on 9 runs. Reed were 47 for 2 in the 10th over. Tom Green came to the crease knowing that the run rate needed to improve if Reed were going to post a defendable total - which he duly did until opener Callum Rickets was bowled on 13. The dynamic partnership of Tom Green and Daniel Vincent rarely disappoints and the run rate accelerated again with quick-witted running between the wickets and continuous strike rotation Reed raced past 100 runs before Tom shipped a catch to a fielder.... departing agonisingly close to retirement on 29; closely followed by Daniel (18) - who found a fielder whilst trying to clear the boundary in the 19th over. Aaron Nash added a quick-fire 5 in 4 balls - partnered by Lily Hall (bowled - 0) and Tash McNamara (0) who closed out the innings. Reed posted a respectable 124 Reeds bowling needed to be composed and tight - Which is was... The opening partnership of Callum Ricketts (2-0-0-4) and Daniel Vincent (3-0-0-12) kept Broxbourne honest... but they decided to go after Lewis Abdul-Karim, [...]
