Awards Winners 2019

Awards Winners 2019 Congratulations to all the Winners of the various Club Awards that were presented at the Annual Dinner on Saturday. Reed Cricket Club celebrated its most significant season in their history on Saturday at their Annual Awards Presentation Dinner held at the Old Bull Inn, Royston. Having already seen the Second XI head Division 4B in the Hertfordshire League with a more than comfortable 35-point margin the 1st XI had a momentous weekend the following week with a triumphant play-off match to achieve promotion to the Herts Premier League for the first time followed by their third victory in the National Village Cup sponsored by The Cricketer Magazine and hosted by MCC at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. The Club’s Captains distributed Trophies to the various individuals who had contributed worthy performances during the season and to other Club members who consistently carry-out largely unnoticed “behind the scenes” tasks. Club Chairman Stuart Smith congratulated the winners as well as thanking all the players who had represented Reed in this fantastic year. He said that performances across the board were greatly improved but the Club should not rest on its laurels. RCC should be encouraging more playing and social members and to bridge the gap by introducing more Colts into Open-Age weekend cricket and to involve their parents in the Club’s activities. Stuart concluded by saying how very proud he was to be Chairman of Reed at this exciting time in its history as the players look forward to next season’s challenges. This year’s winners are listed below. To see previous winners, (going back decades in some cases), look at the “History” pages on this website. The background explanations for the particular award are [...]

Honorary Secretary’s Report, 2019

At the time of drafting this Report, there are still four weeks to go before this year’s AGM and I shall begin by recounting various activities and events that occurred during these past 12 months, but not necessarily in chronological order. Last autumn I reported that only 19 members attended the 2017 AGM. I am pleased to report this year that all of those same 19 members were in attendance again at the 2018 AGM and that they were joined by a further 24 members; 28 of the aggregation had played matches that year, so all the voting criteria was able to be met this time. With regard to changes to the General Committee, Phil Frenay stood down from the Second XI captaincy and was replaced by Ed Garrott. As forewarned, Cilla Robertson gave up two of her three roles and although she remained as Membership Secretary, Hannah Heslam took-on Colts Liaison whilst Chloe Robertson became Welfare Officer. The new role of Saracens Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League Representative was created as a separate position on our General Committee and Michael Robertson was elected as the first post-holder. (Previously Richard Robertson had been the Club’s liaison with the SHPCL but it was not an official “committee position”). Peter Tidey and Karl Ward both did not seek re-election to the General Committee although Karl remained Second XI Vice-Captain until partway through the season. Those vacancies on the Committee allowed Richard Johnson and Matt Giblin opportunities to be elected “Without Portfolio”. All other officials were re-elected in their existing roles. Remarkably, our Committee now contains four married couples on it – this must be a record! Outside the Committee positions, Jack Tidey did not wish to continue as [...]

End of Season Reviews, Captains & Colts’ Managers

1st XI REPORT 2019 A view from inside the boundary, an end of season review. It’s been a little under a month since the end of the cricket season now and I think it’s about time I put my reflections on an unbelievable season down on paper! It all started on May 4th (a fairly significant date for me!) when we made the trip over to Potters Bar to give it our best shot of upsetting the big boys in the Herts T20 Cup Group stage. As usual we were first game on, having travelled furthest to get there. We arrived with a little bit of optimism but fairly confident that we would be in the car on the way home in a little over 3 hours! Our opponents North Mymms, who we knew very little about, other than they had a few Minor County representatives and a medium pacer from Langleybury playing for them. I felt our best chance of winning the game was to have a bowl and see what we had to chase. Mymms started well reaching 45 without loss, before I brought on our star Aussie import Zac McGuigan. Having only landed in the country a few days before nobody, including myself, really knew what to expect but with his first ball on English soil he nicked off the NM opener with a fairly sharp nut and then things started happening. As per usual our bowling attack was tidy and before we knew it NM were on the ropes at 60-5. This was followed by the introduction of my spin twin Sean Tidey, who quickly wrapped up the innings and in what seemed like a blink of an eye, we had [...]
