End of Season Reviews, Captains & Colts’ Managers

1st XI REPORT 2020 A lot of positives to take out of a very strange first Premier League season. We managed to get 8 games in and although we only won 1, we pushed most teams hard and made a bit of a name for ourselves in the League that we won’t be push overs. Will Heslam made a sublime 100 whilst chasing 227 over at Welwyn. A game in which ex-Test match player Owais Shah was playing. We ended 7 runs short in one of the games of the season. This ended up being a bit of a habit and probably a lack of experience at the top level cost us a couple of times. However huge positives were to be taken from performances by Jack Tidey in particular. Home grown and proving to be the number 1 bowler in the Premier League at his first time of asking was a huge achievement and I’m sure only a small sign of things to come. Mitchell Cooper also played superbly well averaging well into the 40s showing great maturity with the bat coupled with ball striking on another level. We hope that things get back to some kind of normality for the 2021 season. With plenty of positives to take into the spring my hope is that we can maintain our Premier League status, look to continue to build our squad and play lots of entertaining cricket at the green. In the meanwhile I hope you all stay safe, and that current times will all be a distant memory soon. Fingers crossed I’ll share a cold one with you all during the summer. Go well! End of Season Reviews, Captains & Colts’ Managers

1st XI REPORT 2019 A view from inside the boundary, an end of season review. It’s been a little under a month since the end of the cricket season now and I think it’s about time I put my reflections on an unbelievable season down on paper! It all started on May 4th (a fairly significant date for me!) when we made the trip over to Potters Bar to give it our best shot of upsetting the big boys in the Herts T20 Cup Group stage. As usual we were first game on, having travelled furthest to get there. We arrived with a little bit of optimism but fairly confident that we would be in the car on the way home in a little over 3 hours! Our opponents North Mymms, who we knew very little about, other than they had a few Minor County representatives and a medium pacer from Langleybury playing for them. I felt our best chance of winning the game was to have a bowl and see what we had to chase. Mymms started well reaching 45 without loss, before I brought on our star Aussie import Zac McGuigan. Having only landed in the country a few days before nobody, including myself, really knew what to expect but with his first ball on English soil he nicked off the NM opener with a fairly sharp nut and then things started happening. As per usual our bowling attack was tidy and before we knew it NM were on the ropes at 60-5. This was followed by the introduction of my spin twin Sean Tidey, who quickly wrapped up the innings and in what seemed like a blink of an eye, we had [...]

End of Season Reviews, Captains & Colts’ Managers

1st XI REPORT 2018 A fairly disappointing season for the First Team this year! We once again held our own in the league and beat most sides but consistency throughout the season in selection let us down. However, there were lots of positives to take away from the season. Our bowling attack went from strength to strength with all 5 of our main bowlers taking over 20 wickets on some fairly flat pitches which was very encouraging. With the bat we passed 300 on a couple of occasions and 4 hundreds were scored but sadly we could not score consistently and this probably cost us a top 2 spot. We had some impressive performances from the first team fringe players, Richard Barlow impressed when selected, as did Matt Bowles and Jack Caine, hopefully these guys can kick on from here and really push for a place in the side on a more permanent basis. Unfortunately our campaign to defend our NVC crown this year never really got going, losing to Langleybury in the first round, although we did have our revenge on them in the final game of the league season, beating them and sending them down into Division 1. With that said we wish them all the best and hope to see them back in the championship in the near future. Moving forward into next season, I’m fairly sure there won’t be any cricket season weddings which should help out with the availability! We will be starting winter nets in February and hope to have a big pre-season so we can hit the ground running in May, where we will be playing for a big promotion push and also another trip back to Lord’s. [...]

End of Season Reviews, Captains & Colts’ Managers

1st XI REPORT 2017 A season of “what ifs” for the First Team this year! Once again we proved ourselves to be in the top four teams in the Championship Division and if it hadn’t been for some availability issues I could now be writing this as a Premier League Captain. However, there were lots of positives to take away from the season. We beat every team in the League this year with the exception of Dunstable where rain halted our progress over at their place, showing we really aren’t far away from winning this League. Jack Tidey, back in the side after a lengthy stretch away with injury, was very pleasing to see, and towards the back end of the season was starting to really look back to his old way. Ed Wharton having another fine season with bat and ball, and backed-up by the Heslam brothers, Rob Lankester, Sean Tidey and some handy lower order hitting from myself, Stuart Smith and Mitchell Cooper. Rich Wharton also contributing with some match-winning knocks and outstanding performances with the gloves throughout the season. Mike Catt at the age of just 15 made his First Team debut and hit 66 not out in only his second innings, proving he really will be one to watch in the future. Our bowling attack served us well as per usual with Ed and Jack leading the way supported by Toby Fynn and our spinners. On a slightly sadder note, Chris Jackson, the “granddad” of the First Team, has decided that after 22 years, (I think), he is going to hang-up his First Team boots. I wouldn’t even like to guess how many first team runs Chris has scored but he [...]

End of Season Reviews, Captains & Colts’ Managers

1st XI REPORT 2016 The 1st XI had a mixed 2016 season, starting well, only losing once in the first 5 games to eventual league champions Letchworth. However, this run of good form wasn't to last as inconsistency with the bat and some weak availability meant we were far from our best at various points in the season. New signing, Minor-County opening bowler Ed Wharton, proved his worth throughout the season consistently picking up wickets ably supported by Toby Fynn, Mitchell Cooper, Sean Tidey and myself. The main men with the bat this year were William Heslam, Richard Wharton, James Heslam and Chris Jackson who all scored important match winning runs throughout the season, particularly Will and Rich. Youngster Rob Lankester also impressed in his first season in the first team, proving the colts system at the club is really working well and producing quality players. Without setting the world on fire this year we have comfortably maintained our position in the Herts. Championship Division, which is pleasing as the standard seems to be improving year on year. Good news has come from the Doctors in the last couple of weeks, meaning that Jack Tidey will be fit to start the 2017 season to open the bowling with Ed, and I feel they will strike off a very dangerous partnership next season, backed up by all the guys that have done well this year. With hard work in the nets over the winter and a strong pre-season there is no reason why we shouldn't be pushing for a Top 2 spot next year and go for promotion to the Premier League. We are always on the lookout for players that could strengthen the team, but [...]
