Sanderson fifty not enough as Reed bow out of the National Village Cup

Reed travelled to Redbourn in the Regional Final of the National Village Cup after the game had to be rearranged due to Reed's ground being unavailable. Winning the toss, Redbourn elected to bat, they set off quickly until Jack Tidey (8-1-28-1) bowled Ed Hales for 5 with the score on 20, his brother Will fell for 28 to Toby Fynn (8-2-27-1), Fynn coming back well after his first three overs went for 22. Yorath and Cutler set about building an innings defining partnership of 146. Both fell in consecutive overs to skipper Rob Lankester (5-0-30-1) and Will Heslam (8-0-52-3). The remaining batters took Redbourn to a competitive total of 235 for 6 off their 40 overs. Will Heslam and Kallum Ward set off well in reply until Ward was caught for 10, a superb run out dismissed Sam Osborne for just 3 and when Heslam mistimed a slow ball to be caught for 16 and Reed were wobbling at 45 for 3. 17-year-old Max Sanderson came to the wicket to join Skipper Lankester and the two set about rebuilding the innings with some powerful hitting and good running between the wickets. Their partnership had reached 61, when Lankester was adjudged LBW for 33. Despite wickets falling around him Sanderson reached his well deserved fifty off 70 balls, he was the ninth wicket to fall for 52, despite a 25 run stand for the last wicket between Fynn and Giblin, Reed were all out for 175 losing by a 60 run margin. Ward and Lankester onslaught down Langleybury

Reed travelled to Langleybury in the Regional Semi-Final of the National Village Cup on Sunday. Winning the toss skipper Rob Lankester asked the hosts to bat. Tight bowling from both Toby Fynn (8-1-18-2) and Jack Tidey (8-0-25-2) were well rewarded as Langleybury were wobbling at 29 for 4. A brief respite came with a fifth wicket stand of 46 between Roe and Ross before a smart caught and bowled by Chris Chambers (8-0-42-2) ended Ross's knock. Reed's changed bowlers of Chambers, Julien Fynn (8-1-31-1) and Sean Tidey (8-0-31-1 ) backed up the opening bowling spells as they restricted the hosts to 160 for 9 off 40 overs. Roe top scoring with a truculent 58. With only a shade over four runs an over needed, Reed set off confidently with Will Heslam and Kallum Ward building a partnership quickly. Heslam fell for 11 (32-1) brought 17 year old Sam Osborne to the crease he was given lbw for 5 and Reed were then 48-2 in the 13th over. Rob Lankester joined Ward at the crease and the pair played near faultless cricket at they motored towards their target. Ward hit 7 fours and 2 sixes in his 75-ball 69 not out and skipper Lankester 3 fours and four sixes in a 45-ball 50 not out, their unbeaten 115 run partnership off a mere 88 balls. Lankester hit the winning runs with a six over the club house to secure an 8 wicket victory and a date away with Redbourn in the Regional Final on 4th June. Match Report submitted by Neil Haslam.

The National Village Cup “comes home”

In recognition of Reed CC winning the National Village Cricket Championship, (to give it it's original title), in 2012, 2017 and 2019, Club President, Andrew Emms, presented Tom Greaves a smaller-scale replica of the National Village Cup during last weekend's Chairman's Match. Once re-opened, the Cup will be on display in the Howard Marshall Pavilion soon.

Barlow heroics not enough as Reed bow out of the Village Cup

Reed welcomed Preston to The Green on Sunday afternoon in the Second Round of the National Village Cup. Winning the toss, Ed Garrott asked the visitors to bat, Julien Fynn (8-1-23-3) took a wicket with his first delivery. Preston found the going tough as both opening bowlers Rupert Martin (8-0-23-1) and Fynn bowled with accuracy. At the 20 over mark, Preston were 51 for 3 and struggling to make an impact. Karl Ward took a wicket in his third over and when Matt Bowles took the scalps of Collins and Plumb, the score was 74 for 6. Murrell joined Hill and the run rate now began to increase, Hill went to Bowles again, but Murrell marshalled the lower order before becoming Bowles' 4th victim (8-1-39-4). Anderson hit a quick 23 to take them to 167, being dismissed off 39.5 overs. Karl Ward ended with figures of 7.5-1-37-2. Reed opened with Richard Barlow and Stuart Smith, they had taken the score to 37 before Smith and then Karl Ward fell in the space of three balls in the tenth over to Gallimore. Kallum Ward soon followed, skipper Garrott was run out for 12 and when Scott Nash fell Reed were wobbling at 85 for 5. Barlow pushed on and yet again fell agonisingly short of a fifty, when he was bowled for 49. It seemed to knock Reed and their remaining wickets fell quickly, being bowled out for 111 in the 29th over. Match Report submitted by Neil Haslam. Note: Preston will now play Sawbridgeworth in Round 3. Sawbo beat Redbourn who were last year's runners-up in the Lord's Final.

Smith and Ward (KL) lead the way in Village Cup victory

Reed faced local rivals Hare Street and Hormead in the First Round of the 2021 National Village Cup. Having lost the toss, Reed were put into bat. and were in trouble at 13 for 2 after just 5 overs. A century partnership between Stuart Smith and Kallum Ward led the revival. Once Ward was out for 61 off just 46 balls, skipper Ed Garrott took up the reins with a further 70 runs added before Smith fell for 75 off 83 deliveries. Garrott (49) fell agonisingly short of his fifty. Michael Robertson (39) added some useful late runs with the lower order. Reed finished on 271 for 7 off their 40 overs. Hare Street opened their batting with former Reed colt Reece Fitzgerald and Hugh McNamara. McNamara fell early bowled lbw by Julien Fynn (5-0-25-1). Fitzgerald and Steel set about upping the run rate, Fitzgerald was out for exactly 50 with the score 99 for 2. Reed now tightened the screw in the middle overs with Giblin (8-1-14-3) and Garrott (8-0-41-1) leaving the visitors on 116 for 5, Chris Jordan supported Steel through a 47-run partnership for the 6th wicket, before Rupert Martin (7.5-0-44-2) and Karl Ward (6-0-44-2) returned to wrap up the innings for 169 in the 35th Over. The hard-hitting Steel might have brought-off a miracle if he had continued, and was tantalisingly close to a three-figure score when he was out, much to the relief of the Reed faithful. Reed now face Preston in the 2nd Round on 9th May after they had beaten Sharnbrook & Brougham comfortably in their Round 1 tie. Match report submitted by Neil Haslam.
