Shenley have a sting in their tail

A stunning stand of 70 at more than a run a ball by Shenley Village's ninth wicket pair a la Bairstow/Stokes stole the match from Reed after they looked set for their first win in four. Reed set off well with Sam Osborne moving confidently to 18 until Aussie Nissen made one leap on him and the keeper snaffled the chance. There was a repeat perfomance against Max Sanderson which the umpire adjudged to be out too. After a 57 run partnership between Will Heslam (34) and Zac McGuigan (37) Reed were going well at 90 for 2, but 4 quick wickets left them in trouble. However, Bertie Scott (20), Karl Ward (16) and, chiefly, skipper for the day Sean Tidey, with a sublime 48 steered them to 218 all out. Northants batter, Charlie Thurston, tucked into Reed's pace attack with a string of boundaries, but he carelessly lofted McGuigan to Sam Osborne at cover and when keeper, Kallum Ward, pouched a chance off McGuigan, Shenley were on the back foot. At tea though, they had rebuilt to 100 for 3. On the resumption, Toby Fynn took over, taking 4 for 60 from 19 consecutive overs with more help from Ward and Osborne in the field. 122 for 7 seemed to indicate a Reed victory, but even another Ward/McGuigan wicket couldn't halt the onslaught of Vekaria (29) and Shafiq (42) for the ninth wicket. They smashed 11 boundaries and one maximum offering just two difficult chances with no bowler immune from the barrage. Consequently, Shenley won by 2 wickets. Absent, Injured and Out

With 17 players from the First and Second XIs either unavailable or injured, clearly both sides were on a hiding to nothing. Reed Firsts even included two injured quick bowlers to make up numbers! Their opponents duly obliged as Broxbourne recorded two century stands, George Davies leading both with 143 not out , well supported by Niles Robinson (68) and Darcy Murphy (32 not out). Toby Fynn and Matt Giblin both claimed a couple of wickets, but Broxbourne racked up an impressive 290 for 5 declared. To make matters much worse, Reed slumped to 11 for 5 against the pace of Connor Ridley and Murphy, the former finishing with 4 for 32. Thankfully Matt Sampson (61) and Stuart Smith (29) survived to compile their own century stand, giving the score some semblance of respectability. However, their departure wasn't the end as the last 3 wickets added 64, mainly through Sean Tidey (18) and Toby Fynn (27), plus a penalty 5 runs for a helmet infringement! Aussie Murphy had the final say though, his pace accounting for 3 of the last 4 wickets to fall. U15s close out win against Welwyn

The opening partnership of Jacob Vincent and Oli Cambridge were hoping to get the team to a solid start, which was quickly thwarted when Jake played across the line to a straight ball and was bowled for 0. He was swiftly followed by Jake Garner, who was the wrong side of a dubious LBW decision. Reed found themselves on 12 for 2 from 3 overs. George Wood and Cambridge steadied the ship for a few overs, rotating the strike and punishing poor balls before George was caught for 10. Reed were on 37/3. Charlie Cannon went out and he and Cambridge decided to punish any wayward bowling, the pair putting on 31 runs until Cannon got caught for 8 runs in the 12th over, replaced by Dom Longland. Cambridge was run out in the next over, failing to slide his bat attempting a quick run... A quality 33 runs from 34 balls had brought Reed back into the match. Oli Tapsell came in, but fell in the following over on 8. Reed were 83 for 6 in the 14th. Charlie Browne went to the crease for the first time this season and didn't disappoint. Dom and Browne put on a partnership of 30 runs before Dom fell to a spectacular catch at mid-on. (23 from 15). Daniel Vincent fell in a carbon copy of his brother - playing across the line to a straight ball (bowled for 0). Reed were on 116 for 8 in the 17th over. Callum Ricketts scored 4 runs - another catch for Gaddi. Aaron Nash and Charlie Browne saw out the remainder of the overs finishing on 6 and 8 respectively. U15s struggle against Broxbourne

Broxbourne won the toss and elected to bowl. Openers Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge attacked the Broxbourne bowlers from the first ball, scoring a quick-fire 22 from the first 3 overs, with any loose balls heading to the boundary. A wicked delivery in the 4th over saw Ollie Cambridge caught for 6 from 12. George Wood came to the crease. A change of bowlers slowed the run-rate, and the scoreboard pressure told, with Jacob being stumped after chasing the spinner, ending on 19 from 32. Newly-invigorated Eddie Cook joined George and his attacking style started to bring Reed back into the game, scoring freely until missing one – bowled on 17 from 21 – An excellent contribution. Oli Tapsell made a cameo appearance 1st ball 4, 2nd ball out. Daniel Vincent played a similar cameo 1 from 2 Reed were back in trouble on 83 for 5 in the 15th over. The saving grace was that we had surpassed our previous total against Broxbourne! And with plenty of batters left in the hutch, George and Callum Ricketts were free to swing. And they duly obliged ....... There were only 8 dot balls from the remaining 27 and Reed ended on a creditable 114 for 5. George Wood 22 from 26, and Callum Ricketts 13 from 14. With the openers doing their job of seeing off the opening bowling spell, the rest of the team are starting to open up and accelerate the run rate. Whilst vastly improved from the 83 scored in the 1st match of the season, defending 114 was always going to be difficult, and Reed needed to take wickets. Tom and James sparkle in vain

Fine individual performances by Tom Greaves and James Heslam were ultimately in vain as Reed fell tantalisingly 18 runs short with 17 minutes of the game left to play. Hemel Hempstead Town chose to bat on an easy-paced wicket, but two quick wickets set them off to a slow start. Opener Ilengeratne gradually built what turned out to be a match winning innings of 67, supported by Dodson (34) and Finch (25). For Reed Toby Fynn bowled tidily unchanged for figures of 14 overs, 5 maidens, 29 runs, 2 wickets, but the star turn was Tom Greaves whose 16 overs yielded 5 wickets for just 30 runs. Zac McGuigan also contributed a wicket, catch and a run out. Hemel were dismissed for 181 with 9 balls remaining. The game seemed over when the top order collapsed to 76 for 6 due to spin wizard Mehta (18-8-27-3), but James Heslam and Bertie Scott (24) added 42 until the latter was caught and bowled by Parkins, who eventually took out the tail, finishing with 4 for 41. Heslam, however, steered the score through to 163, leaving the opposition biting their nails until Aussie, Jones, bowled Fynn with Heslam 50 not out. Lankester leads the charge

For the second successive game a century stand led Reed to a comfortable victory over Flitwick. This time, the partnership of 109 was between Rob Lankester (83 not out) and Zac McGuigan (40). However, when Flitwick cruised to 80 for their first wicket it looked like they were destined for a big score. The game turned when Lankester rose to catch skipper George Thurstance at mid-off just as he was set and three more quick wickets left Flitwick 86 for 4. Karl Ward (10-2-35-2) was the chief architect of the collapse. Yet it was another 60 runs before Reed captured the next wicket when McGuigan returned and from then on a string of dismissals left the visitors 207 all out. Tom Greaves in particular caught the eye with 2-20 from his 10 overs while Toby Fynn mopped up the tail. Reed started their reply slowly losing their two openers, who had scored so freely last week, but the third wicket partnership swung the match as Lankester especially tucked into the spinners with 9 boundaries and 3 maximums. As last week, the final impetus came from Greaves with 29 quick runs until he was caught going for the winning hit. This was left to Jack Caine as Reed romped to 210 for 4 in the 43rd over. U13s 3 in 3!

Our Under 13 team has made a pleasing start to their Cambridgeshire League with three out of three league wins. The league looks like it will be incredibly competitive as all three of our wins have been by small margins and one game elsewhere was tied! First up was a trip to City of Cambridge with a handful for U11s helping us out we won the toss and elected to field. The game was played just off Long Road near to the home of Cantabs rugby club and it appears over the years they have seen sense and switched the wicket round to avoid the problem of trains passing behind the bowlers arm from one end. Playing in the Cambs league is a new experience for many of these players and we started brightly with wickets for Lily Hall, Charlie Ingrey, Joseph Rhodes, Finley Brown and Aaron Nash as well as a smart run out by Daf Hill. They ended on 106 for 7 and we were not sure what resembled a good score but we set about chasing it down with some steady partnerships, most notably 31 before the fall of the first wicket. Opening batters Josh Heslam and Aaron Nash, (recognise those surnames!?) looked very steady before Nash (8) was bowled trying to increase the tempo. Oliver Walters (4) and Heslam (retired for 24) added another 30 before Matthew Barons (11) and Rhodes (10) helped us make a winning start with some late power hitting from Hill (6) and Ingrey (5) we reached our target in the final over. Reed U11s make it a perfect 8 out of 8 at the halfway stage!

The impressive Reed Under 11s squad continued their excellent start to the season making it a perfect 8 wins out of 8 matches with two further wins for both their A and B teams in the last few weeks. The first of the victories for the A team came against Letchworth at a well-attended sunny Reed Green where although scoring quickly Reed youngsters were in a spot of bother at 33 for 4, however 9 year-old Eddie Heslam accompanied by Jon Green batted with great maturity and stabilised the innings with them both retiring on 25 and 26 respectively as Reed continued through their full 20 overs totalling 135 for 8, a total they felt confident of defending. This proved to be the case as early wickets for the intimidating opening pair of Charlie Ingrey and Josh Heslam saw Reed on their way, and with the usual tight Reed fielding piled on the pressure producing two excellent direct hit run outs from Green and J Heslam so Letchworth were soon struggling in their reply. Further wickets for Ollie Kimsey, Zac Rouse (2-6) and Eddie Heslam saw Letchworth subside to 52 all out in 11.4 overs. A comprehensive win for Reed and a good all-round cricketing performance by all the boys, well martialled by Captain Josh Heslam. The 2nd win for the Reed A team came in much more comfortable circumstances away to Hatfield Hyde. U15s run chase comes up short

Reed hosted St. Margaretsbury on the back of three wins on the bounce. St. Margaretsbury won the toss and opted to bat first. Aggressive batting against the opening pairing of Charlie Walters and Ollie Cambridge meant that SM were off to a flier, scoring 41 runs off the first 5 overs. Ollie C (who had been unusually expensive to this point) then struck... Removing both openers in the space of 3 balls. Finishing with figures of 3 overs, 0 maidens, 2 wickets for 28 runs. Charlie finishing his spell with 3-0-0-17. George Woods and Callum Ricketts made up the second Seam / Spin pairing, but St. Margaretsbury's onslaught didn't let up.... After 12 overs, SM were on 102 for 2 (GW 3-0-0-27, CR 3-0-0-20). Olli Tapsell and Jacob Vincent tried to stem the flow, with Jacob getting wickets with his 6th and 7th balls. OT finished his overs on 2-0-0-19. Jacob saved himself for the last over... Daniel Vincent bowled steady (2-0-0-15), and Charlie Cannon bowled the 18th over for 17 runs. Jacob finished the innings with another wicket (3-0-3-15) St. Margaretsbury has amassed 169 runs. Some uncharacteristic dropped catches and fielding errors had cost Reed a few runs. 169 was going to be a tough chase. The Opening Pairing of Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge went after the opening bowling pairing and were looking good right up the last ball of the 6th over, when Ollie saw his stumps skittled, falling for 9. Reed were 36 for 1 off 6. Jacob followed in the 8th over falling for 26 and Reed were on 39 for 2 with George Wood and Charlie Walters at the crease. George (5) was caught in the 11th over. WILL AND SAM STAND OUT AT HITCHIN

An opening stand of 166 between Will Heslam (106) and Sam Osborne (55), providing the anchor, gave Reed the impetus to post a fine score against Hitchin on a road. Both openers rode their luck, surviving sharp chances in the slips, but Heslam was in fine form hitting 14 boundaries and Osborne gave him steady company with his second half century of the season. When both were out in quick succession you feared another batting collapse, but Rob Lankester, Zac McGuigan, Sean Tidey and Bertie Scott all made double figures, although Tom Greaves fired a swift 30, including two maximums, to ensure Reed totalled 254 for 6 in their 50 overs. Hitchin were beset with injuries caused during the game to two of their top three batters, but that did not hamper A.J. Momi, who smashed 87 with 10 boundaries and 4 maximums, despite batting with a runner throughout. However, unlike in Reed’s innings, he was not supported by his top order, which succumbed to the spin of Scott and Greaves, taking two wickets apiece. A defining moment came when McGuigan returned with a fiery spell of 2-13, including the prize wicket of Momi, trapped in front. Only wicketkeeper, Dryden (37) caused a flutter of concern, but Toby Fynn with 3-35 cleaned him up to leave Hitchin on 214.
