Reed win close contest – At Last!

Having lost 3 recent close games from a winning position, the Firsts seemed destined to throw away another against Flitwick. Needing just 136, they collapsed to 114 for 7, but this time an unbroken eighth wicket stand saw them home. The hosts at fist seemed on course for a big total when they cruised to 77 for 1, but for once it was the opposition who collapsed. Only two batters reached double figures as Zac McGuigan and Tom Greaves tore through their line up with the help of two terrible run outs. When both Thurstances were dismissed without scoring, the innings started to unwind, (McGuigan the instigator with an LBW and run out). Then Sri Lankan Wankhade holed out to Bertie Scott from Greaves's bowling for 63. 123-6 at lunch soon became 135 all out as Greaves (4-24) and Scott with a wicket maiden polished off the tail. A special mention should be made of McGuigan who, in Toby Fynn's absence, bowled unchanged throughout the innings, never dropping his express pace to record figures of 20-3-77-3, which made sure the Flitwick batters were unable to settle. In a mirror image of their innings, Reed started well with Rob Lankester (38) and McGuigan (28) mastering Flitwick's talented spin trio, taking the score to 75 for 2. However the inevitable collapse of the middle order happened with Lankester's demise. Skipper George Thurstance then rolled the dice with the introduction of leggie, Lowe, who immediately bowled McGuigan with his first ball and Greaves with his fifth. 22 were needed by the last 3 wickets and as Reed lost the same number for no runs against Old Owens when only 6 were required, the writing was on the wall. Lankester leads the charge

For the second successive game a century stand led Reed to a comfortable victory over Flitwick. This time, the partnership of 109 was between Rob Lankester (83 not out) and Zac McGuigan (40). However, when Flitwick cruised to 80 for their first wicket it looked like they were destined for a big score. The game turned when Lankester rose to catch skipper George Thurstance at mid-off just as he was set and three more quick wickets left Flitwick 86 for 4. Karl Ward (10-2-35-2) was the chief architect of the collapse. Yet it was another 60 runs before Reed captured the next wicket when McGuigan returned and from then on a string of dismissals left the visitors 207 all out. Tom Greaves in particular caught the eye with 2-20 from his 10 overs while Toby Fynn mopped up the tail. Reed started their reply slowly losing their two openers, who had scored so freely last week, but the third wicket partnership swung the match as Lankester especially tucked into the spinners with 9 boundaries and 3 maximums. As last week, the final impetus came from Greaves with 29 quick runs until he was caught going for the winning hit. This was left to Jack Caine as Reed romped to 210 for 4 in the 43rd over. Another good win as we go into the 60 over timed matches next week at home to Hemel. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Jackson and Ward (KJ) combo saves Reed II

It might not have been the longest of winters but for many it was the hardest. The only true remedy for the soul was the return of cricket. For Reed’s second eleven that all began in a friendly fixture away to Flitwick. The large boundary and shaggy outfield meant that value for shots was not really the case for Reed as they batted first. Struggling at 66 for 4 with half their allotted overs already used, it was looking like it was going to be a tough battle. However, the general rule was that if you play yourself in, you can cash-in later. For this there is no greater exponent than Chris Jackson. Support came in the form of Karl Ward and the pair both played masterful hands as they took advantage of an improving pitch. Adding 143 together, Ward was eventually out for 61 in the penultimate over. Whilst Jackson, unbeaten for 97, saw Reed through to their final score of 214 for 5. The reply by Flitwick never really bore fruit as Reed took wickets at steady intervals. Second eleven mainstays Rupert Martin, Julien Fynn and Karl Ward each took wickets. But the real stars were Greg McKinnell with his 4 wickets and young spinner Will Archer with his 2. Supported by some fantastic catches, Reed's bowlers ended the contest leaving them victors by 104 runs. Match report submitted by MJEB.

Cooper has Flitwick over a barrel in Reed win

Reed faced Flitwick in a 45 over friendly on Saturday. Flitwick inserted the hosts after winning the toss. Max Sanderson fell early but Ed Wharton carried on from his slugfest of the previous week with a 24-ball 21. Skipper Tom Greaves (51) and vice-captain Rob Lankester (39) took the score to over a hundred. A brief cameo from Jack Caine (21) brought Mitch Cooper to the crease. He punished any loose deliveries. After Greaves' dismissal he carried on with the lower order before falling for a 58-ball 77. Reed ended on 268-7. Bedfordshire and Flitwick captain George Thurstance opened the visitors' reply and looked to dominate the Reed opening attack. The 50 came up off just 45 balls. Fellow opener Amin fell with the score on 61, after a quick 30-run partnership with his brother Harry. Thurstance fell for a 46-ball 60. With their skipper now gone Flitwick appeared to go into their shell. Skipper Greaves 9-2-28-2, Kapil 9-1-44-3 and 14-year-old Sam Osborne 9-0-48-2 all took wickets at regular intervals. Even late runs from Peters with 33 and an unbeaten 43 from Hassan wasn't enough and the Beds. side fell 37 runs short. Much report submitted by Neil Haslam.

Flitwick spinners stifle Reed run chase

Having posted 259-7, Flitwick's spin duo South African David Powles and Sri Lankan Rumesh Buddhika contained Reed's batsmen so that they could only total 205-4 in an innings curtailed to 50 overs owing to rain breaks. Initially, Reed's seamers restricted their opponents to 57-3, including the prize wicket of Bedfordshire batsman, George Thurstance, bowled by Jack Tidey for 19. However, Harry Thurstance (71) and Buddhika (129 not out) shared a partnership of 157 until Tom Greaves trapped the former with the last ball of his 20 over spell. Tidey (2-32) and Zac McGuigan (2-62) chipped in with late wickets before the rain halted the innings two balls short. Ed Wharton set the host's innings off to a speedy start with a run a ball 55, but even he found the spinners hard to get away. Eventually both he and Greaves (15) holed out to Prowles, who also had the dogged McGuigan caught in the deep for a battling 37, finishing with the excellent figures of 19-4-49-3. Indeed the most exciting feature of this spell was umpire Brian 'Shep' Shepard crashing into the stumps, leaving him sprawling on the ground in his haste to fill in his overs chart! Although they were too far behind the run rate, Matt Sampson (40 not out) and Sean Tidey (28 not out), the latter with some audacious hitting, gave the crowd some late entertainment. Nevertheless, a game which eventually petered out due to the rain, ended with Flitwick gaining a "winning draw". Hoddesdon's 1-wicket victory over Letchworth has left Reed 38 points behind them, although only 2 points separate them from next week's opponents, Shenley Village. These last four matches of the campaign will be 50/50 matches with a [...]
