Reed U11s make it a perfect 8 out of 8 at the halfway stage!

The impressive Reed Under 11s squad continued their excellent start to the season making it a perfect 8 wins out of 8 matches with two further wins for both their A and B teams in the last few weeks. The first of the victories for the A team came against Letchworth at a well-attended sunny Reed Green where although scoring quickly Reed youngsters were in a spot of bother at 33 for 4, however 9 year-old Eddie Heslam accompanied by Jon Green batted with great maturity and stabilised the innings with them both retiring on 25 and 26 respectively as Reed continued through their full 20 overs totalling 135 for 8, a total they felt confident of defending. This proved to be the case as early wickets for the intimidating opening pair of Charlie Ingrey and Josh Heslam saw Reed on their way, and with the usual tight Reed fielding piled on the pressure producing two excellent direct hit run outs from Green and J Heslam so Letchworth were soon struggling in their reply. Further wickets for Ollie Kimsey, Zac Rouse (2-6) and Eddie Heslam saw Letchworth subside to 52 all out in 11.4 overs. A comprehensive win for Reed and a good all-round cricketing performance by all the boys, well martialled by Captain Josh Heslam. The 2nd win for the Reed A team came in much more comfortable circumstances away to Hatfield Hyde. This time the Reed batting order fired in full force with Josh Heslam and Ethan Fox running superbly together in another fine opening partnership before Fox was unlucky to be run out for a well made 16. Heslam went onto 28 retired as did the in-form Green (25), and with Luke [...]

Under 9s get off to winning start

Reed Under 9s were playing their 1st game of the season against an older Sawbridgeworth team on Thursday evening. The Reed team was made up of 1 under 9s, 6 under 8s and an under 7. And only 3 players had played 1 game each before! But the age and inexperience did not show and they loved every minute of their first game. They were led with the bat by Grace and Rebecca scoring 10, whilst Jack scored 12 but lost 5 runs when he was unfortunately out with a direct hit run out. Seb, Josh, Grace, James J, Rebecca, Harry and Jack all scored boundaries taking Reed to a score of 301 (Net). There should also be a good mention to James D, who has massively improved with the bat since training started 2 weeks ago. But with tight bowling from all the players Reed did not give Sawbridgeworth many bad balls or as many extras. Harry, Grace and Josh all took wickets, Seb a catch and Harry a run out in restricting Sawbridgeworth to a score of 276 (Net). All the players had a smile on their face from the 1st ball to the last ball….and until the game finished they hadn’t a clue they had won by 25 runs! The Reed coach was so pleased “bearing in mind only 1 player had trained with the club in 2020, the players had only had 2 training sessions this season and cricket is not an easy game to pick up they got it straight away. The players looked comfortable batting and bowling they bowled a good line and length which is amazing as they had not even played on a cricket wicket this season [...]

Reed II go top as Jackson tons up again

Reed 2nds surged to the top of Division 4B after sweeping aside struggling Sawbridgeworth 2nds. Reed won the toss and elected to bat, which they may have regretted when the in-form Richard Johnson nicked off second ball of the game. However this only served to bring Chris Jackson to the crease to join Phil Frenay. Jackson, fresh off of the back of an unbeaten century last week, picked up where he left off as he steadily and classily accumulated runs throughout the innings. He was ably supported by Phil Frenay (26), skipper Ed Garrott (43) and Marcus Baker (36 not out). Jackson carried his bat from the first over of the game, finishing on a magnificent 125 not out. That’s now 287 runs for Jackson without being dismissed. Reed finishing on 261 for 5. Sawbo’s response never really got going as Matt Giblin (7-2-15-2) continued his good form with two early wickets, ably supported by the miserly Rupert Martin (10-1-27-1), which along with a stunning run out by Matt Bowles at backward point, left the visitors 31 for 4. An aggressive middle order partnership, aided and abetted by some suspect Reed catching, did allow some form of recovery, but Julien Fynn (9-0-41-4) plugged away up the hill and deservedly picked up four wickets as his own good form continued. Another run out, this time from George Teeboon and a sharp caught and bowled by skipper Garrott then wrapped up the Sawbo innings on 134 all out. Reed won by 127 runs. Match Report submitted by MLB.

Reed Under 9s IIs unbeaten run continues

Reed were at home to Sawbridgeworth on Monday evening. Batting first Ollie and Luke batted solidly against Sawbridgeworth’s strongest bowlers, before Effie and Lily (who hit a great 4) followed up. Matthew and Lenny batted next and where the only pair not to get out. And then the hard-hitting Henry and Atharva finished off the innings where Reed scored 227-9. Henry top scored with 11, Ollie got 7 and Matthew 6. After an inspirational TeamTalk from captain Luke, Reed bowled tight and straight. Pick of the bowlers was Effie taking 4-5, Lily 2-1 (including a maiden) and Atharva 1-13. It got very tight and Sawbo needed 2 to win off the last two overs and in the penultimate over Luke bowled a maiden before Ollie bowled 5 dot balls leaving Sawbo needing 1 to tie or 2 to win off the last ball. Sawbo got bat on ball and with the encouragement of the away supporters they scampered through for a single to also finish on 227-9, so the game finished as a tie. This was a great advert for children’s cricket with every pair batting for four overs, bowling for two overs and importantly with every child walking off the pitch with a smile on their face.
