It’s tough at the top

Reed 1st XI met their match at the home of last year's Herts Premier League champions. Electing to bat first in a match reduced to 40 overs per side, Potters Bar steadily accumulated runs with careful batting. Gale (24) and Hussain (35) built the platform for their innings while Sri Lankan, Wijesuriya (50) and South African, Machado (31) accelerated the scoring rate with J. Scott , Bannister and Chapman finishing in a flurry of boundaries. 216-8 was a formidable total on a wind swept afternoon. Reed's bowlers toiled manfully with Toby Fynn in particular containing the openers to finish with figures of 8-2-27-1. Ed Wharton (2-45) and Kapil Dave (1-46) also deserve mention for bowling at the death and could have had further reward should sharp chances have been taken. The batsmen, in contrast, struggled against their host's accurate varied attack. Only Rob Lankester's stylish 53 caught the eye as he struck 5 fours and 2 sixes with a range of aggressive strokeplay. However, the quest for the big shot down the ground accounted for three of Reed's top four so when Lankester finally holed out the innings subsided losing 6 wickets for 26 runs in a total of 117 in 30 overs. Under 9s get off to winning start

Reed Under 9s were playing their 1st game of the season against an older Sawbridgeworth team on Thursday evening. The Reed team was made up of 1 under 9s, 6 under 8s and an under 7. And only 3 players had played 1 game each before! But the age and inexperience did not show and they loved every minute of their first game. They were led with the bat by Grace and Rebecca scoring 10, whilst Jack scored 12 but lost 5 runs when he was unfortunately out with a direct hit run out. Seb, Josh, Grace, James J, Rebecca, Harry and Jack all scored boundaries taking Reed to a score of 301 (Net). There should also be a good mention to James D, who has massively improved with the bat since training started 2 weeks ago. But with tight bowling from all the players Reed did not give Sawbridgeworth many bad balls or as many extras. Harry, Grace and Josh all took wickets, Seb a catch and Harry a run out in restricting Sawbridgeworth to a score of 276 (Net). All the players had a smile on their face from the 1st ball to the last ball….and until the game finished they hadn’t a clue they had won by 25 runs! The Reed coach was so pleased “bearing in mind only 1 player had trained with the club in 2020, the players had only had 2 training sessions this season and cricket is not an easy game to pick up they got it straight away. The players looked comfortable batting and bowling they bowled a good line and length which is amazing as they had not even played on a cricket wicket this season [...]

Reed U13s edge ever closer….

In their second match this week, Reed yet again showed solid bowling, restricting a developing Broxbourne side to just 112 runs - with some tight bowling at the death from Callum Ricketts (3 over 0 maidens 3 wickets for 11 runs) and Aaron Nash (2-0-2-8), with some strong fielding from Sam Dawson in his first match. Reed got off to a shaky start with two of the first three batsmen going for ducks, closely followed by the remaining opener. With Reed on 15 for 5, then 47 for 7, a swift end was in sight. However, a middle order mini-revival by Josh Heslam (18 Not Out) and Oscar Lamb (9) rotating the strike and accumulating byes and wides, it looked like Reed might just salvage a victory from the jaws of defeat. It was not to be, though, as Oscar lost his wicket, closely followed by Gethin - Leaving the Heslam brothers to face that final 4 overs for the last wicket. With the finishing line in site - The final wicket fell in the 17th over. Reed edge ever closer to what must be their first victory of the season - with a little help from the Heslam Brothers. Strong Bowling Performance by Reed U13s

Reed are starting to give strong performances with the ball, with an ever-increasing ability to take wickets.... A great stride forward from last season. 2 wickets apiece from Callum Ricketts (4 overs, 0 maidens, 2 wickets for 33 runs), Daniel Vincent (4-0-2-24) and Tom Green (4-0-2-15). Eddie Cook (4-0-1-20) is showing improved consistency this season and newcomer Lily Hall (2-0-1-3) showed great skill in her first ever match. It was mainly through a particularly strong batting performance from Bishop's Stortford captain, J Frans (31 Retired) that BSCC posted a defendable total of 115 for 9. With spirits high, Reed started strongly against the opening bowlers, scoring well off the first 4 overs, before Bishop's Stortford tightened the field, runs dried up and the pressure mounted on the openers. And much like London buses, once one wicket came... they kept on coming, with no-one adding significant runs after Callum Rickets (17) and Eddie Cook (15) were dismissed attempting to recover the run rate. Julien so nearly pulls off a fantastic Fynnish

Reed's Sunday XI entertained the travelling side Roving Reporters at The Green this weekend. Batting first Julien Fynn was out after just the second delivery. Younger brother Toby was joined by Marcus Baker and they took the score to 35 before Fynn and Peter Baker fell in successive deliveries to Candy. Paul Garrott, the Thirds' batting hero of Saturday, was out soon after and at 46 for 4, Reed were struggling. Enter Rhodri Hughes who with Marcus Baker set about rebuilding the innings. Baker reached his fifty off 66 balls but was out with adding to his half-century. Hughes continued his assault, though wickets fell regularly at the other end, a deserved fifty followed and he eventually fell for an 82-ball 65, he was helped on his way by younger brother Owen. Reed were dismissed for 156 with two balls remaining of their forty overs. it was Owen Hughes (8-0-37-1) who took Reed's first wicket in the first over. However, the Reporters built a partnership of 76 for the second wicket around Pike (50) and Wiggins (31), after both were dismissed by Will Archer (8-0-28-2), the score of 94 for 3 left the door slightly ajar. Archer in tandem with Steve Hughes (8-0-19-1) checked the run rate. With the last ten overs remaining the match was now evenly poised. Julien Fynn (6.4-0-35-3) began a spell that threatened to turn the match on its head. So much so that the visitors needed six runs off the last over and when Fynn took his third wicket on the first ball of that last over, Reed sensed the impossible. Twos worn down at Lutonian

With the League season just one week away, Reed Seconds travelled to Wardown Park to face fellow Division 3B team Lutonian in a 40 over friendly. Batting first on a chilly day Reed openers Richard Barlow and Max Sanderson started positively. They took the score to 41 before Sanderson mistimed a ball to be dismissed for 19. Last week's batting hero Chris Jackson continued in a similar vein before being bowled by H. Khan for 12. Barlow despite batting with a back injury looked certain for his fifty but it was H. Khan again who picked up his wicket for 40, Marcus Martin fell with the score still on 75. Lutonian's spinners began to put the squeeze on, and wickets began to fall at regular intervals. Skipper Ed Garrott led the resistance with a 41 ball 27. However after he was out the last wickets fell cheaply and they were out for 115 in the 37th over. Reed's bowlers were soon amongst the Lutonian batting when Julien Fynn (6-1-21-2) bowled Essa for 2 with the score on 9 in just the 3rd over. He followed that up with a second soon after as Z.Khan was caught by skipper Garrott with the score on 19. When Owen Hughes (6-0-31-1) bowled the skipper Awais 4 runs later, Reed sensed an opening. However this brought Walayat to the crease and he seemed very much in a hurry. Reed's bowlers had no answer and he raced to a 25-ball fifty. U13 Pre-Season Friendly shows promising signs

Reed U13s played a pre-league season friendly on a cold April evening at Letchworth last Thursday. Letchworth won the toss and decided to bat. Letchworth's strong batting line-up became immediately apparent, with the 1st 5 batsmen all reaching the required 20 runs, with the opener being particularly strong, retiring in just the second over. The run rate steadied down after this initial flurry... and the breakthrough eventually came when Daniel Vincent took the first wicket in the very last over. An additional wicket would have been claimed earlier.... had the fielders recognised the batsman had hit his own wicket and appealed! Lesson hopefully learned. With Reed chasing 152, the runs were always just a little behind the required rate, and with a very young squad was always going to be a tall order. After Jacob Vincent (a pre-arranged ringer from the U14s) and Eddie Cooke retiring early in the innings, runs proved difficult to accumulate against steady, accurate, bowling. A late flurry from Daniel Vincent (13 from 5 balls) was too little too late on what was, by then, a very chilly evening. Reed closed on 108 for 6. What was obvious from the very first ball was that this Reed team has shown great improvement over last season, with a far more controlled demeanour with both the bat and ball. Jackson and Ward (KJ) combo saves Reed II

It might not have been the longest of winters but for many it was the hardest. The only true remedy for the soul was the return of cricket. For Reed’s second eleven that all began in a friendly fixture away to Flitwick. The large boundary and shaggy outfield meant that value for shots was not really the case for Reed as they batted first. Struggling at 66 for 4 with half their allotted overs already used, it was looking like it was going to be a tough battle. However, the general rule was that if you play yourself in, you can cash-in later. For this there is no greater exponent than Chris Jackson. Support came in the form of Karl Ward and the pair both played masterful hands as they took advantage of an improving pitch. Adding 143 together, Ward was eventually out for 61 in the penultimate over. Whilst Jackson, unbeaten for 97, saw Reed through to their final score of 214 for 5. The reply by Flitwick never really bore fruit as Reed took wickets at steady intervals. Second eleven mainstays Rupert Martin, Julien Fynn and Karl Ward each took wickets. But the real stars were Greg McKinnell with his 4 wickets and young spinner Will Archer with his 2. Supported by some fantastic catches, Reed's bowlers ended the contest leaving them victors by 104 runs. Match report submitted by MJEB.

Cooper has Flitwick over a barrel in Reed win

Reed faced Flitwick in a 45 over friendly on Saturday. Flitwick inserted the hosts after winning the toss. Max Sanderson fell early but Ed Wharton carried on from his slugfest of the previous week with a 24-ball 21. Skipper Tom Greaves (51) and vice-captain Rob Lankester (39) took the score to over a hundred. A brief cameo from Jack Caine (21) brought Mitch Cooper to the crease. He punished any loose deliveries. After Greaves' dismissal he carried on with the lower order before falling for a 58-ball 77. Reed ended on 268-7. Bedfordshire and Flitwick captain George Thurstance opened the visitors' reply and looked to dominate the Reed opening attack. The 50 came up off just 45 balls. Fellow opener Amin fell with the score on 61, after a quick 30-run partnership with his brother Harry. Thurstance fell for a 46-ball 60. With their skipper now gone Flitwick appeared to go into their shell. Skipper Greaves 9-2-28-2, Kapil 9-1-44-3 and 14-year-old Sam Osborne 9-0-48-2 all took wickets at regular intervals. Even late runs from Peters with 33 and an unbeaten 43 from Hassan wasn't enough and the Beds. side fell 37 runs short. Much report submitted by Neil Haslam.

Ed’s up for Reed in Ely victory!

Reed began their 2021 season with a home friendly against the City Of Ely CC. Winning the toss on a sunny but cool day at The Green, Ed Wharton and Will Heslam opened the batting with Wharton in particular taking a liking to the Ely bowling. The 50 came up of just 40 balls and Wharton's own fifty came up soon after, off just 36 balls. The offspin of Vincett removed Heslam for 14 and Wharton for a 46-ball 66. At 84 for 2, Ely were trying to get back into the game but a-run-a-ball 23 from skipper Tom Greaves kept the scoreboard ticking over but then his wicket and that of Rich Wharton at 127 for 4 had the game evenly poised. Rob Lankester was now playing the anchor role and when Marcus Martin fell for just 4, he and Jack Caine set about taking the score over 200. The 50 partnership came off 62 balls and Caine, now having overtaken Lankester, brought up his half-century off 45 balls. Lankester fell for a rugged 45 then Caine (55 not out) and Toby Fynn (7 not out) took Reed to 228 for 6 of their 40 overs. After the break, Ely began their reply, however, the Reed opening attack of Ed Wharton (4-1-18-2) and Toby Fynn (5-2-20-2) made an immediate impact with two wickets each, plus a sharp slip catch by Tom Greaves left Ely at 25 for 4. Aniskowicz began the Cambridgeshire side's recovery with a 30-ball 50; being particularly hard on newcomer Kapil. Kapil though managed to pull things back with two quick wickets and Matt Bowles (3-1-5-2) took Aniskowicz for 72 off just 54 balls. Ely could offer no more resistance and [...]
