Seconds fall at Colney

Reed Seconds made the trip to London Colney on Saturday. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat and they began quickly punishing any loose bowling. The big hitting Raja fell to a brilliant gully catch from Matt Bowles off Owen Hughes (8-0-46-1) for 29 with the score on 35. It didn't check the hosts' momentum as they reached 100 when Chris Jackson snaffled a smart slip catch off Will Archer (9-0-54-1), Jack Caine (9-1-33-1) added Reed's third wicket and at 108 for 3 the match seemed evenly poised. The London Colney skipper Hadley and the opener Zeiderman rebuilt until Hadley became Matt Bowles's first wicket (9.2-1-44-4), another good catch from Jackson. Reed did well to stem the runs in the final overs, Karl Ward (10-1-43-1) bowled well, though his figures didn't do him justice, Charlie Walters chipped in with two late wickets (4-0-24-2) as Reed dismissed the hosts for 244 in the last of their 50 overs, denying them full batting points by just one run in the process. Reed set off quickly with Robertson and Caine opening the reply, Robertson was given LBW with the score on 15, and Jackson joined Caine and the pair punished any loose bowling and ran well between the wickets. Jackson's luck ran out as he played a ball that bounced back on to his stumps after having made 21. Last week's hero Walters survived only three balls before playing down the wrong line to be out for 0. Meanwhile Caine was putting himself into the anchor role but again bad luck came Reed's way as he was caught off a leading edge for 28, though he did deserve more. This led to Reed falling away as [...]

Walters and Archer are bright spots in Reed Seconds’ defeat

Reed Seconds welcomed Tewin Firsts to Cokenach last Saturday. Winning the toss Skipper Stuart Smith opted to bat first. Smith was the first wicket to fall run out for only one, the first of three run outs in the Reed innings. After Phil Frenay's dismissal at 23 for 2 brought 16-year-old Charlie Walters to the wicket and he hit his first delivery for four. Wickets fell intermittently but a 50 run partnership for the fifth wicket with Rich Barlow gave the team some home of posting a respectable score. Walters fell for a 75 ball 64, which included 9 fours and 2 sixes. Unfortunately the remaining batting fell away due to some tight bowling and great ground fielding from Tewin. At 165 for 8 off the maximum 50 overs, it felt that this was maybe 30 runs short on this particular batting wicket. Tewin put matters in perspective as they set off quickly in pursuit of their target. Phil Frenay took a catch of the bowling of Matt Bowles (10-0-44-1) and that checked the batting. 17-year-old Will Archer bowled with good drift and turn off the pitch and was unlucky not to take any wickets. Though the run rate was reduced significantly Reed couldn't find any further wickets as Tewin eventually reached their target inside 37 overs. Match Report submitted by Neil Haslam.

2nd XI REPORT 2021

It was great to have cricket back to some form of normality this season with the clubhouse and changing rooms open. It was a very interesting season for us in the Seconds where early on in the season I thought we had a good chance of promotion but then midway through the season I thought there was a chance of relegation as injuries and availability hit us. We eventually finished a very respectable 4th, winning 8 losing 7 and having 3 no results. Frustratingly if we hadn’t suffered injuries to key players such as Chris Jackson and Marcus Martin who we lost for over half a season I really believe we could have challenged for the second promotion position, especially as we comfortably beat West Herts in the home fixture who came 2nd by a distance. Lutonian were far too good for the division and won all 16 games they played by large margins. Although availability was a real challenge this year we did have a core group of players who I would like to mention. Matt Bowles and Julien Fynn were fantastic with the ball taking 17 and 16 wickets respectively, they both also contributed with the bat at important times. Rupert Martin and Anirudh a new player for this season both also took more than 10 wickets and were very reliable when called on. With the bat Kallum Ward was extremely consistent scoring over 350 runs. Talking of attacking batsman Mike Robertson was great for us this season too averaging over 20 and always giving the innings impetus that we required. I’d also like to thank Richard Barlow for stepping up to keep wicket a couple of times when required and doing a [...]

Garrott’s Century leads Reed 2nds to Victory

On a hot day at The Green, captain Ed Garrott won the toss and decided to bat first against the travelling Southgate Adelaide. It was a tough start for the Reed top order when 6' 6" opening bowler Connor Johnson reduced Reed to 27 for 3. This brought Kallum Ward and Ed Garrott together and they set about rebuilding the innings by taking the singles on offer, running hard between the wickets and putting away the bad ball. Ward eventually fell for 62 with Mehmood (10 overs, 1 for 53) breaking the 135-run partnership, Southgate then brought back opening bowler Johnson who quickly picked up the wicket of Mike Robertson and finished with exceptional figures of 4 for 35 from his ten. Garrott was ably supported by Kieran Mckinna (19) as they pushed the score upwards of 250 with Garrott scoring his first century for the club eventually falling for 114 to the bowling of Mahmood. A flurry of late wickets meant that Reed finished 281 all out off 48.5 overs. Reed’s opening bowlers Matt Giblin and U15 Charlie Walters started very economically keeping the Southgate openers below the required run rate, however they reached 50 without loss before Anirudh Vivekanandan entered the attack and took a wicket first ball. A couple of balls later Walters brilliantly ran out the other opener and Adelaide were reeling at 55 for 2. A 124-run partnership between J Coshlan and T Mahmood kept Southgate in the game however the run rate was continuing to climb. Spinner Matt Bowles removed Coshlan for 43 and he picked up a further 2 wickets to finish his 10 over with 3 for 59. Mahmood became the second centurion of the match finishing [...]

Fynn and Catt instrumental in Seconds’ win

Reed Seconds produced another scintillating performance on Saturday against Harpenden Thirds at The Green. Winning the toss, they asked the visitors to bat, both opening spells by Julien Fynn (10-1-30-2) and Charlie Walters (10-0-46-0) were tight. The first wicket fell on 42 when a superb piece of fielding from Fynn ran-out Williams for just 8 off of Walters' bowling. This brought the skipper Newton to the crease and he and opener Gilson built a solid partnership and the run rate began to increase. A short delay led to the match being reduced to 48 overs each, however the Harpenden batsmen continued on. Fynn returned and bowled Gilson for 88 and picked up the wicket of Frost for just 3 in the next over. Newton wasn't to be denied his century and he ended 110 not out and a quickfire 16 not out from Gosling took the visitors to a challenging 264 for 3 in their 48 overs. Reed started like an express train, with 19 off of the first over although Frenay fell LBW for just a single. Jack Caine and Mike Catt took the score to 47 before Caine edged the ball behind, having scored 17, a second wicket for J. Card. Kallum Ward joined Mike Catt and they continued with a run rate in excess of seven an over. Ward assumed the lead role in the partnership and he brought up his 50 off 45 balls before he became J. Card's third wicket with a 53-ball 61. 14-year-old Charlie Walters played a mature knock of 18, playing the short balls extremely well until he fell with the score on 190 in the 30th over. Mike Catt in the meanwhile had reached his fifty [...]
