3rd XI REPORT 2021

After missing out on promotion by 2 points two years ago. This time we managed to go up thanks to a four-point margin over third-placed Pinner, even though we made it difficult for ourselves at the end of the season by taking it to the very last game. The 3rds had a good season overall gaining promotion, if the weather hadn’t intervened, we might have come top instead of Bamville. Everybody contributed throughout the season and had important impacts in certain games, which was nice to see. This season did come with its difficulties in the 3’s having poor availability, but this did give me opportunities to give three Under 15s their “adult” debuts, which they did well in these games. Sometimes we did have to call on older heads to come and help us out. Unfortunately, we started the season with two rained off games to Letchworth and West Herts, with two strong teams available for these games, that we could have probably won as well. So, our first match started in our 3rd game of the season against Bamville, on a wet and cold day. That also nearly got called off. Bamville won the toss and elected to bat which seemed to be an odd decision on a wet pitch and outfield. We managed to bowl them out for 101, could have been a lot less if it wasn’t for two dropped catches. We managed to get 96-7 off 35 overs when the heavens opened, creating puddles on the pitch, though bamville still wanted to play with puddles on the pitch. We won on run rate thanks to a gritty 37 from Scott Nash and 33 from George Adam hitting the spinner for [...]

2nd XI REPORT 2021

It was great to have cricket back to some form of normality this season with the clubhouse and changing rooms open. It was a very interesting season for us in the Seconds where early on in the season I thought we had a good chance of promotion but then midway through the season I thought there was a chance of relegation as injuries and availability hit us. We eventually finished a very respectable 4th, winning 8 losing 7 and having 3 no results. Frustratingly if we hadn’t suffered injuries to key players such as Chris Jackson and Marcus Martin who we lost for over half a season I really believe we could have challenged for the second promotion position, especially as we comfortably beat West Herts in the home fixture who came 2nd by a distance. Lutonian were far too good for the division and won all 16 games they played by large margins. Although availability was a real challenge this year we did have a core group of players who I would like to mention. Matt Bowles and Julien Fynn were fantastic with the ball taking 17 and 16 wickets respectively, they both also contributed with the bat at important times. Rupert Martin and Anirudh a new player for this season both also took more than 10 wickets and were very reliable when called on. With the bat Kallum Ward was extremely consistent scoring over 350 runs. Talking of attacking batsman Mike Robertson was great for us this season too averaging over 20 and always giving the innings impetus that we required. I’d also like to thank Richard Barlow for stepping up to keep wicket a couple of times when required and doing a [...]

Life Membership for Richard Robertson

Richard Robertson was made a Life Member of Reed Cricket Club at the General Committee Meeting in November in recognition of his devoted commitment to the Club in a forty-year association. Since 1981 “Robbo” has contributed thousands of countless hours tending the pitches on The Green and also for the past decade at our second ground at Freman College. Currently, Richard is Chairman of the Herts & Beds Grounds Association and during his time at Reed CC he is or has been a Youth Team Manager, a Committee Member, a Vice-President and Trustee. Of course, Richard was a very good player back in the day too, being an important member of the successful Reed team of the late-eighties and he remained a First Eleven player well into his forties. Remembered mostly for his bowling, especially his various and often demonstrated wrist positions, once he moved down to the 2nd XI then 3rd XI Richard showed what a class batsman he was too. And the enjoyment of it all was evident. “Robbo” could “talk cricket” all night long if he desired. We at the Club have made untold savings thanks to Richard’s skill, knowledge and selfless contribution – and we do not reward him with anything like his true worth. Yet, only four years ago he was faced with a potentially life-changing operation that might have left him crippled. Thankfully for all concerned, surgery was a success and he was soon back cutting and rolling The Green. Richard is so proud of Reed’s playing honours and of the improved facilities that attract new players to our Club. He is immersed in its history and with the photographs and memorabilia on display that make it, in his [...]

Club Chairman’s Report, 2021

After getting only half a season in 2020, it was great to be able to get back to a full season of cricket this year. There were still lots of restrictions in place but heading into April there was a real sense of optimism. The 1st Team also had the excitement of a first full year in the Premier League with all the ‘Big’ sides making the trip to Reed. Whereas Covid caused games to be cancelled last year, this year it was the weather and unfortunately lots of fixtures were lost to rain, which was a real shame. We always knew playing Premier League cricket was going to be tough and with injuries and availability issues for some of our best players, it certainly turned out that way. Personally though, I really enjoyed the experience. Having players like Owais Shah play at Reed was great. Being in the Premier League meant the 1st Team players could not play in the Village Cup. So our Second team got the opportunity to play a couple of really good matches at the Green that were really well supported. We ended up losing to a very good Preston side. The stand out adult team this year was our Third team which was led extremely well by Rhodri Hughes. Some really good performances meant promotion, which was a fantastic achievement. Rhodri has now got a new job that is out of the area which is unfortunate for us, but I wish him well and hopefully he will be back for the odd match. Where we struggled for availability this year, we were able to give a lot of the younger players an opportunity in adult cricket. To see the [...]
