Life Membership for Richard Robertson

Richard Robertson was made a Life Member of Reed Cricket Club at the General Committee Meeting in November in recognition of his devoted commitment to the Club in a forty-year association. Since 1981 “Robbo” has contributed thousands of countless hours tending the pitches on The Green and also for the past decade at our second ground at Freman College. Currently, Richard is Chairman of the Herts & Beds Grounds Association and during his time at Reed CC he is or has been a Youth Team Manager, a Committee Member, a Vice-President and Trustee. Of course, Richard was a very good player back in the day too, being an important member of the successful Reed team of the late-eighties and he remained a First Eleven player well into his forties. Remembered mostly for his bowling, especially his various and often demonstrated wrist positions, once he moved down to the 2nd XI then 3rd XI Richard showed what a class batsman he was too. And the enjoyment of it all was evident. “Robbo” could “talk cricket” all night long if he desired. We at the Club have made untold savings thanks to Richard’s skill, knowledge and selfless contribution – and we do not reward him with anything like his true worth. Yet, only four years ago he was faced with a potentially life-changing operation that might have left him crippled. Thankfully for all concerned, surgery was a success and he was soon back cutting and rolling The Green. Richard is so proud of Reed’s playing honours and of the improved facilities that attract new players to our Club. He is immersed in its history and with the photographs and memorabilia on display that make it, in his [...]

Life Membership for John Heslam

John Heslam was made a Life Member of the Cricket Club at the General Committee Meeting last week. This acknowledged JQH’s massive contribution dating back to 1980. John spent 36 years on the Committee; 25 as Club Chairman. He became Club Captain in 1985 when Reed was building a competitive side that recorded numerous promotions and cup triumphs during his tenure. Latterly, he also skippered the Second XI when several Colts, whose teams he also successfully managed, were first introduced to playing “Open-Age” Cricket matches. Many of those youngsters now form the backbone of the current Senior XIs. Off the field, John was instrumental in planning the construction of extensions on our super pavilion and under his leadership and as Fundraising Officer he secured thousands of pounds in sponsorship and grants from various sources. He also procured everything from carpet tiles to fire doors, and from safes to lorry loads of concrete and building materials for those extensions, ensuring all tasks were completed on time and on-budget. This short summary of his association with the Club does not scratch the surface of JQH’s commitment to RCC and his significant influence on its history. Life Membership is in recognition of those forty years’ of service. Thank you John. Peter G. Baker. Honorary Secretary, Reed CC November 2020.

Life Memberships for Peter Lawrence and Steve Dunn

Life Membership of the Cricket Club was conferred on Peter Lawrence and Steve Dunn at the recent AGM. Peter was a founder member of the Club and has a long playing history. He has been a Club member for 63 years. Off the field in years past Peter, in his role as Chairman of Reed Parish Council, helped smooth the relationship between Club and Council, and his engineering background also made him indispensable at the time when the Club was establishing itself. Steve is a Past-President and former Club Captain, one of only two people to have held both positions. Steve was instrumental in setting-up the Colts section in the 1970s and was one of the finest wicket-keepers in the county. In latter years he had been willing to provide one-to-one wicket-keeping coaching. Steve’s friendly approach over a drink in the bar was often the first contact many prospective new playing members had with the Club, a tactic that paid off when they decided to join RCC. Both Peter's and Steve’s association continues as two of the Club’s Trustees. In recommending these Life Memberships, the Committee recognised that the Club would not be where it is now without their contributions over the years. Peter and Steve now join a very select band of Life Members comprising Clive Collins, Rosemary Collins, Keith Collins, Roger Bowcock and Andrew Emms. Peter G. Baker. Honorary Secretary, Reed CC 14th December 2019.

Life Membership for Andrew Emms

Andrew Emms was made a Life Member of Reed Cricket Club during the Sixty-second Annual General Meeting last Thursday. Andrew has worked on a variety of projects at the Club in his time as it has grown from rural village side to one of the finest clubs in Hertfordshire. He continues to volunteer and carry-out many of the manual labouring jobs that need doing as well as organising annual charity luncheons that have raised money for many worthy causes. In his early days he was particularly involved in setting-up the Colts’ structure from which the Club has benefitted with a constant supply of young players coming through to the senior teams. After many years as Committee member and Club Chairman, Andrew remains the figurehead of the Club as its President since 2012. He is a generous socialiser and a very loyal member of the Club and deserves this recognition. He now joins a very select band of Life Members comprising Clive Collins, Rosemary Collins, Keith Collins and Roger Bowcock. Peter G. Baker. Honorary Secretary, Reed CC 2nd December 2018.

Life Membership for Roger Bowcock

Roger Bowcock was made a Life Member of Reed Cricket Club during the Sixtieth Annual General Meeting last Thursday. Roger joined Reed CC in 1973 and in his 43-year association has worked tirelessly and mostly unnoticed on a variety of projects at the Club. His engineering knowledge has been tapped frequently, and he continues to carry-out many of the manual labouring jobs that need doing. Roger was the king of the late cut back in his playing days which ceased about 15 years ago. He is a familiar figure at Reed and a great supporter of the Club strolling around the boundary on match days. Roger is an astute watcher and the official selectors might be wise to listen to his considered opinions. His is normally the first-shout at the Bar and he is a popular drinking partner. Reed CC has a very select band of Life Members and I am very happy to report that Roger has now joined Howard Marshall, Clive Collins, Rosemary Collins and Keith Collins in that small group. Peter G. Baker. Honorary Secretary, Reed CC November 2016.

New Life Members

At our recent Club AGM Keith Collins retired from serving on the General Committee of Reed Cricket Club after 40 years of selfless commitment to our Club. Keith served our Club as a Player, a widely respected local Umpire, and as our Bar Manager for very many years, playing a huge role in our Clubs development. In addition, Keith’s wife Rosemary, and her late mother Kath Ford, have made the Sunday Cricket Teas at Reed a renowned feature of North Hertfordshire Cricket, and Keith and Rosemary are thankfully still committed to the Club in this regard. At the first meeting of the 2015 Reed CC General Committee, Club Chairman John Heslam proposed that both Keith and Rosemary be elected LIFE MEMBERS of Reed Cricket Club. The Committee unanimously agreed this proposal, and we are a pleased to announce that Keith and Rosemary Collins have been added to the small and very select list of Life Members of Reed Cricket Club”.
