Reed race out of the traps! U15 Cup

Our Under 15s finally got their season underway in yet another damp May evening. We travelled to Therfield for our already rearranged cup match, arriving in drizzle and dark clouds it was decided that the game would be reduced to 16 overs. As it happened the game ended up finishing with a nice sunset capping off a strange month of weather. Anyway enough about the weather, the team showed some great potential to dispatch Royston in the first round of The Cambridgeshire Youth Cricket Association Under 15 Cup. Captain Sam Osborne won the toss and elected to bat first. He and wicket-keeper for the evening, Max Sanderson, set a good early pace before Osborne fell for 12. Sanderson kept a high scoring rate on a slow and damp pitch. He was ably supported by James Mitchell, the pair combined some impressive pinch hitting with good strike rotation before both retired Sanderson on 51 and Mitchell on 11. The deluge of runs continued though and Vincent (7) and Walters (20) were both hard to set fields to as they bludgeoned some more runs. Whilst we were heavy favourites after posting 125 for 1 in 16 overs we still needed to concentrate and show control with a wet ball. What impressed onlooking parents no doubt was the boys level of concentration in the field. Harry Brent got the ball rolling with a fine diving catch off the bowling of Will Archer. Brent couldn’t follow up his catch as he shelved what appeared to be an easier chance off his own bowling. The team stuck to their guns though and continued to take wickets at regular intervals including a great direct hit at the bowlers end by Sanderson [...]

Lily does it again!

Lily Hall is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with... a silent assassin with bat and ball. Reed won the toss and chose to field first.... The opening bowling pairing of Daniel Vincent (3 overs, 0 maidens, 0 wickets, 14 runs) and Eddie Cook (3-0-0-17) had to work hard against a strong headwind and did well to keep the batsmen honest, conceding 34 runs off the first 6 overs. It was 1st change bowler, Josh Heslam (a last minute replacement for Tom Green) who demonstrated the power of a straight delivery... His low, skiddy, deliveries getting the better of the opposition - finishing 3-0-1-7. Callum Ricketts came on for a single over to stem the runs, taking the wicket of the opening batsman in the process. With St. Margaretsbury at 2 for 50 in 9 overs, the game was in danger of getting away from Reed. It was then that the silent assassin (Lily Hall) got hold of the cherry and showed the boys what girl power really was.... As has happened so often this season, Lily was underestimated by the opposition. Following in Josh's footsteps and keeping bowling simple, Lily was just unstoppable. Eddie Cook took a superb catch off Lily's second ball; and her spell (3-1-3-6) included an incredible caught/bowled and a wicket maiden... the game was back on.... 76-5 off 16. Runs dried up for the opposition after Lilly's spell and St. Margaretsbury finished on 93 for 5. Reed's bowling had improved immeasurably over the previous week and limited the opposition to less than 100 for the first time this season. So close for Reed Under 9s

Reed under 9s were at home to Hertford on Friday evening, giving debuts to Toby and Poppy. In batting first Seb and Josh got Reed off to a fast start with Seb scoring (a net) 10 and Josh 12. But wickets continued to fall in the Reed innings and with tighter bowling, Reed ended up on 284 for 7 (250 net). With very credible mentions to Harry and Jack both hitting boundaries and Rebecca getting a wicket and being involved in a run out (as she was playing for Hertford!) Wickets were hard to come by for Reed with Hertford showing some resilient defensive shots and Reed with slightly more wayward bowling than normal. Josh was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 6. Toby took a wicket with his first ball and if this form continues, it would be great to see him emulating his uncle and opening the bowling for Reed 1st team. Whilst Frankie also took a wicket. It all came down to the last 2 overs with Reed needing 2 or 3 wickets to win the game but despite 12 out of 12 balls pitching on the stumps and mostly deviating, Reed couldn't get the breakthroughs and Hertford ended up winning by 10 runs scoring 285 for 5 (260 net). So Close, Yet So Far…..

The latest match for the U13s was a lesson in concentration...... Having lost the toss and being put in the field, the normally controlled bowling let Reed down. With both opening bowlers taking wickets (D Vincent 3 overs, 0 maidens, 2 wickets, 17 runs, E Cook 3-0-3-24), at the expense of runs. With Hertford at 5 for 42, it looked like Reed were on a roll. First change bowlers slowed the run rate (T Green 3-0-0-10, C Ricketts 2-0-0-6), before the normally reliable pool of bowlers were unusually wayward - delivering excellent length at the expense of direction.... and Hertford accumulated runs without losing any wickets until the very last over, where C Ricketts returned to take 3 wickets, with 2 stumpings form D Vincent. Hertford finished with a score of 112 for 8 - a tough, but achievable, target for an inexperienced Reed team.... The Reed openers struggled with the Hertford bowling from the off.... with runs proving difficult to come by, and the fading light making batting tricky..... With wickets falling at regular intervals, the match looked beyond the colts.... But after the opening bowlers had finished their spells, The second tier bowlers helped keep the scoreboard ticking over. T Green was on the verge of providing the miracle innings Reed needed, before running himself out for 21 with Reed requiring 11 runs for victory. With M Barons and S Johnson at the crease, the atmosphere could be cut with a knife... With the two youngsters falling agonisingly short of the required runs. Progress is being made... and the 1st win of the season cant be very far away.... Match report submitted by Lee Vincent.

Under 9s get off to winning start

Reed Under 9s were playing their 1st game of the season against an older Sawbridgeworth team on Thursday evening. The Reed team was made up of 1 under 9s, 6 under 8s and an under 7. And only 3 players had played 1 game each before! But the age and inexperience did not show and they loved every minute of their first game. They were led with the bat by Grace and Rebecca scoring 10, whilst Jack scored 12 but lost 5 runs when he was unfortunately out with a direct hit run out. Seb, Josh, Grace, James J, Rebecca, Harry and Jack all scored boundaries taking Reed to a score of 301 (Net). There should also be a good mention to James D, who has massively improved with the bat since training started 2 weeks ago. But with tight bowling from all the players Reed did not give Sawbridgeworth many bad balls or as many extras. Harry, Grace and Josh all took wickets, Seb a catch and Harry a run out in restricting Sawbridgeworth to a score of 276 (Net). All the players had a smile on their face from the 1st ball to the last ball….and until the game finished they hadn’t a clue they had won by 25 runs! The Reed coach was so pleased “bearing in mind only 1 player had trained with the club in 2020, the players had only had 2 training sessions this season and cricket is not an easy game to pick up they got it straight away. The players looked comfortable batting and bowling they bowled a good line and length which is amazing as they had not even played on a cricket wicket this season [...]

Reed U13s edge ever closer….

In their second match this week, Reed yet again showed solid bowling, restricting a developing Broxbourne side to just 112 runs - with some tight bowling at the death from Callum Ricketts (3 over 0 maidens 3 wickets for 11 runs) and Aaron Nash (2-0-2-8), with some strong fielding from Sam Dawson in his first match. Reed got off to a shaky start with two of the first three batsmen going for ducks, closely followed by the remaining opener. With Reed on 15 for 5, then 47 for 7, a swift end was in sight. However, a middle order mini-revival by Josh Heslam (18 Not Out) and Oscar Lamb (9) rotating the strike and accumulating byes and wides, it looked like Reed might just salvage a victory from the jaws of defeat. It was not to be, though, as Oscar lost his wicket, closely followed by Gethin - Leaving the Heslam brothers to face that final 4 overs for the last wicket. With the finishing line in site - The final wicket fell in the 17th over. Reed edge ever closer to what must be their first victory of the season - with a little help from the Heslam Brothers. Strong Bowling Performance by Reed U13s

Reed are starting to give strong performances with the ball, with an ever-increasing ability to take wickets.... A great stride forward from last season. 2 wickets apiece from Callum Ricketts (4 overs, 0 maidens, 2 wickets for 33 runs), Daniel Vincent (4-0-2-24) and Tom Green (4-0-2-15). Eddie Cook (4-0-1-20) is showing improved consistency this season and newcomer Lily Hall (2-0-1-3) showed great skill in her first ever match. It was mainly through a particularly strong batting performance from Bishop's Stortford captain, J Frans (31 Retired) that BSCC posted a defendable total of 115 for 9. With spirits high, Reed started strongly against the opening bowlers, scoring well off the first 4 overs, before Bishop's Stortford tightened the field, runs dried up and the pressure mounted on the openers. And much like London buses, once one wicket came... they kept on coming, with no-one adding significant runs after Callum Rickets (17) and Eddie Cook (15) were dismissed attempting to recover the run rate. Reed eventually all out for 58 and out of the cup. Next up - Broxbourne in the Herts Junior League. Match report submitted by Lee Vincent.
