U15s composed against Welwyn

After two tough league games, Reed’s U15 team visited Welwyn and into the unknown. Reed won the toss and elected to bat. The opening pairing of Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge started steadily and then rapidly accelerated the run-rate after 4 tight overs. Good communication and quick singles were interspersed with plenty of boundaries. Jacob retired with a boundary bringing up 42 off 29 balls; the opening partnership having reached 79. Ollie C fell in the next over on 18. With George Wood and Ollie Tapsell new to the crease the expectation was for the run rate to stall, but it didn’t. Ollie T and Wood took the initiative and peppered the boundary. Wood finished on 21 from 16, Ollie T on 16 from 15 balls. With the innings reaching the final stages, Eddie Cook blasted 2 quick boundaries before being bowled. Daniel Vincent (1) and Jake Garner (2) seeing out the final few balls. Reed had set a defendable score of 146 for 4. In a shake-up, the ex-U13 dream team of Callum Ricketts and Daniel Vincent opened the bowling with a view to keeping the openers quiet. With Daniel’s pace variation, and Callum’s spin bamboozling the openers, the first 5 overs went for just 18 runs. Callum Ricketts struck in the 6th after Welwyn attempted to accelerate. Holding his nerve after two boundaries, Callum clean-bowled the opening batter. With Welwyn playing expansive cricket, Reed continued the seam / spin combination with Ollie Tapsell and Ollie Cambridge. Welwyn started to score quickly, but Ollie T forced an error and Eddie Cook took a clean catch to despatch Welwyn’s other opener, swiftly followed by a run-out by Jacob Vincent, with a bullet-like direct hit from [...]

The tough games keep coming for Reed U15s

When Bishop's Stortford rolled into town with multiple county players, it was always going to be tricky for the Reed U15s, especially when a depleted side were relying on support from 2 enthusiastic U13s players. Bishops Stortford won the toss and opted to bat first. In a marked improvement from the first match, the opening bowlers kept the bowling tight, and extras to a minimum. In a deliberate tactic, Reed interspersed their seam and spin bowlers - A tactic which initially worked well with Oli Cambridge dismissing batter #2 with his second ball - clean bowled. Reed continued to take regular wickets, but the strong Stortford batting line-up regularly found the boundary. Pick of the bowlers were George Wood (3-1-2-17) and Oli Cambridge (3-0-2-25), With Daniel Vincent taking one wicket, and stumping the non-striker off his own bowling with some sharp hands. Stortford finished on 150 for 6. Facing some rapid bowling, the opening pairing of Jacob Vincent and George Wood tried to weather the storm in the hope of some relief with the change bowlers. Unfortunately, George was caught on 0 and Jacob followed shortly after after some superb 'keeping had him stumped on 6. Reed never really recovered, and the bowling remained relentless for the first 10 overs. It was only after the spinners came on that Reed had the opportunity to score runs, but by then then Reed had lost 7 wickets for a score of 33. With the match lost and Callum Ricketts and Liam Neal determined to see out the overs, the innings drifted towards its conclusion. Tough start for Reed Under 15s

Reed started the season with one of the toughest opponents of the season, Broxbourne, away. Broxbourne won the toss and elected to bat. Reeds opening bowlers showed some winter rust and started haemorrhaging extras.... After 6 overs, Broxbourne were at 58 for 1, having scored just 10 off the bat. The only highlight being Liam Neal's catch off George Wood's bowling. After their opening batter was dismissed (caught Oli Tapsell, bowled O Cambridge), Broxbourne accumulated runs in the middle overs with their strongest batters at the crease. Jake Vincent bowled an impressive spell, taking 2 for 10 off 2 overs and slowing the run rate. Broxbourne finished with a flourish, with plenty of batters left in the pavilion, they could let loose, with Callum Ricketts (3-0-1-16) and Charlie Cannon (2-0-0-21) feeling the brunt of the batting. Broxbourne finished on 161 for 5, with the wayward bowling accounting for 46 of the runs. With such a tough total to chase, Reed were always feeling the pressure.... With the light fading, batting was always going to be tricky. With opening batter, Jacob Vincent reaching 36 before being dismissed, the remaining batters never looked comfortable batting in the evening gloom. A final flourish from Eddie Cook (10 from 7) earned Reed an extra bonus point, finishing 82 for 9 from the 20 overs. Going forward, Reed need to be a little more aggressive with the bat, and a little more positive with the running... Next Up, another tough opponent in Bishops Stortford 1s. Summer Frustration continues for developing U13s

In the second of four summer league matches, a developing Reed team travelled to St. Margaretsbury, who fielded a team strengthened by their district and county players. Reed won the toss and elected to bowl. SM started strongly, with boundaries in the first 2 overs, but Daniel Vincent took a liking to the Zinger stumps - sending the flashing bails flying on three occasions, finishing on 3-0-3-10. Callum Ricketts supporting with 0-11 off his first 2 overs (ending with 3-0-0-18) Gethin Hill followed with a wicket off his first ball, ending with 2-0-1-8. Eddie Cook trapping the SM batsman LBW for 0, ending 2-0-1-10.... At this point, Reed were on top, with SM on 54 for 5 off 9 overs, but the SM middle order proved resilient against the developing Reed bowlers. With Reed deciding to share the bowling among every player, SM took advantage - scoring strongly in the middle overs and putting on a 50+ partnership before Aaron Nash took the 6th wicket caught and bowled. Two superb run-outs curbed the run rate, with SM finishing on 126. A tough target with several of Reed's stronger batsmen missing from the line-up. The opening pairing of Eddie Cook and Callum Ricketts were subjected to the county-representative opening bowlers, Eddie mis-judged a ball when it kept low after 4 successive bouncers in the first over - departing without troubling the scorer.... Young Sam Dawson arrived at the crease. Up until now, Sam had faced a maximum of 13 balls in an innings and had a top score of 3 runs. Callum and Sam dug in... And while the run rate stuttered, the sight of Sam truly enjoying himself in the middle put a smile on [...]

Reed U13s suffer in the Summer heat

In the first of the Summer League matches, Reed hosted Bishops Stortford 2 in the blazing summer sun. A world apart from the start of the season, where rain threatened every match... however, the BS2 team proved as strong as ever. Reed won the toss and elected to bat, a decision largely based on the soaring temperatures. BS bowled with their usual accuracy, with opener Daniel Vincent unable to get the ball away, taking an unprecedented 11 balls to score his first run. With Lewis Abdul-Karim supporting at the other end, Reed eventually developed a partnership, with 20 runs off the first 4 overs until Lewis fell in the 6th. Tom Green joined Daniel.... but not for long, scoring a quick-fire 8 before falling in the 7th over. The match had developed into one of attrition. With runs hard to score off the bat, extras were becoming the leading scorer. Reed had (at last) learned to run byes at every opportunity. Charlie Cannon joined Daniel but retired hurt (temporarily) after being struck by a fierce delivery. Eventually returning later in the match to amass 7 runs. With the most experienced pairing of Callum Ricketts and Daniel Vincent at the crease, there was hope that the run rate would accelerate, but the BS bowling was relentless and runs were at a premium. When the opening bowlers returned, Reed had scored 36 for 2 off the first 9 overs. Callum fell on 2, quickly followed by Daniel for 7. Reed were 42-4. U13s season ends in damp squib

Reed hosted Bishop's Stortford in the last match of the Herts Junior League season knowing that only victory would secure 3rd spot in the Division. BS won the toss, put Reed into bat and were immediately rewarded when Charlie Cannon lofted the first ball to the fielder at mid-off. BS rotated the bowling among all their players, and some impressive seam bowling kept Reed struggling for runs. Having learned lessons from early in the season Reed stole singles from every opportunity. Eddie Cook was given LBW in the 5th over (3). Tom Green joined Daniel Vincent at the crease, immediately upping the urgency. Tom and Daniel put on 28 runs before Daniel fell on 20, attempting his 4th successive slog into cow corner - finding the fielder instead of the boundary. Tom was caught behind in the next over for 7. With two new batsmen at the crease (Callum Ricketts and Aaron Nash) the bowling rotation returned to the openers and a quick ball took Callum's middle stump. Callum departed on 1 and Aaron was left to hold the fort with several inexperienced players left in the pavilion. Aaron found form at just the right time; batting sensibly and seeing off the seamers, before attacking... sending two loose deliveries to the boundary. One attacking shot too many saw his middle stump dislodged. A visibly nervous Tash McNamara performed admirably, scoring 4. Oliver Tallis rejoiced avoiding a golden duck, and celebrated every one of his 5 balls - Especially the quick-run 2, and even his slog to the fielder... Hat-trick not enough to save Reed

Reed Under 13s entertained undefeated Broxbourne 1s on an overcast evening. With Broxbourne cruising at the top of the table, and Reed on a winning streak, this was looking to be an entertaining fixture. A battle between the free-flowing batting of Broxbourne, against the unpredictable bowling of Reed. Whichever way this went, Reed needed a healthy haul of points to keep in the race for 3rd place. With Broxbourne winning the toss and electing to bat, Reed's start couldn't have been better. The first choice opening bowling pairing of Daniel Vincent and Callum Ricketts stepping up to face Broxbourne batsmen who have scored freely all season. Daniel opened strongly, with just 2 runs off the first over, before Callum strolled in and bowled an over of a lifetime... Dot Dot WICKET (ct Eddie Cook) WICKET (ct Aaron Nash) WICKET (ct Eddie Cook) Single Broxbourne were reeling and Reed were on a high. Callum took the dangerous wicket of Dylan Stark in his second over - yet another close-quarters catch from Eddie Cook. Broxbourne were on 12 for 4 off 4 overs. Daniel finished his spell on a respectable 3-0-0-16, and Callum on the ludicrous 2-1-4-1, reserving an over for the death. The sheer depth of Broxbourne's batting line up quickly came to the fore, and the next three bowlers faced swift retribution... Lily Hall (1-0-0-8), Gethin Hill (3-0-0-27), Eddie Cook (3-0-0-24). Broxbourne were flying.... finishing the 13th over on 94 for 4. Tom Green entered the maelstrom and steadied the ship a little... but by this point, Broxbourne weren't taking any prisoners and the boundaries just kept coming. Tom eventually made a breakthrough in his third over, ending on 3-0-1-17, but by then the damage [...]
