Reed are going back to Lord’s !

2012 Village Cup champions Reed took on Oxfordshire outfit Aston Rowant in a relatively low scoring tie with Reed emerging victorious. Batting first, home side Reed, captained by Tom Greaves, found it difficult to score quickly on a pitch that enticed Aston Rowant’s bowlers to find the outside edge of the Reed batsmen. Will Heslam, brother of former captain James Heslam, was out cheaply for 6 to A-R opening bowler Whatman and Rob Lankester fell soon after, leaving Reed floundering on 13-2. Rebuilding up until drinks, Reed were 65-3 with most of those coming off the bat of Richard Wharton who exuded a sense of calm whilst at the crease, scoring elegantly both sides of the wicket. When left arm spinner Alexander Barras dismissed Wharton, who fell two short of his half-century, with another of his well-directed darts, the score lay at 87-4. Becoming increasingly aware that the game may be slipping away from them, the middle order came out all guns blazing, especially the Tidey brothers and captain Greaves. By the time Greaves departed on 48, he had notched five sixes and taken Reed’s score to 164, a much-needed captain’s innings. With late runs coming courtesy of Karl Ward and Jack Tidey, both scoring 11 quickly accumulated runs, Reed finished on 179-9. Despite at times struggling with Reed’s sloping pitch, Aston Rowant restricted Reed to a potentially below par score. With swathes of fans watching on, Aston Rowant openers Tim Morgan (their captain) and Alex Jewell walked to the middle after tea with the clouds rolling in. With a spring in their step after a fine end to their innings, Reed's bowlers found their rhythm almost immediately. Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey each bowled [...]

SUNDAY - (NATIONAL VILLAGE CUP SEMI-FINAL): A superb hundred-run partnership between James Heslam (55) and Sean Tidey (75) gave Reed the impetus as they went from 69 for 2 at drinks after 20 overs, to their final total of 227 for 9 after 40. Bledlow Village never really got going as Jack Tidey blew the top-order away with 5 for 21. Tom Greaves took-out the tail as the hosts were skittled for 85. The Semi-Finals of the Village Cup will be played on Sunday 6th August. Reed will be at home to Aston Rowant (Oxfordshire), who beat Ynystawe. Astwood Bank will host Sessay. SATURDAY: The Herts League programme was virtually wiped out by rain. Of a total of 129 fixtures, 21 never started; 98 were abandoned before completing the first innings; 1 match was conceded and just 7 were played to a conclusion. (At time of writing, 2110hrs, two results have not yet been submitted.) Reed's three teams started - but never finished! (It's 10 points each side for an abandoned game.) Reed Firsts bowled 26 overs away at Dunstable. Tom Greaves and Karl Ward took 1 wicket each in the host's 136 for 2. On the Green, Reed Seconds were in trouble at 86 for 8 after 35 overs. The returning Marcus Martin contributed 30 of those runs. At Shenley Cricket Centre, the Thirds tossed-up ready to play on the nursery ground. Before they started, Shenley Village's First XI match was transferred off their main ground to the nursery because the match officials decided that the outfield was drier! Nevertheless, that match was abandoned without a ball being bowled! Subsequently, Reed Thirds then began their innings on the main ground - it lasted 1 [...]

Headlines; Week ending 16th July

COLTS: The Under 13s played their Quarter-Final of the Herts Junior League Championship versus Tring Park CC on Wednesday. Reed were well away with opening pair Sam Osborne and Charlie Walters each passing 30 then having to retire. Runs did not come quite so quickly after that but Reed posted a reasonable total of 113 for 3. Tring Park, (who all looked to be at least one year older than the mainly Under 11s who make up the Reed side), started slowly, then Adam Gardner bowled one of the openers with his first delivery. But that brought the classy-looking number 3 to the crease and once he got going, runs were scored more freely. He retired at 30 as did the remaining opener, then the subsequent batsmen took the visitors to the target with no more alarms. Thursday saw a visit to Thriplow by the Under 11s.The hosts made 244 for 5 but Reed knocked-up 274 for 3 to win by 30 runs. The Under 11s undertook another trip on Saturday morning when they went to Saffron Walden. This time Reed lost by 52 runs when they managed 225 for 8 and Saffron Walden 277 for 5. SOCIAL: The Chairman's Match took place on Friday. Eventually, the teams comprised 13-a-side and played 35 overs each. Stuart Smith's XIII posted a competitive 193 for 10 thanks to thirties by Ally McKeogh and Rupert Martin, plus 26 by Robbie Hawkins and an "all-boundary" 28 from Mikey Robertson (2 sixes and 4 fours)! Former Reed Colt, Ben Ingrey took 2 for 33 down the hill in his opening spell for the Tidey Team whilst, once he had discarded the keeper's pads, Tim Tidey returned an amazing 3 for [...]

Headlines; Week ending 9th July

SATURDAY: Peter Baker had been looking forward to playing on his 248th different venue when the 4th Team were to travel to Old Haberdashers. Unfortunately, changes further up the Club impacted on player availability once more and consequently the Fourths had to concede again. Their continued participation in the League is now very doubtful. Meanwhile, on the field, the Firsts were dominant against Sawbridgeworth having their hosts all-out for 150; 4 wickets for Jack Tidey and 2 each for Sean Tidey, Tom Greaves and Toby Fynn. Then, Will Heslam (45) and Richard Wharton took Reed within touching distance of victory before being split, but Wharton continued to an unbeaten 97 when Reed won by 9 wickets. Only West Herts (256 points) and Hoddesdon (238) are above Reed (232) in the Championship Division. On the Green, an exciting run-chase ended in a 6-wicket win for Reed Seconds when Mike Robertson (24 not out) and Ed Garrott (17 not out) saw them home against Northwood Town. The visitors had declared on 250 for 7 in their innings, the wickets falling to Karl Ward (3), Garrott and Matt Bowles, (2 each). Reed cantered to the target thanks to contributions from Rich Barlow (37), Phil Frenay (38), Mike Catt (65) and Richard Johnson (67). The Seconds are in 4th place in Division 4B, 33 points behind table-toppers Hoddesdon who have 256 points. On another field, this time on the Freman Oval, West Herts had no trouble chasing-down the Third's total of 151. Mostly, those runs came courtesy of Ben Moody, (42), Marcus Baker, (32), Paul Garrott, (23) and Tom Nussey, (22), but Reed's only joy in West Herts' innings were the 2 wickets by Joe Graves. Reed have slipped [...]

Headlines; Week ending 25th June

COLTS: The Under 13s continued their undefeated run in the Herts Junior League by beating Welwyn Garden City on the Green on Tuesday. The visitors scored 78 for the loss of 7 wickets in their 20 overs. There was 1 wicket each for William Green and Adam Gardner, 2 for 15 for Charlie Walters and 3 for 6 by Sam Osborne. Osborne (31 not out) and Ross Gardner (14 not out) were at the wicket when the winning runs came to secure the U13s' position at the top of the Division. The Under 11s also had a good win against near neighbours, Cokenach. Reed set a net score of 279 for 6 with Charlie Walters hitting 33 not out. Cokenach came close with 271 for 5, wickets falling economically to Jacob Vincent, Adam Gardner and Charlie Walters but Reed won by 8 runs. SATURDAY: Starring with the bat for the 1st XI were William Heslam, Rob Lankester and Tom Greaves who all scored half-centuries in Reed's 274 for 9, then Ed Wharton took 5 wickets when Flitwick capitulated to 122 all out. This places Reed in 2nd position in the Championship Division. Richard Johnson's fifty and Ed Garrott's 41 were in vain in the Second's run chase at home against Chorleywood. The visitors made 226 for 9 with 4 wickets to Karl Ward and 3 to Marcus Martin, but Reed could gather only 180 in reply. The Seconds are 5th in Division 4B. With another successful run-chase, this time away at Hemel Hempstead, the Thirds are 2nd in Division 9A. Sam Rice spun his way to 3 wickets and Steve Hughes notched-up 4 in the host's 222 all out but scores in the sixties by [...]

Teeboon fireworks do for Hertford

Reed 2nds came back from their trip to Hertford 3rds this weekend with an emphatic victory. Stand-in skipper Ward had little hesitation in electing to bat in the hot Hertfordshire sun. Bowles (30) and Johnson (57) got Reed off to an excellent start as they carefully negotiated the new ball. The pair put on 83 for the first wicket before Bowles picked out the man on the long on boundary. Johnson was joined by Ed Garrott (17) and soon passed fifty in typically elegant fashion before a mix up left Johnson run out. Garrott then fell having looked set and Reed were in danger of losing their impetus. Enter George Teeboon (78) who plundered the Hertford change bowlers all over Balls Park, ably supported by the in form George Garrott (31). The pair took the score from 123-3 in the 31st over to 220 in the 42nd over when Garrott was out caught. Teeboon fell soon after, caught & bowled, but the damage was done by this point. There was still time for Ward (28) to play a cameo role with the bat as Reed got to 274-9 declared off of 49 Overs. With 51 overs to chase Reed's total, the last thing the hosts needed were early wickets. However, Joe Graves (10-2-28-3) struck in only the 3rd over thanks to a sharp catch by keeper Tim Tidey. A calamitous run out soon followed before Ed Garrott took a spectacular catch at gulley off of Graves to leave Hertford 31-3. Ward (6-1-20-2) and the returning Julien Fynn struck (8.4-1-29-2) thanks to some great catching by Rob Willoughby. Matt Bowles (7-1-29-1) and George Garrott (4-1-15-1) also got in on the action. A few spurned chances from [...]

Life Membership for Roger Bowcock

Roger Bowcock was made a Life Member of Reed Cricket Club during the Sixtieth Annual General Meeting last Thursday. Roger joined Reed CC in 1973 and in his 43-year association has worked tirelessly and mostly unnoticed on a variety of projects at the Club. His engineering knowledge has been tapped frequently, and he continues to carry-out many of the manual labouring jobs that need doing. Roger was the king of the late cut back in his playing days which ceased about 15 years ago. He is a familiar figure at Reed and a great supporter of the Club strolling around the boundary on match days. Roger is an astute watcher and the official selectors might be wise to listen to his considered opinions. His is normally the first-shout at the Bar and he is a popular drinking partner. Reed CC has a very select band of Life Members and I am very happy to report that Roger has now joined Howard Marshall, Clive Collins, Rosemary Collins and Keith Collins in that small group. Peter G. Baker. Honorary Secretary, Reed CC November 2016.

Thank you from Reed Parochial Church Council

Extract from a letter of thanks sent to Andrew Emms, President, Reed CC dated 1st August, 2016. Dear Andrew, I am writing on behalf of the Reed Parochial Church Council. We are very grateful to you and the Cricket Club for producing such a wonderful floral window display for our Flower Festival. Thank you so much for all your hard work. We have had some wonderful comments about the whole weekend and we hope you enjoyed it too. The window displays were all so individual and really told a story about each organisation. It was great to see all our organisations represented so imaginatively and all in one place! I’m also delighted to be able to report that we have raised over £1,000 for our church, so a massive thank you to everyone in the Cricket Club and their families and friends for supporting this special weekend. With best wishes Jenny Wisdom

Double joy as the Fynns Win at President’s Day

Brothers, Julien and Toby Fynn, celebrated success in the Reed CC 2016 President's Day Double-Wicket Competition held on Sunday 31st July. Having won their respective pools of round-robin matches, the Fynns met William Heslam and Ollie Benham in the Final. Each pair of batsmen started with 100 runs and faced 4 overs, 2 each bowled by their opponents. Dismissals attracted penalty runs so it proved costly when Will & Ollie, who batted first, lost wickets. They achieved a Net Total of 123. Although the Fynns surpassed that total during the last over, they then had to negotiate the remaining deliveries without being dismissed to be sure of the win. Julien duly blocked-out and victory was theirs. President Andrew Emms made the presentation to the winners then thanked those who had organised the event and helped throughout the day. The crowd had been witness to some audacious batting shots, big-hitting, tight bowling and athletic catching and fielding.

Sean took Reed over the line in a game that seemed to be slipping away

Reed edged a tight game against Dunstable by 3 wickets as the match see-sawed backwards and forwards. Dunstable were 131-3 with Essex 2nd XI player Ali (26) and Guy Hill (63) leading the charge, but new skipper, Tom Greaves (8-2-26-5) took 5 wickets for 7 runs and with Alex Mutucumarana taking the last two, they were all out for 143. Reed built their innings steadily with Chris Jackson top scoring on 33, but they too suffered a collapse from 106-3 to 117-7 until Sean Tidey's lusty knock of 20 from 17 balls, supported by Ed Wharton saw them home with 10 overs to spare. Report by Peter Wholley.
