Reed 1sts meet their match in Nissen

Reed were blown away by Australian-born paceman, Kris Nissen, who finished with figures of 17-8-33-6. However even these did not reflect his dominance as 4 of his victims were clean bowled by fast swinging yorkers. Only 3 Reed batsmen reached double figures with Zac McGuigan and Tom Greaves top scoring with 20 apiece. As a result the hosts managed just 106 in 37 overs. All this was in contrast to the start of the match when Ed Wharton (1 for 8) and Jack Tidey (2 for 6) reduced Shenley Village to 5 for 3 on a rain affected wicket. Yet it was Nissen again who thwarted the bowlers scoring a stylish 44 in spite of the conditions. Tom Greaves kept chipping away though, taking 4 for 58 and their opponents struggled to 138 for 9 from their 60 overs, but it proved to be plenty in the end. Reed therefore surrendered their unbeaten record this season, as well as second place in the league to their opponents. Match Report submitted but Peter Wholley.

Wharton hammers Hemel.

The First XI game was dominated by two batsmen who both narrowly missed out on scoring a century. For Hemel Hamish Llangaratne carried his bat for a classy 95, but sadly ran out of partners with two overs remaining. Reed's Ed Wharton, in contrast, bludgeoned the visitors' attack for a brutal 91 from 80 balls, including 8 fours and 5 sixes. Hemel struggled against accurate home bowling with Jack Tidey (6-2-8-2) striking early and Toby Fynn (2-38) accounting for Australian Jack Bailey to break the crucial partnership. Once again, Reed's spinners tied down the middle order taking 4-53 between them from 18 overs, ably aided by 3 catches calmly pouched in the deep by Zac McGuigan, who also added a run out and a wicket to his tally. 162 did not look a defensible total, especially when McGuigan and Ed Wharton plundered 70 from the power play. Although Mcguigan was unluckily run out for 24 for the second week running - the bowler deflecting a drive onto his wicket when he was backing up, Wharton continued his barrage. When he was finally bowled, only 17 were needed for victory and Reed romped home with 6 wickets and 20 overs to spare. A very convincing performance. Match report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Gibbo is the “Matt of the Match”!

Reed Sunday XI versus Antigua Cavaliers CC at Reed on Sunday 17th June 2018. Reed batted first with players from across the range of abilities representing the club in this friendly against Antigua Cavaliers who hail all the way from Walthamstow! William Heslam (14) and Matt Bowles (19) put-on 37 in good time with no particular alarms but when both of them plus Sean Tidey, Andy Brown and Ben Mansfield went close together Reed were approaching the halfway stage at 68 for 5. Young Tom Nussey looked good supporting James “Sandy” Sandford until he was run-out for 14 by which time the score had progressed to 105 for 6. “Sandy” compiled an assured 64 before he became one of Irfan’s 3 wickets but more wickets soon fell cheaply and it was clear that Reed would not reach a defendable total unless something was done about it. Matt Giblin was joined at the crease by Jack Tidey then from 149 for 9 the pair inflated the score to 213 for 9 in an unbroken partnership of 64. Giblin made 18 whilst “Big Jack’s” 43 contained 9 fours. The Cavaliers did not mess about after tea as Bubash (40) and H Lee (16) knocked-off fifty of the arrears in only 7 overs, but once they had departed to athletically taken catches by keeper MJE Baker and Jack Tidey in the slips off Giblin’s bowling, the successive incoming batsmen were not so free-scoring. There were still some big hits to, and over, the boundary but they were less frequent. William Heslam claimed 2 wickets for 28 and Ben Mansfield and Tom Nussey 1 each, but the stand-out bowler was Matt Giblin who rounded-off a good day by taking [...]

Headlines; Week Ending 10th June

SOCIAL. The Garrotts & co posing as "Not all legless" won the quiz on Friday. Well done them! And thanks to Quizmaster Matt Bowles. COLTS. The Under 11s beat Cokenach on Tuesday. Extras made large contributions to both sides' totals but Reed ended-up with 251 (net) and Cokenach (246 (net). Thomas Green took 2 wickets and Jacob Vincent, Matthew Barons and Oliver Tallis 1 each. On Thursday, the Under 13s saw action against Saffron Walden but managed only 56 for 4 in reply to S-W's 108 for 8. Wickets fell to Sam Osborne (2), Matthew Liebenberg (2), Adam Gardner (1), William McIntosh (1) and Archie McIntosh (1). In Reed's batting line-up, Sam Osborne retired after reaching 31. SATURDAY. (SHPCL). Matt Sampson top-scored with 92 for the Firsts away at Luton Town & Indians in the first match in the "timed" format. Reed batted for 60 overs amassing 246 for 7, James Heslam and Ed Wharton also recorded half-centuries. Karl Ward then took a five-for as LT&I responded with 205 for 9 and held out for a draw in the "June gloom". The two Richards (Barlow and Johnson) put together a century opening partnership on the Green as the Seconds easily stroked their way to 293 for 4. "Jonno" was run-out for 50 but "Barley" went all the way to 133 and Jack Caine also scored 43 down the order. Acting skipper, Ed Garrott, led the bowling attack taking 3 of Baldock's wickets but there were also 2 wickets each for Matt Giblin, Owen Hughes and Kieren McKinna and 1 for Maseeh Naeem. What’s the Point?

For those of you who are interested in following the Reed CC teams in their various Divisions and keep a watch on the League Tables perhaps from afar (or even spectating “live”) you might find the Points scoring system confusing. I have reproduced below the methods for awarding points. Needless to state that it isn’t as straightforward as you might think because the system in the Premier and Championship Divisions (i.e., affecting our First XI), is different to the system used in Divisions 1 to 10B (affecting our Second and Third Teams). It is different again in the Regional Divisions, but as we are not running a Fourth XI this season, I have excluded that system. For our 1st XI Limited Overs Matches (50 overs per side): Points System Win: 25 points Tie: 13 points No result: 10 points, or bonus points gained, whichever is the greater. Cancelled: 10 points Bonus points awarded to the losing side or, in the event of a match without a result, to both sides. No bonus points will be awarded for a match ending as a Tie (a Tie being a match in which the scores are level, irrespective of the number of wickets lost by each side). Batting Bonus points: 1 point for reaching 125, 150, 175, 200, 225, 250 and 275 runs Bowling Bonus points: 1 point for taking 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 wickets (Full bowling bonus points will be gained if a side is all out, regardless of the number of wickets taken). By winning a full match, the victorious team receives 25 points only, (no Batting or Bowling Bonus Points). Only the losing team gets Bonus Points which means that a losing [...]

Howard Marshall Pavilion, Sunday 6th May 2018

As we approach the beginning of another cricket season, a date for you to note is Sunday 6th May. That is when Reed Cricket Club officially names its Clubhouse the Howard Marshall Pavilion. During the afternoon, a Reed XI will play a match versus a Howard Marshall XI starting at 1400hrs followed by a short naming ceremony at approximately 1830hrs. There will be a Hog Roast afterwards. We would like to see as many past & present members, their families and friends as possible during the day. Please keep the date free. We passed the 40th anniversary of the original opening of the Clubhouse last year. Although in use prior to the official opening, Reed played an Invitational XI made up of cricketers from cricket clubs in the Royston and surrounding district. The match was played on the 5th June 1977 and the "cutting of the ribbon" ceremony was performed by Mrs Joy Reffell. She was the wife of Norman Reffell, a prominent member of the Club. The photographs show the combined teams and along with the history of the construction of the Clubhouse these are displayed inside the lounge area. Images of the relevant pages form the scorebook are also attached. I appreciate they may be faded because they are written in pencil but here is a brief summary. It was an All-Day match. Fred Flack (9) and David Ford (6) opened the batting. John Raven top-scored with 33 and Peter King made 11. Neville Bird at number 5 scored 12 followed by useful contributions of 26 by Steve Dunn and 24 by Clive Collins. Number 8 was Peter Lawrence who was out for 4 then Howard Marshall hit 3 boundaries in his 19. [...]

Howard Marshall, 1935 to 2017. RIP.

Dear Members and Friends of Reed Cricket Club, We have received the sad news today that our former Club President and long-serving committee member, Howard Marshall, died this morning aged 82. Howard had been in poor health for some months but was cheered last weekend when he learned of Reed’s victory in the National Village Cup Final at Lord’s. Attached is a photograph of a proud Howard holding the Village Cup in 2012 when Reed won it for the first time. It is a wonderful photograph capturing a joyful Howard as many of us will remember him. I am sure you will join with me to send our sympathies to Howard’s children, Justin and Belinda. When I have any further news to announce I shall let you know.
