Sanderson fifty not enough as Reed bow out of the National Village Cup

Reed travelled to Redbourn in the Regional Final of the National Village Cup after the game had to be rearranged due to Reed's ground being unavailable. Winning the toss, Redbourn elected to bat, they set off quickly until Jack Tidey (8-1-28-1) bowled Ed Hales for 5 with the score on 20, his brother Will fell for 28 to Toby Fynn (8-2-27-1), Fynn coming back well after his first three overs went for 22. Yorath and Cutler set about building an innings defining partnership of 146. Both fell in consecutive overs to skipper Rob Lankester (5-0-30-1) and Will Heslam (8-0-52-3). The remaining batters took Redbourn to a competitive total of 235 for 6 off their 40 overs. Will Heslam and Kallum Ward set off well in reply until Ward was caught for 10, a superb run out dismissed Sam Osborne for just 3 and when Heslam mistimed a slow ball to be caught for 16 and Reed were wobbling at 45 for 3. 17-year-old Max Sanderson came to the wicket to join Skipper Lankester and the two set about rebuilding the innings with some powerful hitting and good running between the wickets. Their partnership had reached 61, when Lankester was adjudged LBW for 33. Despite wickets falling around him Sanderson reached his well deserved fifty off 70 balls, he was the ninth wicket to fall for 52, despite a 25 run stand for the last wicket between Fynn and Giblin, Reed were all out for 175 losing by a 60 run margin. U15s Difficulties Continue

With the U15s squad hampered by long-term injuries, the journey to Hertford was very much an unknown entity. A re-scheduled match from earlier in the season, U15s could only muster 10 players for the half-term fixture - with two of these new additions to the team. Reed won the toss and elected to bat. Daniel Vincent and Oscar Lamb opened the batting against rapid pace. With Daniel seeing off the majority of the seam deliveries, Oscar fell to a quality catch for a duck, followed quickly by Daniel after being deceived by a spinning delivery. Reed were 5 for 2 in the 4th over. Unfortunately, Reed never really got started, and it was the wayward deliveries from Hertford which brought respectability to the score-line. Stanley Johnson (8) Charlie Cannon (8), Aaron Nash (6), Oliver Tallis (10), Luke Parker (7), Lily Hall (5) hauled the score to 96 for 8 at the end of 20 overs. Sub-100 scores are always going to be difficult to defend, so Reed were dependant on getting early wickets. Crack-bowler Lily Hall opened the bowling and was extremely close to taking a wicket with the first ball.... But after a number of near-misses, Lily finished on 3-0-23-0. Luke Parker, Charlie Cannon and Stanley Johnson were equally unlucky - and with a missing fielder, runs (and boundaries) were in plentiful supply for the Hertford openers. With both opening batsmen approaching forced-retirement on 40, it was new-player Vicky Stevenson who forced a mistake, taking a wicket with her first over of bowling. Walters and Archer are bright spots in Reed Seconds’ defeat

Reed Seconds welcomed Tewin Firsts to Cokenach last Saturday. Winning the toss Skipper Stuart Smith opted to bat first. Smith was the first wicket to fall run out for only one, the first of three run outs in the Reed innings. After Phil Frenay's dismissal at 23 for 2 brought 16-year-old Charlie Walters to the wicket and he hit his first delivery for four. Wickets fell intermittently but a 50 run partnership for the fifth wicket with Rich Barlow gave the team some home of posting a respectable score. Walters fell for a 75 ball 64, which included 9 fours and 2 sixes. Unfortunately the remaining batting fell away due to some tight bowling and great ground fielding from Tewin. At 165 for 8 off the maximum 50 overs, it felt that this was maybe 30 runs short on this particular batting wicket. Tewin put matters in perspective as they set off quickly in pursuit of their target. Phil Frenay took a catch of the bowling of Matt Bowles (10-0-44-1) and that checked the batting. 17-year-old Will Archer bowled with good drift and turn off the pitch and was unlucky not to take any wickets. Though the run rate was reduced significantly Reed couldn't find any further wickets as Tewin eventually reached their target inside 37 overs. Match Report submitted by Neil Haslam.

Catches WIN matches!

They say catches win matches, so if you drop 10, the result is almost certainly inevitable. Dunstable profited to the tune of 266 for 6 with Aussie Billington top scoring with 80. Only Chris Chambers managed to put a brake on their run charge taking 3 for 10 in his first 5 overs. He also had Billington with the last ball of his tenth over and eventually ended with 4 for 42. Reed stuttered to 47 for 5 in reply, four of those wickets falling to their perennial scourge Luke Cherry. However, when he finished his allocated overs, the lower order fought back led by a stylish innings of 38 by Max Sanderson and a more brutal one of 54 by Sean Tidey. They put together a stand of 77 and with the last wicket of Toby Fynn and Matt Giblin adding 24 more, Reed at least had the consolation of 3 batting bonus points. Reed U15s need to rebuild after injuries

After a bruising encounter at Ickleford in the T20 cup, Reed were without 3 experienced players for their league match against Welwyn Garden City. With Callum (Broken Toe), Jamie (Knee) and Daniel (Back) unavailable to bowl, the next few weeks are going to be tough for the U15s players. Fortunately, Daniel is still able to take the field to bat, and his experience in the field will help the younger players coming through. Welwyn won the toss and elected to field. A completely new opening pairing of Daniel and Eddie saw off the opening bowlers and reached 29 for 0 from 6 overs (with WGC opening bowler Vinnakota going for just 3 runs from his 2 overs) before Eddie was caught on 5 from 22 balls. In an error from the umpires, the batters crossing was not reversed, and Daniel was bowled by a ball that died in the wicket next ball (13 from 18). Then a quickfire 5 from 3 from Charlie Cannon before being caught in the next over. Reed were in trouble. When Stanley Johnson was caught in the next (9th) over it was up to Lewis Karim and Sam Dawson to make a stand if Reed were to post a defendable score. A partnership of 31 runs came to an end when Karim (30 from 24) was caught. Sam continued to show composure in the middle, while a succession of partners were dismissed at the other end. Ward and Lankester onslaught down Langleybury

Reed travelled to Langleybury in the Regional Semi-Final of the National Village Cup on Sunday. Winning the toss skipper Rob Lankester asked the hosts to bat. Tight bowling from both Toby Fynn (8-1-18-2) and Jack Tidey (8-0-25-2) were well rewarded as Langleybury were wobbling at 29 for 4. A brief respite came with a fifth wicket stand of 46 between Roe and Ross before a smart caught and bowled by Chris Chambers (8-0-42-2) ended Ross's knock. Reed's changed bowlers of Chambers, Julien Fynn (8-1-31-1) and Sean Tidey (8-0-31-1 ) backed up the opening bowling spells as they restricted the hosts to 160 for 9 off 40 overs. Roe top scoring with a truculent 58. With only a shade over four runs an over needed, Reed set off confidently with Will Heslam and Kallum Ward building a partnership quickly. Heslam fell for 11 (32-1) brought 17 year old Sam Osborne to the crease he was given lbw for 5 and Reed were then 48-2 in the 13th over. Rob Lankester joined Ward at the crease and the pair played near faultless cricket at they motored towards their target. Ward hit 7 fours and 2 sixes in his 75-ball 69 not out and skipper Lankester 3 fours and four sixes in a 45-ball 50 not out, their unbeaten 115 run partnership off a mere 88 balls. Lankester hit the winning runs with a six over the club house to secure an 8 wicket victory and a date away with Redbourn in the Regional Final on 4th June. Match Report submitted by Neil Haslam.

A slippery start to the season

After two weeks of washed-out fixtures, Reed 1st XI looked set for a heavy defeat in their first game of the season as they slumped to 121 all out. They lost two wickets in the first two overs, although a solid partnership between skipper, Rob Lankester, and Sam Osborne (13) established a base to the innings. However when Lankester was LBW to slow left arm, Zimbabwean Connor Mitchell for 46 only Sean Tidey and Toby Fynn reached double figures as Reed lost their last 6 wickets for 31 runs. The signs were ominous when Jamie Regan took 17 from Jack Tidey's first over for 2 years, but Jack soon found his length and ripped out the visitor's top order taking 4 for 33 from his 10 overs, 3 of his victims clean bowled. He has been sorely missed. A wicket apiece for Sam Osborne and Toby Fynn as well as a direct hit run out from Mike Robertson in the covers had St Albans stuttering at 102 for 7, but their eighth wicket ground out the winning runs despite the best efforts of the Reed attack. U15s first match ends in inury

After a much-delayed start top the season for the U15s, Reed travelled to Ickleford for a cup match. Ickleford won the toss and elected to Bat. The Reed opening bowlers of Jamie Coote and Callum Ricketts started superbly, limiting Ickleford to just 7 runs from the first 4 overs. An intelligent throw from Daniel Vincent at long-on to the keeper led to a run-out on the last ball of the 4th over. The next bowling pairing of Daniel Vincent and Lily Hall kept up the pressure, with both taking wickets in their first overs; and Daniel adding another in his second over. A recurrence of a back injury meant Daniel had to stop bowling with 2 wickets for 3 runs (2-1-2-3). After 7 overs, Ickleford has struggled to 16 runs, having lost 4 wickets and Reed were strongly on top. Ickleford needed to up the pressure and went on the attack - Lily took the brunt in her 2nd over, finishing on 2-0-1-19 Lewis Karim put the pressure back on with a tidy opening over going for just 2 runs. Eddie Cooke kept the pressure on with his 1st over, taking a wicket (caught Lewis) After 10 overs, Ickleford were 38 for 5. In an innings that can only be described as having two halves, Ickleford (and in particular their No.5 batsman Pereth) went on the attack against Reed's supporting bowlers. With Pereth retiring on 40 runs, the 6th wicket stand reached 58 runs. Jamie Coote striking twice in the 16th over (his 3rd) ending on 3-0-2-8. Firsts’ season fizzles out

After last week's euphoria on staying up, the final match of the season was rather anticlimactic. The visitors, Shenley Village, had to win to ensure a place in the play-off for promotion, so they had the motivation to play well. As indeed they did triumphing by 8 wickets. Reed started very well, the partnership of 60 between Will Heslam (23) and Kallum Ward (30) was only bettered twice in the league, but when all ten wickets fell for another 66 runs, it turned out to be the second lowest total this season. The rest of the strong batting side all registered single figures, except for the ever reliable Rob Lankester who batted throughout the carnage for an undefeated 31. This gave him almost 500 runs this year at an average of 41 and it would surely have been many more without the month he missed with a broken thumb. All the Shenley bowlers gave a good account of themselves, although Fakim Akbar (5-29) proved particularly difficult to read. Northants' Charles Thurston set about the reply with gusto, his 54 containing 10 boundaries. Even Reed's two most successful bowlers: Toby Fynn (34 wickets) and Tom Greaves (35) couldn't contain him as Shenley scored 130 for 2 in just 25 overs. Toby would like it reported that his average was marginally below 20, whereas Tom's was marginally above! Overall Reed's supporters can be relieved that the team found some good form in the latter stages of the season, finishing halfway down the league in sixth place. Reed breeze past Broxbourne

For once, Reed Firsts had a comfortable win against a Broxbourne side that had trounced them on The Green earlier this season. Having won the toss, Skipper, Tom Greaves, made what in retrospect was a good decision to insert the opposition. His bowlers all came up to the mark by taking wickets at regular intervals. Toby Fynn and Zac McGuigan opened in their usual miserly fashion, both chipping in with a wicket caught behind by Sean Tidey. The real breakthrough, however, was made by Chris Chambers who clean bowled George Davies and captain, Chris Sargent, with consecutive balls. Davies was the chief architect of Reed's downfall in that aforementioned match, scoring 143. This left Broxbourne on 76 for 5 at the halfway mark. Thereafter the spinners took over with Greaves taking 2-30 and Bertie Scott claiming 4-12 from just 6 overs, including the wicket of top scorer Connor Ridley, well caught on the fence by Will Heslam. Broxbourne 152 all out. With such a strong batting line up, this looked like a walk in the park for Reed and so it proved despite losing two early wickets. Sam Osborne (43) and Rob Lankester then built a century partnership, playing carefully at first then accelerating against the four spinners. They hit 13 boundaries between them and Lankester added two maximums, one of them over the sight screen to end the match with just four wickets down. He was justifiably named man of the match for his 77 not out. With that win, Reed have ensured they will play in the Championship again next year, but first they entertain Shenley Village on The Green next week with the visitors needing to win to secure a play off [...]
