Archer makes mincemeat of Braughing

Whilst Braughing is known locally for their sausages, our stand-in captain Will Archer made mincemeat of their middle order to finish with figures of 5 for 18 in an Under 15 development friendly on Thursday (17th). His evening started pretty well winning the toss and electing to bat. Dom Longland and Oli Tapsell struck the new ball well and ran between the wickets athletically. We also gave debuts to Bear Coates and Matt Ladds, the latter second top scored with 13 striking a couple of lovely fours. Will Green followed suit by bludgeoning 18 crucial runs too. Coates also capped a winning debut with a fine catch in the deep later on. We didn’t give ourselves a great deal of room for comfort though with a relatively slim total of 86. Needless to say we defended it well with a couple of neat stumpings by stand-in keeper Dan Vincent. His brother Jacob Vincent also showed good control with his bowling. He and James Mitchell both contributed well with figures of 3 for 7 and 1 for 1! Dom Longland also struck early and finished with 2 for 15. Ultimately it was our spin bowlers who wrapped up the result though with sizzling accuracy. Oli Cambridge sent down two maiden overs with Jacob and James above setting Will Archer up for his timely batch of wickets. We restricted Braughing to skinny 57 to win by 29 runs. Thriplow is well known for its daffodils let’s hope we are shining brightly against them this coming week. We have them at Reed on the 24th then Away on the 25th. U13s do it again!

You wait two seasons for a victory, then they keep coming like London buses. The developing players in the U13s squad demonstrate what is possible with a little hard work (and a lot of fielding practice). This friendly match-up was designed to give the developing players on both sides match experience - and both sides gave good account. Highlight of the evening was Scarlett Blaney's hat-trick on debut.... and I'm not sure that Scarlett has stopped smiling yet. To the delight of everyone, both Thriplow and Reed fielded mix-sex teams, showing just how popular the ladies game is becoming. Thriplow won the toss and opted to Bat. With bowling being shared equally among every player (except Wicket Keeper, Daniel Vincent), everyone had a job to do. The bowling was kept fairly tight ... and the fielding even tighter. With only 8 boundaries conceded and Thriplow restricted to running singles, the opposition were restricted to 104 runs for 6 wickets. Pick of the bowlers was debutant Scarlett Blaney (2-0-3-7), ably supported by (among others) Gethin Hill (2-0-1-8), Matthew Barons (2-0-0-6), Effie Bone (2-0-0-10) and Charlie Ward (2-0-0-10) The inexperienced batting line-up, was supported by Daniel Vincent at #1 and the dependable duo of Callum Ricketts at #10 and Oscar Lamb at #11 to bring them home. After strict instruction to score singles and keep off strike - Daniel declared his first 2 boundaries were "accidents", but quickly settled down with his young cousin, Tash McNamara, to build an opening partnership of 55 in 8 overs. Daniel retired on 24, and Tash after achieving 20. The plan was to allow everyone maximum opportunities to bat... and all time at the crease - however brief - is valuable [...]

Captain’s Ton not enough

Reed III travelled to Holtwhites Trinibis 3rds on a small ground and a flat track. Reed skipper Rhodri Hughes won the toss and decided to bowl first looking to chase. The skipper might have looked to regret that decision when Holtwhites got off to a fast start, taking a liking to Owen Hughes (9-0-63-1). However, Joe Graves (9-1-35-2) picked up both openers. Holtwhites then started to build another partnership with Prince and Turner batting nicely punishing the bad ball. Greg Mckinnel (9-0-65-1) then picked up Turner. Holtwhites kept building partnerships, however, Will Archer (8.2-1-37-3) bowled nicely picking up 3 well deserved wickets. Skipper Rhodri Hughes (6-0-38-2) chipped in with a couple of wickets. Reed managed to bowl out Holtwhites for 274 in 41.2 overs, with R.Watson making the tail wag a bit for a well-played 47. The score looked gettable on a small ground and a fast outfield. Reed did not start off well losing Paul Garrott, Kieren Willoughby and Marcus Baker early leaving Reed 26 for 3 after 7 overs. However, skipper Rhodri Hughes came in with Rob Willoughby and started to build a partnership, running hard between the wickets and punishing the bad ball taking the score to 128-3 at drinks, putting Reed in a position to look like they could chase down the score. Rob and Rhodri continued in similar fashion, until Rob was stumped for an excellent 68, with the pair putting on 147 for the 4th wicket. Owen Hughes joined his brother and looked to build another partnership, they kept running between the wickets well and punishing the bad ball. Archers on target against Pinner

Reed III faced Pinner at the Freman Oval. Pinner won the toss and elected to bowl first on which looked a tricky wicket for batsmen due to the rain the day before. Richard Barlow and Paul Garrott opened the batting for Reed and tried to blunt the new ball attack of Pinner on a difficult wicket to start. However, the excellent bowling of Carter (9-3-28-2) got Richard Barlow out early and Paul Garrott soon followed for 14. Leaving Reed 19 for 2, Rob Willoughby and Marcus Baker started building a partnership taking the score to 55 until Marcus was out caught at point for 22. This brought Mike Robertson to the crease that started to build a partnership with Rob Willoughby with both punishing the bad ball of the spinners. They put on 51 before Rob Willoughby was bowled for a well played 40. This brought Skipper Rhodri Hughes to the crease that decided to up the tempo with Mike Robertson, running well and some big hits from Robertson. They put on 46 in 5 overs until Rhodri was bowled for 13, taking the score to 152-5 off 35. Mike Robertson then followed in the next over for an excellent 60. Reed then collapsed losing wickets cheaply leaving then 171-9 with 6 overs to bat. However, Joe Graves and Jason Archer built a solid unbroken partnership of 34 for the last wicket, punishing the bad bowl, taking Reed to 205-9 off 45. Victory – At Last!

After 2 barren years, the U13s recorded their first league victory against top-of-the-table Broxbourne 2s in a closely fought match that went down to the wire. Broxbourne won the toss and elected to put Reed into bat - A decision which appeared to be paying off as Reed struggled to accumulate runs against tight bowling. Opener Eddie Cooke was bowled cheaply (1), bringing newcomer Lewis Abdul-Karim to the crease in the 5th over with Reed on 12 runs. Lewis's years perfecting his golf swing proved useful in the middle as he found the boundary twice before being run out to a direct hit from deep on 9 runs. Reed were 47 for 2 in the 10th over. Tom Green came to the crease knowing that the run rate needed to improve if Reed were going to post a defendable total - which he duly did until opener Callum Rickets was bowled on 13. The dynamic partnership of Tom Green and Daniel Vincent rarely disappoints and the run rate accelerated again with quick-witted running between the wickets and continuous strike rotation Reed raced past 100 runs before Tom shipped a catch to a fielder.... departing agonisingly close to retirement on 29; closely followed by Daniel (18) - who found a fielder whilst trying to clear the boundary in the 19th over. Aaron Nash added a quick-fire 5 in 4 balls - partnered by Lily Hall (bowled - 0) and Tash McNamara (0) who closed out the innings. Reed posted a respectable 124 Reeds bowling needed to be composed and tight - Which is was... The tail wags, but still Mymms win

After a solid opening partnership of 43 between Ed Wharton (19) and Will Heslam (28), the Firsts seemed to be slipping to their customary collapse at 100 for 6, with Sri Lankan spinner, Ruwarisiri bagging 5 scalps. However this time the lower order stood up to be counted. Kallum Ward started the momentum with an aggressive 23, followed by some determined stroke play from Sean Tidey (26) and top scorer, Jack Caine (37). To cap a heartening display, 15 year old Sam Osborne on debut built a chanceless, classy, innings of 36, ably assisted by Toby Fynn (20) as the tenth wicket thwarted the spin attack to the tune of 49 unbeaten runs. 225-9 was a creditable score after so many mediocre batting displays this season. Once again Ed Wharton struck early trapping keeper Millard without scoring and having Bamford caught behind by Tidey, but then Reed ran up against another powerful Asian middle order. Ahmed (81) first with Ruwansiri (42) and then Randhawa (43) built two substantial partnerships making the outcome inevitable. Nevertheless, Osborne sneaked one past the skilful Ruwansiri and Wharton, toiling tirelessly in the heat, had two more victims caught by Stuart Smith and Tidey to finish with excellent figures of 16-2-50-4. It was left to captain Lewis to strike the winning runs with 10 overs remaining. Reed gained 9 bonus points, their largest haul of the season so far, but such gallant performances are reaping scant reward for their efforts. Match report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Progression in Defeat

In the second meeting of the season, (the first being in the Cup competition), the Reed Under 13 Team again travelled to Bishop's Stortford to face a strong, well-drilled side. Winning the toss, captain Callum Ricketts opted to bat. Reed struggled to put runs on the board when facing some very tight, fast, accurate, bowling. Progress was slow, with wickets falling cheaply in the 2nd (Eddie Cooke - 0) and 5th overs (Charlie Hawker - 0). Tom Green and Callum Rickets formed a steady partnership for 10 overs before Callum fell in the 15th over, having scored 17. With Reed on 40 runs, things were looking ominous. Daniel Vincent joined Tom in the middle and they attempted to accelerate the run rate through strike rotation and the occasional boundary. 38 runs were added in 28 balls before Tom (caught for 17) and Daniel (bowled for 18) both fell in the last over in successive balls attempting to clear the boundary. The hat-trick was completed with the wicket of Gethin Hill (bowled - 0) before Natasha McNamara (0) and Stanley Johnson (0) saw out the final balls of the innings. Reed posted 81 runs and went into the field under no illusions of the enormity of the task ahead of them. The only path to victory was to load the opening bowlers in the hope of quick wickets. It was to no avail and when Callum Rickets (1 over, 0 maidens, 0 wickets for 2 runs), Daniel Vincent (3-0-0-12) and Eddie Cooke (3-0-0-27) ended their spell, Bishop's Stortford were on 44 for no loss. Victory at Last

A beautiful summer evening to play a relaxed friendly... Allowing some of the less experienced Under 13 and developing players to gain some match time. Reed won the toss and opted to bowl. A decision that immediately paid off when Callum Rickets bowled the opening batsman with the first ball of the match. The second wicket proved slightly harder to come by. With Charlie Cannon scoring a superb run-out off Effie Bone's bowling in the 13th over. With everyone contributing to the bowling, the runs were harder to come by, with particularly tight bowling from Callum Rickets (2 overs, 1 maiden, 1 wicket for 7 runs), Charlie Cannon (2-1-0-4), Lewis Abdul-Karim (2-1-0-4). Chasing 114 for victory, the more experienced and reliable Callum was instructed to rotate the strike to allow others to gain experience. A role he performed admirably - building his total steadily, retiring on 30 in the 15th over partnering 6 other batters, forming a particularly strong partnership with Natasha McNamara (scoring a creditable 11 runs) for 11 overs. With Natasha falling in the 14th over Reed had accumulated 80 runs. A mini-collapse ensued, with 4 wickets falling for just 10 runs. It looked ominous with 24 required for the last wicket with 14 balls left in the innings. Cometh the moment, cometh the man.... With the previous narrow loss to St. Margaretsbury (by 3 runs) fresh in the memory Daniel Vincent stepped up to the crease in no mood to hang around. Partnering Oscar Lamb they achieved the required runs in 12 balls.... With Oscar scoring the winning single. With victory in the bag, the final two balls were bowled with Daniel smashing an enormous 6 over deep midwicket.... ending with 19 [...]

15s fall short in Cambridgeshire Cup

Our Under 15s couldn’t back up their comfortable victory over Royston in the previous round losing by 53 runs to Saffron Walden in the quarter-finals of the Cambridgeshire Cup. We lost the toss on one of our finely prepared new pitches at Reed, stand-in skipper Max Sanderson was powerless to prevent some fine power hitting from Wiseman (56) and Legg (34) despite nearly having the latter caught at slip off his own bowling. We gave debuts to Cotes, Donnor and Wallace all of whom applied themselves well in front of a large gathering of parents enjoying some proper cricket weather at last! Sanderson and manager Barlow continued to experiment with various bowlers and were rewarded with some wickets from Cambridge and Wallace W Green also returned from injury, bowling an encouraging 2-over spell. Strike bowler W Archer bowled with fluency and got the ball to grip and bounce well at times taking the visitors' Legg’s top of off stump. Ultimately the visitors score of 169 was going to be a tough ask though despite some shortish boundaries and a fast outfield. Our response was good though regularly going at 5/6 an over. Sanderson fell just short of a 50 which would of been back to back fifties for him in the competition. Several other batsman got starts and hit a boundary or two but didn’t manage to go on and we finished on 116-7. Manager Richard Barlow was encouraged by our boys display though there were lots of positives this evening and we can take them in to our league campaign. I’m really noticing a change in attitudes too, our availability is improving and hopefully the boys are starting to feel part of a team. [...]

Reed 3rds fall short in the chase

Reed 3rds travelled to Northwood III with a relatively young side with two under 15s playing their first ever adult game. Northwood won the toss and elected to bat on a green wicket. Reed’s bowling started tightly through Owen Hughes (9-0-32-1) and Scott Nash (9-2-18-1) that restricted the opening batsmen of Mackey and Brooker. When the score was on 34 Scott Nash bowled Mackey for 12. This brought Amin to the crease that started to build a partnership with Brooker, however Reed were able to keep the scoring rate low through good bowling and fielding. Will Archer (9-0-32-0) bowled well with no reward. The Reed skipper then turned to Jason Archer to try and break the deadlock. Jason Archer (5-2-9-4) rolled back the years by getting Amin LBW for 41 to break the partnership. Jason Archer then picked up another 3 wickets very quickly through good line and length bowling to leave Northwood 125 for 5. However, Jason had to come off due to the heat. Reed Skipper, Rhodri Hughes (4-0-7-2) brought himself on to bowl with his slow bowling that suited the pitch. He removed Brooker the opener for 48 from a brilliant catch on the boundary from Sam Donner. Charlie Walters (9-0-41-0) bowled tightly at the end of the innings with Rhodri to restrict Northwood to 159 for 9. Reed’s reply started off well with Charlie Walters punishing the bad ball to the boundary, however he fell for 11. Reed also lost Scott Nash quickly to leave them 26 for 2. This brought Marcus Baker to the crease that looked to rebuild with Paul Garrott, it was tough to score through good bowling and fielding from Northwood. Reed going well at 59-2 then [...]
