2021 Match Report

Progression in Defeat

In the second meeting of the season, (the first being in the Cup competition), the Reed Under 13 Team again travelled to Bishop's Stortford to face a strong, well-drilled side. Winning the toss, captain Callum Ricketts opted to bat. Reed struggled to put runs on the board when facing some very tight, fast, accurate, bowling. Progress was slow, with wickets falling cheaply in the 2nd (Eddie Cooke - 0) and 5th overs (Charlie Hawker - 0). Tom Green and Callum Rickets formed a steady partnership for 10 overs before Callum fell in the 15th over, having scored 17. With Reed on 40 runs, things were looking ominous. Daniel Vincent joined Tom in the middle and they attempted to accelerate the run rate through strike rotation and the occasional boundary. 38 runs were added in 28 balls before Tom (caught for 17) and Daniel (bowled for 18) both fell in the last over in successive balls attempting to clear the boundary. The hat-trick was completed with the wicket of Gethin Hill (bowled - 0) before Natasha McNamara (0) and Stanley Johnson (0) saw out the final balls of the innings. Reed posted 81 runs and went into the field under no illusions of the enormity of the task ahead of them. The only path to victory was to load the opening bowlers in the hope of quick wickets. It was to no avail and when Callum Rickets (1 over, 0 maidens, 0 wickets for 2 runs), Daniel Vincent (3-0-0-12) and Eddie Cooke (3-0-0-27) ended their spell, Bishop's Stortford were on 44 for no loss. Victory at Last

A beautiful summer evening to play a relaxed friendly... Allowing some of the less experienced Under 13 and developing players to gain some match time. Reed won the toss and opted to bowl. A decision that immediately paid off when Callum Rickets bowled the opening batsman with the first ball of the match. The second wicket proved slightly harder to come by. With Charlie Cannon scoring a superb run-out off Effie Bone's bowling in the 13th over. With everyone contributing to the bowling, the runs were harder to come by, with particularly tight bowling from Callum Rickets (2 overs, 1 maiden, 1 wicket for 7 runs), Charlie Cannon (2-1-0-4), Lewis Abdul-Karim (2-1-0-4). Chasing 114 for victory, the more experienced and reliable Callum was instructed to rotate the strike to allow others to gain experience. A role he performed admirably - building his total steadily, retiring on 30 in the 15th over partnering 6 other batters, forming a particularly strong partnership with Natasha McNamara (scoring a creditable 11 runs) for 11 overs. With Natasha falling in the 14th over Reed had accumulated 80 runs. A mini-collapse ensued, with 4 wickets falling for just 10 runs. It looked ominous with 24 required for the last wicket with 14 balls left in the innings. Cometh the moment, cometh the man.... With the previous narrow loss to St. Margaretsbury (by 3 runs) fresh in the memory Daniel Vincent stepped up to the crease in no mood to hang around. Partnering Oscar Lamb they achieved the required runs in 12 balls.... With Oscar scoring the winning single. With victory in the bag, the final two balls were bowled with Daniel smashing an enormous 6 over deep midwicket.... ending with 19 [...]

15s fall short in Cambridgeshire Cup

Our Under 15s couldn’t back up their comfortable victory over Royston in the previous round losing by 53 runs to Saffron Walden in the quarter-finals of the Cambridgeshire Cup. We lost the toss on one of our finely prepared new pitches at Reed, stand-in skipper Max Sanderson was powerless to prevent some fine power hitting from Wiseman (56) and Legg (34) despite nearly having the latter caught at slip off his own bowling. We gave debuts to Cotes, Donnor and Wallace all of whom applied themselves well in front of a large gathering of parents enjoying some proper cricket weather at last! Sanderson and manager Barlow continued to experiment with various bowlers and were rewarded with some wickets from Cambridge and Wallace W Green also returned from injury, bowling an encouraging 2-over spell. Strike bowler W Archer bowled with fluency and got the ball to grip and bounce well at times taking the visitors' Legg’s top of off stump. Ultimately the visitors score of 169 was going to be a tough ask though despite some shortish boundaries and a fast outfield. Our response was good though regularly going at 5/6 an over. Sanderson fell just short of a 50 which would of been back to back fifties for him in the competition. Several other batsman got starts and hit a boundary or two but didn’t manage to go on and we finished on 116-7. Manager Richard Barlow was encouraged by our boys display though there were lots of positives this evening and we can take them in to our league campaign. I’m really noticing a change in attitudes too, our availability is improving and hopefully the boys are starting to feel part of a team. [...]

Reed 3rds fall short in the chase

Reed 3rds travelled to Northwood III with a relatively young side with two under 15s playing their first ever adult game. Northwood won the toss and elected to bat on a green wicket. Reed’s bowling started tightly through Owen Hughes (9-0-32-1) and Scott Nash (9-2-18-1) that restricted the opening batsmen of Mackey and Brooker. When the score was on 34 Scott Nash bowled Mackey for 12. This brought Amin to the crease that started to build a partnership with Brooker, however Reed were able to keep the scoring rate low through good bowling and fielding. Will Archer (9-0-32-0) bowled well with no reward. The Reed skipper then turned to Jason Archer to try and break the deadlock. Jason Archer (5-2-9-4) rolled back the years by getting Amin LBW for 41 to break the partnership. Jason Archer then picked up another 3 wickets very quickly through good line and length bowling to leave Northwood 125 for 5. However, Jason had to come off due to the heat. Reed Skipper, Rhodri Hughes (4-0-7-2) brought himself on to bowl with his slow bowling that suited the pitch. He removed Brooker the opener for 48 from a brilliant catch on the boundary from Sam Donner. Charlie Walters (9-0-41-0) bowled tightly at the end of the innings with Rhodri to restrict Northwood to 159 for 9. Reed’s reply started off well with Charlie Walters punishing the bad ball to the boundary, however he fell for 11. Reed also lost Scott Nash quickly to leave them 26 for 2. This brought Marcus Baker to the crease that looked to rebuild with Paul Garrott, it was tough to score through good bowling and fielding from Northwood. Reed going well at 59-2 then [...]

Greaves’s and Lankester’s efforts in vain again

Two half centuries by Tom Greaves (50) and Rob Lankester (58) failed to gain the Firsts a win in this top division once again. After losing both openers early on, the two came together to take the score to 103-2 despite some very tight bowling by the entire Harpenden attack. Indeed captain Nick Lamb made 11 bowling changes to keep the batsmen (and bowlers!) on their toes, which finally wore down their patience as both were out trying to force the run rate to match their opponents 187. Another left arm spinner, Ashleigh Sivirajah, caused them their main problems with his unrelenting accuracy, finishing with figures of 10-3-12-3. The last 8 wickets fell for 45 as the lower order subsided against his spin and fast pace of Chad Barrett (3-22). Earlier, Reed's bowlers toiled manfully to keep a skilful batting unit to 187 all out. The wickets were shared evenly, although there was another notable performance by leg spinner Kapil Dave (2-29) including both Harpenden's top scorers , Lamb (39) and Barrett (49) as his victims. Ed Wharton (2-27) and Mitchell Cooper (2-13 plus a run out) removed the tail for just 23 runs. Reed took all 7 bowling points, but fell agonisingly 2 runs short of a second batting point. Nevertheless the sharp running between the wickets and much better accuracy of the bowling (just one wide and one no ball) gave hope for better results to come. Reed U13s improving every game

Broxbourne 1 may be running top of the league, but Reed's continual improvement in form is beginning to show through. After losing the toss and being put in the field, a change in the opening bowling meant that Aaron Nash (3 overs, 0 maidens, 0 wickets, 19 runs) and Tom Green (3-0-1-19) were pitched against Broxbourne’s openers - bristling with district and county players. Tom and Aaron keeping Broxbourne honest. As is becoming customary.... Reed continued to take wickets at the expense of runs, with newcomer Charlie Cannon (3-0-1-14) and veteran Lily Hall (3-0-1-30) feeling the heat from the dangerous middle order. The depth of Broxbourne's batting line-up started to show, with Stanley Johnson (1-0-0-11) and Sam Dawson (1-0-0-12) being punished by the experienced batting. Reed's most experienced bowlers shored up the bowling, Daniel Vincent (3-0-1-8) and Callum Ricketts (3-0-3-26), but even they could stem the flow. Reed had taken 7 Broxbourne wickets. With Broxbourne on 149, a victory was always going to be a long shot .... But Reed had their eye on achieving maximum batting bonus points. With Broxbourne's bowling line-up as adept as their batters, the aim was to bat long and deep - So the early loss of the normally steady Oscar Lamb for 0 was a big blow. Tom Green (8) was caught attempting to clear the fielder. Daniel Vincent to the crease earlier than expected with Reed on 26 for 2 off 7 overs. Callum and Daniel looked to be steadying the ship once again, before Callum fell on 9 runs to a peach of a ball. Reed race out of the traps! U15 Cup

Our Under 15s finally got their season underway in yet another damp May evening. We travelled to Therfield for our already rearranged cup match, arriving in drizzle and dark clouds it was decided that the game would be reduced to 16 overs. As it happened the game ended up finishing with a nice sunset capping off a strange month of weather. Anyway enough about the weather, the team showed some great potential to dispatch Royston in the first round of The Cambridgeshire Youth Cricket Association Under 15 Cup. Captain Sam Osborne won the toss and elected to bat first. He and wicket-keeper for the evening, Max Sanderson, set a good early pace before Osborne fell for 12. Sanderson kept a high scoring rate on a slow and damp pitch. He was ably supported by James Mitchell, the pair combined some impressive pinch hitting with good strike rotation before both retired Sanderson on 51 and Mitchell on 11. The deluge of runs continued though and Vincent (7) and Walters (20) were both hard to set fields to as they bludgeoned some more runs. Whilst we were heavy favourites after posting 125 for 1 in 16 overs we still needed to concentrate and show control with a wet ball. What impressed onlooking parents no doubt was the boys level of concentration in the field. Harry Brent got the ball rolling with a fine diving catch off the bowling of Will Archer. Brent couldn’t follow up his catch as he shelved what appeared to be an easier chance off his own bowling. The team stuck to their guns though and continued to take wickets at regular intervals including a great direct hit at the bowlers end by Sanderson [...]

Deja vu at Hoddie

Games at Lowfield are invariably tight affairs for the Firsts and this was no exception. Two years ago Hoddesdon pipped Reed to the Championship title here and before that a high scoring encounter ended with the scores tied. This time the hosts won by two wickets in an exciting, nerve jangling match which see-sawed backwards and forwards. Ed Wharton (14) and Will Heslam (17) carefully negotiated the accurate opening attack of new acquisition, South African paceman Matt Varner and perennially miserly Martin Brown, slowly building a foundation for the innings. However at 55 for 3 a big partnership was required and Rob Lankester (64) in tandem with Sean Tidey (44) obliged, taking the score to 140. With 5 overs left and Lankester starting to strike sixes, 180+ seemed possible, but three wickets in three balls turned the game back in Hoddie's favour. A run-a-ball cameo of 15 by Stuart Smith helped to take it to 166 for 8, a par score considering the slow wicket and wet outfield. In contrast to Reed's patience, Hoddesdon started aggressively and paid the price. Ed Wharton (2-24) and Toby Fynn (2-23) abetted by Smith's safe hands in the deep, left them in big trouble at 31-4, but this brought to the wicket Reed's arch nemesis, South African Jayden Broodryk who once again punished them to the tune of 68 runs. Initially, with keeper Will Steward (29), he defied the best efforts of spinners Tom Greaves and Kapil Dave until the latter sharply turned a ball through Steward's defence and finally had Broodryk snick one behind to Tidey. Lily does it again!

Lily Hall is fast becoming a force to be reckoned with... a silent assassin with bat and ball. Reed won the toss and chose to field first.... The opening bowling pairing of Daniel Vincent (3 overs, 0 maidens, 0 wickets, 14 runs) and Eddie Cook (3-0-0-17) had to work hard against a strong headwind and did well to keep the batsmen honest, conceding 34 runs off the first 6 overs. It was 1st change bowler, Josh Heslam (a last minute replacement for Tom Green) who demonstrated the power of a straight delivery... His low, skiddy, deliveries getting the better of the opposition - finishing 3-0-1-7. Callum Ricketts came on for a single over to stem the runs, taking the wicket of the opening batsman in the process. With St. Margaretsbury at 2 for 50 in 9 overs, the game was in danger of getting away from Reed. It was then that the silent assassin (Lily Hall) got hold of the cherry and showed the boys what girl power really was.... As has happened so often this season, Lily was underestimated by the opposition. Following in Josh's footsteps and keeping bowling simple, Lily was just unstoppable. Eddie Cook took a superb catch off Lily's second ball; and her spell (3-1-3-6) included an incredible caught/bowled and a wicket maiden... the game was back on.... 76-5 off 16. Runs dried up for the opposition after Lilly's spell and St. Margaretsbury finished on 93 for 5. Reed's bowling had improved immeasurably over the previous week and limited the opposition to less than 100 for the first time this season. So close for Reed Under 9s

Reed under 9s were at home to Hertford on Friday evening, giving debuts to Toby and Poppy. In batting first Seb and Josh got Reed off to a fast start with Seb scoring (a net) 10 and Josh 12. But wickets continued to fall in the Reed innings and with tighter bowling, Reed ended up on 284 for 7 (250 net). With very credible mentions to Harry and Jack both hitting boundaries and Rebecca getting a wicket and being involved in a run out (as she was playing for Hertford!) Wickets were hard to come by for Reed with Hertford showing some resilient defensive shots and Reed with slightly more wayward bowling than normal. Josh was the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 6. Toby took a wicket with his first ball and if this form continues, it would be great to see him emulating his uncle and opening the bowling for Reed 1st team. Whilst Frankie also took a wicket. It all came down to the last 2 overs with Reed needing 2 or 3 wickets to win the game but despite 12 out of 12 balls pitching on the stumps and mostly deviating, Reed couldn't get the breakthroughs and Hertford ended up winning by 10 runs scoring 285 for 5 (260 net).
