Rescue act in Radlett in vain

Reed travelled to Radlett for their latest match in the Premier Division of the Saracens Herts. League. Losing the toss on a day that looked more like one from March than late-August, Reed were asked to take first knock. The raw pace of Sanghera plus the left arm over of 15 year old Noah Cornwell kept runs at a premium in the early overs. Ed Wharton was the first to fall caught at deep mid-on for just 8. Will Heslam, Reed’s hero last week was struck on the helmet by a Sanghera bouncer and fell soon after for 4. Wickets fell regularly and Reed were teetering at 43 for 6 in just the 14th Over. Mitchell Cooper and Sean Tidey set about rebuilding the innings. They punished anything loose and short and pushed the score over 100, with the first batting point in sight, Tidey was stumped off the bowling of Josh De Caires, the son of former England Captain Michael Atherton, for 28. Cooper continued on, striking 6 fours and 3 sixes before edging behind for 48 off 61 balls. Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn added 15 for the last wicket as Reed were dismissed for 145 in the 37th Over. A more than respectable recovery from the position they were in earlier! With Jack Tidey unable to bowl, Reed opened their attack with Ed Wharton (9-2-29-2) and Toby Fynn. Wharton soon struck taking the edge of Chatfield’s bat for a great catch behind by Sean Tidey with the score on 11. Wharton’s good lines and bounce soon snaffled a second wicket, De Caires for 21, and at 34-2, Reed were back in the match. Crawford and Arul responded to the Reed bowlers and [...]

Headlines: Week ending 30th August

Saturday (SHPCL): Mitchell Cooper top-scored for the 1st XI hitting 48 of Reed's 145 all out. Sean Tidey chipped-in with 28. Radlett lost only 5 wickets in passing the target; 2 wickets each for Karl Ward and Ed Wharton plus a run out by Karl. A somewhat depleted 2nd XI could manage only 134 in reply to Lutonians' 307 for 4, so not much to write home about there! The Thirds were reasonably well-placed at 109 for 3 when the abandonment came after 25 overs. Paul Garrott was out for 33 and Rob Willoughby was 55 not out. Earlier, Rob had taken 3 wickets as had Owen Hughes and Joe Graves added 2 victims in Bamville's 233 all out. Nothing had been arranged for Sunday. Enjoy the Bank Holiday as best you can! PGB

Headlines: Week ending 23rd August

Saturday SHPCL: The 1st XI came close to victory away at Welwyn Garden City when chasing 227 all out; Reed ended on 220 for 9. Toby Fynn and Rob Lankester had taken 3 wickets each but Reed's star batsman was Will Heslam who was 9th man out after scoring 111. At The Green, Southgate Adelaide could not contend with Rupert Martin who returned 5 for 28 as their innings petered all out for 87, some 143 below Reed's Second XI's total of 230 for 7. Chris Jackson was again the host's mainstay by scoring 81. Once more at the Freman Oval, Reed 3rds notched-up in excess of 190 and this time were on the winning side. George Garrott scored 70, Scott Nash 40 and Under 15, Charlie Waters, 23, closing on 192 for 8. But the bowling honours went to young Will Archer, the fourteen-year-old claiming a superb 5 for 18 as Letchworth Garden City were bowled out for 98. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. Sunday: Players across the age-range from 14 to 66 along with Smith family relatives, friends and well-wishers gathered to celebrate popular Vice-President Graham Smith's 70th Birthday. A limited overs social match was played with a variety of skills on display. Happy Birthday Twisty. PGB

Headlines: Week ending 16th August

If it can be newsworthy, then only 7 fixtures in the entire Herts League programme were concluded on Saturday; none of them involved Reed teams. Therefore, after 5 weeks and with 4 more to go, Reed 1st XI are in 5th spot in the Premier Division; the Seconds are joint top in 3B; the Third team occupy 7th position in 10A. However, I remind you that there will be no promotion or relegation this season. (And no Prize Money so we are told!) Sunday's friendly against North Harrow also fell foul to the weather. PGB Hon. Under 12s play their first games

Reed's Under 12s played their first game in a friendly against Broxbourne on Monday. With this being the first game of the season and the first ever game for many of the Reed players, the bowling and batting duties would be spread among the experienced and new players to keep everyone involved. Broxbourne batted first and their opening pairing put on 44 for the first wicket. Despite some very tight bowling from Callum Ricketts, Broxbourne scored 85 runs for the second wicket before Tom Green removed 3 for just 5 runs in his second spell, ending with figures of 3 for 14 off 4 overs. Broxbourne finished on 141 for 4 off their 20 overs. Pick of the Batsmen: M Hannington 26 (retired) D Stark 25 (retired) Pick of the Bowling: Tom Green 3 for 14 off 4 overs, Stanley Johnson 1 for 16 off 2, Callum Ricketts 0 for 8 off 3. Reed went into bat requiring 142. This was always going to be a tough target to chase with inexperienced and young (a number of the batsmen are U11 players) and the economical bowling meant that once the more experienced batsmen were out, runs were difficult to come by. Broxbourne were particularly efficient in the field, limiting the number of singles to be had. Reed reached 89 all out in the 20th over. Pick of the Batsmen Callum Ricketts - 15, Daniel Vincent - 14. Some glimpses of talent from a number of newcomers.... Aaron Nash and Stanley Johnson following in their respective fathers' footsteps with some big hitting..... The return fixture is next Tuesday on The Green at Reed. Match Report submitted by Lee Vincent. On Wednesday the 12th, Reed travelled to [...]

Headlines: Week ending 9th August

Saturday, SHPCL: Mitchell Cooper put in a good all-round performance with 3 wickets and 41 not out in the 1st XI’s victory at North Mymms. Sean Tidey took 3 wickets and Matt Giblin 2 as the hosts were all out for 152. Reed made short work of the run-chase as Jack Caine (31) and Stuart Smith (24 not out) supported Cooper’s innings to win by 4 wickets. The Seconds continued their 100% record by bundling Sandridge out for 148 then losing only 3 wickets in reply. Julien Fynn led with 5 wickets and Karl Ward took 4. Tom Greaves scored an eighty and Chris Jackson was 32 not out when the winning runs came. At the Freman Oval, the Willoughby brothers, Rob (65) and Kieren (44 not out), were instrumental in the Third Team’s total of 194 for 9. George Garrott chipped in with 25. The wickets were shared between Garrott, Greg McKinnell, Will Archer and Charlie Walters but they could not prevent Rickmansworth reaching their target with 4 wickets and 2 overs in-hand. Sunday: The friendly against Little Hadham ended as a Tie - no super overs in this format! Little Hadham batted first and posted 152. Ben Mansfield got a wicket in the first over then Joe Graves and Will Archer both bowled very well getting 2 wickets each. Reed's runs from Matt Giblin (32), Will Heslam (33), and Will Archer (31 not out) who came very close to hitting the winning runs but unfortunately there was a run out when the scores were level with the last man in. Match summary by Matt Giblin. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly.

Reed U10s making winning debuts!

Reed CC U10s comprising of several of the Reed "Invincibles" U9s of last season plus a few players from last season’s U11s team travelled to Knebworth Park for what was many of their hardball cricketing debuts. Up against a side of more experience and age they put in an excellent performance to win by 18 runs. Reed Captain Josh Heslam set the tone clean bowling two of the Knebworth batsmen in the first over of the game and well supported by Jon Green the visitors were off to a flyer. Although Knebworth hit a few nice boundaries, all of the young Reed bowling unit bowled well and this contained them to a score of 225, with the pick of the remainder of the attack Rory Longland and 7-year old off spinner Eddie Heslam who bowled 2 overs for 2 wickets and no runs! Reed fielded excellently with a fine catch by Josh Heslam and two run outs, the backing up probably needs some work at Sunday practices! In reply, Reed faced a strong Knebworth bowling attack but held their nerve well to secure a close fought victory. Joseph Rhodes (7) and Josh Heslam (6) were the two Reed batsman to find the boundary as by ticking the scoreboard over on a regular basis Reed amassed a match winning 243 despite losing 5 wickets to the good Knebworth bowling with limited hardball batting experience. PGB ************************************************************************* About this Event. The laws of cricket, like the laws of the land, aim at a sort of justice or balancing between different factions. The purpose behind cricket's laws, and behind changes in them, is often to calibrate the balance in the game between batsmen and bowlers, between attack and defence, between safety and risk. Cricketing lawmakers are interested in the overall appeal of the game to players and spectators alike. Join Mike Brearley as he talks about The Spirit of Cricket, his new book which considers issues across the game such as 'Mankading', the Australian ball-tampering scandal, intimidatory bowling, sledging and mental disintegration - as well as the notion of the spirit of the game for umpires, groundsmen, administrators, media and spectators - as well, of course, as for players. Mike Brearley OBE was educated at Cambridge, where he read classics and moral sciences, and captained the university. He played for Middlesex County Cricket Club intermittently from 1961 to 1983, captaining the side from 1971 to 1982. He first played for England in 1976 and captained the side from 1977 to 1980, winning seventeen test matches and losing only four. Reed fall just short despite a Tidey performance

Reed entertained Potters Bar at The Green in their latest Premier League match. Winning the toss, Reed put their opponents in. They didn’t have to wait long for the first wicket when Palmer was bowled offering no shot to Jack Tidey. Hussain became Tidey’s second wicket edging to keeper Rich Wharton with the score on 31 and when Ed Wharton added the wicket of Patel with a superb catch at midwicket by skipper Rob Lankester, the visitors were struggling at 44-3. Pat Scott completed his 50 for the visitors but fell to Tidey two balls later, his brother Charlie fell first ball and the quick bowler completed his 5-wicket haul when Wijesuriya fell playing on, Potters Bar were 89 for 6. The opposition’s overseas player Miguel Nunes-Macahado came to the wicket and began to build Potters Bar recovery, despite losing James Scott with the score at 112, he shared a 57 run partnership with Chapman as they took the score beyond 200. He eventually went for 105 in just 83 balls. Potters Bar were eventually dismissed for 242 in over 43. Tidey’s figures of 9-2-37-5 the stand-out of the Reed bowling attack, the ground fielding too was out of the top drawer. Reed began their reply with two lofty blows by Ed Wharton before he was caught at point. Brother Richard and skipper Lankester batted sensibly punishing anything loose. The 50 partnership came up off of 82 balls. Lankester eventually fell for 31, James Heslam went lbw with the score on 82 for 3 with 20 overs already gone. Jack Caine made 21 before being stumped, meanwhile Wharton reached his 50 before falling for 56 (143 for 6), Mitchell Cooper 27 (25 balls) and Sean [...]

Headlines: Week ending 2nd August

The First XI were at home to Potters Bar and couldn't quite manage to match their 242 all out. Jack Tidey had taken 5 visitors' wickets then Richard Wharton scored 56 and Rob Lankester 31 in the run chase but Reed ended on 214 for 8. Meanwhile at Wheathampstead, club captain Tom Greaves, returning from injury, skippered the Second XI to a five-wicket victory and led from the front with a half-century. Chris Jackson was 76 not out when Reed overhauled the hosts' 224 for 5, there had been 2 wickets each for Matt Giblin and Julien Fynn. Sam Osborne, from the Under 15 Colts, made his debut for the Seconds scoring an impressive 32. The Third Team's match was cancelled. Andrew Emms had also taken the decision to not hold his President's Day this year.
