Honorary Secretary’s Report, 2020

I am assuming that you won’t want my annual report to be peppered with all those words that we had never needed to use in our cricketing lexicon before, so let’s get them out of the way in the first paragraph – unprecedented, truncated, sanitizer, restricted, lockdown, PPE, running-lane, Covid, furlough, Coronavirus, pandemic, remote, roadmap for return, virtual, self-isolation, facemask, government advice, bubble, social distancing – the list goes on and I’m sure you can add a few of your own. I’ll try not to repeat them! At the AGM in November 2019 Sean Tidey departed the General Committee because he was too old to remain the Under 25 Representative! Rhodri Hughes succeeded him. Rhodri was also elected as the Third Team Captain and Matt Bowles became Vice-Captain of the Second XI. Julien Fynn joined the General Committee (Without Portfolio) and after several decades, Jonathan Fynn decided to cease auditing duties and nominated another of his sons, Alec, to take over from him. The General Committee consists of 24 people and it met in January and March as normal then via Zoom from June onwards. Whilst never getting a full-house, (the best was 21 attending in July), overall average attendance was 76.56% over the year with 5 members having a 100% record. Additionally the Executive Committee met three times. Exigent Club business and all periphery issues affected by the Government’s and ECB’s rules continued to be administered by close contact between Committee members using available electronic wizardry. Good news on the Inspection front - North Herts District Council, (NHDC), assessed us as being low risk relating to the Food Safety and Hygiene (England) Regulations 2013. And the annual inspection of our Fire Extinguishers was satisfactory. [...]

End of Season Reviews, Captains & Colts’ Managers

1st XI REPORT 2020 A lot of positives to take out of a very strange first Premier League season. We managed to get 8 games in and although we only won 1, we pushed most teams hard and made a bit of a name for ourselves in the League that we won’t be push overs. Will Heslam made a sublime 100 whilst chasing 227 over at Welwyn. A game in which ex-Test match player Owais Shah was playing. We ended 7 runs short in one of the games of the season. This ended up being a bit of a habit and probably a lack of experience at the top level cost us a couple of times. However huge positives were to be taken from performances by Jack Tidey in particular. Home grown and proving to be the number 1 bowler in the Premier League at his first time of asking was a huge achievement and I’m sure only a small sign of things to come. Mitchell Cooper also played superbly well averaging well into the 40s showing great maturity with the bat coupled with ball striking on another level. We hope that things get back to some kind of normality for the 2021 season. With plenty of positives to take into the spring my hope is that we can maintain our Premier League status, look to continue to build our squad and play lots of entertaining cricket at the green. In the meanwhile I hope you all stay safe, and that current times will all be a distant memory soon. Fingers crossed I’ll share a cold one with you all during the summer. Go well! Tom Greaves, Club Captain, RCC. ************************************************** 2nd XI REPORT 2020 [...]

Life Membership for John Heslam

John Heslam was made a Life Member of the Cricket Club at the General Committee Meeting last week. This acknowledged JQH’s massive contribution dating back to 1980. John spent 36 years on the Committee; 25 as Club Chairman. He became Club Captain in 1985 when Reed was building a competitive side that recorded numerous promotions and cup triumphs during his tenure. Latterly, he also skippered the Second XI when several Colts, whose teams he also successfully managed, were first introduced to playing “Open-Age” Cricket matches. Many of those youngsters now form the backbone of the current Senior XIs. Off the field, John was instrumental in planning the construction of extensions on our super pavilion and under his leadership and as Fundraising Officer he secured thousands of pounds in sponsorship and grants from various sources. He also procured everything from carpet tiles to fire doors, and from safes to lorry loads of concrete and building materials for those extensions, ensuring all tasks were completed on time and on-budget. This short summary of his association with the Club does not scratch the surface of JQH’s commitment to RCC and his significant influence on its history. Life Membership is in recognition of those forty years’ of service. Thank you John. Peter G. Baker. Honorary Secretary, Reed CC November 2020.

AGM – an explanatory note

To Members of Reed Cricket Club, The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Reed CC usually takes place during November of each year. Because of the restrictions relating to Covid-19 affecting the number of people allowed to gather together, the Club's General Committee took the decision to postpone the AGM for three months in the hope that the restrictions would be relaxed by then, thus permitting a proper meeting to be held in the Howard Marshall Pavilion. The date chosen is Thursday 18th February 2021. Alas, with the reintroduction of a further short period of "lockdown" the indications are that our AGM might have to be conducted virtually after all. Safety is paramount so if that is the case, we shall inform you how we intend running the meeting which, in all likelihood, would probably require setting deadlines for proposals, elections and constitutional rule changes to be submitted in the weeks before 18th February. Whilst we hope that we will be able to meet as usual, the Committee is looking at ways that balloting, etc., can be administered remotely. I shall let you know what we have decided nearer the time. I know some Club Members do not receive emails or have access to the internet. Whilst I shall attempt to update them myself, please may I trust that their family members convey the above message to them. Thank you. Meanwhile, I wish you and your families well. Stay safe and healthy and I look forward to seeing you either in person or virtually in the near future. PGB Peter G. Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed Cricket Club.
