2014 Hon Secretary’s Season Review

Before I look back at to the 2014 season I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those from the club who sponsored me for my Prudential Ride London 100 cycle event. Also of significance for me was the fact that the 2014 season was the first time since I joined the club in 1990 that I hadn't picked up a bat in anger. Of more importance at the start of the season was would we still be able to get out four league sides? The first few weeks were a struggle and being 4th XI skipper is a tough job. John Kershaw had to relinquish the reins due to work commitments and the club owes Peter Baker a debt of gratitude for coming to the rescue and taking up the unenviable task. In the end, the 4th XI finished a comfortable 6th in their division and had to cancel a lot fewer games than some other big clubs in that division. Please read Peter's review of the 4th XI season for greater detail. The start of the season also saw the unveiling of the new electronic scoreboard. Thanks goes to John Heslam for organising the quote and getting the design put together. Richard Roberston and John then hired a van and drove to Yorkshire to pick up all the parts, after which the club carpenter, Paul Watts, was on hand to redo the facia and put all the parts in place. We have also got a new website that will hopefully stand the test of time and be a resource for those who want to see who we are and what we have achieved in our history. We have come a long [...]

2014 Sunday XI Review

Unbelievably another season has finished and it’s time once again to reminisce on some of the best performances of the Friendly Sunday XI. In total we played 16 games winning 8, losing 7 with one abandoned. The high number of loses can perhaps be attributed to the large amount of ‘conference’ fixtures we played due to arranged opposition dropping out. On these occasions playing stronger teams was preferred to not playing at all and none the less in most cases Reed gave a good account for themselves. For example the final game against Spartans was turning into a very interesting run chase until the poor September light made it impossible. The side was once again made up in the main by our younger members (when we could prise them away from revision). The likes of Matt Yates, Pippa Wisdom, Ollie Mansfield and Toby Emes all made their Sunday debuts. Whilst Jack Childs, Joe Graves, Owen and Rhodri Hughes, Sam Rice and Ben Moody, all under 18, played often throughout the season. Whilst their elders, Graham Stuart, Lloyd Bowman, Jack Tidey, Craig Brown, Matt Giblin and Peter and Marcus Baker, were also regulars in the side. A review of the highlights of the season has to include the incredible partnership between Rhodri Hughes (60) and Sam Fairbrother (120) against Knebworth Blue. Despite constant drizzle the pair made 205 equalling the record first wicket partnership for the club. For Rhodri it was another fantastic season, scoring 197 runs and making 50+ scores twice. Once again he showed his great ability in the field and also proved a sensible leader when given the captaincy. Another hugely entertaining century came from Sam Deville in his single appearance for the [...]

2014 4th XI Season Review

Before writing this review, I re-read the last one I had written, when I was captain in 2011. That year, we had a basically consistent squad containing half-a-dozen adult players that were all experienced, long-standing members of the club who had played at a good standard and continued to produce match-winning performances and six or seven teen-aged colts who had showed great potential and memorably contributed outstanding innings or bowling spells. Between 10 different batsmen, we accumulated 1 century and 15 fifties and the team aggregated 2560 runs, three of the bowlers took 51 wickets between them and significantly we also fulfilled 19 League fixtures that season. What a difference in 2014. In all we completed just 8 matches. Five were in Division 12 East of the Herts League (with another abandoned after 2 overs), then we played three further “friendly” matches to round-off the season. There was only one fifty, Reece Fitzgerald’s masterly 81 in our victory over Wheathampstead on a damp pitch at Kimpton, and one century, Kieran Willoughby’s well-earned 100 not out versus Hitchin in a high-scoring draw. It was Kieran’s maiden ton and it followed his first-ever fifty, (for the Third XI), only one month previously. Apart from these two young players, Peter Baker, (94), and Lloyd Bowman, (78), had the next highest aggregates and no one else surpassed 45, although Freddy Stuart scored 42 not out in his only innings. Joe Graves claimed 9 wickets in the three League matches he played, 3 in each, with a best of 3 for 14. Owen Hughes pipped him with 10 wickets in the 5 games he played, although Joe averaged 5.3 runs per wicket and Owen, 9.1. Unsurprisingly with young players restricted [...]
