Reed U11s make it a perfect 8 out of 8 at the halfway stage!

The impressive Reed Under 11s squad continued their excellent start to the season making it a perfect 8 wins out of 8 matches with two further wins for both their A and B teams in the last few weeks. The first of the victories for the A team came against Letchworth at a well-attended sunny Reed Green where although scoring quickly Reed youngsters were in a spot of bother at 33 for 4, however 9 year-old Eddie Heslam accompanied by Jon Green batted with great maturity and stabilised the innings with them both retiring on 25 and 26 respectively as Reed continued through their full 20 overs totalling 135 for 8, a total they felt confident of defending. This proved to be the case as early wickets for the intimidating opening pair of Charlie Ingrey and Josh Heslam saw Reed on their way, and with the usual tight Reed fielding piled on the pressure producing two excellent direct hit run outs from Green and J Heslam so Letchworth were soon struggling in their reply. Further wickets for Ollie Kimsey, Zac Rouse (2-6) and Eddie Heslam saw Letchworth subside to 52 all out in 11.4 overs. A comprehensive win for Reed and a good all-round cricketing performance by all the boys, well martialled by Captain Josh Heslam. The 2nd win for the Reed A team came in much more comfortable circumstances away to Hatfield Hyde. U15s run chase comes up short

Reed hosted St. Margaretsbury on the back of three wins on the bounce. St. Margaretsbury won the toss and opted to bat first. Aggressive batting against the opening pairing of Charlie Walters and Ollie Cambridge meant that SM were off to a flier, scoring 41 runs off the first 5 overs. Ollie C (who had been unusually expensive to this point) then struck... Removing both openers in the space of 3 balls. Finishing with figures of 3 overs, 0 maidens, 2 wickets for 28 runs. Charlie finishing his spell with 3-0-0-17. George Woods and Callum Ricketts made up the second Seam / Spin pairing, but St. Margaretsbury's onslaught didn't let up.... After 12 overs, SM were on 102 for 2 (GW 3-0-0-27, CR 3-0-0-20). Olli Tapsell and Jacob Vincent tried to stem the flow, with Jacob getting wickets with his 6th and 7th balls. OT finished his overs on 2-0-0-19. Jacob saved himself for the last over... Daniel Vincent bowled steady (2-0-0-15), and Charlie Cannon bowled the 18th over for 17 runs. Jacob finished the innings with another wicket (3-0-3-15) St. Margaretsbury has amassed 169 runs. Some uncharacteristic dropped catches and fielding errors had cost Reed a few runs. 169 was going to be a tough chase. The Opening Pairing of Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge went after the opening bowling pairing and were looking good right up the last ball of the 6th over, when Ollie saw his stumps skittled, falling for 9. Reed were 36 for 1 off 6. Jacob followed in the 8th over falling for 26 and Reed were on 39 for 2 with George Wood and Charlie Walters at the crease. George (5) was caught in the 11th over. WILL AND SAM STAND OUT AT HITCHIN

An opening stand of 166 between Will Heslam (106) and Sam Osborne (55), providing the anchor, gave Reed the impetus to post a fine score against Hitchin on a road. Both openers rode their luck, surviving sharp chances in the slips, but Heslam was in fine form hitting 14 boundaries and Osborne gave him steady company with his second half century of the season. When both were out in quick succession you feared another batting collapse, but Rob Lankester, Zac McGuigan, Sean Tidey and Bertie Scott all made double figures, although Tom Greaves fired a swift 30, including two maximums, to ensure Reed totalled 254 for 6 in their 50 overs. Hitchin were beset with injuries caused during the game to two of their top three batters, but that did not hamper A.J. Momi, who smashed 87 with 10 boundaries and 4 maximums, despite batting with a runner throughout. However, unlike in Reed’s innings, he was not supported by his top order, which succumbed to the spin of Scott and Greaves, taking two wickets apiece. A defining moment came when McGuigan returned with a fiery spell of 2-13, including the prize wicket of Momi, trapped in front. Only wicketkeeper, Dryden (37) caused a flutter of concern, but Toby Fynn with 3-35 cleaned him up to leave Hitchin on 214. U15s in game of two halves

Bishop's Stortford won the toss and chose to field. In a shake up of the batting order, Jacob and Daniel Vincent opened. A decision that was regretted when both openers were dismissed playing questionable strokes early on - both caught at mid-wicket. Daniel for 4, Jacob for 10. When Eddie Cooke fell second ball for nought, Reed looked in trouble. Then when Kerian, who looked in good form, was dismissed 4 balls later Reed were 32 for 4 off 6 overs. Callum Ricketts and Aaron Nash were at the crease. Plenty of overs left, and Reed needed to settle... Callum was performing an admirable role in blocking, but fell in the 7th over for nought. Reed were reeling on 36 for 5. Oli Cambridge strode out with purpose with 12 overs left. Aaron fell in the 10th over. Charlie Cannon joined Ollie and scored a boundary off his first ball. Ollie was determined to keep the strike, and Charlie was determined to run hard to keep him there. Unfortunately, Charlie was caught on his second ball. Reed were 49 for 7 from 11 overs. Liam Neal came to the crease with few runs to his name this season, so it was a pleasant surprise when the run rate accelerated. It was more of a surprise that Reed survived until the 18th over before Liam was caught on 9 having score 2 boundaries. George Wood went in to help Ollie make the score respectable... putting on 14 runs between them in 16 balls, Ollie reaching 35, George 2. Reed finished on 99. Reed U11s get the season off to a flying start!

Reed U11s started the season in fine fashion with 4 wins in two weeks with the A and B team recording two victories a piece. The first and most impressive victory came away to Hitchin in the first game for the A team. Up against a strong team comprising of a number of Herts District players away from home, Reed opening pair of their Captain Josh Heslam (25 retired) and Ethan Fox (13) off the back of a prolific season last year playing a year up set off in typical fashion batting sensibly and running excellently between the wickets taking the score to 51 for 1 off 9 overs and setting a positive tone for the team. Unfortunately when they both departed Reed suffered a middle order collapse not helped by a few run outs which left things to the last 3 Reed batters, Matthew Jackson, Oliver Kimsey and Zak Rouse to importantly chip in with a few later order runs again running well between the wickets and ensuring Reed batted their full allocation collecting additional extras along the way and closing on 106 for 8. This proved it’s worth as the strong Reed bowling and fielding outfit managed to squeeze the Hitchin batting line up. At 33 for 4 off 10 the home side were well behind the rate. Although they rallied well consistent bowling throughout by Reed contained Hitchin to 82 all out in the final over. Wickets and good economy were shared around the superb Reed attack with the pick of the bowling stats Matthew Jackson with 2 for 4 off his two overs including a fine take by Fox behind the stumps. SEAN SPARES REED’S BLUSHES IN DEFEAT

A potent mixture of line and length, pace, early seam and swing left Reed Firsts in the proverbial dire straits at 36 for 7. Old Owens’ bowlers Bloxham (3) and Wickham (4) ripped through the visitors' top order with only Matt Sampson (11) reaching double figures. Fortunately Sean Tidey was at his belligerent best, counter attacking with 6 boundaries and 2 maximums in his 52. He was ably supported by Ryan Waldock with a patient 14 in 44 balls. Their stand of 43 at least gave Reed some respectability, although a total of 105 would never be enough on a pitch which had lost its initial spite. Indeed, Stephen Williams smashed 64 not out as Old Owens cruised to victory by 8 wickets in just 15 overs. Toby Fynn and Bertie Scott took the wickets from steepling catches. U15s composed against Welwyn

After two tough league games, Reed’s U15 team visited Welwyn and into the unknown. Reed won the toss and elected to bat. The opening pairing of Jacob Vincent and Ollie Cambridge started steadily and then rapidly accelerated the run-rate after 4 tight overs. Good communication and quick singles were interspersed with plenty of boundaries. Jacob retired with a boundary bringing up 42 off 29 balls; the opening partnership having reached 79. Ollie C fell in the next over on 18. With George Wood and Ollie Tapsell new to the crease the expectation was for the run rate to stall, but it didn’t. Ollie T and Wood took the initiative and peppered the boundary. Wood finished on 21 from 16, Ollie T on 16 from 15 balls. With the innings reaching the final stages, Eddie Cook blasted 2 quick boundaries before being bowled. Daniel Vincent (1) and Jake Garner (2) seeing out the final few balls. Reed had set a defendable score of 146 for 4. In a shake-up, the ex-U13 dream team of Callum Ricketts and Daniel Vincent opened the bowling with a view to keeping the openers quiet. With Daniel’s pace variation, and Callum’s spin bamboozling the openers, the first 5 overs went for just 18 runs. Callum Ricketts struck in the 6th after Welwyn attempted to accelerate. Holding his nerve after two boundaries, Callum clean-bowled the opening batter. With Welwyn playing expansive cricket, Reed continued the seam / spin combination with Ollie Tapsell and Ollie Cambridge. SAM’S 50 SECURES A SUCCESSFUL START TO THE SEASON

Reed Firsts made a successful start to their league campaign with a well deserved win over old rivals Preston. Having been put in during the most difficult of the day's conditions, they made a steady start reaching 78 for 1 through a stand of 59 between Sam Osborne and Rob Lankester (35). Bertie Scott then gave the innings momentum cracking 7 boundaries, including 4 from one over, in a quick-fire 29. When Osborne, who only turned 16 two days previously, was eventually dismissed for a disciplined, well crafted 56, Reed looked well placed at 165 for 5, but Australian, Sathyajith, took 4 for 12 to restrict them to 193 for 9. Matt Sampson's 22 was the mainstay of the lower order. At 70 for 1, Preston appeared to be on top, but Toby Fynn's economical 10 over spell for 27 had already put them behind the asking rate and spinners Scott (1-36) and Tom Greaves (3-23) from their full allocations put them even further behind. The latter removed the dangerous Ed Wharton for a golden duck on his return to The Green courtesy of a sensational catch by James Heslam at first slip. It was left to Karl Ward (3-13) and Matt Giblin (2-34) to clean up the innings, leaving Preston 134 all out. The tough games keep coming for Reed U15s

When Bishop's Stortford rolled into town with multiple county players, it was always going to be tricky for the Reed U15s, especially when a depleted side were relying on support from 2 enthusiastic U13s players. Bishops Stortford won the toss and opted to bat first. In a marked improvement from the first match, the opening bowlers kept the bowling tight, and extras to a minimum. In a deliberate tactic, Reed interspersed their seam and spin bowlers - A tactic which initially worked well with Oli Cambridge dismissing batter #2 with his second ball - clean bowled. Reed continued to take regular wickets, but the strong Stortford batting line-up regularly found the boundary. Pick of the bowlers were George Wood (3-1-2-17) and Oli Cambridge (3-0-2-25), With Daniel Vincent taking one wicket, and stumping the non-striker off his own bowling with some sharp hands. Stortford finished on 150 for 6. Facing some rapid bowling, the opening pairing of Jacob Vincent and George Wood tried to weather the storm in the hope of some relief with the change bowlers. Unfortunately, George was caught on 0 and Jacob followed shortly after after some superb 'keeping had him stumped on 6. Reed never really recovered, and the bowling remained relentless for the first 10 overs. It was only after the spinners came on that Reed had the opportunity to score runs, but by then then Reed had lost 7 wickets for a score of 33. With the match lost and Callum Ricketts and Liam Neal determined to see out the overs, the innings drifted towards its conclusion.
