Performance of the Round – Tom Greaves

In each round of the 2017 National Village Cup Gunn & Moore sponsor an award for the Performance of the Round. Organisers at The Cricketer magazine have announced that the Performance of the Semi-Final Round goes to Reed CC Captain Tom Greaves who came in to bat at 88-5 and helped steady the ship and get some much-needed lower order runs towards the end of Reed’s innings. Greaves scored 48 off just 36 balls in a performance that saw him hit 5 sixes and a four. Aston Rowant appeared constantly behind the run rate when they batted. Bringing himself on as first-change bowler, Tom played an important role in dismissing Aston Rowant’s lower-middle order, taking wickets six, seven, and eight, including two lbws. During his eight overs Tom conceded 33 runs for his 3 wickets, at an economy rate of 4.13 per over. As winner of the Performance of the Round Tom receives a specially engraved Gunn & Moore cricket bat customised to show his performance. Additionally, all the round winners will be invited to the Gunn & Moore factory in Nottingham, when they will see for themselves the GM bat making process. Every round winner will be in with a chance of being picked for the 2017 Performance of the Season. The winner will receive a Gunn & Moore kitbag, including bat, pads, gloves and helmet. Tom will be in direct competition for this accolade with, amongst others, Sean Tidey who won Performance of the Quarter-Final Round.

Reed are going back to Lord’s !

2012 Village Cup champions Reed took on Oxfordshire outfit Aston Rowant in a relatively low scoring tie with Reed emerging victorious. Batting first, home side Reed, captained by Tom Greaves, found it difficult to score quickly on a pitch that enticed Aston Rowant’s bowlers to find the outside edge of the Reed batsmen. Will Heslam, brother of former captain James Heslam, was out cheaply for 6 to A-R opening bowler Whatman and Rob Lankester fell soon after, leaving Reed floundering on 13-2. Rebuilding up until drinks, Reed were 65-3 with most of those coming off the bat of Richard Wharton who exuded a sense of calm whilst at the crease, scoring elegantly both sides of the wicket. When left arm spinner Alexander Barras dismissed Wharton, who fell two short of his half-century, with another of his well-directed darts, the score lay at 87-4. Becoming increasingly aware that the game may be slipping away from them, the middle order came out all guns blazing, especially the Tidey brothers and captain Greaves. By the time Greaves departed on 48, he had notched five sixes and taken Reed’s score to 164, a much-needed captain’s innings. With late runs coming courtesy of Karl Ward and Jack Tidey, both scoring 11 quickly accumulated runs, Reed finished on 179-9. Despite at times struggling with Reed’s sloping pitch, Aston Rowant restricted Reed to a potentially below par score. With swathes of fans watching on, Aston Rowant openers Tim Morgan (their captain) and Alex Jewell walked to the middle after tea with the clouds rolling in. With a spring in their step after a fine end to their innings, Reed's bowlers found their rhythm almost immediately. Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey each bowled [...]

Performance of the Round – Sean Tidey

In each round of the 2017 National Village Cup Gunn & Moore sponsor an award for the Performance of the Round. In the Quarter-Finals, the spotlight fell on Reed's victorious visit to Bledlow Village. Sean Tidey and his big brother Jack both made decisive contributions. Taking the new ball, Jack took 5 for 21 as Bledlow were bowled out for 85 chasing 227. However, the organisers, The Cricketer magazine, chose Sean for Performance of the Round. His special knock of 75 runs off 44 deliveries changed the pace of the Reed innings and let them post the competitive total of 227. He then bowled his 8 overs for 20 runs, taking the crucial wicket of Harry Bartlett who had scored 140 in the previous round. This is what Sean had to say about his performance and Reed’s chances in the Semi-Finals. "At this stage of the tournament you have to be backing yourself. We have beaten a few good teams on the way to the semi-final. The chance to play at Lord's again is an additional incentive too. Greavesie (our skipper) pushed me up from number 8 to 5 and gave me instructions to play my shots. I’d like to think the pace of my innings, and partnership with James Heslam put us in control. Later, Jack bowled exceptionally and obviously picking up five wickets in 7 overs put us on top! Reed always takes the NVC seriously as we know that the chance to get to play at Lord’s is one that doesn’t come very often. We won the Cup in 2012 and playing at Lord’s once just makes you want to go back again! We have played in the competition since it began [...]

Bledlow Village Tidey-ed up by Sean & Jack!

Reed 1st XI versus Bledlow Village at Bledlow on Sunday 23rd July 2017. Quarter-Final, National Village Cup. A shadow of gloom descended over the large contingent of travelling Reed supporters when they saw William Heslam and Rob Lankester dismissed early leaving the visitors 17 for 2 in this Quarter-Final match of the National Village Cup. Steadily, Richard Wharton (33) and James Heslam progressed to 69 for 2 at the halfway stage of 20 overs. Bledlow’s opening bowlers, David Pearce (2 for 20) and Matt Pearce (0 for 29) then Mark King in his first spell asked the batsmen probing questions and skipper, Thomas Moore’s field placings were paramount in keeping a tight rein on proceedings. Wharton departed soon after which brought in Sean Tidey at number 5 when the score was 75 for 3. Without any preamble he simply went for his shots and was into double figures within minutes. With each stroke being cheered, the two Reed batsmen pushed the fielders around the compact Buckinghamshire ground which is bordered on one side by the Chinnor & Princes Riseborough Steam Railway at the foot of the Chilterns. Passengers on the slowing steam trains were frequently entertained as Heslam and Tidey built their partnership. Although given a 24-run start, it was Tidey who reached his fifty first and the stand continued to 105 runs when James Heslam was caught and bowled by Hawkes (3 for 38) for a confident 55 which included 2 fours and 2 sixes. By this time, Sean Tidey was into the seventies but he too soon departed after he miscued Goodchild (2 for 21) and presented Moore with a well-taken skyer. Tidey had bludgeoned 5 fours and 6 sixes in his 75 [...]

Cooper and Ward steer Reed into the NVC Quarter-Final

Reed overcame Sussex-based Mayfield in the last 16 of the National Village Cup on Sunday to book themselves a place in the Quarter-Finals, and carry on the dream of replicating their Lord’s success of 2012. In warm conditions and in front of a healthy crowd on ‘the Green’, Reed skipper Tom Greaves won the toss and asked the visitors to bat on a track that had seen over 500 runs scored on it the day before. Toby Fynn (5-1-13-2) and Jack Tidey (5-0-27-0) opened the bowling for Reed and it was Fynn who made crucial early breakthroughs, having both Tagg and Sharma caught behind by Sean Tidey to leave Mayfield in early trouble on 17-2. However a sensible knock by opener Chaplin (47), who was supported by Skinner (24) steadied the ship for the away team. Reed then took pace off of the ball with the introduction of spinners Tom Greaves (8-1-27-1) and Sean Tidey (7-2-23-3) as well as medium-pacers Karl Ward (8-1-29-1) and Mitchell Cooper (7-0-41-1) and this did the trick as Mayfiled lost both set batsmen and began to stutter. Only a knock of 52 from Hyne late-on really looked to take the game away from Reed, but good, tight fielding to back up the excellent bowlers meant Mayfield finished on what seemed a below par 166-8. However, as with the first innings, the batsmen didn’t find scoring easy up front and Reed were soon wobbling on 45-3 as James Heslam (5) was bowled by Sharma, and both Rob Lankester (8) and Chris Jackson (4) were adjudged LBW. Will Heslam (29) had looked in fine form, but when he also departed, soon followed by Smith (13) Reed were 88-5. Tom Greaves (33) looked [...]

Lord’s hopes dashed in last over drama

Cricket Report: National Village Cup Competition. Herts and Beds Final. Lord's hopes dashed as Reed are knocked out of Village Cup in Area Final after last over drama. Reed Cricket Club hosted Langleybury in the area final of The National Village Competition on Sunday June 14th 2015. Reed suffered from injuries and unavailability and gave a number of youngsters a chance to prove their worth in this important game in front of a good crowd. Langleybury won the toss and chose to bat on a damp overcast day on a wicket that had been covered for the past two days. Runs were not easy to come by for Reed and they lost regular wickets after an opening partnership of 43 off eleven overs between James Heslam and Mitchell Cooper. In the next eleven overs Reed lost Cooper, Jackson, Greaves and Smith for 50 runs and looked to be in trouble. However the dangerous Sean Tidey joined James Heslam and scored 25 in a partnership of 28 with Heslam. However with the loss of Tidey and then Heslam for a fine 66 the Reed innings lost momentum and Reed were bowled out in 37.3 overs for 156 leaving Langleybury to chase a target thought to be at least 50 runs below par. Tom Walsingham opened the bowling for Reed and was immediately successful, bowling Manzor for 3 and bowling his first 5 overs for only 8 runs. However, Amin and W.Oxley then settled and took the score to 73 for 1 after 17 overs. A Langleybury victory seemed a formality. Nevertheless, spinners Tom Greaves (9-0-28-1) and Reece Fitzgerald (9-0-29-2) then put the brakes on and Reed looked to be back in the hunt. Karl Ward (6.4-0-25-1) [...]

Jack’s the lad as Reed storm to victory

Sunday saw the anticipated return to action in the Davidstow National Village Cup for Reed. After a bye in the first round, Reed entertained the unknown quantity of Bedfordsire based side, Elstow. James Heslam won the toss and chose to field. This soon seemed like a good decision after Jack Tidey picked up the early wicket of D. Wisson in the 6th over after an athletic catch by Karl Ward. Kallum Ward added some good pace to the attack bowling down the hill and proved to be too good for P. Johnson who departed for 10. 16-2 soon became 16-3 as Jack Tidey comprehensively bowled G.Galsin in the following over for a 13 ball duck. Elstow were in deep trouble and it only got worse for the Village Cup debutants as Kallum Ward (6-2-11-2) picked up the wicket of T Wisson after a sharp catch from Tom Greaves at gully. S.Ahmed tried to lead a revival for his side with some extravagant shots which may have been better suited to baseball. However, his efforts soon came to an abrupt halt as Jack Tidey picked up his 3rd wicket, removing Ahmed for 7. At 26-5 it seemed like one way traffic. Elstow captain M.Stevens strode to the crease with purpose and looked to provide some support for C.Gill (13*) but he too fell, bowled for 1 by the impressive Tidey, who ended with figures of 9-3-11-4. Mitchell Cooper (5-0-12-1) replaced Tidey and bowled with good pace considering the strong wind facing the bowlers who were bowling up the hill. He was soon rewarded when he bowled S. Robson for 6. Spinner and Village Cup final hero, Tom Greaves came into the attack and did not take [...]
