Online event: The Spirit of Cricket with Mike Brearley, 26th August

Join legendary ex-England Cricket Captain Mike Brearley online as he talks about his new book THE SPIRIT OF CRICKET. This is not a Reed CC event, but as cricket enthusiasts you might be interested to know about it. To book a ticket, go to spiritofcricket.eventbrite.co.uk and follow the instructions. This event is organised by our friends at Heffers Bookshop, 20, Trinity Street, Cambridge, CB2 1TY, telephone 01223 463200. PGB ************************************************************************* About this Event. The laws of cricket, like the laws of the land, aim at a sort of justice or balancing between different factions. The purpose behind cricket's laws, and behind changes in them, is often to calibrate the balance in the game between batsmen and bowlers, between attack and defence, between safety and risk. Cricketing lawmakers are interested in the overall appeal of the game to players and spectators alike. Join Mike Brearley as he talks about The Spirit of Cricket, his new book which considers issues across the game such as 'Mankading', the Australian ball-tampering scandal, intimidatory bowling, sledging and mental disintegration - as well as the notion of the spirit of the game for umpires, groundsmen, administrators, media and spectators - as well, of course, as for players. Mike Brearley OBE was educated at Cambridge, where he read classics and moral sciences, and captained the university. He played for Middlesex County Cricket Club intermittently from 1961 to 1983, captaining the side from 1971 to 1982. He first played for England in 1976 and captained the side from 1977 to 1980, winning seventeen test matches and losing only four. He was recalled to the captaincy in 1981 for the Ashes home series, leading England to one of their most famous victories. Since retiring [...]

Wednesday evenings at the Clubhouse + Indoor net dates (Seniors and Colts)

A reminder that Reed CC’s Howard Marshall Pavilion is open for business every Wednesday evening from 1930hrs onwards in the winter months. Come and have a chat, put the world to rights, watch soccer on the TV, throw a dart or two (or three!), play pool, cards or table skittles or simply enjoy the comfortable surroundings in the lounge bar. Bottled beers, lagers and ciders are on sale at “winter prices” (meaning cheaper than normal); plus soft drinks and nibbles such as crisps and peanuts, some, (I am reliably informed), at even further reduced prices. Every Wednesday evening through to April – when the cricket should begin outdoors with some friendlies (and beer prices go up)! Fixtures have been added to the website calendar. The dates of the Village Cup Rounds are also included although the draw is not expected to take place until mid-February. Click on “View All Events” on the right of this homepage on the RCC website then choose the months you want to look at. Friendlies will begin on 18th April, Reed host a Group Final of the Herts T20 on 2nd May, the 1st Round of the Village Cup is on 3rd May, then the Herts League commences on Saturday the 9th May. The league season will end on 5th September. Before all that, there are Indoor Nets for senior players, (i.e., 16 years and older), at Burloes Farm, Royston on every Sunday in March (1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th) plus two sessions at Melbourn Village College on Mondays 16th and 30th March - see the "Events" for times. A fee of £5 per person per session will be charged. For Under 12 and Non-County Under 15 Colts, there [...]

RCC September Quiz, Friday the 27th

Please take note that the Quiz Night in September will be on Friday the 27th, NOT the 28th as published in the 2019 Fixture Card. We changed it to avoid a clash with another event being held in the village. 7:30 p.m. for a prompt 8:00 p.m. start. Please register your interest by contacting Sam Greaves on Mobile 07950 644861 or Tom Greaves on 07787 243915. =============================================================================== Nothing to do with the Quiz, but just a little brain-teaser for you to ponder. Tom Greaves has appeared in three National Village Cup Finals. What is his batting average at Lord’s Cricket Ground? No prizes, but if you want to know, email me and I’ll tell you. PGB Peter G. Baker, Honorary Secretary, Reed Cricket Club.

The Cricketer Village Cup Final – News: Updated to 14/9/19

UPDATED: 14/9/19 For those of you unable to go to Lord’s for The Cricketer National Village Cup Final tomorrow, you may be interested to know that MCC will be providing live audio ball-by-ball commentary of the match. http://player.broadcastradio.com/lords-cricket-ground Also, BBC London is keen to film at Lord’s on Sunday and follow Reed’s day too. If you didn’t manage to hear Tom Greaves on BBC Three Counties Radio yesterday morning, the programme remains on SOUNDS on the BBC website. Search for the Andy Collins show and his interview with Tom begins at 1 hour 39 minutes and 32 seconds from the start of the programme. Similarly, Tom and Jack Tidey were interviewed on BBC Look East (West) in a three-minute segment of the programme filmed at Reed last night. That can be found on BBC iPlayer at 21 minutes and 48 seconds into the show. Make sure it is the Look East (WEST) programme. Where I live, I get Look East (EAST) and had to watch stock car racing from King’s Lynn instead! It indicates that this programme is available only until 1900hrs on Saturday the 14th September, so if you wanted to watch or download it, don’t delay doing so. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ UPDATED: 13/9/19 - LISTEN OUT FOR REED CAPTAIN, TOM GREAVES, BEING INTERVIEWED ON BBC THREE COUNTIES RADIO, 95.5FM, 103.8FM, DIGITAL, AT ABOUT 0730HRS THIS MORNING (FRIDAY THE 13TH). - I HAVE BEEN ASSURED BY THE ORGANISERS THAT THE BARS AND REFRESHMENT OUTLETS IN LORD’S WILL ACCEPT BOTH CASH AND CARD PAYMENTS ON SUNDAY. - THERE IS NO THOROUGHFARE BETWEEN THE MAIN GROUND AND THE NURSERY GROUND BECAUSE OF THE BUILDING WORKS.
