Reed nearly pull off a miraculous victory over Hoddesdon

It was a case of finger nails being bitten to the quick in this match at The Green on Saturday. Hoddesdon won the toss and put the home team into bat. Reed found runs hard to come by on a slow pitch. Ed Wharton was the first wicket to fall bowled in the 7th over with the score on 12. The accurate bowling of the visitors continued to dry up the Reed scoring but any further wickets had to wait to the 17th over when Will Heslam fell with the score on 42. Wickets then fell regularly for the hosts and with James Heslam's dismissal, Reed were 81 for 5 with just over 12 overs left. Enter Mitchell Cooper who took an immediate liking to the Hoddesdon spinners, he hit 54 in 50 balls with 4 fours and four sixes in a 63-run partnership with Rich Wharton which brought a measure of respectability to Reed’s final score of 151 for 7 off their 45 overs. Hoddesdon set off quickly in their reply reaching 59 for 1 in their first ten overs. Toby Fynn (9-0-44-1) taking the wicket of Hoddesdon skipper Walters. A partnership of 54 between Broodryk and Clarke was eventually broken by Karl Ward (9-1-33-3), and within four overs the match had been changed as the visitors fell to 88 for 5. Skipper Tom Greaves (9-1-32-4) extracted turn and bounce on the now drying pitch. The collapse continued and Hoddesdon had fallen to 128 for 9. Reed sensed a marvellous victory. It was the visitors now finding runs hard to come by. Sean Tidey (6-0-9-0) passing the edge of the bat on numerous occasions. The pressure was palpable. Eventually after fifteen overs of knife [...]

Colts Round-up

In those first early months of the 2020 season when the weather was mostly hot and sunny, we were not allowed to play any form of cricket. Slowly, restrictions relaxed and net practices began for the Under 15s then extended to the younger age groups and included fielding drills. Co-ordinated by Richard Barlow, he and the Coaches supervised these sessions under strict guidelines and the youngsters were seen on The Green practising and developing skills. Usually the Colts’ Fixtures would be completed by the end of the school term in late-July. This year, it was then that the Government gave the green light for matches to be played. With thanks to Reed’s Colts Liaison Officer, Hannah Heslam, she hastily arranged a small fixture list for each age-group with like-minded clubs who wished to provide some competitive games for the children who had been frustrated by not being permitted to play. It was also then that the weather decided to change and some of those games have fallen foul of the rain including both Under 9 matches. The Under 9 team managed by Simon Jackson is scheduled to play tonight (1st September) against Hitchin U9s at Reed whilst both the U10s (versus Bishop’s Stortford) and U15s (v. Bedford) are playing away this evening. The U12s have a match at home against St Margaretsbury on Friday the 4th and the U10s are away to Hemel Hempstead next Sunday morning. Here are some match summaries of the games played so far contributed by the Team Managers, James Heslam (U10), Lee Vincent (U12) and Ian Osborne (U15). —————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————- 3rd August. Rescue act in Radlett in vain

Reed travelled to Radlett for their latest match in the Premier Division of the Saracens Herts. League. Losing the toss on a day that looked more like one from March than late-August, Reed were asked to take first knock. The raw pace of Sanghera plus the left arm over of 15 year old Noah Cornwell kept runs at a premium in the early overs. Ed Wharton was the first to fall caught at deep mid-on for just 8. Will Heslam, Reed’s hero last week was struck on the helmet by a Sanghera bouncer and fell soon after for 4. Wickets fell regularly and Reed were teetering at 43 for 6 in just the 14th Over. Mitchell Cooper and Sean Tidey set about rebuilding the innings. They punished anything loose and short and pushed the score over 100, with the first batting point in sight, Tidey was stumped off the bowling of Josh De Caires, the son of former England Captain Michael Atherton, for 28. Cooper continued on, striking 6 fours and 3 sixes before edging behind for 48 off 61 balls. Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn added 15 for the last wicket as Reed were dismissed for 145 in the 37th Over. A more than respectable recovery from the position they were in earlier! With Jack Tidey unable to bowl, Reed opened their attack with Ed Wharton (9-2-29-2) and Toby Fynn. Wharton soon struck taking the edge of Chatfield’s bat for a great catch behind by Sean Tidey with the score on 11. Wharton’s good lines and bounce soon snaffled a second wicket, De Caires for 21, and at 34-2, Reed were back in the match. Crawford and Arul responded to the Reed bowlers and [...]

Heslam serves up a tasty main course against Welwyn Garden City

Reed nearly pulled off the result of the season as they fell just seven runs short against Welwyn Garden City. Winning the toss, Reed inserted their hosts on a blustery day and were soon rewarded when Jack Tidey trapped former England International Owais Shah for just 4 with the score on 5. However, Tidey limped off injured after bowling just 4.3 overs. Welwyn Garden set about rebuilding with Champion and Nijar, they had completed their 50-run partnership, when Matt Giblin (8-0-38-1) took the edge of Champion’s bat for Sean Tidey to take the catch behind the stumps. Nijar soon followed as Will Heslam pouched a catch off skipper Tom Greaves (8-0-53-2). Welwyn Garden skipper Blacktopp and Rizvi built a solid partnership taking the score over 100, before Toby Fynn picked up two quick wickets (127 for 5). Rizvi shared partnerships with Nolan and Shay Emerton, Fynn picking up his 3rd wicket (9-1-29-3) with Nolan’s dismissal. Rob Lankester was instrumental in bringing Welwyn Garden’s innings to a close taking 3 for 13 in just 3 overs with his medium pace, including the prize wicket of Rizvi for 61. Sean Tidey had a good day returning behind the stumps with two catches and a stumping. Welwyn Garden were all out for 227 off exactly 45 overs. Reed’s opening pair of Ed Wharton and Will Heslam set off at a reasonable pace in reply. They punished any bad bowling and cleared the boundary on several occasions particularly Wharton with 2 fours and 2 sixes in his 29 before he fell with the score on 48. Wickets then began to fall regularly and at 88 for 4 Reed were wobbling. Will Heslam still remained patiently accumulating runs. A solid [...]

Under 12s play their first games

Reed's Under 12s played their first game in a friendly against Broxbourne on Monday. With this being the first game of the season and the first ever game for many of the Reed players, the bowling and batting duties would be spread among the experienced and new players to keep everyone involved. Broxbourne batted first and their opening pairing put on 44 for the first wicket. Despite some very tight bowling from Callum Ricketts, Broxbourne scored 85 runs for the second wicket before Tom Green removed 3 for just 5 runs in his second spell, ending with figures of 3 for 14 off 4 overs. Broxbourne finished on 141 for 4 off their 20 overs. Pick of the Batsmen: M Hannington 26 (retired) D Stark 25 (retired) Pick of the Bowling: Tom Green 3 for 14 off 4 overs, Stanley Johnson 1 for 16 off 2, Callum Ricketts 0 for 8 off 3. Reed went into bat requiring 142. This was always going to be a tough target to chase with inexperienced and young (a number of the batsmen are U11 players) and the economical bowling meant that once the more experienced batsmen were out, runs were difficult to come by. Broxbourne were particularly efficient in the field, limiting the number of singles to be had. Reed reached 89 all out in the 20th over. Pick of the Batsmen Callum Ricketts - 15, Daniel Vincent - 14. Some glimpses of talent from a number of newcomers.... Aaron Nash and Stanley Johnson following in their respective fathers' footsteps with some big hitting..... The return fixture is next Tuesday on The Green at Reed. Match Report submitted by Lee Vincent. On Wednesday the 12th, Reed travelled to [...]

Reed earn their first Premier League win in great style

Reed travelled down the A1 to face North Mymms in their latest League encounter. Losing the toss, Reed were put into the field on a sultry day. Opening bowlers Ed Wharton and Jack Tidey bowled excellent lines to keep the scoring down. Tidey (9-4-9-1) snared the first wicket in the eighth over caught at mid-on by Jack Caine with the score on 19 for 1. Wharton (9-0-28-1) was soon in on the act with a great slip catch from Sean Tidey (24 for 2). The runs dried up as both bowlers bowled right through their allowance of nine overs. Sean Tidey came into the attack and took a wicket in his first over (39 for 3), both Tidey and Mitchell Cooper (5-0-26-3) turned the screw even more leaving the hosts on 64 for 7, with less than 19 overs of their innings left. Captain Wynne and Owen Millard doubled the score, before Sean Tidey (9-0-39-3) took his third wicket. Two wickets from Matt Giblin (7.2-0-25-2) wrapped up the tail. The home side all out for 152 in the last over. Brothers Ed and Richard Wharton opened Reed’s reply and hit 22 inside three overs before Richard was adjudged lbw, the first of skipper Wynne’s five wickets (9-0-43-5). Will Heslam came in and continued the brisk start. Ed Wharton then became the first of three wickets to fall on 37. Heslam and Jack Caine set about restoring the innings, Heslam fell to a catch at mid-wicket (56 for 5). Stuart Smith joined Caine and played an anchor role as Caine reached 31 before also being adjudged lbw. This left Mitchell Cooper 41 not out (in 33 balls) to join Smith 24 not out and they continued [...]

Reed fall just short despite a Tidey performance

Reed entertained Potters Bar at The Green in their latest Premier League match. Winning the toss, Reed put their opponents in. They didn’t have to wait long for the first wicket when Palmer was bowled offering no shot to Jack Tidey. Hussain became Tidey’s second wicket edging to keeper Rich Wharton with the score on 31 and when Ed Wharton added the wicket of Patel with a superb catch at midwicket by skipper Rob Lankester, the visitors were struggling at 44-3. Pat Scott completed his 50 for the visitors but fell to Tidey two balls later, his brother Charlie fell first ball and the quick bowler completed his 5-wicket haul when Wijesuriya fell playing on, Potters Bar were 89 for 6. The opposition’s overseas player Miguel Nunes-Macahado came to the wicket and began to build Potters Bar recovery, despite losing James Scott with the score at 112, he shared a 57 run partnership with Chapman as they took the score beyond 200. He eventually went for 105 in just 83 balls. Potters Bar were eventually dismissed for 242 in over 43. Tidey’s figures of 9-2-37-5 the stand-out of the Reed bowling attack, the ground fielding too was out of the top drawer. Reed began their reply with two lofty blows by Ed Wharton before he was caught at point. Brother Richard and skipper Lankester batted sensibly punishing anything loose. The 50 partnership came up off of 82 balls. Lankester eventually fell for 31, James Heslam went lbw with the score on 82 for 3 with 20 overs already gone. Jack Caine made 21 before being stumped, meanwhile Wharton reached his 50 before falling for 56 (143 for 6), Mitchell Cooper 27 (25 balls) and Sean [...]

REED EDGED IN VILLAGE CUP THRILLER!

Reed fell just short in an entertaining Village Cup match at The Green on Sunday. Due to Reed's promotion to the Herts Premier League, no first team players could be selected for this year's competition despite Reed being the defending champions. Having won the toss skipper Ed Garrott put the visitors into bat. Redbourn set off at a good pace punishing anything loose from the opening bowlers Julien Fynn (7-0-41-3) and Rupert Martin (6-0-34-0). Fynn trapped Ed Hales lbw for 32 (52-1). Cutler and Will Hales then set a 109 partnership which threatened to take the game away from Reed. A great piece of fielding from Garrott eventually ran out Hales. Another 50 run partnership was broken by Karl Ward (8-0-37-2) . A flurry of late wickets left Redbourn on 237-7 at the end of their 40 overs. Reed set about the chase against the young Redbourn opening attack steadily, Rob Willoughby was the first to fall with the score on 28, Rich Barlow soon followed for 18. When skipper Garrott and then Michael Robertson fell, Reed were wobbling at 71-4. Ward and Scott Nash now began to up the run rate, Ward fell for 42, Fynn now joined Nash and they brought Reed back into the contest with a 57 partnership. Nash fell trying to hit his third consecutive six. Fynn continued with some great shots before falling for 35. Reed now needed more than ten an over. An unbeaten 23 from MJE Baker with help from both Martin and Matt Bowles left Reed just 28 runs short of their target. RESULT: REDBOURN 237 for 7 in 40 Overs beat REED 209 for 8 in 40 Overs by 28 runs. Match Report submitted by [...]

Rain frustrates Reed First’s victory push after great bowling performance.

The unpredictable British weather put pay to any hope of Reed forcing a victory away at Hertford after a marvellous all round bowling display. Having won the toss and putting their hosts into bat, Hertford reached 28 before Ed Wharton (6-3-30-1) trapped Wray lbw for 14, Jack Tidey (9-1-27-3) added fellow opener Riddle soon after and Hertford were only 34-2. Mitchell Cooper provided an eventful first over conceding 3 runs off his first two balls and then providing a catch to wicket keeper Rich Wharton, before pinning Lawrence lbw with the next delivery, skipper Cowell was almost the hatrick victim as the umpire turned down the shout for another lbw. He soon fell to Jack Tidey and at 48-5 the county town side was struggling. The Reed bowlers continued to turn the screw with Sean Tidey (9-0-36-1) and Toby Fynn (7-0-28-2) also getting in on the act and Hertford were staring down the barrel at 89-8. A much needed 56 partnership for the ninth wicket between Leather (42) and Underdown (30) gave the Hertford score respectability. Fynn and Cooper (5.2-0-38-3) came back to take the last two wickets dismissing Hertford for 149 inside 37 overs just as the drizzle arrived. The rain got steadily heavier during the tea break and the game was eventually called off by the umpires with Reed unable to begin their reply. Both sides pick up 10 points for the No Result. Match Report submitted by Neil Haslam.
