Thirds collapse against Hoddesdon

Reed III’s headed to the idyllic Roydon Cricket club to face Hoddesdon IV. On winning the toss, Reed opted to bowl, hoping to use the good weather to their advantage. Joe Graves (9-3-18-4) opened up down the hill, with Ian Roberts (3-1-11-0) starting off at the other end. The Hoddesdon openers Savanhu (13) and Brooks (17) began aggressively picking up some early runs. Having bowled just 3 overs, Roberts succumbed to a knee industry, with Neil Haslam (9-2-24-0) replacing him from the pavilion end. Graves became the first bowler to strike, cleaning up Savanhu. Graves continued his relentless attack, clean bowling Hunt (8), Brown (0) and Harrison (1). Hoddesdon lost another wicket when Brookes failed to make ground and was run out by Mike Robertson. Despite being 45-5, the home side refused to collapse, with Welsby (25) and Maughan (10) stabilising the innings. The introduction of Mike Juckes to the attack immediately reaped reward when Maughan was caught by Graves. The biggest stand of the innings then proceeded, as Welsby continued stoically, while Draisey (30) looked to further build the total. As the innings drew on Matt Yates (9-2-32-2) and Jukes began to pick up wickets, with Graves catching Welsby off the bowling of Yates, then Juckes picking up his second wicket with Draisey caught behind by Bill Mansfield. Yates snagged Cowner (16) with a caught and bowled, with Jukes taking the final wicket of Osbourne (1). Hoddesdon all out for 161, having made a sterling recovery. Stoke stroked out!

Reed played host to Buckinghamshire Champions Stoke Green on Sunday at the Green in the last 32 of the National Village Cup knock-out competition. In front of a good crowd, Reed skipper Tom Greaves won the toss and elected to field. Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey opened the bowling for the home side, and it couldn’t have got off to a better start, Fynn having opener Parmar well caught by Greaves for a duck from the 3rd ball of the day. This set the tone for the innings with a superb bowling and fielding display from the two-time champions. Stoke Green were reduced to 18 for 5 once Tidey (8-1-18-1) and Fynn (8-1-16-4) had bowled out. Reed allrounder Mitchell Cooper was introduced to the attack along with Greaves and although they looked to be troubling the batsman, the Stoke Green middle order rebuilt well. Having got to 57 for 5 Greaves struck but again the Stoke Green middle order rebuilt, Ghumann in particular batted beautifully as he passed 50. This left it to Reed's second change pair of Sean Tidey (2.5-0-17-3) and Jack Caine (3-0-22-1) to mop up the tail and bowl Stoke Green out for 141. A score that looked well under par on a decent batting wicket at the Green. After a very enjoyable Tea, Reed openers Sean Tidey and Richard Wharton set about knocking the runs off. Sean in particular, looked in a very aggressive mood and almost in the blink of an eye was passed his 50, with a mix of classy strokes and lusty blows, meanwhile Wharton was knocking the ball around nicely in typical fashion. The Whartons dominate Dunstable

Reed continued their league form with a comfortable 7 wicket win, albeit against a Dunstable side severely weakened by a stag party. Having inserted their hosts, the Reed bowlers kept a tight hold on their top order, restricting them to 119-5 from 50 overs. This was especially due to the remarkable 20 over spell by Jack Tidey, who bowled unchanged and finished with six maidens after lunch. His final figures read 20-10-32-2. However they could not dismiss Brad Matthews, twice putting him down, and they were made to rue those misses as he opened his shoulders in the last 10 overs, scoring an undefeated 91 in Dunstable's 198 for 6, Ed Wharton and Zac McGuigan were the other wicket takers with run-outs from the latter and Jack Caine. Fearing another destructive spell from Luke Cherry, Reed's habitual nemesis, Ed Wharton decided attack was the order of the day and promptly smashed him out of the attack. Indeed he conceded an unprecedented 46 from his first 7 overs. With his brother, Richard (31) at the other end, the Whartons added 116 runs in 18 overs until both were bowled in successive overs, Ed frustratingly dismissed for 94 - the second time he had just missed a century this season. A more measured partnership of 71 between Jack Caine (38 not out) and James Heslam (19 not out) ensued, safely steering Reed to 200 for 3. Super cool Ollie see Reed U9 (2) to first ever win

After suffering three straight defeats the ever improving under 9B team won their first ever game in an epic finish at Reed against Braughing. Ollie and Luke set the pace with energetic running whilst Henry top scored with a hard hitting 11. But importantly Ollie, Luke, Atharva, Daniel and Matthew did not get out in a very respectable 265-5. Excluding four separate overthrows in an all run seven Reed bowled and fielded exceptionally well. Catches were caught by Henry, Matthew and Luke whilst Ollie and Atharva both got two wickets. Matthew, Henry, Daniel and Luke also took a wicket and got four run outs by Daniel (2), Matthew and Ollie. The match came down to the final over with Braughing needing 8 to win and with the super cool Ollie bowling, he took an important wicket to win the game for Reed. Jackson steps in to see Under 9s to 4 in 4

Reed Under 9s (1) made it 4 wins out of 4 after they squeezed over the line against Sawbridgeworth at the Green on Friday. Reed captain Josh Heslam won the toss and elected to bowl and with the opposition on 230 after 12 of their 16 overs everything looked good for the young Reed side. However an impressive last wicket Sawbridgeworth stand set a competitive 258 for Reed to win. Reed wicket-takers were Josh and Eddie Heslam, Jon Green, Luke Wilson and Oliver Walters. This total looked particularly challenging for Reed to win when after the first pair they were only at 201. However Josh (24) and Eddie Heslam (6) had other ideas and quickly changed the momentum of the game progressing Reed to 233. Luke Wilson and Hugh Hollamby edged the hosts closer but at 245 going into the final pairing the game was in the balance. Step forward Matthew Jackson (17) who took a last minute call after the rain caused selection confusion to arrive part way through the first innings to then deliver the decisive blows hitting 4 boundaries in the final pairing with Oliver Walters to see Reed home and complete an enjoyable and exciting game in style. 3s win in the final over

Reed IIIs hosted top of the table Bushey III’s at Freman College. Despite a week of wet weather, the pitch was in reasonable condition and Bushey, winning the toss, elected to bat. Openers Ganesh (46) and Akbar (18 ) started well seeing off opening bowlers Owen Hughes (9-1-45-0) and Keiran McKinna (6-0-16-0) while building a solid foundation for the innings. The introduction of Ian Roberts to the attack brought Reed some relief when Akbar was bowled for 18. Toby Emes (9-0-50-3) also began to build pressure, getting good seam movement and picking up the wicket of Feasel (7). Roberts then ended the well measured innings of Ganesh, trapping him LBW. The wickets continued as Emes once again struck, bowling Vidal (5) and Adam (0). Bushey looked in trouble, however Aanir Hussain (38) showed patience while Amir (53) repeatedly thrashed the ball to all parts of the ground. With the total rising quickly, Reed’s captain Rhodri Hughes turned to Rob Willoughby (7-0-40-1) whose flighty bowling drew Amir down the wicket, giving Lloyd Bowman and easy stumping. In the final overs of the innings, Mike Robertson (5-1-26-1) bowled Hussain, leaving Biplab (13 not out) and Hassan (2 not out) to finish the innings for the visitors. The respectable score of 207-7 from 45 overs looked to be a challenge for Reed. Paul Garrott (24) and Richard Johnson (4) started the innings for Reed, facing some hostile bowling from Hussain (9-0-39-3) and tight lines from Sohail (9-0-35-1). Hussain struck first, getting Johnson LBW with the score on only 19. Willoughby (31) and Garrott proceeded to stabilise the innings until Garrott was caught off the bowling of Feasel (9-0-42-2). Reed 1sts meet their match in Nissen

Reed were blown away by Australian-born paceman, Kris Nissen, who finished with figures of 17-8-33-6. However even these did not reflect his dominance as 4 of his victims were clean bowled by fast swinging yorkers. Only 3 Reed batsmen reached double figures with Zac McGuigan and Tom Greaves top scoring with 20 apiece. As a result the hosts managed just 106 in 37 overs. All this was in contrast to the start of the match when Ed Wharton (1 for 8) and Jack Tidey (2 for 6) reduced Shenley Village to 5 for 3 on a rain affected wicket. Yet it was Nissen again who thwarted the bowlers scoring a stylish 44 in spite of the conditions. Tom Greaves kept chipping away though, taking 4 for 58 and their opponents struggled to 138 for 9 from their 60 overs, but it proved to be plenty in the end. U9s make it 3 in 3

Reed U9s 1 made it 3 wins out of 3 with a convincing victory over Braughing on Friday evening after the grounds staff (and willing parents!) did a fantastic job to fit the game in around the British summertime weather! Reed 1 again lost the toss and were asked to bat. Ethan Fox (19) and Rory Longland (27) again did a fantastic job setting the tone for the innings scoring freely, which when backed up by Josh (22) and Eddie Heslam (10) saw Reed well on their way to a big score. The hosts ended up on 329 with others chipping in along the way. In reply Braughing were always up against it particularly facing the strong Reed 1 bowling line up and they finished up on 233 with wickets coming from Josh Heslam (2), Rory Longland, Hugh Hollamby and Harrison and everyone else bowling very tightly. The benefits of the Reed team playing a season of Under 9s cricket at the ages of 6 - 7 clearly paying off as they are currently competing strongly still a year or more below the age group. Reed Press-on after Preston

Reed 1st XI versus Preston 1st XI. Regional Final, (Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Group), National Village Cup, 2019. Reed made short work of the Beds & Herts Regional Final by bowling out Preston for 104 in the 36th over then cracking 105 for 2 within 15 overs. Initially, Preston got off to a good start thanks to some powerful drives by James Stevens (23), but once he was snaffled by a diving Rob Lankester at backward point off Jack Tidey’s bowling, the visitors lost regular wickets although number 4, Morecroft put up some resistance with 27. Toby Fynn and the elder Tidey bowled a good line and length and this combined with some excellent ground fielding, put Preston under pressure. Tom Greaves and Mitchell Copper replaced them and snared 2 wickets each then Sean Tidey contributed another. Meanwhile, Jack Caine came on from the other end and cleaned up the tail taking an excellent 4 for 13. Reed’s openers got the innings off to a flying start with Richard Wharton hitting the first delivery, (which was a No Ball), for a six! Even though he fell soon after, Reed were without mercy as the belligerent Sean Tidey scored an array of shots round the Green in his 65. Rob Lankester was 27 not out when Reed overhauled Preston’s total with 8 wickets in hand. Stoke Green CC won the Buckinghamshire Final and will be Reed’s next opponents in the 5th Round. Cooper bombs Reed to victory

Reed 2s got back to winning ways after beating Stevenage 2s in a high scoring, rain reduced game at The Green, owing a significant debt to groundsman Richard Robertson in the process for working wonders to get the game on. Reed skipper Ed Garrott lost the toss and his side were asked to bat in a reduced 40 overs per side game. They lost Richard Barlow early, and despite some lovely shots, Richard Johnson also fell for 28 to leave Reed 57 for 2. Chris Jackson (27) and James Sandford (42) both batted well for Reed and took the score to 130 for 4 before Garrott and Rob Willoughby (16) then set about upping the pace. Garrott batted sublimely as he reached an unbeaten 50 as the score progressed towards 200. However the Reed innings got its real injection of pace when Mitchell Cooper came to the crease. He hit a swashbuckling 56 not out off of just 20 balls, including 6 "maximums". Cooper’s assault was brutal and gave Reed a daunting total of 248 for 4 in their 40 overs. Cooper (5-0-21-1) then took the new ball and snared an early Stevenage wicket, but the visitors continued to play their shots and kept up well with the rate. The introduction of Alex Kelly (8-1-49-2) did get Reed a couple of crucial breakthroughs but Stevenage continued to amass runs as they progressed towards 150. However the spin of Garrott (6-1-30-1) and Matt Bowles (7-0-32-2) and an excellent Richard Barlow run out was the key to halting the progress of Stevenage as they eventually fell 36 runs short, on 212 for 8.
