2019 Match Reports

Closer than you would think!

Week 10 of the League season was the start of the return matches. In week 1 on the Freman Oval, Frogmore had been dismissed for 41 and a relatively strong Reed Third team had won by 10 wickets. This time, Frogmore showed much more steel as they reached a more imposing 192 for 9 in their 45 overs. Tony Albon was the backbone of the innings with 84 not out. Steve Hughes and Matt Yates had taken 2 wickets each before Mike Robertson, showing more control, bagged 3 for 29 in 7 overs. There was even time for PG Baker to add a wicket to his tally in his first spell of bowling in a League match for 4 seasons. Without last week’s centurion, Richard Johnson, (promoted), and his fellow opener, Rob Willoughby, (unavailable), who between them had accrued almost 160 runs, the Reed innings began with Paul Garrott and Baker and they scored almost 13 runs (well, 12 actually)! Stepping-up once more was Mike Robertson at number 3 who in partnership with Rhodri Hughes, (23), put-on 109 for the third wicket. The momentum was with Reed and Jon Braine (5) supported Robertson by adding a further 36 together. But at 164 with still another 29 required both fell, Robertson immediately after reaching his second century of the season. There followed a period of 8 overs when only 9 runs were scored and one more wicket lost. Reed were definitely under pressure. Then inexplicably, Readings who at that stage had figures of 0 for 13 off 6 overs (including three maidens), bowled a wide then two high full-tosses (both hit to the boundary by Joe Graves) and conceded another four and Reed were almost home [...]

Under 13 round-up

Some recent matches involving the Reed Under 13 team did not go in our favour. The Under 13s made 94 for 4 in response to Cambridge St Giles’s 126 for 3 in the CYCA Cup. Oliver Keenan and Sam Osborne took 1 wicket each, (with one being a catch by Charlie Walters) and the other dismissal was a run out by James Mitchell. Back in the League against St Giles, Reed under-performed this time managing only 61 all out whilst St Giles had reached 123 for 5, William Green 2 for 1, Charlie Butler 2 for 9 and Alfie Cockburn 1 for 13, being the wicket takers. The Under 13s scored 58 for 8 against Coton, Charlie Butler (16) and Olu Agboola (19) were the top scorers. However, Coton’s innings ended on 115 for 6, William Archer taking 2 for 15 and Olu, Matthew Liebenberg, William Green and Alfie Cockburn all 1 each. In the two fixtures against Saffron Walden, Reed were in distant second place both times. On the Green, Saffron Walden scored 107 for 8, wickets falling to William Green (2 for 14), and one each for Charlie Walters, Archie McIntosh, Alfie Cockburn, Jacob Vincent and Matthew Liebenberg. But Reed were bowled out for only 38 in reply. A week later in the away match, Saffron Walden piled up 158 for 5, wickets for Charlie Walters, Charlie Butler and Alfie Cockburn plus a Butler run out. Reed’s response was led by Alfie Cockburn with 22, but closed on 62 for 8. On Monday, St Giles had a 10-wicket victory when Reed were bowled out for 80 despite a fighting 38 from Archie McIntosh. Reed were the greatest showmen at Ampthill!

Although unbeaten as captain of the second team, Ed Garrott is yet to win a toss as skipper, and consequently Ampthill elected to bat first. Opening up for Reed were Karl Ward and Matt Giblin. The Ampthill openers started up well, and quite quickly reached 31 without loss. Giblin then with a ball, somewhere in the fine boundary between a long hop and a bouncer, surprised the Ampthill opener who skied the ball, which was well caught at point by Paul Garrott. Giblin shortly after claimed the second opener, caught, to swing the game back in Reed’s favour. From this point on, the game remained firmly in Reed’s control, with Ward unlucky not to have been rewarded for his efforts opening up. Spin twins Matt Bowles, and soon after, Ed Garrott replaced the opening attack, and further applied the pressure to Ampthill. Appropriate was the ‘Greatest Showman’ soundtrack being heard from the neighbouring Ampthill Festival, as both spinners rattled through their overs, and the Ampthill batting line up. Aided by some top-level catching from Chris Jackson at slip, both claimed 3 wickets a piece. 2 late runs outs left the hosts all out for 97, with just 32 overs bowled. Promoted from the 3rds after his recent good form, Paul Garrott certainly didn’t look out of place leading the Reed response with Richard Barlow. Both batted freely, continuing their recent form to add 60 for the first wicket. When Garrott fell bowled for 22, it was left to Jackson and Barlow to finish the game off, playing some fine shots to reach the target in the 19th over. Match Report submitted by Matt Giblin.

Big Jack bags six!

Reed welcomed Kent champions, Borstal, in the sixth round of the National Village Cup on Sunday. Batting first after losing the toss, Borstal's openers were quickly into their stride and were 34 in the sixth over with James Whitnell looking particularly threatening on 25 exhibiting some handsome drives. But it was Jack Tidey bowling uphill who struck by having Pound caught behind for 10 then Thomas Tingley clean bowled next ball for 0. Daniel Tingley followed in Tidey's next over, again caught by wicket keeper Richard Wharton for 1. Wharton went on to take three more catches, one a spectacular left handed take down the leg side off Tidey. His other catches being off Toby Fynn and Tom Greaves. By the time Jack Tidey finished his eight-over spell his figures were 6 for 21 ensuring that Borstal were beyond rescue. Mortimore had a bit of a dart at Mitchell Cooper's bowling but perished for 20 caught by Jack Caine to give Greaves his second wicket, (2 for 14), and Cooper adding a wicket of his own. Borstal all out for 83 in the 23rd over. Although aiming at a small target, Reed did not have it all their own way when both Wharton and Sean Tidey were back in hutch with only 20 on the board. Rob Lankester and James Heslam batted sensibly until Lankester failed to execute a reverse sweep and was bowled for 30 when the Reed score was on 54. Stuart Smith joined Heslam and they drew closer to the Borstal total, but with only 3 required, Smith mistimed a lofted drive and was caught at mid-on for 15. Broodryk century defeats Reed 1sts

A century partnership between South African Jayden Broodryk (105 not out) and Todd Sturdy (54) turned the game Hoddesdon's way after they lost their first 3 wickets for just 12 runs. On a dry wicket which encouraged movement and spin, they were the only batsmen to really play themselves in, although they survived a number of close calls and several half chances. After Ed Wharton (1-19) and Jack Tidey (2-34) made those early breakthroughs, Reed were frustrated and even spin twins Tom Greaves and Sean Tidey could only muster a wicket apiece as their opposition raced to their target at 5 runs an over. Having won the toss, Reed struggled on the surface to match their customary scoring rate, despite Ed Wharton's flamboyant 39. Hoddesdon's bowlers: Bill Thorne (2-44), James Curtis (4-63) from 20 overs apiece and Harry Mason with 2-24 made them have to work for their runs and wickets fell at regular intervals. At lunch. on 94-6, a low total was on the cards, but a gritty 37 by Richard Wharton and more fluent 24 by Jack Caine gave the innings respectability. However, the unbeaten last wicket partnership of 40 between Jack Tidey (39 not out) and Toby Fynn (11 not out) took the score to 188-9, making Reed more hopeful at the break. Broodryk's imperious century denied them and with Shenley Village losing, it took Hoddesdon back to the top of the table. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Reed Under 9s IIs unbeaten run continues

Reed were at home to Sawbridgeworth on Monday evening. Batting first Ollie and Luke batted solidly against Sawbridgeworth’s strongest bowlers, before Effie and Lily (who hit a great 4) followed up. Matthew and Lenny batted next and where the only pair not to get out. And then the hard-hitting Henry and Atharva finished off the innings where Reed scored 227-9. Henry top scored with 11, Ollie got 7 and Matthew 6. After an inspirational TeamTalk from captain Luke, Reed bowled tight and straight. Pick of the bowlers was Effie taking 4-5, Lily 2-1 (including a maiden) and Atharva 1-13. It got very tight and Sawbo needed 2 to win off the last two overs and in the penultimate over Luke bowled a maiden before Ollie bowled 5 dot balls leaving Sawbo needing 1 to tie or 2 to win off the last ball. Sawbo got bat on ball and with the encouragement of the away supporters they scampered through for a single to also finish on 227-9, so the game finished as a tie. This was a great advert for children’s cricket with every pair batting for four overs, bowling for two overs and importantly with every child walking off the pitch with a smile on their face. The Mini-World Cup was a real success!

Reed CC's Coaches' Coordinator, Richard Barlow reports: On Sunday morning Reed Cricket Club members from the Under 9 to Under 13 age groups took part in a Mini-Cricket World Cup instead of their normal coaching session. It was an exciting morning with lots of fast paced matches and a chance for children from different age groups to join up and challenge each other. Reed CC Coaches selected three players who stood out with their team work and performances throughout the tournament, they were Charlie Walters (U13), Oliver Keenan (U13) and Lily Hall (U9). The "England" Team were victorious winning four of their five games and tieing one with "Australia"! All children got an ICC World Cup 2019 wrist band and a certificate. Reed's Colts Manager James Heslam praised everyone involved. "It was a fun morning, some parents made refreshments for the children and others managed teams, it was a great team effort and is another example of why our club is such a good community both on and off the field!"

Garrott innings sees the 3rds to victory

On the hottest day of the year so far, Reed 3rd XI hosted second place Rickmansworth III at the Freman Oval. The hosts won the toss and opted to bowl, hoping to avoid the forecast late afternoon heat. Rickmansworth openers Langley (42) and Raz Khan (68) started steadily despite accurate bowling from Owen Hughes (5-1-24-0) and Julien Fynn (9-3-34-1). The pair continued to build on their foundation during the first spell of left-armer Matt Yates (9-0-36-0), however the introduction of Robert Willoughby (9-0-34-4), bowling in tandem with Steve Hughes (9-0-56-0) saw the breakthrough when Langley succumbed to an arm ball from Willoughby. This became the start of Willoughby’s rampage as; next bowling Abbas (1) then snatching a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Adeel Khan (10). The big wicket came when Willoughby trapped Raz Khan lbw, finishing his well crafted innings. Shah (21) and Yousuf (22) looked to up the run rate as the innings headed into the later overs. Both batsmen played aggressively until Shah was caught by Steve Hughes off the bowling of Robertson (4-0-41-1). His replacement, Mohammed (29) continued in the same vein until Fynn bowled Yousuf, and Mohammed was run out by the Reed captain Rhodri Hughes. Butt (5) and Harvey (1) closed out the innings, with Rickmansworth finishing on 231 for 7 from their 45 overs. Reed’s response began smoothly with openers Paul Garrott (80) and Richard Johnson (57) patiently waiting to put away the bad ball. With Reed on 114 from 19 overs Johnson was caught and bowled by Adeel Khan (7-0-1-46). Willoughby (33) then joined Garrott at the crease, with the two again building a strong partnership until Willoughby was bowled by Harvey (9-1-30-1). Garrott continued strongly, [...]

Reed bowlers rout Ampthill

Ampthill must have regretted opting to bat first as Reed's bowlers revelled in the sunshine, reducing them to 47-8 after 23 overs. The early damage was done by the opening pace attack of Ed Wharton (3-20) and Jack Tidey (2-15). both bowlers repeatedly beating the bat and tying down the batsmen. There was no respite from Tom Greaves and Zac McGuigan, who took a wicket apiece, with the latter also exacting a sharp run out when the batsman momentarily left his crease. With four ducks in a row the home side were in absolute disarray. Skipper, Will Sneath, and keeper, Warwick Bradfield then showed grit and determination to hold out for a further 22 overs, virtually doubling the score in the process, until the latter was brilliantly run out by Rob Lankester. Toby Fynn immediately skittled the last man in, leaving Ampthill 91 all out. It took Reed just 18 overs to pass their total, with Ed Wharton again the destroyer racing to 32 with three boundaries and two maximums. Zac McGuigan (11) and Rob Lankester (22) kept up the momentum until both were dismissed with the score on 71.Thus it was left to Matt Sampson (20 not out) with some text book drives and a towering six to finish the game with the loss of only 3 wickets. Reed have now won 7 of their 8 games and move up to second with fellow high fliers, Hoddesdon, visiting the Green next Saturday for a chance to catch Shenley Village at the top of the table. Chorleywood out-spun by ‘Universe Bowles’

Some much-needed sunshine at the Green made the decision an easy one for Reed 2nds when they won the toss and elected to bat. Opener Phil Frenay returned to the squad after his weeks in the sun, and was joined at the top of the order by the youngest of the Martin brothers, Fergus. Also making guest appearances for the 2nds this week were familiar faces William Dobson and Simon Jackson. Both openers got off to a great start, and Frenay scored freely and quickly, picking up where he left off from his last innings at Sawbridgeworth. Martin played more conservatively, but also looked in great touch, supporting Frenay in an unbeaten century stand for the first wicket. There was talk of a huge total from the Reed squad, with predicted totals well in excess of 300, before Frenay fell for 78, LBW. Chris Jackson was in next, and as usual batted confidently, continuing to build the total in partnership with Martin. Martin fell bowled, just short of his 50. Club captain Tom Greaves was next to join in adding the runs, having demoted himself to the 2s whilst nursing a back injury, which gradually eased up as he progressed with his innings. When Greaves fell, it was left to Jackson (51) and the rest of the Reed middle order (Dobson, Baker, Ward and Bowles) to all chip in, finishing in a strong position at 256 for 6. Opening the bowling against the Chorleywood response were Karl Ward and Matt Giblin. Despite both bowling some good lines, the pitch offered little in support, nor was the ball moving in the air which meant the Chorleywood openers were able to get off to a solid start. [...]
