Three is the magic number as Reed win the National Village Cup again!

Fresh from achieving promotion to the Premier Division of the Hertfordshire Cricket League on Saturday, Reed returned to the “Home of Cricket”, the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground, for their third appearance in the National Village Cup Final in 8 seasons; this time, matched against Houghton Main Cricket Club from South Yorkshire. In all three Finals of this national competition in which they have appeared, Reed’s opponents have been from the strong county of Yorkshire. This competition is now in its 47th year and is organised by The Cricketer Magazine, itself approaching its century since its first publication. On a brilliantly warm late-summer day, Reed won the toss and chose to field. Toby Fynn opened the bowling from the Pavilion End and was dispatched for ten in the first over. Jack Tidey, (from the Nursery End, although would now be better described as the “building site end” because of the re-construction of the Edrich and Compton Stands), recorded an analysis of 2 for 19 from his 8 overs, and was on the spot from his first delivery. Fynn recovered superbly after the wayward first over to bowl his 8 overs in one spell returning figures of 1 for 25 after capturing the first wicket, that of Houghton Main’s high-scoring batsman, Simon Ward, for 18 in the 9th over when the score was 30 for 1. Brown and Rehman soon followed and the White Rose team were wobbling at 35 for 3. Soon afterwards, opening batsman, Ian Simon*, received a sickening blow to the head and was forced to retire hurt and was taken to hospital for scans. The Reed, white and blue!

Little village Reed join the big boys in the Premiership. Having finished runners-up in the Championship, Reed hosted Luton Town & Indians, who had come ninth in the Premiership, in the play-off match for the right to play in the top tier of Hertfordshire cricket in 2020. For the first time in their history, Reed with a population of only 300+ have reached the Premier division, joining sides such as Radlett and Welwyn next year. However, the play off against Luton was not without some nervous tension. Once again Reed's bowlers didn't let them down. Jack Tidey, bowling economically his 10 overs straight through took out two batsmen, finishing with 2-25. Then Tom Greaves (1-28) and Ed Wharton (2-29) followed suit, leaving Luton 89-5 with only 20 overs to play with. Although they battled hard, Sean Tidey mopped up the tail finishing with figures of 4-34 as their opponents ended on 157 all out in the 48th over. This seemed 50 runs short as Reed set off with their usual gallop. Luton's opening attack of Manzoor (2-37) and Gittens-Browne (3-42) proved too hot to handle, though, as five of the top order perished for a mere 58 runs in 12 overs. Only Zac Mcguigan (28) survived the onslaught partnering Matt Sampson before he was bowled by Fayaz Homyoon. Tom Greaves (23) helped Sampson to what looked to be a match winning stand of 46 until he was stumped charging Homyoon with 15 required, As the spectators held their breath in case Reed imploded like last week Sean Tidey pulled and straight drove Sajjad Homyoon for 4 and 6 to take Reed home. Sun-Sets at Reed

Pace man Ryan Cooper held an impressive line and length and when finding Richard Falder’s edge, caught by keeper, Rhodri Hughes, for 15, he had taken his first wicket for Reed on debut. He was spelled after 5 overs with figures of 1 for 12 and replaced by P.G. Baker who was also rewarded with a rare wicket when ex-Reed Colt, Michael Fox, missed a ball than spun both ways to be stumped by Hughes for 33. Liam O’Hanlon made 13 but it was left-handed opener Godfrey who governed the innings with a well-played 62 not out. Aston were 5 down for 155 at the tea interval after long absent Vice-President, Andy Young, got some zip from the pitch bowling up the hill and took the other 3 wickets to fall at a personal cost of 29. Reed skipper, Matt Giblin engineered the way the game was played by sticking to the creed of “those that bowl, bowl, and those that bat, bat.” This worked out well as Owen Hughes and MJE Baker made their first significant contributions to the match by running-up 69 for the first wicket before Baker was bowled for 31. Rhodri Hughes hadn’t bowled either, but he struck 27 alongside his brother then once caught off Benigala, Paul Garrott came to the crease to score 18 not out. Meanwhile, Owen Hughes went to his career highest score to date and was not out with a well-judged 69 as Reed won comfortably by 8 wickets and with more than 5 overs to spare. Third XI win but miss out on promotion

Reed had to win this match to stand any chance of promotion vying as they were with Bushey for the crucial second position in Division 10A. Ahead of them were Bentley Heath who could not be caught by either of them and the Southgate Compton team that the League management committee had declared could not be promoted because of their availability problems immediately before the beginning of the season. The outcome Reed wished for was for Bentley Heath to beat Bushey in their clash. More of that later. At the Freman Oval, Rhodri Hughes won the toss and inserted Ickleford who were soon on their way with 26 on the board within 4 overs as Matthew Gray found some easy boundaries but then perished to a skied caught and bowled by Owen Hughes off a top-edged pull shot. Ben Whelan and opener David Pursey added 125 more runs before Whelan fell to the teen-aged Sam Osborn’s leg-breaks for 64. Osborn, usually seen in the Under 13 Colts team, created several more unclaimed chances before again clean bowling his second victim, Peareth for 9. Reynard clattered a quick 25 not out and Pursey remained undefeated on 78 when Ickleford’s innings closed on 218 for 3 after 45 overs. Reed began comfortably as Peter Baker (34) and Richard Johnson put-on 63 for the first wicket in 14 overs then a further 87 as Mike Robertson struck a rapid 48 in the next 8 overs. Johnson fell shortly after for a smooth 76 and Julien Fynn hit 24, but Reed lost some surprisingly quick wickets when Jake Cook resumed in his second spell taking 4 for 43 and the nuts on the wheels began to loosen. Seconds make heavy weather of beating Ampthill

Having become Divisional Champions with a week to spare and achieving promotion to Division 3B next season, Reed 2nd XI ended their 2019 League campaign with a tightly fought match against Ampthill’s Second Team at The Green on Saturday. Richard Barlow fell early to the bowling of Devon Brooke (8-2-33-3), leaving Marcus Martin (43) and Chris Jackson (48) to rebuild. Martin fell to the accuracy of Passman (10-3-23-2) and so too did James Sandford for (18). Jackson deserved a fifty but fell two short when given out LBW. Skipper Ed Garrott (42) and Marcus Baker made a 40-run partnership for the sixth wicket before Garrott became the second victim of Kieran Smith (10-1-51-3) again given out LBW. The returning Brooke and Smith took three more wickets to leave Reed on 201 for 9 at the end of their fifty over allocation. Reed opened their bowling attack with Toby Fynn (7-1-16-1) who was returning from injury and Matt Giblin (6-2-19-1). Ampthill started tentatively with their openers looking to preserve their wickets rather than force the pace. Giblin produced a great in swinger to bowl R Smith for 15 leaving the visitors on 27-1 in the tenth over. Skipper Haxell and Degnan built a 69 second wicket partnership to bring Ampthill back into the game. Karl Ward (10-4-12-0) bowled tightly and was unlucky not to take a wicket. Ampthill were then helped by some wayward Reed bowling as they conceded 18 wides and 5 no balls in an extras total of 33. Rupert Martin was forced to leave the field with a major hand injury part way during his fifth over. Hoddesdon hold their nerve to inch to final victory

Before the match Hoddesdon required just 5 points to secure the Championship title, but nerves were fraying as they slipped to 61 for 4 with Jack Tidey removing gun bats, Rob Walters and Jadyn Broodryk, Ed Wharton and Tom Greaves then tied down the middle order before drinks. However, Todd Sturdy (59) and James Achillea (36) accelerated the rate, putting on 73 for the fifth wicket. Although Zac McGuigan (2-50) removed both batsmen, some lusty hitting by Jones and Burrell took them to 224-8. Nevertheless, thanks to a tight final over from Jack Tidey (3-50) they finished an agonizing run short of the fifth point they needed. The Reed innings remarkably followed the course of their opponents' knock. Only Richard Wharton (43) survived some accurate bowling by Thorne and Burrell as they stumbled to 68 for 5. It was left to James Heslam and Matt Sampson (31) to slowly rebuild with a stand of 61. Then Mitchell Cooper took over, slamming 40 in 30 balls with five towering maximums. With just 8 needed from 9 balls, captain Walters (4-15) stepped up, taking 3 wickets in 4 balls to dismiss Reed for 217, leaving Heslam (70) unbeaten at the non-striker's end. A topsy-turvy game, befitting a top of the table encounter, thus ended with Hoddesdon as champions, promoted to the Premier League and Reed due to face Luton Town and Indians next week on the Green to see whether they could also reach the top division for the first time in their history. Reed 1st XI make it to the play-offs.

Reed 1st XI ensured a home play-off place for promotion to the Saracens Herts Premier League with this emphatic win over Ampthill. Ampthill won the toss and elected to bat only to see Zac McGuigan strike in the first over. Soon Jack Tidey was in on the act, taking two cheap wickets, leaving Ampthill 30 for 3 after 10 overs. Ampthill revived with a partnership of 70 from Darlow and Lewin, but with the introduction of Tom Greaves (8-1-22-4) the innings soon subsided to 128 all out in the 33rd over. Reed's innings got off to an inauspicious start when the dangerous Ed Wharton was bowled first ball by Sneath. But a good partnership between McGuigan (70) and W. Heslam (28) put Reed in the driving seat. After two wickets fell cheaply, Stuart Smith (13 not out) supported McGuigan and Jack Caine to take Reed over the line. This result put Reed in an unassailable 2nd position with their final game against leaders Hoddesdon next weekend. However only a victory by a huge margin would see Reed overhaul their opponents to finish top of the league and guarantee promotion. Realistically Reed will meet either Luton Town & Indians or West Herts in the play-off game at Reed on Saturday September 14th, the day before they appear at Lord's for the Final of the National Village Cup. Reed 2nds: Champions Elect!

Reed 2nd XI clinched the Saracens Hertfordshire Division 4B title with a game to spare, after yet another comprehensive victory, this time away to Flamstead. The first place finish entitles Reed to a promotion to Division 3B next season, with the peculiarities of the Herts League meaning league winners are promoted two Divisions, and second place moving up one Division in the pyramid. Reed skipper Ed Garrott lost the toss and his side were asked to field by the hosts. Julien Fynn (7-0-43-2) and Rupert Martin (5-1-20-0) had possession of the new ball and both bowled well against some aggressive top order batting. Martin was particularly impressive with his control, and was unlucky not to be rewarded with wickets, however Fynn was able to make the breakthrough, taking 2 wickets in his opening spell to leave the hosts 35-2. A good partnership by Peris and Greenwood followed, and took Flamstead to 94-2 before the introduction of Karl Ward helped swing the game back in Reed’s favour. Ward (10-3-21-5) bowled beautifully as he set about the Flamstead batsmen on his way to a five-wicket haul, his first of the season. Ward was ably supported by James Sandford (5.1-0-6-3) as the hosts crumbled from 94-2 to 125 all out, under immense pressure from the relentless Reed bowling. The visitors again held on to their catches, which has proved so crucial this season. Reed’s response got off to a decent start, with Richard Barlow looking in defiant mood. Fighting spirit sees Reed III move up the league

On this occasion, Rhodri Hughes lost the toss, which was not to prove critical with Reed 3rd XI put into bat on this hot bank holiday Saturday. The Hoddesdon opening bowlers of Savanhu and Osborne (4 maidens in a row) were either notably fast and/or accurate. There was the loss of Peter Baker (4) in the 6th over bowled by Osborne with the score on 10. Fortunately, Savanhu only bowled in 3 over spells as he tired, and his last 2 were bowled off a much shorter run. Paul Garrott (38) and Rob Willoughby (45) went steadily about the run collection so that Reed were 95 at the end of the 24th over having lost Paul in that over but not before we witnessed the rarity of Paul hitting a 6. There followed the loss of Scott Nash (9) to a good catch in the deep. Then Rhodri Hughes increased the scoring rate with a quick 33, which included 6 fours, before dancing down the wicket and being stumped. The total was pushed onto 229 with some fine hitting and running between the wickets by Julien Fynn (59 not out) and Maseeh Naeem (18 not out and breathing heavily at the end). We then had tea supplied by Lloyd Bowman, who didn’t play as he was at "Twickers" but had been ably replaced by Bill Mansfield. Hoddesdon lost 2 early wickets, bowled by Fynn (2 for 18 in 7 overs) in a fine opening spell alongside Joe Graves (0 for 28 in 6 overs). Terry Savanhu then proved that he was not just an opening bowler with a robust 50 before an excellent catch by Baker off the bowling of Steve Hughes (2 for 46 [...]

Reed nearly out the Woods

Reed 2nds maintained their promotion and title push with a comprehensive victory away to Chorleywood 2nds. Batting first, Richard Johnson (26) and Phil Frenay (48) got Reed off to a flyer as both looked in fine form. However, once both fell in similar fashion, the evergreen Chris Jackson (63) and Richard Barlow (26) took up the mantle, to take Reed through towards 200. Mike Robertson (29) helped to up the rate after Barlow had perished, but a flurry of middle order wickets left Reed contemplating a below par score. However the Reed tail managed to wag with Matt Bowles (14), Rupert Martin (19 not out) and Matt Giblin (13 not out) adding 50 runs in the final 5 overs to leave Reed 274 for 9 in their 50 overs. The Chorleywood response started brightly, aided by some inconsistent Reed bowling. However an ill-judged run to Chris Jackson and some excellent line bowling from Owen Hughes (6-1-17-3) flipped the game in Reed’s favour. Spin twins Matt Bowles and Ed Garrott then both also picked up 3 wickets each as Reed ran through Chorleywood, bowling them out for 131. Reed stay top with 2 games to play.
