Reed Firsts close in on Play-off Place

A depleted First XI with three players making their first team debuts this season, held off a strong Dunstable side to strengthen their hold on a play-off place. After electing to bat, captain Rob Lankester must have been delighted to see the returning William Heslam (36) and Zachary McGuigan nullify the threat of nemesis, Luke Cherry, with an opening stand of 90. Having hit Beds' Sam Cherry for 6, Heslam departed bowled next ball, but McGuigan (64) and Lankester (38) then added a further 55 to leave Dunstable reeling at 145 for 2. Nevertheless, the evergreen Robert Simpkins started to pick up wickets on a regular basis, finishing with 5 for 43. Only James Heslam (36) offered sustained resistance, but Reed's total of 232 for 7 looked to be par for the conditions. McGuigan (3-34) made it look more imposing, however, and with Sean Tidey as economical as ever, taking 2-30 from his allotted 10 overs, Dunstable slumped to 111-7. There was a twist in the tail, though, as John Barry (51) and Sam Jewiss (31) put together a half-century partnership. With skipper, Lankester, running out of bowling options, Jack Caine stepped up dismissing the last three batsmen for just 12 runs, including two clean bowled. Dunstable 174 all out in 40 overs. As a result, Reed will probably secure a play-off place with a win against struggling Ampthill next week, especially if Shenley Village are docked points for allegedly fielding one overseas player too many. Reed III bounce back at Bushey

Reed 3rds travelled to Bushey 3rds with both teams in the promotion hunt. Reed skipper Rhodri Hughes won the toss and elected to bowl with the wicket looking difficult to bat on. Reed’s bowling started well with Joe Graves (9-0-31-2) and Owen Hughes (9-3-34-1) bowling tightly and taking early wickets that they deserved. The change bowlers of Kieran McKinna (7.1-2-17-1) and Ollie Sayers (6-1-31-2) kept up the good work from the opening pair and took wickets at vital times. Reed kept the pressure on with Rob Willoughby (9-0-33-2) and Matt Yates (4-1-25-2) who took two wickets in two balls leaving the hosts in trouble at 123 for 8. However, some resistance from Ali (57 not out) batting nicely with the tail took Bushey to 186 all out in the last over. Reed’s reply didn’t start well, losing Peter Baker and Rob Willoughby in consecutive balls leaving Reed 9 for 2. Paul Garrott soon followed leaving Reed 18 for 3 from 10 overs with Sohail taking all 3 wickets. Rhodri Hughes and Scott Nash started to rebuild the innings putting the bad balls away and running well between the wickets. As soon as they brought up the 50 partnership, Rhodri was bowled for 25 from a poor shot leaving Reed 68 for 4 with plenty of work to do. Bringing younger brother Owen Hughes to the crease, he and Nash continued to put the bad balls away and rotate the strike well. These two built a match winning partnership of 103 for the 5th wicket with Scott Nash falling for a brilliant 84. Reed only needed 16 to win but they lost Kieran McKinna cheaply putting a bit of pressure on. But Matt Yates (7 not [...]

Seconds send the Exiles north as they keep up their promotion push

Reed Seconds remained top of Division 4B of the Herts League with a hard-earned win over Northampton Exiles at The Green. The visitors won the toss and put Reed into bat on a day that looked as if it may help the bowlers. Richard Barlow fell third ball as he was bowled by Kayani. Four overs later one of last week’s centurions, James Sandford, slashed at a wide delivery and was caught behind, the hosts were 14 for 2. Skipper Ed Garrott fell for just 2, which brought Michael Robertson to the crease as he and Phil Frenay set about rebuilding the innings. Robertson played with controlled aggression, whilst Frenay played the anchor role. Robertson fell shortly after the fifty partnership was brought up. George Teebon soon followed, Reed were 93 for 5. George Garrott came to the wicket and played the ball with exquisite timing and Frenay began to up the ante and passed eighty from the other end too. They put on a 110 partnership in 107 balls to turn the innings on its head. Garrott fell shortly after posting his fifty. Reed lost their last four wickets going for runs and ended 231 all out on the stroke of fifty overs. Reed opened the bowling with Rupert Martin and Julien Fynn. The Exiles' skipper was the first to go, the first of two catches at mid-wicket from George Garrott. Sandford turned golden arm with ball as he took 2-28 as he and Martin 2-29 began to turn the screw at 69-4. The bowling was backed up by superb fielding and two run outs, one from Matt Bowles and one from Martin, and the Exiles were 114 for 6. Bowles, 2-27, and the [...]

Reed leap-frog over Shenley in low scoring match.

In a match versus Shenley Village delayed and reduced to 36 overs per side as overnight rain had seeped through the covers, Reed eschewed their usual belligerent approach to concentrate on rotating the strike. The measure of their success can be gauged by the fact only 6 boundaries were struck, yet they totalled 125 in 34 overs. Just 5 batsmen reached double figures with James Heslam (29) top scoring. As in the reverse fixture, Kris Nissen proved a handful finishing with 2-18 in his 7 over burst and Marwan Mohammed (4-27) took out the lower order. Facing a strong batting line up, Reed started with a flourish, Zac Mcguigan bowling Northants' Charles Thurston for a third ball duck. However it was Jack Tidey who caught the eye with an explosive spell of 8-2-11-3, clean bowling two of his victims. At the other end, Tom Greaves was at his parsimonious best, with his 7 overs going at exactly one per over as well as a wicket. The spin of Sean Tidey (1-20) and Marcus Martin (2-24) also frustraated the Shenley batsmen, who had stuttered to 62-8 from 28 overs. Indeed Martin snared both the dangerous Nissen and finally the lynch pin of the innings, Mohammed (42), through some outstanding catches by Ed Wharton and Matt Sampson. The latter also claimed a run out and when Jack Caine gained a wicket, Shenley were all out for 98. They had managed a mere 3 boundaries in their entire innings. It was a sparkling display of bowling and ground fielding, which means Reed have leap-frogged over their opponents to second place in the league with just 3 games of the season left. Reed 3rds promotion hunt is halted

Reed 3rds headed to a blustery Holtwhites Trinibis 3’s, skipper Rhodri Hughes won the toss again and elected to bowl. Reed started well with the ball with Owen Hughes and Kieran McKinna opening the bowling and Owen taking 2 early wickets (9-2-36-2). Kieran also took a wicket ending on 9-1-45-2. Holtwhites were in trouble at 24 for 3. They began a rebuild with Islam taking a very aggressive approach getting 52 quickly until Steve Hughes (8.2-1-23-1) came on and took his wicket. Reed could have had him a lot earlier if it wasn’t for dropped catches. Reed started to tie Holtwhites down but couldn’t get the wickets they were looking for with more dropped catches. C. Garnsworthy batted patiently hitting the bad balls to the boundary with 74 not out taking Holtwhites' score to 247-6. This score could have been considerably less if the fielding had been better. Reed’s reply started well with Richard Johnson and Paul Garrott taking the total to 35 before Paul was bowled. Then Johnson fell soon after and a mini-collapse soon occurred where Mike Robertson, Rhodri Hughes and Scott Nash fell cheaply leaving Reed 86 for 5, where the Holtwhites bowlers were extracting extra bounce from the wicket. Reed began to rebuild with George Garrott and Owen Hughes batting sensibly by rotating the strike well and putting the bad ball away. They put on 65 until George was out for 48 to a low full toss. Owen continued to bat well receiving good support from Kieran and Lloyd Bowman and keeping up with the run rate. Reed looked like they could still get the win, but wickets fell from the other end as Hughes batted well for his maiden fifty [...]

Jackson and Sandford ton up for the table toppers!

Reed 2s maintained their excellent form to stay top of the table, thanks mainly to a stunning batting performance from Chris Jackson and James Sandford. On an excellent wicket, hosts Stevenage 2s won the toss and surprisingly inserted Reed into bat. Richard Barlow (24) and Phil Frenay (45) again got Reed off to an excellent start, before both fell in quick succession. This only served to bring Jackson and Sanford to the middle and what followed was carnage. Jackson, who before this game had scored over 350 runs without being dismissed in the last 5 games, continued his unbelievable form as he stroked the Stevenage bowling all over before falling off the penultimate ball of the innings for a fine 109. Sandford was perhaps even more impressive as he notched up his maiden league ton for Reed, accelerating from 50 to his final score of 127 not out in double quick time. In doing so, the pair set a massive new third wicket partnership of 231. Reed posing a mammoth 313-3 in a rain reduced 47 overs. In reply, and following the undisputed tea of the season, Stevenage never really got going. Rupert Martin (2-21) was the pick of the Reed bowlers as he came back well from his ‘none-fa’ the week before. Wickets also went to Ed Garrott (1-33), Jack Caine (1-16), Matt Bowles (1-46) and Marcus Martin (2-17) as Stevenage stuttered to 170-8 at the end of their innings. Flitwick spinners stifle Reed run chase

Having posted 259-7, Flitwick's spin duo South African David Powles and Sri Lankan Rumesh Buddhika contained Reed's batsmen so that they could only total 205-4 in an innings curtailed to 50 overs owing to rain breaks. Initially, Reed's seamers restricted their opponents to 57-3, including the prize wicket of Bedfordshire batsman, George Thurstance, bowled by Jack Tidey for 19. However, Harry Thurstance (71) and Buddhika (129 not out) shared a partnership of 157 until Tom Greaves trapped the former with the last ball of his 20 over spell. Tidey (2-32) and Zac McGuigan (2-62) chipped in with late wickets before the rain halted the innings two balls short. Ed Wharton set the host's innings off to a speedy start with a run a ball 55, but even he found the spinners hard to get away. Eventually both he and Greaves (15) holed out to Prowles, who also had the dogged McGuigan caught in the deep for a battling 37, finishing with the excellent figures of 19-4-49-3. Indeed the most exciting feature of this spell was umpire Brian 'Shep' Shepard crashing into the stumps, leaving him sprawling on the ground in his haste to fill in his overs chart! Although they were too far behind the run rate, Matt Sampson (40 not out) and Sean Tidey (28 not out), the latter with some audacious hitting, gave the crowd some late entertainment. Nevertheless, a game which eventually petered out due to the rain, ended with Flitwick gaining a "winning draw". Hoddesdon's 1-wicket victory over Letchworth has left Reed 38 points behind them, although only 2 points separate them from next week's opponents, Shenley Village. These last four matches of the campaign will be 50/50 matches with a [...]

Reed Thirds still pushing for promotion!

At a sunny Freman Oval Rhodri Hughes, the Reed captain, won the toss and elected to field first on a good looking wicket. Saturday saw Reed field three very strong teams as layer availability was good this week! West Herts started brightly finding the odd boundary and running the quick single until Kieran Mckinna (7.5-0-24-4) took the first 2 wickets after which West Herts never really got going, losing batsmen at regular intervals. A few lusty blows from Mushtaq got them up to 114 before he was nicely caught on the boundary by George Garrott. When he came on to bowl, Garrott also took 3 wickets for 25 from his 9 overs. Alex Kelly took one and there were two good run-outs in an outstanding fielding display. Reed's reply started well with Richard Johnson and Paul Garrott making it to the tea interval at 44 without loss from 10 overs. After the interval Johnson carried on magestically, finding the rope with ease. The pair had put on 104 for the 1st wicket when Garrott (43) nicked behind. That started a slight panic in the dressing room as Reed proceeded to lose 3 quick wickets for 3 runs. But George Garrott came in to accompany the classy Johnson, who remained undefeated on 69 at the other end, to see Reed home to win convincingly by 7 wickets. Reed are in 5th position in the Division but technically are fourth owing to Southgate Compton, (who currently head the table), being ineligible to be promoted this season. Match Report submitted by Paul Garrott.

Cooper and Smith take Reed to Lord’s in a thriller on The Green

Reed will return to Lord’s on 15th September after a nail biting Semi-Final win in the National Village Cup against Hampshire’s Sarisbury Athletic. Electing to bat first, Sarisbury were indebted to their skipper Rawlins (63) who anchored the innings. At drinks the Hants. side were 84-2 and a score in excess of 200 beckoned. However, Reed skipper Tom Greaves marshalled his bowling options well and he was rewarded with a personal return of 8-1-23-2, whilst Mitchell Cooper (1-43) bowled good lines. However, it was the reintroduction of Sean Tidey (4-45) that proved decisive. After discharging his wicket-keeping duties in the first 20 overs, the younger Tidey brother removed Journeaux who was set on 40 and combining with "deputy keeper" Rob Lankester for two stumping in successive Tidey overs it left Sarisbury on 195-8 from their 40 over quota. Possibly this was 30 runs short on the Reed wicket. Reed lost Sean Tidey early when the score was 5, but Rob Lankester and Tom Greaves set about building a sound foundation. A mix up though led to Lankester being run out for 41 and when James Heslam fell in the next over, the hosts were 87-3 at drinks. Greaves fell caught for 47 trying to clear the mid-wicket boundary to get his fifty and when Mike Catt soon followed, Reed were 104-5. Stuart Smith and Mitchell Cooper now set about rebuilding the innings. Striking the bad ball and running well between the wickets the two kept Reed in the game. 72 needed from the last ten overs. Sarisbury though produced five tight overs leaving 42 required from 30 balls; the nerves were jangling. Smith and Cooper then began to hit out paticularly against wicket taker Josh [...]
