Howard Marshall Pavilion, Sunday 6th May 2018

As we approach the beginning of another cricket season, a date for you to note is Sunday 6th May. That is when Reed Cricket Club officially names its Clubhouse the Howard Marshall Pavilion. During the afternoon, a Reed XI will play a match versus a Howard Marshall XI starting at 1400hrs followed by a short naming ceremony at approximately 1830hrs. There will be a Hog Roast afterwards. We would like to see as many past & present members, their families and friends as possible during the day. Please keep the date free. We passed the 40th anniversary of the original opening of the Clubhouse last year. Although in use prior to the official opening, Reed played an Invitational XI made up of cricketers from cricket clubs in the Royston and surrounding district. The match was played on the 5th June 1977 and the "cutting of the ribbon" ceremony was performed by Mrs Joy Reffell. She was the wife of Norman Reffell, a prominent member of the Club. The photographs show the combined teams and along with the history of the construction of the Clubhouse these are displayed inside the lounge area. Images of the relevant pages form the scorebook are also attached. I appreciate they may be faded because they are written in pencil but here is a brief summary. It was an All-Day match. Fred Flack (9) and David Ford (6) opened the batting. John Raven top-scored with 33 and Peter King made 11. Neville Bird at number 5 scored 12 followed by useful contributions of 26 by Steve Dunn and 24 by Clive Collins. Number 8 was Peter Lawrence who was out for 4 then Howard Marshall hit 3 boundaries in his 19. [...]

Results of voting at the SHPCL AGM

Richard Robertson represented Reed CC at the League’s AGM on 26th February. Three proposals had been circulated earlier in the year and RCC Players had been invited to respond to a short survey. Resulting from that, Reed voted NO to all three proposals. Here are the results voted on by the Clubs at the League AGM last night:- 1. Should Bonus points be awarded to Teams providing a competent, non-playing Scorer in all matches in Divisions 3A to 6B? NOT CARRIED. 2. Should all matches in Divisions 7A to 10B be reduced from 100 to 90 overs? NOT CARRIED. 3. Should all matches in every division below the Championship be limited overs only (i.e., no more “timed matches” in the future)? CARRIED. Consequently, there will be no more Drawn games. From Division 1 to 10B (inclusive) these will be 50/50 matches. (The Regional Divisions already play only 40/40 limited overs matches anyway.) These were important issues so thank you to RCC players who replied to the survey. Additional information from the AGM is that the New Laws of Cricket will apply this season. The Laws were amended in October 2017. To read The Laws of Cricket, go to www.lords.org then choose MCC. Clubs participating in the Premier and Championship Divisions are administered by their own Sub-Committee. Changes accepted for 2018 are:- 1. Play offs. The reserve day will be the following Saturday (not the next day). If there is still no result, a bowl out will take place. If still no result, then there will be a coin toss. 2. The same applies for promotion and relegation play-off matches. 3. Bowling restrictions. Bowlers are restricted to one-third of the total overs in the innings, (rounded [...]

National Village Cup Draw (2018)

The National Village Cup Draw for 2018 was made on Friday 16th February. There are more than 300 entries overall. Only 8 Clubs are participating in Group 22, (Herts & Beds) meaning Reed get a Bye in the 1st Round on the 29th April. Reed's first match this season will be Away at old rivals Langleybury in the 2nd Round on Sunday 13th May. The victors will play at Home against either Sharnbrook & Bromham (it’s been mis-spelt on the NVC website) or Sawbridgeworth. Near neighbours Foxton also get a Bye in Group 29. So do last year's beaten finalists, Sessay from Yorkshire, who have entered their 2nd XI in Group 3. (Their 1st Team is ineligible for the NVC this season because they have been promoted to the top-tier of their Premier League.) The full draw is visible on www.nationalvillagecup.com PGB
