Race Night at Reed CC, 8th July

A MESSAGE FROM SARAH NASH, MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY, REED CC. Hello to all our Members, Friends and Supporters of Reed Cricket Club, On Saturday 8th July the club will be holding a Race Night at the Howard Marshall Pavilion with the first race starting at 8pm. Tickets for the evening will be £5 per person and this will include a serving of hot food and a race card. This will either be a vegetable chilli / chilli con carne. If you have specific dietary requirements please let me know and I will do everything I can to sort something for you. (Contact details below.) Additionally, we have a number of ways to support the event even if you are unable to attend. We are offering you the chance to purchase one (or more) horses with the winning owner in each race receiving a prize. To own one of the horses we are asking for £3 per horse. In addition to this we are looking for race sponsors. Sponsors will receive a shout out on the night and will have their company name put into the race card. Race Sponsorship is £20 per race. Preston pans Reed with bat and ball

Two teams struggling for form met on the Cokenach Estate and Preston emerged victorious by 150 runs. Despite Julien Fynn removing the dangerous Ed Wharton early on, the away team took charge with a mammoth 253 run partnership between Daniel Scholz (115) and Philip Simpson (108), although the latter was given three lives. Pete Gooden then struck 45 from just 19 balls, so Preston finished on the impressive total of 335 for 4. Nevertheless, Matt Giblin took 3 for 59 from his 10 overs. Reed stuttered again at first, until Chris Jackson, making a welcome return to the Firsts, scored a stylish 54 and was well supported by Jack Caine, who compiled 60 runs in composed fashion. Thereafter, the innings succumbed to spin, despite some aggressive batting from Stuart Smith, Mike Robertson and Toby Fynn. Max Anderson (5-33) and Peter Murrell (3-67) were responsible for their downfall as Reed still seek their first win of the season. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Redemption

Reed Firsts redeemed themselves after last week's fiasco by putting in a much improved performance against top of the table Shenley Village. Choosing to bat first, Reed set off with their best opening stand of the season, Will Heslam (44) and Sam Osborne (18) compiling 62 before Shenley snapped up 4 quick wickets. However, either side of lunch, Stuart Smith (26) and Kallum Ward (35) put on 68 together until Herts County spinner Ashley Sivrajah ripped through the middle order with figures of 5 for 32. Looking at a total of just 150, Sean Tidey took control of the innings by keeping the strike and finally punishing Sivarajah by taking him for another 37 runs, including 4 maximums. As a result, Reed totalled a respectable 202 for 9 against 3 first class spinners and in the process Sean reached his unbeaten half century. In reply, Charles Thurston set off in spirited fashion, but Jack Tidey gained his prize scalp, caught behind by brother Sean. Jack's 11 overs brought him figures of 2 for 43. Shenley have packed their top order with fine attacking batsmen this season as they look to win promotion without going through another play off, so it wasn't until Matt Giblin bowled Nish Selvakumar for 37 that Reed took another wicket (136 for 3). Despite the valiant efforts of Giblin (2-28) and Heslam (1-16), Shenley cruised home, winning by 5 wickets, thanks largely to a well paced unbeaten knock of 71 by Australia A Captain, Nathan McSweeney, (who incidentally is tipped for an Ashes call-up if England can nobble one of Australia's main batsmen). Seconds fall at Colney

Reed Seconds made the trip to London Colney on Saturday. The hosts won the toss and elected to bat and they began quickly punishing any loose bowling. The big hitting Raja fell to a brilliant gully catch from Matt Bowles off Owen Hughes (8-0-46-1) for 29 with the score on 35. It didn't check the hosts' momentum as they reached 100 when Chris Jackson snaffled a smart slip catch off Will Archer (9-0-54-1), Jack Caine (9-1-33-1) added Reed's third wicket and at 108 for 3 the match seemed evenly poised. The London Colney skipper Hadley and the opener Zeiderman rebuilt until Hadley became Matt Bowles's first wicket (9.2-1-44-4), another good catch from Jackson. Reed did well to stem the runs in the final overs, Karl Ward (10-1-43-1) bowled well, though his figures didn't do him justice, Charlie Walters chipped in with two late wickets (4-0-24-2) as Reed dismissed the hosts for 244 in the last of their 50 overs, denying them full batting points by just one run in the process. Reed set off quickly with Robertson and Caine opening the reply, Robertson was given LBW with the score on 15, and Jackson joined Caine and the pair punished any loose bowling and ran well between the wickets. Jackson's luck ran out as he played a ball that bounced back on to his stumps after having made 21. Last week's hero Walters survived only three balls before playing down the wrong line to be out for 0. Meanwhile Caine was putting himself into the anchor role but again bad luck came Reed's way as he was caught off a leading edge for 28, though he did deserve more. Sanderson fifty not enough as Reed bow out of the National Village Cup

Reed travelled to Redbourn in the Regional Final of the National Village Cup after the game had to be rearranged due to Reed's ground being unavailable. Winning the toss, Redbourn elected to bat, they set off quickly until Jack Tidey (8-1-28-1) bowled Ed Hales for 5 with the score on 20, his brother Will fell for 28 to Toby Fynn (8-2-27-1), Fynn coming back well after his first three overs went for 22. Yorath and Cutler set about building an innings defining partnership of 146. Both fell in consecutive overs to skipper Rob Lankester (5-0-30-1) and Will Heslam (8-0-52-3). The remaining batters took Redbourn to a competitive total of 235 for 6 off their 40 overs. Will Heslam and Kallum Ward set off well in reply until Ward was caught for 10, a superb run out dismissed Sam Osborne for just 3 and when Heslam mistimed a slow ball to be caught for 16 and Reed were wobbling at 45 for 3. 17-year-old Max Sanderson came to the wicket to join Skipper Lankester and the two set about rebuilding the innings with some powerful hitting and good running between the wickets. Their partnership had reached 61, when Lankester was adjudged LBW for 33. Despite wickets falling around him Sanderson reached his well deserved fifty off 70 balls, he was the ninth wicket to fall for 52, despite a 25 run stand for the last wicket between Fynn and Giblin, Reed were all out for 175 losing by a 60 run margin. U15s Difficulties Continue

With the U15s squad hampered by long-term injuries, the journey to Hertford was very much an unknown entity. A re-scheduled match from earlier in the season, U15s could only muster 10 players for the half-term fixture - with two of these new additions to the team. Reed won the toss and elected to bat. Daniel Vincent and Oscar Lamb opened the batting against rapid pace. With Daniel seeing off the majority of the seam deliveries, Oscar fell to a quality catch for a duck, followed quickly by Daniel after being deceived by a spinning delivery. Reed were 5 for 2 in the 4th over. Unfortunately, Reed never really got started, and it was the wayward deliveries from Hertford which brought respectability to the score-line. Stanley Johnson (8) Charlie Cannon (8), Aaron Nash (6), Oliver Tallis (10), Luke Parker (7), Lily Hall (5) hauled the score to 96 for 8 at the end of 20 overs. Sub-100 scores are always going to be difficult to defend, so Reed were dependant on getting early wickets. Crack-bowler Lily Hall opened the bowling and was extremely close to taking a wicket with the first ball.... But after a number of near-misses, Lily finished on 3-0-23-0. Luke Parker, Charlie Cannon and Stanley Johnson were equally unlucky - and with a missing fielder, runs (and boundaries) were in plentiful supply for the Hertford openers. With both opening batsmen approaching forced-retirement on 40, it was new-player Vicky Stevenson who forced a mistake, taking a wicket with her first over of bowling. Hertford strolled to victory in the 10th over, finishing on 96 for 1 from 9.3 overs. Match Report submitted by Lee Vincent.

Walters and Archer are bright spots in Reed Seconds’ defeat

Reed Seconds welcomed Tewin Firsts to Cokenach last Saturday. Winning the toss Skipper Stuart Smith opted to bat first. Smith was the first wicket to fall run out for only one, the first of three run outs in the Reed innings. After Phil Frenay's dismissal at 23 for 2 brought 16-year-old Charlie Walters to the wicket and he hit his first delivery for four. Wickets fell intermittently but a 50 run partnership for the fifth wicket with Rich Barlow gave the team some home of posting a respectable score. Walters fell for a 75 ball 64, which included 9 fours and 2 sixes. Unfortunately the remaining batting fell away due to some tight bowling and great ground fielding from Tewin. At 165 for 8 off the maximum 50 overs, it felt that this was maybe 30 runs short on this particular batting wicket. Tewin put matters in perspective as they set off quickly in pursuit of their target. Phil Frenay took a catch of the bowling of Matt Bowles (10-0-44-1) and that checked the batting. 17-year-old Will Archer bowled with good drift and turn off the pitch and was unlucky not to take any wickets. Though the run rate was reduced significantly Reed couldn't find any further wickets as Tewin eventually reached their target inside 37 overs. Match Report submitted by Neil Haslam.
