The Semi-Final of the 2019 National Village Cup competition will be on Sunday 4th August at Reed beginning at 1300hrs. Please come to support our Team who are bidding to reach Lord's Cricket Ground in their third Final there after winning the Cup in both of their previous visits in 2012 and 2017.
The Herts League programme was virtually wiped out on Saturday. Only 10 (that is 7%) of the 128 scheduled fixtures were played. 113 matches were cancelled and a further 5 conceded. Needless to add that all three of Reed's games were cancelled. The only Reed player I know of who saw any cricketing action on Saturday was yours truly. I played at a village called Saxlingham Nethergate, (how quaint it sounds), in central Norfolk, batted at number 8 and scored 11 not out, not required to bowl, then dropped a catch! Match lost. Reed Under 9s (1) ended their season in style completing three further comfortable victories to finish unbeaten with 7 wins out of 7. The first of the three victories came away to Sawbridgeworth where with the team strengthened by the addition of Natasha McNamara they racked up a score of 319 with the largest scores by Natasha, Ethan Fox and Rory Longland backed up by an excellent bowling and fielding display with 2 wickets each for Eddie Heslam, Natasha and Ethan. The second win came against joint league title challengers Bishops Stortford, the game was expected to be tight to decide the league winners but Reed comfortably secured their second win against Stortford. Reed scored 328 with Ethan producing a fantastic innings of 43 well supported by all players including Eddie (12) and Jon Green (11). As usual Reed performed excellently in the field with Josh Heslam, Toby Cook and Ethan taking the wickets restricting Stortford to 248. The final game of the season the team saved their best for last putting in an outstanding display away to Braughing which will be remembered for the fielding which was exceptional with 6 catches and 3 direct hit run outs as the home side must have wondered what had hit them. The batting was solid as Reed scored 299 with Eddie (19), Josh (18) and Toby (16) top scoring. And then in the aforementioned superb fielding performance leading wicket takers were Josh (3), Toby, Eddie and Hugh Hollamby (2). The U11s played Royston who made 244 (Net). Gethin Hill took 2 wickets for 4 runs and there was 1 wicket each for Thomas Green, Stanley Johnson, George Arnott, Joseph Rhodes and Daniel Vincent. Reed scored 235 (Net) in reply, Thomas Green hit 13 and Daniel Vincent 11. A week later in the return match, Royston’s net score was 296, Oscar Lamb taking 2 wickets for Reed. Our U11s' innings ended on with 253 (Net), Daniel Vincent top-scoring with 27 and Matthew Barons made 12. Mildenhall ran up 140 against our Under 13s, Charlie Walters taking 2 for 15. Reed responded with 112 for 5. Sam Osborne had to retire on 31 and Charlie Walters also retired with 30.
Reed beat Foxton by eight wickets to reach the Semi-Finals of the National Village Cup, 2019 organised by The Cricketer Magazine. Electing to bat first on a pitch that had yielded 600 runs plus the previous day in a Cambs. League match, Foxton found it hard going as Reed’s opening bowling pair of Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey gave very little away. Fynn struck first bowling Hooley and when Tidey bowled Lawrence, the hosts were wobbling at 26 for 2. Enter former Reed player (and twice NVC winner) Will Heslam (83) who built successive partnerships of 66 with Cei Sanderson (28) and skipper Webster (42) to bring Foxton to 175 for 3, however the returning Fynn (ending with 5 for 34) and skipper Tom Greaves (3 for 43) bowled well in the last four overs as Foxton lost their last seven wickets for just 31 runs. Reed set about their reply in quick fashion, they did lose Sean Tidey for 9, but Rob Lankester (73) joined Rich Wharton and they built a match winning 178-run partnership for the second wicket. Great placement around the wicket from both batsmen was helped by some erratic Foxton bowling. Lankester departed with only 11 more runs left to win and the only matter remaining was whether Wharton would reach his century. Sadly he ended three runs short on a nevertheless superb 97 not out, as Matt Sampson hit the winning boundary. Reed reached their target with 25 balls to spare. Reed 2nds surged to the top of Division 4B after sweeping aside struggling Sawbridgeworth 2nds. Reed won the toss and elected to bat, which they may have regretted when the in-form Richard Johnson nicked off second ball of the game. However this only served to bring Chris Jackson to the crease to join Phil Frenay. Jackson, fresh off of the back of an unbeaten century last week, picked up where he left off as he steadily and classily accumulated runs throughout the innings. He was ably supported by Phil Frenay (26), skipper Ed Garrott (43) and Marcus Baker (36 not out). Jackson carried his bat from the first over of the game, finishing on a magnificent 125 not out. That’s now 287 runs for Jackson without being dismissed. Reed finishing on 261 for 5. Sawbo’s response never really got going as Matt Giblin (7-2-15-2) continued his good form with two early wickets, ably supported by the miserly Rupert Martin (10-1-27-1), which along with a stunning run out by Matt Bowles at backward point, left the visitors 31 for 4. An aggressive middle order partnership, aided and abetted by some suspect Reed catching, did allow some form of recovery, but Julien Fynn (9-0-41-4) plugged away up the hill and deservedly picked up four wickets as his own good form continued. Another run out, this time from George Teeboon and a sharp caught and bowled by skipper Garrott then wrapped up the Sawbo innings on 134 all out. Reed won by 127 runs. Match Report submitted by MLB.
SUNDAY (National Village Cup): The Quarter-Final clash at Foxton ended conclusively in Reed's favour. The Foxes had posted 206 all out largely thanks to ex-Reed player, William Heslam's 83. But Toby Fynn took 5 for 34 and Tom Greaves 3 for 43. After the change of innings, Richard Wharton and Rob Lankester put-on 178 for Reed's second wicket and ran home winners by 8 wickets, Lankester out for 73 and Wharton 97 not out. In the Semi-Final due to be played on Sunday the 4th of August at Reed, we shall be entertaining Sarisbury Athletic from Hampshire - it will again be a 1 o'clock start. SATURDAY (SHPCL): Despite a 3-fer by Tom Greaves and scores in the forties by Rob Lankester and Matt Sampson, the Firsts fell at the last hurdle at Hemel Hempstead, losing by 8 runs. The Seconds went to the top of Division 4B thanks to a commanding century from Chris Jackson and supporting innings from Ed Garrott and MJE Baker in Reed's 261 for 5, then bowling Sawbridgeworth out for 134. Four wickets fell to Julien Fynn. Southgate Compton got the better of the Thirds by totalling 226 for 9 then restricting Reed to 188 for 8 in their reply. In the corresponding match earlier in the season, the Third XI had failed to score any batting points and took only one bowling point when Southgate Compton scuttled Reed easily and won by 9 wickets. This time at Freman Oval, Reed equalled that 1 point tally within 3 deliveries when Owen Hughes had Brandon caught by a tumbling George Garrott for a duck. The next wicket was harder to earn as Robbie Wallis (41) and Grayson added 59 before Wallis mistimed a cross-seamed slow bouncer from Kieran McKinna into the safe hands of captain, Rhodri Hughes. After a further 41 runs, Heaney (31) missed an in-ducker from George Garrott. Cameron Wallis scored fifty then was out immediately afterwards taken at mid-off by McKinna and becoming debutant, Scott Nash's first victim. Nash had been a Reed Colt from the early nineties' vintage, but had played his senior cricket elsewhere and then stopped playing altogether several years ago. Steve Hughes bowled economically returning 1 for 38 aided by another good catch by McKinna. They exchanged roles soon after when the eldest Hughes clung on to one that was driven almost past him, giving McKinna figures of 2 for 44. Meanwhile, the younger Hughes combined when Rhodri pouched a catch off brother Owen (2 for 48). Grayson had been batting sedately since the first over whilst all this had been going on at the opposite end but eventually fell to a third catch by McKinna off Nash's bowling for 45 when the score was 195. Reed's match at Hemel Hempstead had a delayed start of one hour due to rain. Reed won the toss and decided to field and soon had Hemel in trouble. Jack Tidey (2 for 21), Tom Greaves (3 for 60) and Sean Tidey (2 for 37) all bowled well to restrict their opponents to 196 for 8 from 51 over with only Jack Doodson, having been dropped on 0, going on to make 103. Reed's reply got off to a superb start wth Ed Wharton hitting the first over for 17 runs. Wharton went on to make 27 before being bowled and then only Rob Lankester (44) and Matt Sampson (42) batted well as Reed eventually fell just short losing in the final over by 8 runs.
