Reed 1sts meet their match in Nissen

Reed were blown away by Australian-born paceman, Kris Nissen, who finished with figures of 17-8-33-6. However even these did not reflect his dominance as 4 of his victims were clean bowled by fast swinging yorkers. Only 3 Reed batsmen reached double figures with Zac McGuigan and Tom Greaves top scoring with 20 apiece. As a result the hosts managed just 106 in 37 overs. All this was in contrast to the start of the match when Ed Wharton (1 for 8) and Jack Tidey (2 for 6) reduced Shenley Village to 5 for 3 on a rain affected wicket. Yet it was Nissen again who thwarted the bowlers scoring a stylish 44 in spite of the conditions. Tom Greaves kept chipping away though, taking 4 for 58 and their opponents struggled to 138 for 9 from their 60 overs, but it proved to be plenty in the end. Reed therefore surrendered their unbeaten record this season, as well as second place in the league to their opponents. Match Report submitted but Peter Wholley.

Headlines; Week ending 16th June

SATURDAY - HERTS LEAGUE. Shenley Village recovered from losing 3 early wickets for next to nothing to 138 for 9; Tom Greaves returning 4 for 58. But Reed could manage only 106 in reply; Greaves 20 and Zac McGuigan 20 and slipped to third place in the Division. The Seconds saved fuel by not having to travel to Northampton Exiles. The game was cancelled because of an unfit pitch. Bushey scored 207 for 7 against the Thirds on the Freman Oval, Toby Emes taking 3 for 50. The run chase was again led by Mike Robertson with 58 and Rob Willoughby with 31, but it was the eighth wicket pairing of Lloyd Bowman and Kieran McKinna that edged Reed over the line, seven wickets down but with only 3 deliveries left. SUNDAY. I counted 7 past or present Reed Colts in the Hare Street & Hormead line-up in Sunday's friendly. The visitors closed on 172 for 8, Steve Hughes taking 4 for 33. But despite a sixty from Rich Barlow and thirties by Rob Lankester and MJE Baker, Reed were all out 4 runs short. COLTS: The Under 9s (1) won against Sawbridgeworth on Friday. U9s make it 3 in 3

Reed U9s 1 made it 3 wins out of 3 with a convincing victory over Braughing on Friday evening after the grounds staff (and willing parents!) did a fantastic job to fit the game in around the British summertime weather! Reed 1 again lost the toss and were asked to bat. Ethan Fox (19) and Rory Longland (27) again did a fantastic job setting the tone for the innings scoring freely, which when backed up by Josh (22) and Eddie Heslam (10) saw Reed well on their way to a big score. The hosts ended up on 329 with others chipping in along the way. In reply Braughing were always up against it particularly facing the strong Reed 1 bowling line up and they finished up on 233 with wickets coming from Josh Heslam (2), Rory Longland, Hugh Hollamby and Harrison and everyone else bowling very tightly. The benefits of the Reed team playing a season of Under 9s cricket at the ages of 6 - 7 clearly paying off as they are currently competing strongly still a year or more below the age group. Reed Press-on after Preston

Reed 1st XI versus Preston 1st XI. Regional Final, (Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Group), National Village Cup, 2019. Reed made short work of the Beds & Herts Regional Final by bowling out Preston for 104 in the 36th over then cracking 105 for 2 within 15 overs. Initially, Preston got off to a good start thanks to some powerful drives by James Stevens (23), but once he was snaffled by a diving Rob Lankester at backward point off Jack Tidey’s bowling, the visitors lost regular wickets although number 4, Morecroft put up some resistance with 27. Toby Fynn and the elder Tidey bowled a good line and length and this combined with some excellent ground fielding, put Preston under pressure. Tom Greaves and Mitchell Copper replaced them and snared 2 wickets each then Sean Tidey contributed another. Meanwhile, Jack Caine came on from the other end and cleaned up the tail taking an excellent 4 for 13. Reed’s openers got the innings off to a flying start with Richard Wharton hitting the first delivery, (which was a No Ball), for a six! Even though he fell soon after, Reed were without mercy as the belligerent Sean Tidey scored an array of shots round the Green in his 65. Rob Lankester was 27 not out when Reed overhauled Preston’s total with 8 wickets in hand. Stoke Green CC won the Buckinghamshire Final and will be Reed’s next opponents in the 5th Round. Cooper bombs Reed to victory

Reed 2s got back to winning ways after beating Stevenage 2s in a high scoring, rain reduced game at The Green, owing a significant debt to groundsman Richard Robertson in the process for working wonders to get the game on. Reed skipper Ed Garrott lost the toss and his side were asked to bat in a reduced 40 overs per side game. They lost Richard Barlow early, and despite some lovely shots, Richard Johnson also fell for 28 to leave Reed 57 for 2. Chris Jackson (27) and James Sandford (42) both batted well for Reed and took the score to 130 for 4 before Garrott and Rob Willoughby (16) then set about upping the pace. Garrott batted sublimely as he reached an unbeaten 50 as the score progressed towards 200. However the Reed innings got its real injection of pace when Mitchell Cooper came to the crease. He hit a swashbuckling 56 not out off of just 20 balls, including 6 "maximums". Cooper’s assault was brutal and gave Reed a daunting total of 248 for 4 in their 40 overs. Cooper (5-0-21-1) then took the new ball and snared an early Stevenage wicket, but the visitors continued to play their shots and kept up well with the rate. The introduction of Alex Kelly (8-1-49-2) did get Reed a couple of crucial breakthroughs but Stevenage continued to amass runs as they progressed towards 150. However the spin of Garrott (6-1-30-1) and Matt Bowles (7-0-32-2) and an excellent Richard Barlow run out was the key to halting the progress of Stevenage as they eventually fell 36 runs short, on 212 for 8. SUNDAY. NATIONAL VILLAGE CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP. Reed made short work of the Beds & Herts Regional Final by bowling out Preston for 104 in the 36th over then cracking 105 for 2 within 15 overs. Jack Caine took 4 for 13 for Reed with Mitchell Copper and Tom Greaves taking 2 each. Reed's innings was without mercy as the belligerent Sean Tidey scored an array of shots round the Green in his 65. Rob Lankester was 27 not out when Reed overhauled Preston by 8 wickets. Stoke Green won the Buckinghamshire Final and will be our next opponents at Reed on 23rd June. Locally, Foxton beat Eaton Socon to win the Cambs & Norfolk Group and will be at home to Worlington (Essex & Suffolk). SATURDAY. Reed Firsts maintain unbeaten run

Even without skipper, Tom Greaves, Reed's renowned bowling attack once again forced a victory when Flitwick seemed to be on target to halt their unbeaten run. Chasing 180, Rumesh Bhuddika (30) and David Powles (25) had doubled the host's score to 106-3 with nearly half of their allotted overs left. However, both were dismissed by Zac McGuigan and Toby Fynn - then Sean Tidey (3-9), Fynn (1-26) and Ed Wharton, who had made the initial breakthroughs with 2-31, conceded just 8 runs from the next 8 overs. As a result, Flitwick collapsed to 130 all out, including a sensational diving catch by Rob Lankester behind the stumps off the bowling of Jack Tidey. Mention should also be made of McGuigan who also bowled captain George Thurstance, their potential match winner, for 34. Reed were put in with the game reduced to 39 overs on a slow, damp outfield with a wicket conducive to Flitwick's spin attack.Therefore Wharton's customarily rapid 42 was particularly commendable, especially as he was caught one-handed on the boundary attempting a second maximum. It was then left to stand-in captain Lankester to marshal the innings with a patient 60, supported by a run-a-ball 28 from Stuart Smith and some lusty blows by the Tidey brothers. 180 for 8 proved to be easily defensible thanks to Reed's bowlers. Reed now lie second in the table, just 2 points behind Hoddesdon leading into the first of the "timed matches" against third placed Shenley Village. Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Then against Mildenhall away on Thursday Reed's U13s scored 112 for 6 with Sam Osborne compulsory retiring on 30 and Charlie Butler hitting 24 but to no avail as Mildenhall knocked off 114 for 5. Sam took 2 wickets and Charlie 1 but Alfie Cockburn also took 1 wicket and made 1 run out. William Archer held a catch too. On Friday evening, the Under 11s were over the Essex border at Wenden. Niners go head-to-head

Reed’s two Under 9s teams entertained the Colts' and All-Stars' parents at their regular training practice on Sunday morning at Reed in a high scoring encounter displaying the fine progress made by the age group consisting of children graduating from the All-Stars programme from the last two seasons. Reed 1 lost the toss and found themselves batting, however Ethan Fox relished the challenge hitting the ball to all parts scoring 33 during the 4 overs he batted. Other high scorers for Reed 1 on their way to an imposing total of 313 (Net) were Rory Longland (11) and Josh Heslam (9) and Eddie Heslam (10). The pick of the Reed 2 bowlers was Atharva Yadav with two wickets whilst Matthew Jackson, Zak Rouse and Lily Hall also took a wicket each. In reply Reed 2 also batted well but unfortunately were always up against it chasing a large score ending their innings on 273 (Net). Runs were shared around with Lily Hall top scoring with 9. Reed 1 wicket takers were Jon Green and Daniel Tallis with two each and Eddie Heslam with one. Match Report submitted by James Heslam.
