Reed Firsts maintain unbeaten run

Even without skipper, Tom Greaves, Reed's renowned bowling attack once again forced a victory when Flitwick seemed to be on target to halt their unbeaten run. Chasing 180, Rumesh Bhuddika (30) and David Powles (25) had doubled the host's score to 106-3 with nearly half of their allotted overs left. However, both were dismissed by Zac McGuigan and Toby Fynn - then Sean Tidey (3-9), Fynn (1-26) and Ed Wharton, who had made the initial breakthroughs with 2-31, conceded just 8 runs from the next 8 overs. As a result, Flitwick collapsed to 130 all out, including a sensational diving catch by Rob Lankester behind the stumps off the bowling of Jack Tidey. Mention should also be made of McGuigan who also bowled captain George Thurstance, their potential match winner, for 34. Reed were put in with the game reduced to 39 overs on a slow, damp outfield with a wicket conducive to Flitwick's spin attack. Therefore Wharton's customarily rapid 42 was particularly commendable, especially as he was caught one-handed on the boundary attempting a second maximum. It was then left to stand-in captain Lankester to marshal the innings with a patient 60, supported by a run-a-ball 28 from Stuart Smith and some lusty blows by the Tidey brothers. 180 for 8 proved to be easily defensible thanks to Reed's bowlers. Reed now lie second in the table, just 2 points behind Hoddesdon leading into the first of the "timed matches" against third placed Shenley Village. Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Thurstance thwarts Wharton

Ed Wharton destroyed Flitwick's batting order taking 6-41 from his 20 overs, including a devastating spell of 6-4 either side of tea. This included the host's big gun, George Thurstance, but he could not account for his brother, Harry, who held the tail together with a defiant 89 not out. He frustrated Reed's bowlers, putting on over 100 runs for the eighth and ninth wickets, even surviving the 24 overs delivered in the final hour. Earlier, Reed had stuttered to 85-4 at lunch, having used up over half of their overs, only Rob Lankester looking comfortable against Flitwick's new ball attack on an unusually green wicket. He and Stuart Smith (44) then put together a half century partnership which swung the momentum Reed's way until he was stumped one short of a deserved 50. Just like last week, Smith provided the support for Tom Greaves (31) and Sean Tidey (23 not out) to accelerate the scoring just achieving 3 batting bonus points with a final total of 225-8. This looked more than enough for a victory until Thurstance steered Flitwick to 162-8 and left Reed frustrated with a winning draw and 16 points. Match report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Big win for Reed 1sts

Reed secured an important win against Flitwick on Saturday which all but secures Championship Cricket at the Green for next season and allows them to focus on the possibility of a top 4 finish with a good end to the season. Flitwick won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a good wicket despite the rain on Friday and before the game. Although there was a little bit of encouragement for opening bowlers Ed Wharton (1-47) and Toby Fynn (1-54) this largely proved the case and Reed were pleased to see the back of Bedfordshire cricketer George Thurstance for just 15 thanks to Fynn. The middle overs proved to be fairly even with the run rate not getting out of control but the visitors looking to build a decent total at 116-1 off 25 overs with Russell (57) and Harry Thurstance (38) batting well. However, the introduction of Sean Tidey (4-44) seemed to swing the game in Reed's favour a little as he bowled a good spell including two quick wickets which combined with Mutucumarana (1-41) removing overseas player Nawela at 137-4 Reed were looking on top particularly given the sometimes fragile Flitwick batting. However, the visitors then got on top of the Reed bowlers despite Tidey and Wharton returning to good effect in the last 10 overs. Perrin and Malkani largely did the damage taking them to 247-7 off their 50 overs. Reed knew they would need to bat well to win the game but on a decent batting wicket the opportunity was there. Although losing the important wicket of William Heslam for 8, James Heslam and the nerveless Rob Lankester (31) got Reed off to a good start taking the score [...]
