Reed nearly pull off a miraculous victory over Hoddesdon
It was a case of finger nails being bitten to the quick in this match at The Green on Saturday. Hoddesdon won the toss and put the home team into bat. Reed found runs hard to come by on a slow pitch. Ed Wharton was the first wicket to fall bowled in the 7th over with the score on 12. The accurate bowling of the visitors continued to dry up the Reed scoring but any further wickets had to wait to the 17th over when Will Heslam fell with the score on 42. Wickets then fell regularly for the hosts and with James Heslam's dismissal, Reed were 81 for 5 with just over 12 overs left. Enter Mitchell Cooper who took an immediate liking to the Hoddesdon spinners, he hit 54 in 50 balls with 4 fours and four sixes in a 63-run partnership with Rich Wharton which brought a measure of respectability to Reed’s final score of 151 for 7 off their 45 overs. Hoddesdon set off quickly in their reply reaching 59 for 1 in their first ten overs. Toby Fynn (9-0-44-1) taking the wicket of Hoddesdon skipper Walters. A partnership of 54 between Broodryk and Clarke was eventually broken by Karl Ward (9-1-33-3), and within four overs the match had been changed as the visitors fell to 88 for 5. Skipper Tom Greaves (9-1-32-4) extracted turn and bounce on the now drying pitch. The collapse continued and Hoddesdon had fallen to 128 for 9. Reed sensed a marvellous victory. Rescue act in Radlett in vain
Reed travelled to Radlett for their latest match in the Premier Division of the Saracens Herts. League. Losing the toss on a day that looked more like one from March than late-August, Reed were asked to take first knock. The raw pace of Sanghera plus the left arm over of 15 year old Noah Cornwell kept runs at a premium in the early overs. Ed Wharton was the first to fall caught at deep mid-on for just 8. Will Heslam, Reed’s hero last week was struck on the helmet by a Sanghera bouncer and fell soon after for 4. Wickets fell regularly and Reed were teetering at 43 for 6 in just the 14th Over. Mitchell Cooper and Sean Tidey set about rebuilding the innings. They punished anything loose and short and pushed the score over 100, with the first batting point in sight, Tidey was stumped off the bowling of Josh De Caires, the son of former England Captain Michael Atherton, for 28. Cooper continued on, striking 6 fours and 3 sixes before edging behind for 48 off 61 balls. Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn added 15 for the last wicket as Reed were dismissed for 145 in the 37th Over. A more than respectable recovery from the position they were in earlier! With Jack Tidey unable to bowl, Reed opened their attack with Ed Wharton (9-2-29-2) and Toby Fynn. Wharton soon struck taking the edge of Chatfield’s bat for a great catch behind by Sean Tidey with the score on 11. Heslam serves up a tasty main course against Welwyn Garden City
Reed nearly pulled off the result of the season as they fell just seven runs short against Welwyn Garden City. Winning the toss, Reed inserted their hosts on a blustery day and were soon rewarded when Jack Tidey trapped former England International Owais Shah for just 4 with the score on 5. However, Tidey limped off injured after bowling just 4.3 overs. Welwyn Garden set about rebuilding with Champion and Nijar, they had completed their 50-run partnership, when Matt Giblin (8-0-38-1) took the edge of Champion’s bat for Sean Tidey to take the catch behind the stumps. Nijar soon followed as Will Heslam pouched a catch off skipper Tom Greaves (8-0-53-2). Welwyn Garden skipper Blacktopp and Rizvi built a solid partnership taking the score over 100, before Toby Fynn picked up two quick wickets (127 for 5). Rizvi shared partnerships with Nolan and Shay Emerton, Fynn picking up his 3rd wicket (9-1-29-3) with Nolan’s dismissal. Rob Lankester was instrumental in bringing Welwyn Garden’s innings to a close taking 3 for 13 in just 3 overs with his medium pace, including the prize wicket of Rizvi for 61. Sean Tidey had a good day returning behind the stumps with two catches and a stumping. Welwyn Garden were all out for 227 off exactly 45 overs. Reed’s opening pair of Ed Wharton and Will Heslam set off at a reasonable pace in reply. They punished any bad bowling and cleared the boundary on several occasions particularly Wharton with 2 fours and 2 sixes in his 29 before he fell with the score on 48. Reed earn their first Premier League win in great style
Reed travelled down the A1 to face North Mymms in their latest League encounter. Losing the toss, Reed were put into the field on a sultry day. Opening bowlers Ed Wharton and Jack Tidey bowled excellent lines to keep the scoring down. Tidey (9-4-9-1) snared the first wicket in the eighth over caught at mid-on by Jack Caine with the score on 19 for 1. Wharton (9-0-28-1) was soon in on the act with a great slip catch from Sean Tidey (24 for 2). The runs dried up as both bowlers bowled right through their allowance of nine overs. Sean Tidey came into the attack and took a wicket in his first over (39 for 3), both Tidey and Mitchell Cooper (5-0-26-3) turned the screw even more leaving the hosts on 64 for 7, with less than 19 overs of their innings left. Captain Wynne and Owen Millard doubled the score, before Sean Tidey (9-0-39-3) took his third wicket. Two wickets from Matt Giblin (7.2-0-25-2) wrapped up the tail. The home side all out for 152 in the last over. Brothers Ed and Richard Wharton opened Reed’s reply and hit 22 inside three overs before Richard was adjudged lbw, the first of skipper Wynne’s five wickets (9-0-43-5). Will Heslam came in and continued the brisk start. Ed Wharton then became the first of three wickets to fall on 37. Heslam and Jack Caine set about restoring the innings, Heslam fell to a catch at mid-wicket (56 for 5). Reed fall just short despite a Tidey performance
Reed entertained Potters Bar at The Green in their latest Premier League match. Winning the toss, Reed put their opponents in. They didn’t have to wait long for the first wicket when Palmer was bowled offering no shot to Jack Tidey. Hussain became Tidey’s second wicket edging to keeper Rich Wharton with the score on 31 and when Ed Wharton added the wicket of Patel with a superb catch at midwicket by skipper Rob Lankester, the visitors were struggling at 44-3. Pat Scott completed his 50 for the visitors but fell to Tidey two balls later, his brother Charlie fell first ball and the quick bowler completed his 5-wicket haul when Wijesuriya fell playing on, Potters Bar were 89 for 6. The opposition’s overseas player Miguel Nunes-Macahado came to the wicket and began to build Potters Bar recovery, despite losing James Scott with the score at 112, he shared a 57 run partnership with Chapman as they took the score beyond 200. He eventually went for 105 in just 83 balls. Potters Bar were eventually dismissed for 242 in over 43. Tidey’s figures of 9-2-37-5 the stand-out of the Reed bowling attack, the ground fielding too was out of the top drawer. Reed began their reply with two lofty blows by Ed Wharton before he was caught at point. Brother Richard and skipper Lankester batted sensibly punishing anything loose. The 50 partnership came up off of 82 balls. Lankester eventually fell for 31, James Heslam went lbw with the score on 82 for 3 with 20 overs already gone.
