Saturday SHPCL: The 1st XI came close to victory away at Welwyn Garden City when chasing 227 all out; Reed ended on 220 for 9. Toby Fynn and Rob Lankester had taken 3 wickets each but Reed's star batsman was Will Heslam who was 9th man out after scoring 111. At The Green, Southgate Adelaide could not contend with Rupert Martin who returned 5 for 28 as their innings petered all out for 87, some 143 below Reed's Second XI's total of 230 for 7. Chris Jackson was again the host's mainstay by scoring 81. Once more at the Freman Oval, Reed 3rds notched-up in excess of 190 and this time were on the winning side. George Garrott scored 70, Scott Nash 40 and Under 15, Charlie Waters, 23, closing on 192 for 8. But the bowling honours went to young Will Archer, the fourteen-year-old claiming a superb 5 for 18 as Letchworth Garden City were bowled out for 98. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. Sunday: Players across the age-range from 14 to 66 along with Smith family relatives, friends and well-wishers gathered to celebrate popular Vice-President Graham Smith's 70th Birthday. Headlines: Week ending 16th August

If it can be newsworthy, then only 7 fixtures in the entire Herts League programme were concluded on Saturday; none of them involved Reed teams. Therefore, after 5 weeks and with 4 more to go, Reed 1st XI are in 5th spot in the Premier Division; the Seconds are joint top in 3B; the Third team occupy 7th position in 10A. However, I remind you that there will be no promotion or relegation this season. (And no Prize Money so we are told!) Sunday's friendly against North Harrow also fell foul to the weather. PGB Hon. Sean Tidey took 3 wickets and Matt Giblin 2 as the hosts were all out for 152. Reed made short work of the run-chase as Jack Caine (31) and Stuart Smith (24 not out) supported Cooper’s innings to win by 4 wickets. The Seconds continued their 100% record by bundling Sandridge out for 148 then losing only 3 wickets in reply. Julien Fynn led with 5 wickets and Karl Ward took 4. Tom Greaves scored an eighty and Chris Jackson was 32 not out when the winning runs came. At the Freman Oval, the Willoughby brothers, Rob (65) and Kieren (44 not out), were instrumental in the Third Team’s total of 194 for 9. George Garrott chipped in with 25. The wickets were shared between Garrott, Greg McKinnell, Will Archer and Charlie Walters but they could not prevent Rickmansworth reaching their target with 4 wickets and 2 overs in-hand. Sunday: The friendly against Little Hadham ended as a Tie - no super overs in this format! Little Hadham batted first and posted 152. Ben Mansfield got a wicket in the first over then Joe Graves and Will Archer both bowled very well getting 2 wickets each. Reed's runs from Matt Giblin (32), Will Heslam (33), and Will Archer (31 not out) who came very close to hitting the winning runs but unfortunately there was a run out when the scores were level with the last man in. Reed earn their first Premier League win in great style

Reed travelled down the A1 to face North Mymms in their latest League encounter. Losing the toss, Reed were put into the field on a sultry day. Opening bowlers Ed Wharton and Jack Tidey bowled excellent lines to keep the scoring down. Tidey (9-4-9-1) snared the first wicket in the eighth over caught at mid-on by Jack Caine with the score on 19 for 1. Wharton (9-0-28-1) was soon in on the act with a great slip catch from Sean Tidey (24 for 2). The runs dried up as both bowlers bowled right through their allowance of nine overs. Sean Tidey came into the attack and took a wicket in his first over (39 for 3), both Tidey and Mitchell Cooper (5-0-26-3) turned the screw even more leaving the hosts on 64 for 7, with less than 19 overs of their innings left. Captain Wynne and Owen Millard doubled the score, before Sean Tidey (9-0-39-3) took his third wicket. Two wickets from Matt Giblin (7.2-0-25-2) wrapped up the tail. The home side all out for 152 in the last over. Brothers Ed and Richard Wharton opened Reed’s reply and hit 22 inside three overs before Richard was adjudged lbw, the first of skipper Wynne’s five wickets (9-0-43-5). Will Heslam came in and continued the brisk start. Ed Wharton then became the first of three wickets to fall on 37. Heslam and Jack Caine set about restoring the innings, Heslam fell to a catch at mid-wicket (56 for 5). Stuart Smith joined Caine and played an anchor role as Caine reached 31 before also being adjudged lbw. This left Mitchell Cooper 41 not out (in 33 balls) to join Smith 24 not out and they continued [...]

PGB ************************************************************************* About this Event. The laws of cricket, like the laws of the land, aim at a sort of justice or balancing between different factions. The purpose behind cricket's laws, and behind changes in them, is often to calibrate the balance in the game between batsmen and bowlers, between attack and defence, between safety and risk. Cricketing lawmakers are interested in the overall appeal of the game to players and spectators alike. Join Mike Brearley as he talks about The Spirit of Cricket, his new book which considers issues across the game such as 'Mankading', the Australian ball-tampering scandal, intimidatory bowling, sledging and mental disintegration - as well as the notion of the spirit of the game for umpires, groundsmen, administrators, media and spectators - as well, of course, as for players. Mike Brearley OBE was educated at Cambridge, where he read classics and moral sciences, and captained the university. He played for Middlesex County Cricket Club intermittently from 1961 to 1983, captaining the side from 1971 to 1982. He first played for England in 1976 and captained the side from 1977 to 1980, winning seventeen test matches and losing only four. He was recalled to the captaincy in 1981 for the Ashes home series, leading England to one of their most famous victories. Since retiring [...]

REED EDGED IN VILLAGE CUP THRILLER!

Reed fell just short in an entertaining Village Cup match at The Green on Sunday. Due to Reed's promotion to the Herts Premier League, no first team players could be selected for this year's competition despite Reed being the defending champions. Having won the toss skipper Ed Garrott put the visitors into bat. Redbourn set off at a good pace punishing anything loose from the opening bowlers Julien Fynn (7-0-41-3) and Rupert Martin (6-0-34-0). Fynn trapped Ed Hales lbw for 32 (52-1). Cutler and Will Hales then set a 109 partnership which threatened to take the game away from Reed. A great piece of fielding from Garrott eventually ran out Hales. Another 50 run partnership was broken by Karl Ward (8-0-37-2) . A flurry of late wickets left Redbourn on 237-7 at the end of their 40 overs. Reed set about the chase against the young Redbourn opening attack steadily, Rob Willoughby was the first to fall with the score on 28, Rich Barlow soon followed for 18. When skipper Garrott and then Michael Robertson fell, Reed were wobbling at 71-4. Ward and Scott Nash now began to up the run rate, Ward fell for 42, Fynn now joined Nash and they brought Reed back into the contest with a 57 partnership. Nash fell trying to hit his third consecutive six. Fynn continued with some great shots before falling for 35. Reed now needed more than ten an over. An unbeaten 23 from MJE Baker with help from both Martin and Matt Bowles left Reed just 28 runs short of their target. RESULT: REDBOURN 237 for 7 in 40 Overs beat REED 209 for 8 in 40 Overs by 28 runs. Match Report submitted by [...]

The 2nd XI scored 280 for 7 on The Green with Chris Jackson scoring 98 and Julien Fynn reaching an undefeated half-century.
