Delivered by Hertfordshire Association of Cricket Officials Whilst cricket is uppermost in our minds, the Hertfordshire Association of Cricket Officials (HACO) have announced the winter programme of Umpires and Scorers courses. The Hertfordshire Cricket Network recognises that Officiating is such a fundamental & important part of our game at whatever version or level of the cricket is being participated in and prides itself in the support and opportunities, provided through HACO, that are on offer for the current officials and also those who are looking to make the move into the field. As well as supporting individuals with their own aspirations of progressing through to officiating, we recognise the requirements of our leagues regarding match officials. We are sure you will agree that the greater number of qualified and competent officials we have, the more enjoyable cricket will become. Further information regarding Hertfordshire Association of Cricket Officials, please check out the website www.haco.org.uk ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Umpires Finished playing the game? Still want to stay involved? Then why not take up umpiring and still see all the action in the middle! The Herts Association of Cricket Officials run courses throughout the close season to ensure we have a constant flow of new and up skilled umpires to support the game. Once qualified, become a panel umpire, and stand in Saracens Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League matches or just support your local cricket club by umpiring on a weekend. The latest AGM in November 2015 saw several changes in the Club’s General Committee and Officers. Most notably was that of Tom Greaves becoming Club Captain after James Heslam’s successful 8-year reign. James himself took over from father John as the Fundraising Officer and thus remained on the Committee. Ian Osborne who had joined only earlier in 2015 stepped into the vacancy of Colts Liaison Officer that Peter Wholley had performed for a number of years in conjunction with his dual role of Fixture Secretary. Peter continued with the Fixtures. Mike Robertson had lost-out in the vote for Committee members “Without Portfolio” at the AGM but when some issues arose about the withdrawal of our storage space at Freman College, Mike was co-opted onto the Committee to act as liaison. In May, Mitchell Cooper resigned from the Committee for family reasons and William Heslam was invited to replace him as the Under 25 representative. To date, the General Committee has met on five occasions with a 68% attendance. The newly-introduced Executive Committee met six times with an attendance rate of 76%. I thank all past and present club members who have served on the Committee. Without them, the Club, as we know and enjoy it, would cease to function. A major portion of business at that AGM was to accept the revised Constitution. This created significant changes to the running of the Club by introducing an Executive Committee, (which is entrusted to manage the Club), and a Playing Sub-Committee under Paul Watts’s chairmanship and which is responsible for Team Selection, Disciplinary issues and choosing annual awards winners. Also, we formalised the position of Membership Secretary as a separate role. Cilla Robertson has been responsible for [...]
1st XI REPORT 2016 The 1st XI had a mixed 2016 season, starting well, only losing once in the first 5 games to eventual league champions Letchworth. However, this run of good form wasn't to last as inconsistency with the bat and some weak availability meant we were far from our best at various points in the season. New signing, Minor-County opening bowler Ed Wharton, proved his worth throughout the season consistently picking up wickets ably supported by Toby Fynn, Mitchell Cooper, Sean Tidey and myself. The main men with the bat this year were William Heslam, Richard Wharton, James Heslam and Chris Jackson who all scored important match winning runs throughout the season, particularly Will and Rich. Youngster Rob Lankester also impressed in his first season in the first team, proving the colts system at the club is really working well and producing quality players. Without setting the world on fire this year we have comfortably maintained our position in the Herts. Championship Division, which is pleasing as the standard seems to be improving year on year. Good news has come from the Doctors in the last couple of weeks, meaning that Jack Tidey will be fit to start the 2017 season to open the bowling with Ed, and I feel they will strike off a very dangerous partnership next season, backed up by all the guys that have done well this year. With hard work in the nets over the winter and a strong pre-season there is no reason why we shouldn't be pushing for a Top 2 spot next year and go for promotion to the Premier League. We are always on the lookout for players that could strengthen the team, but [...]

SATURDAY: Great for ducks! Cancelled because of the rain. SUNDAY: Not so many Ducks today; 1 on each side. For a bit of symmetry, there was also 1 ton on each side too. For Reed, who were chasing Waresley's 231 for 4, it was Mike Robertson's turn to notch-up a hard-hit hundred. MJEB scored 43 but amazingly this final match of the season ended in a tie. Expect a full Match Report to follow soon. PGB
SATURDAY: Rain affected most of the matches on the final Saturday of the Herts League. It was so widespread that out of a programme of 131 fixtures, more than 100 matches were rained-off during the afternoon. Added to that, a further 7 matches were conceded throughout the divisions. 1st XI: Home versus Chorleywood. Reed scored 193 all-out; Ed Wharton and Rob Lankester being the major contributors. The visitors' innings ended at 15 for 0. The Firsts finished 6th in the Championship Division. 2nd XI: Away versus Harpenden. Reed scored 167 all-out in a reduced innings of 35 overs; George Garrott got past 45, Matt Sampson and Phil Frenay scored 30s. The rain came when Harpenden were 75 for 3. After three consecutive promotions, the Seconds had to be satisfied with 5th place in Division 4B. 3rd XI: Away versus Old Elizabethans. Reed scored 113 all-out with Peter Baker battling it out for 33 and Mike Robertson hitting 34. Old Es lost a solitary wicket to Neil Haslam who returned figures of 5 overs, 3 maidens, 1 wicket for 8 runs as the hosts romped home by 9 wickets in 20 overs, and gaining a deserved promotion. For the Thirds it does mean relegation from Division 8A this season. 4th XI: Home versus Harpenden. Reed scored 190 for 9 in their 40 overs, 75 of them by Paul Garrott who was supported by Bill Mansfield. Harpenden replied with 115 for 3 but because they faced 21 overs before it rained, it constituted a match, thus giving them a victory on a faster run-rate. The Fourths ended the season in 4th position in the Regional Division B East. SUNDAY: Joe Graves passed 50 for the first time, [...]
SATURDAY: With one week of the Herts League programme remaining, the positions of the Club's Teams in their respective divisions are as follows: Firsts: 6th in the Championship; Seconds: 5th in 4B; Thirds: 10th in 8A; Fourths: 4th in Regional B East. Here is what happened today. Firsts: Scored 132 in response to 204 for 8 by Luton Town & Indians. Toby Fynn took 3 wickets and Ed Garrott scored a forty. Seconds: Won by 11 runs in the gloom at Reed. Phil Frenay made 112 and Richard Johnson 66 with some impetus lower down the order coming from Matt Sampson and Karl Ward bolstering the total in the final overs of the innings to 289 for 5. Northampton Exiles made a great run-chase but ended on 278 for 6. Thirds: Could only muster 120 all-out with James Crouchman scoring his first ever half century. It was never enough although Berkhamsted went from a comfortable 110 for 2 to a slightly disturbing 123 for 6 before they got over the line. 2 wickets each for Owen Hughes, Jack Childs and Matt Giblin. Fourths: Almost up with the asking rate throughout, Reed managed to score 167 for 7, falling 16 runs short at Tewin who had totalled 183 for 9. Paul Garrott was 70 not out at the end. Matt Yates, Steve Hughes and Neil Haslam took 2 wickets apiece during the afternoon session. SUNDAY: The Tour match against Wetherby (Yorks) was cancelled. The "Reedsters" went to Headingley to watch Yorks versus Surrey and met-up with Rob Key for a chat! Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. PGB
