History of Reed Cricket Club, 1956 to 2019 (inclusive)

Because there will be no cricketing activity until at least the 11th July, all Matches, Practices and Social Events listed in the Calendar are Postponed or Cancelled. They are too numerous to indicate that on each individual entry. When we have something concrete, I shall update you. In the meantime, to keep you occupied, here is a (not quite so) "Brief History of Reed Cricket Club" compiled by Life-Member, Steve Dunn, who was President of the Club at the time of its Golden Anniversary in 2006. It has been updated several times since to recognise the Club's triumphs in the National Village Cup and no doubt will have to be revised again after this amazing year of 2020! +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Early Days. Although cricket has been played on and off at Reed for perhaps up to 100 years or so, it was in 1956 that the present cricket club was formed. Older village residents recount that both before and after the Second World War matches were played in the middle meadows at the back of The Cabinet public house. The old oak tree (still standing) provided the gathering point for spectators who invariably included Charlie and Bertha Gilbey, comfortable in their deck chairs and keeping score. The club formally sprang to life in 1956 from a suggestion made by Joe Shepherd (our first club captain) to some of the teenagers who went to the youth club that met in the Mission Hall (now a house) on the High Street. Joe asked the boys whether they fancied playing cricket and this led to them searching out what was left of the old equipment, a few pads, bats etc which had been used for those few years after [...]

Latest News – 28th April

Hertfordshire League representatives have been in conference with the ECB during the last week. Their latest information sheet includes this:- "FORMAT. Since the Government have yet to indicate how and when the lockdown may be loosened, we can only speculate on what kind of season we may have at the moment. However, we do think it is important to, at least, have an exit strategy and prepare for what will inevitably be a truncated season so that all clubs will know what sort of cricket we may be playing. First of all, we have decided that there will be no cricket until at least 11th July giving us no more than half a season." ================================================================================================ To assist formulating their plans, SHPCL will be surveying Clubs for our views. We await their Questionnaire. PGB, Hon. Secretary, Reed CC

Coronavirus and Reed CC – Temporary measures

Sent on behalf of Reed Cricket Club General Committee. ===================================================================================== The Cricket Club will still have bills to pay during this crisis and there will be a lack of income from Subscriptions, the Bar and Match fees, etc., which will have an affect on our financial well-being. Therefore, your Committee has decided to ask you the following about Membership Subscriptions. Donation: We are appealing to you to please consider donating a sum up to a figure of £25 in lieu of your Membership Subscription. This will be your contribution to the Club to help us keep it running in these first few months of the summer. We cannot impose making a donation on you, but we do invite you to. Already paid? Some of you have already paid the full Subscription, either as Player or Non-Playing Member. Should you want a refund of all or part of your Subs, please contact the Treasurer, Bethan Smith on 01763 260446, to work out details whether you wish the Club to retain part as your donation, or to be refunded the full amount. Later: If we are lucky enough to fulfil any fixtures later in the summer, we will revisit this subject and make adjustments as necessary. I shall leave it for you to make your own decisions whether to make donation or not. Membership Form: However, we do require ALL existing Members to please complete and submit a Membership Form. An electronic version can be found in the Members Area of the Club’s website, www.reedcricketclub.co.uk This is necessary so that you are covered by insurance and complies with Data Protection Regulations. Through the lens at Lord’s: A Photographer’s Eye View

The 2020 Fixture Card will not now be published, (well, certainly not in its original format)! Here is an article I asked Ann & Paul Garrott to write describing their day in the September sunshine at Lord's. ******************************************************************************************** On a glorious sunny mid-September morning, we arrived at Lord’s, the home of cricket. Reed CC had once again made it to this illustrious, iconic venue to challenge Houghton Main for the National Village Cup trophy. Ann and I were honoured to have been asked to take charge of the photography for the day, as we had done two years ago. We waited at the Grace Gates for the Reed players to arrive. Skipper Tom Greaves, followed by the rest of the team made their way through the turnstiles and past security. There was nervous excitement etched across their faces, reality of where they were and the day that lay ahead. The glistening replica World Cup near the entrance acting as a symbol of what had been and could be achieved. The supporters arrived soon after and it was surreal seeing people that are normally seen wandering around the boundary at Reed (the second home of cricket!) queuing with their picnic hampers to come to show their support. Having access into the pavilion was an honour in itself; to climb the stairs that the great and good have climbed and not feel daunted by Viv Richards staring down at you from the wall. To see “Reed CC” proudly displayed outside the changing room near a portrait of Ian Botham was another ‘pinch yourself’ moment. The view from the balcony could not have been more perfect, with the sun beaming down on the hallowed turf. The iconic Father [...]

The Cricketer Village Cup Draw (2020 season)

Reed Cricket Club will open their title defence in The Cricketer Village Cup 2020 with a visit to Hertfordshire rivals Redbourn after the draw for the competition, (better known formerly as The National Village Cup), took place at Lord’s on Wednesday. Reed – whose 2019 win was their third time lifting the trophy in eight seasons – is one of 308 clubs who learned their fixtures for the 49th edition of the knockout tournament, which is set to open on May 3. Awarded a Bye in Round 1, Reed will visit Redbourn on Sunday the 17th May in the Second Round. However, its recent promotion to Hertfordshire Premier League Cricket means Reed will no longer be permitted to field first-team players, which could prove good news for the likes of last year’s runners-up Houghton Main. Their first-round draw involves a visit to Kippax in the West & South Yorkshire portion of the draw. To determine the fixtures, The Cricketer‘s editor Simon Hughes was joined in MCC’s committee room by Middlesex President Mike Selvey, George Redfern from tournament sponsors Pipers Crisps, and Mike Hartwell of the Lord’s Taverners charity. The full draw can be seen at www.nationalvillagecup.com go to MATCH CENTRE, then FIXTURES and click on the Groups. If Reed progresses successfully to the National Round, (Round 5 on the 28th June), we will visit the Regional winners of Essex & Suffolk. Wednesday evenings at the Clubhouse + Indoor net dates (Seniors and Colts)

A reminder that Reed CC’s Howard Marshall Pavilion is open for business every Wednesday evening from 1930hrs onwards in the winter months. Come and have a chat, put the world to rights, watch soccer on the TV, throw a dart or two (or three!), play pool, cards or table skittles or simply enjoy the comfortable surroundings in the lounge bar. Bottled beers, lagers and ciders are on sale at “winter prices” (meaning cheaper than normal); plus soft drinks and nibbles such as crisps and peanuts, some, (I am reliably informed), at even further reduced prices. Every Wednesday evening through to April – when the cricket should begin outdoors with some friendlies (and beer prices go up)! Fixtures have been added to the website calendar. The dates of the Village Cup Rounds are also included although the draw is not expected to take place until mid-February. Click on “View All Events” on the right of this homepage on the RCC website then choose the months you want to look at. Friendlies will begin on 18th April, Reed host a Group Final of the Herts T20 on 2nd May, the 1st Round of the Village Cup is on 3rd May, then the Herts League commences on Saturday the 9th May. The league season will end on 5th September. Before all that, there are Indoor Nets for senior players, (i.e., 16 years and older), at Burloes Farm, Royston on every Sunday in March (1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th) plus two sessions at Melbourn Village College on Mondays 16th and 30th March - see the "Events" for times. A fee of £5 per person per session will be charged. For Under 12 and Non-County Under 15 Colts, there [...]
