Garrott innings sees the 3rds to victory

On the hottest day of the year so far, Reed 3rd XI hosted second place Rickmansworth III at the Freman Oval. The hosts won the toss and opted to bowl, hoping to avoid the forecast late afternoon heat. Rickmansworth openers Langley (42) and Raz Khan (68) started steadily despite accurate bowling from Owen Hughes (5-1-24-0) and Julien Fynn (9-3-34-1). The pair continued to build on their foundation during the first spell of left-armer Matt Yates (9-0-36-0), however the introduction of Robert Willoughby (9-0-34-4), bowling in tandem with Steve Hughes (9-0-56-0) saw the breakthrough when Langley succumbed to an arm ball from Willoughby. This became the start of Willoughby’s rampage as; next bowling Abbas (1) then snatching a catch off his own bowling to dismiss Adeel Khan (10). The big wicket came when Willoughby trapped Raz Khan lbw, finishing his well crafted innings. Shah (21) and Yousuf (22) looked to up the run rate as the innings headed into the later overs. Both batsmen played aggressively until Shah was caught by Steve Hughes off the bowling of Robertson (4-0-41-1). His replacement, Mohammed (29) continued in the same vein until Fynn bowled Yousuf, and Mohammed was run out by the Reed captain Rhodri Hughes. Butt (5) and Harvey (1) closed out the innings, with Rickmansworth finishing on 231 for 7 from their 45 overs. Reed’s response began smoothly with openers Paul Garrott (80) and Richard Johnson (57) patiently waiting to put away the bad ball. With Reed on 114 from 19 overs Johnson was caught and bowled by Adeel Khan (7-0-1-46). Willoughby (33) then joined Garrott at the crease, with the two again building a strong partnership until Willoughby was bowled by Harvey (9-1-30-1). Garrott continued strongly, [...]

Reed bowlers rout Ampthill

Ampthill must have regretted opting to bat first as Reed's bowlers revelled in the sunshine, reducing them to 47-8 after 23 overs. The early damage was done by the opening pace attack of Ed Wharton (3-20) and Jack Tidey (2-15). both bowlers repeatedly beating the bat and tying down the batsmen. There was no respite from Tom Greaves and Zac McGuigan, who took a wicket apiece, with the latter also exacting a sharp run out when the batsman momentarily left his crease. With four ducks in a row the home side were in absolute disarray. Skipper, Will Sneath, and keeper, Warwick Bradfield then showed grit and determination to hold out for a further 22 overs, virtually doubling the score in the process, until the latter was brilliantly run out by Rob Lankester. Toby Fynn immediately skittled the last man in, leaving Ampthill 91 all out. It took Reed just 18 overs to pass their total, with Ed Wharton again the destroyer racing to 32 with three boundaries and two maximums. Zac McGuigan (11) and Rob Lankester (22) kept up the momentum until both were dismissed with the score on 71.Thus it was left to Matt Sampson (20 not out) with some text book drives and a towering six to finish the game with the loss of only 3 wickets. Reed have now won 7 of their 8 games and move up to second with fellow high fliers, Hoddesdon, visiting the Green next Saturday for a chance to catch Shenley Village at the top of the table. Headlines; Week ending 30th June

SATURDAY (SHPCL): This was a genuine 90-point day. All three teams won their respective battles, all by chasing-down targets and each having plenty of wickets in-hand. The Firsts had Ampthill all out for 91 in their All-Day game which lasted all of 64 overs, eighteen of which was all that Reed needed to knock them off. Ed Wharton had a good all-round day by taking 3 wickets and scoring a brisk 32. Matt Sampson and Rob Lankester contributed twenties and Reed won by 7 wickets. On The Green, the Second XI bowled Flamstead out for 161 in the 22nd over, Matt Giblin taking 4 wickets. In reply, Phil Frenay and Richard Barlow notched-up half-centuries with Chris Jackson supporting Barlow towards the end. Reed's innings lasted until their 28th over when they cruised home by 9 wickets. With both of those matches all done and dusted by mid-afternoon, most of the Reed players joined the regular supporters group down at the Freman Oval to cheer-on the Thirds in their pursuit of Rickmansworth's challenging score of 231 for 7, Rob Willoughby taking 4 for 34. Richard Johnson (57) and Paul Garrott (80) did most of the work and Rob Willoughby helped with 34. Reed had 6 wickets in-hand when they overhauled the target in the 42nd over. SUNDAY: In the friendly against Forest Gate Reed unfortunately came second! Reed batted first with Tom Greaves scoring 83, Zac McGuigan, 35, and Marcus Martin and Ollie Sayers both passing 20. Reed were bowled out for 201 in the 33rd over. In reply, Will Green bowled 4 very tidy overs taking 2 for 14, Sayers also picked up a wicket. However, the visitors knocked-off the required runs in 32 overs. [...]

Chorleywood out-spun by ‘Universe Bowles’

Some much-needed sunshine at the Green made the decision an easy one for Reed 2nds when they won the toss and elected to bat. Opener Phil Frenay returned to the squad after his weeks in the sun, and was joined at the top of the order by the youngest of the Martin brothers, Fergus. Also making guest appearances for the 2nds this week were familiar faces William Dobson and Simon Jackson. Both openers got off to a great start, and Frenay scored freely and quickly, picking up where he left off from his last innings at Sawbridgeworth. Martin played more conservatively, but also looked in great touch, supporting Frenay in an unbeaten century stand for the first wicket. There was talk of a huge total from the Reed squad, with predicted totals well in excess of 300, before Frenay fell for 78, LBW. Chris Jackson was in next, and as usual batted confidently, continuing to build the total in partnership with Martin. Martin fell bowled, just short of his 50. Club captain Tom Greaves was next to join in adding the runs, having demoted himself to the 2s whilst nursing a back injury, which gradually eased up as he progressed with his innings. When Greaves fell, it was left to Jackson (51) and the rest of the Reed middle order (Dobson, Baker, Ward and Bowles) to all chip in, finishing in a strong position at 256 for 6. Opening the bowling against the Chorleywood response were Karl Ward and Matt Giblin. Despite both bowling some good lines, the pitch offered little in support, nor was the ball moving in the air which meant the Chorleywood openers were able to get off to a solid start. [...]

Thirds collapse against Hoddesdon

Reed III’s headed to the idyllic Roydon Cricket club to face Hoddesdon IV. On winning the toss, Reed opted to bowl, hoping to use the good weather to their advantage. Joe Graves (9-3-18-4) opened up down the hill, with Ian Roberts (3-1-11-0) starting off at the other end. The Hoddesdon openers Savanhu (13) and Brooks (17) began aggressively picking up some early runs. Having bowled just 3 overs, Roberts succumbed to a knee industry, with Neil Haslam (9-2-24-0) replacing him from the pavilion end. Graves became the first bowler to strike, cleaning up Savanhu. Graves continued his relentless attack, clean bowling Hunt (8), Brown (0) and Harrison (1). Hoddesdon lost another wicket when Brookes failed to make ground and was run out by Mike Robertson. Despite being 45-5, the home side refused to collapse, with Welsby (25) and Maughan (10) stabilising the innings. The introduction of Mike Juckes to the attack immediately reaped reward when Maughan was caught by Graves. The biggest stand of the innings then proceeded, as Welsby continued stoically, while Draisey (30) looked to further build the total. As the innings drew on Matt Yates (9-2-32-2) and Jukes began to pick up wickets, with Graves catching Welsby off the bowling of Yates, then Juckes picking up his second wicket with Draisey caught behind by Bill Mansfield. Yates snagged Cowner (16) with a caught and bowled, with Jukes taking the final wicket of Osbourne (1). Hoddesdon all out for 161, having made a sterling recovery. Reed began their chase at a pedestrian pace, with the first wicket falling as Peter Baker (0) was bowled by Savanhu (6.3-2-6-3). Richard Johnson (24), looking comfortable, kept the scoreboard ticking over, supported by Gareth Thomas (4), until [...]

Stoke stroked out!

Reed played host to Buckinghamshire Champions Stoke Green on Sunday at the Green in the last 32 of the National Village Cup knock-out competition. In front of a good crowd, Reed skipper Tom Greaves won the toss and elected to field. Toby Fynn and Jack Tidey opened the bowling for the home side, and it couldn’t have got off to a better start, Fynn having opener Parmar well caught by Greaves for a duck from the 3rd ball of the day. This set the tone for the innings with a superb bowling and fielding display from the two-time champions. Stoke Green were reduced to 18 for 5 once Tidey (8-1-18-1) and Fynn (8-1-16-4) had bowled out. Reed allrounder Mitchell Cooper was introduced to the attack along with Greaves and although they looked to be troubling the batsman, the Stoke Green middle order rebuilt well. Having got to 57 for 5 Greaves struck but again the Stoke Green middle order rebuilt, Ghumann in particular batted beautifully as he passed 50. This left it to Reed's second change pair of Sean Tidey (2.5-0-17-3) and Jack Caine (3-0-22-1) to mop up the tail and bowl Stoke Green out for 141. A score that looked well under par on a decent batting wicket at the Green. After a very enjoyable Tea, Reed openers Sean Tidey and Richard Wharton set about knocking the runs off. Sean in particular, looked in a very aggressive mood and almost in the blink of an eye was passed his 50, with a mix of classy strokes and lusty blows, meanwhile Wharton was knocking the ball around nicely in typical fashion. With the score at 88, Tidey went for one blow too many as he [...]

Headlines; Week ending 23rd June

SUNDAY - NATIONAL VILLAGE CUP. This 5th Round match, (the Final is the 9th so there is still a way to go), was on The Green against Stoke Green from Buckinghamshire. The visitors made 141 and were largely restricted by Toby Fynn (3 wickets) although all the bowlers contributed to their below par total. Reed's first wicket partnership realised 88 in 11 overs, of which the departing Sean Tidey scored 76 taking him to more than 300 aggregate runs in this season's competition. Although Reed lost four more wickets, they duly won with 5 in-hand. In the 6th Round, Reed's next opponents will be Borstal CC from Kent on the 7th July. They beat the Surrey side, Blackheath, today. Meanwhile, Foxton (Cambs & Norfolk) overcame Worlington (Essex & Suffolk) and will be hosting Findon from West Sussex next. SATURDAY - SHPCL. The Firsts were up at Dunstable (or is that Down at Dunstable?). Whichever, Dunstable made 198 for 6, with Jack Tidey returning a remarkable analysis of 2 for 32 off 20 overs. Reed's Ed Wharton made 94 in reply with thirties from Jack Caine and Richard Wharton seeing Reed home by 7 wickets. On The Green, Chorleywood were dispatched for 179 with Matt Bowles taking a 5-fer!. Earlier, Reed had posted 256 for 6. Phil Frenay led the way by scoring a 70, Chris Jackson reached fifty and Fergus Martin stroked a forty. Despite Mike Robertson's undefeated 52, the Thirds could not match Hoddesdon's 161 all out over at Roydon CC. Joe Graves made his mark early-on by taking 4 for 18, but what could have been a target of less than 100, enlarged in the latter stages of the innings. Michael Juckes took [...]

The Whartons dominate Dunstable

Reed continued their league form with a comfortable 7 wicket win, albeit against a Dunstable side severely weakened by a stag party. Having inserted their hosts, the Reed bowlers kept a tight hold on their top order, restricting them to 119-5 from 50 overs. This was especially due to the remarkable 20 over spell by Jack Tidey, who bowled unchanged and finished with six maidens after lunch. His final figures read 20-10-32-2. However they could not dismiss Brad Matthews, twice putting him down, and they were made to rue those misses as he opened his shoulders in the last 10 overs, scoring an undefeated 91 in Dunstable's 198 for 6, Ed Wharton and Zac McGuigan were the other wicket takers with run-outs from the latter and Jack Caine. Fearing another destructive spell from Luke Cherry, Reed's habitual nemesis, Ed Wharton decided attack was the order of the day and promptly smashed him out of the attack. Indeed he conceded an unprecedented 46 from his first 7 overs. With his brother, Richard (31) at the other end, the Whartons added 116 runs in 18 overs until both were bowled in successive overs, Ed frustratingly dismissed for 94 - the second time he had just missed a century this season. A more measured partnership of 71 between Jack Caine (38 not out) and James Heslam (19 not out) ensued, safely steering Reed to 200 for 3. Reed are still third, but just 10 points behind the leaders, their conquerors last week, Shenley Village. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Super cool Ollie see Reed U9 (2) to first ever win

After suffering three straight defeats the ever improving under 9B team won their first ever game in an epic finish at Reed against Braughing. Ollie and Luke set the pace with energetic running whilst Henry top scored with a hard hitting 11. But importantly Ollie, Luke, Atharva, Daniel and Matthew did not get out in a very respectable 265-5. Excluding four separate overthrows in an all run seven Reed bowled and fielded exceptionally well. Catches were caught by Henry, Matthew and Luke whilst Ollie and Atharva both got two wickets. Matthew, Henry, Daniel and Luke also took a wicket and got four run outs by Daniel (2), Matthew and Ollie. The match came down to the final over with Braughing needing 8 to win and with the super cool Ollie bowling, he took an important wicket to win the game for Reed. The team were over the moon in winning in an all round great performance, especially having 2 players not available. Match Report submitted by Simon Jackson.

Jackson steps in to see Under 9s to 4 in 4

Reed Under 9s (1) made it 4 wins out of 4 after they squeezed over the line against Sawbridgeworth at the Green on Friday. Reed captain Josh Heslam won the toss and elected to bowl and with the opposition on 230 after 12 of their 16 overs everything looked good for the young Reed side. However an impressive last wicket Sawbridgeworth stand set a competitive 258 for Reed to win. Reed wicket-takers were Josh and Eddie Heslam, Jon Green, Luke Wilson and Oliver Walters. This total looked particularly challenging for Reed to win when after the first pair they were only at 201. However Josh (24) and Eddie Heslam (6) had other ideas and quickly changed the momentum of the game progressing Reed to 233. Luke Wilson and Hugh Hollamby edged the hosts closer but at 245 going into the final pairing the game was in the balance. Step forward Matthew Jackson (17) who took a last minute call after the rain caused selection confusion to arrive part way through the first innings to then deliver the decisive blows hitting 4 boundaries in the final pairing with Oliver Walters to see Reed home and complete an enjoyable and exciting game in style. Match Report submitted by James Heslam.
