Flitwick spinners stifle Reed run chase

Having posted 259-7, Flitwick's spin duo South African David Powles and Sri Lankan Rumesh Buddhika contained Reed's batsmen so that they could only total 205-4 in an innings curtailed to 50 overs owing to rain breaks. Initially, Reed's seamers restricted their opponents to 57-3, including the prize wicket of Bedfordshire batsman, George Thurstance, bowled by Jack Tidey for 19. However, Harry Thurstance (71) and Buddhika (129 not out) shared a partnership of 157 until Tom Greaves trapped the former with the last ball of his 20 over spell. Tidey (2-32) and Zac McGuigan (2-62) chipped in with late wickets before the rain halted the innings two balls short. Ed Wharton set the host's innings off to a speedy start with a run a ball 55, but even he found the spinners hard to get away. Eventually both he and Greaves (15) holed out to Prowles, who also had the dogged McGuigan caught in the deep for a battling 37, finishing with the excellent figures of 19-4-49-3. Indeed the most exciting feature of this spell was umpire Brian 'Shep' Shepard crashing into the stumps, leaving him sprawling on the ground in his haste to fill in his overs chart! Although they were too far behind the run rate, Matt Sampson (40 not out) and Sean Tidey (28 not out), the latter with some audacious hitting, gave the crowd some late entertainment. Nevertheless, a game which eventually petered out due to the rain, ended with Flitwick gaining a "winning draw". Hoddesdon's 1-wicket victory over Letchworth has left Reed 38 points behind them, although only 2 points separate them from next week's opponents, Shenley Village. These last four matches of the campaign will be 50/50 matches with a [...]

Headlines; Week ending 11th August

SATURDAY (SHPCL): Not a result we see so often these days, Reed Firsts registered a Draw in their final "Timed Match" of the season chasing Flitwick's 259 for 7, (2 wickets each for Jack Tidey and Zac McGuigan), they ended on 205 for 4 (Ed Wharton 55, Matt Sampson 40 not out and Zac McGuigan 37). Next week it will be back to the blue kit and the last four 50 overs-a-side matches. Reed are in 3rd position with promotion still a realistic aim. Twin Tons at Stevenage in the Second XI game when Reed racked-up 313 for 3. Chris Jackson and James Sandford both scored centuries after Rich Barlow (24) and Phil Frenay (43) set up a solid platform. Martin Bros Incorporated (Marcus and Rupert) took 2 wickets apiece as Stevenage were restricted to 170 for 8. Reed are 13 points clear at the top of Division 4B. The Thirds lost at Holtwhites Trinibis who made 248 for 6 thanks to some dropped catches. Owen Hughes scored his maiden fifty backed-up by George Garrott's 48 in the reply, but Reed were eventually bowled all out for 216. However, a promotion place is still in their sights. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. President's Day: The President's Day match was a 9-a-side game between Orwell FC and a Reed IX. It was meant to be a two-innings, 16 over-a-side "test" match. Unfortunately rain came before the game could be completed. Fifties were scored by Mitch Cooper and Toby Saunders (Orwell) and James Heslam (Reed). Michael ‘Juke Box’ Jukes captained Orwell and took 2 excellent catches. Matt Giblin led the Reed side. The game was well balanced when the rain came, so an honourable draw was [...]

Reed Thirds still pushing for promotion!

At a sunny Freman Oval Rhodri Hughes, the Reed captain, won the toss and elected to field first on a good looking wicket. Saturday saw Reed field three very strong teams as layer availability was good this week! West Herts started brightly finding the odd boundary and running the quick single until Kieran Mckinna (7.5-0-24-4) took the first 2 wickets after which West Herts never really got going, losing batsmen at regular intervals. A few lusty blows from Mushtaq got them up to 114 before he was nicely caught on the boundary by George Garrott. When he came on to bowl, Garrott also took 3 wickets for 25 from his 9 overs. Alex Kelly took one and there were two good run-outs in an outstanding fielding display. Reed's reply started well with Richard Johnson and Paul Garrott making it to the tea interval at 44 without loss from 10 overs. After the interval Johnson carried on magestically, finding the rope with ease. The pair had put on 104 for the 1st wicket when Garrott (43) nicked behind. That started a slight panic in the dressing room as Reed proceeded to lose 3 quick wickets for 3 runs. But George Garrott came in to accompany the classy Johnson, who remained undefeated on 69 at the other end, to see Reed home to win convincingly by 7 wickets. Reed are in 5th position in the Division but technically are fourth owing to Southgate Compton, (who currently head the table), being ineligible to be promoted this season. Match Report submitted by Paul Garrott.

Cooper and Smith take Reed to Lord’s in a thriller on The Green

Reed will return to Lord’s on 15th September after a nail biting Semi-Final win in the National Village Cup against Hampshire’s Sarisbury Athletic. Electing to bat first, Sarisbury were indebted to their skipper Rawlins (63) who anchored the innings. At drinks the Hants. side were 84-2 and a score in excess of 200 beckoned. However, Reed skipper Tom Greaves marshalled his bowling options well and he was rewarded with a personal return of 8-1-23-2, whilst Mitchell Cooper (1-43) bowled good lines. However, it was the reintroduction of Sean Tidey (4-45) that proved decisive. After discharging his wicket-keeping duties in the first 20 overs, the younger Tidey brother removed Journeaux who was set on 40 and combining with "deputy keeper" Rob Lankester for two stumping in successive Tidey overs it left Sarisbury on 195-8 from their 40 over quota. Possibly this was 30 runs short on the Reed wicket. Reed lost Sean Tidey early when the score was 5, but Rob Lankester and Tom Greaves set about building a sound foundation. A mix up though led to Lankester being run out for 41 and when James Heslam fell in the next over, the hosts were 87-3 at drinks. Greaves fell caught for 47 trying to clear the mid-wicket boundary to get his fifty and when Mike Catt soon followed, Reed were 104-5. Stuart Smith and Mitchell Cooper now set about rebuilding the innings. Striking the bad ball and running well between the wickets the two kept Reed in the game. 72 needed from the last ten overs. Sarisbury though produced five tight overs leaving 42 required from 30 balls; the nerves were jangling. Smith and Cooper then began to hit out paticularly against wicket taker Josh [...]

Action Jackson and Magnificent Martin keep the Seconds top of the pile

Reed Seconds kept up their good form with a solid performance against Hitchin Seconds at The Green. Electing to bat first on a slow pitch, openers Barlow and Frenay (46) put on 57 for the first wicket. The introduction of Patadia sent both openers back to the pavilion with 88 on the board. Enter Chris Jackson who hadn’t been dismissed in his four previous knocks. Reed upped the ante after drinks with Jackson building partnerships with Marcus Martin (24) , Jack Caine (19) and skipper Ed Garrott (21). A late burst of runs pushed Reed over the 200 mark finishing on 222-6 from their 50 overs. Hitchin started their chase quickly with Chris Maylin (55) and Bayston (36) putting on 69 for the first wicket. Ed Garrott brought himself on and trapped Bayston lbw. Then the first of three run outs, this one by Marcus Martin, brought Reed back into contention at drinks. Again it was the drinks break that proved the innings turning point. Hitchin slumped from 107-2 to 160-8. Matt Bowles (2-34) and Marcus Martin with a match winning (4-27) pushed Reed towards victory backed by superb catching, Matt Giblin and Phil Frenay in particular, and the two further run-outs, (both by skipper Garrott), Hitchin were dismissed in the 49th over for 186, leaving Reed winners by 36 runs. Reed stay top of Division 4B with five matches remaining in the League Season. Reed 2nd XI 222-6 in 50 overs (30 pts.) beat Hitchin 2nd XI 186 all out in 48.1 overs (12 pts.) by 36 runs. Headlines; Sunday 4th August (Village Cup)

National Village Cup Semi-Final: Wow! Those present shouldn't forget it in a hurry. Mitchell Cooper launched that 6 towards the HM Pavilion in the 39th over giving Reed victory by 5 wickets when just 6 overs earlier they required 63. Mitch was 52 not out at the end, Stuart Smith 43 not out and earlier Rob Lankester, (41), and Tom Greaves, (47), had put the hosts on the rocky trail to St. John's Wood. But it was a challenging target set by competition debutants, Sarisbury Athletic, who scored 195 for 8. Sean Tidey kept wicket for the first 20 overs of their innings then bowled in the next twenty taking 4 for 45. Next up - as if you didn't know - will be the Final at Lord's on Sunday 15th September. And yet again the opponents will be a club from Yorkshire, this time the experienced outfit from Houghton Main. Expect a more detailed Match Report to follow. PGB

Ton-up Rooty!

Rob Lankester drove the winning boundary and with it brought up his maiden Reed league century at a run a ball. It was a fine innings of 102 not out containing 13 of those boundaries with shots all around the wicket. He shared partnerships of 89 with Zac McGuigan (30) and 86 unbeaten with James Heslam (22 not out). This after the dangerous Ed Wharton was caught at mid-off from the third ball of the innings. After Tom Greaves had inserted Leverstock Green and Wharton had made the early breakthrough - Claxton caught at slip by McGuigan - Wijalath (22) and Mahandma launched into the Reed opening attack, the latter smiting 13 fours in his rapid 67, Jack Tidey at last trapped the former in front and McGuigan in his opening over forced his partner into skying a short ball into keeper Sean Tidey's gloves. From 132-4 at lunch, the innings subsided to 174 all out, Toby Fynn the destroyer taking 4-17 bowling an unplayable length and line. Greaves was also rewarded for his 18 over stint with late wickets, finishing on 3-69. Thus Reed were back to winning ways to cement their third place in the Championship Division following last week's conquerors, Hemel Hempstead, being beaten by second placed Shenley Village. Headlines – What headlines?

The Herts League programme was virtually wiped out on Saturday. Only 10 (that is 7%) of the 128 scheduled fixtures were played. 113 matches were cancelled and a further 5 conceded. Needless to add that all three of Reed's games were cancelled. The only Reed player I know of who saw any cricketing action on Saturday was yours truly. I played at a village called Saxlingham Nethergate, (how quaint it sounds), in central Norfolk, batted at number 8 and scored 11 not out, not required to bowl, then dropped a catch! Match lost. Sound familiar? Don't expect a Match Report! Sunday's match versus Woodcutters has also been called off. PGB
