Headlines; Week ending 5th May
SATURDAY: It was the Group Matches in the Herts County 20/20 Cup on Saturday. Reed were drawn to play at Potters Bar in Group 4 against North Mymms in the first game. Thanks to 4 wickets each from Sean Tidey and Tom Greaves, the Premier Division side were bowled all-out for 103 in 19 overs. Nothing could have been tighter as Reed squeezed home off the last delivery of the innings with 9 wickets down and thus progressed through to the Group Final. The scores were level but Reed had lost fewer wickets! Subsequently, Potters Bar disposed of Harpenden in a 43-run victory. In a day beset by poor weather, the players were more off the field than on, so when the hosts’ innings was deemed closed on 36 for 1 after 7 overs later in the afternoon, Reed’s target was calculated at 48 in 7 overs by the Duckworth Lewis Stern (DLS) method. Reed’s new boy, Zac McGuigan (19 n.o.) and old hand, Sean Tidey (28 n.o.), formed the opening partnership and biffed and bashed their way to 48 without loss in just 4 overs! Reed will join the other Group Winners, Hertford and Totteridge Millhillians, at the County Semi-Finals and Final which are due to be played on Sunday 14th July. Radlett and Letchworth appear to have encountered more rain than at the other venues and their Group Winner is still to be decided. COLTS: The Under 13s played a friendly against City of Cambridge at home last week. The visitors scored 99 for 4, wickets falling to Sam Osborne, (2), Charlie Butler and Archie McIntosh (1 each). Headlines; Week ending 28th April
Rich Barlow retired after reaching fifty on Saturday against Flitwick in a friendly. There were also useful early-season innings by Rhodri Hughes, Ed Garrott, Mitchell Cooper, Rob Lankester and MJE Baker who all passed twenty as Reed closed on 205 for 5. The home bowling proved too strong for Flitwick who finished 84 runs short on 121 for 8. Karl Ward and Joe Graves took 3 wickets each and Mitchell Cooper 2. The 1st XI's friendly away at Stevenage was called-off because of an unfit pitch. In addition to the 1st XI being involved in the County 20/20 next Saturday, it is looking quite likely that some additional friendly fixtures will be arranged for next Saturday and / or Sunday with several players interested and available. If you are wanting to get some time on the field before the League begins the following Saturday,(11th May), remember to contact Matt Bowles or one of the other selectors by Monday evening. PGB.
Reed Blow out the Cobwebs in Season Opener
Winter is certainly not coming. In fact, it could not have been further away on the hottest day of 2019 as Reed's 2nd XI travelled away to Sawbridgeworth. It was a pre-league friendly raising the curtain on a new season. The hosts elected to bat first on the impressive looking square, but it was a decision that looked misguided after Sawbridgeworth's opener fell fourth ball to a diving catch by wicket-keeper Marcus J.E. Baker off the bowling of Karl Ward. After a slight re-building effort, the second wicket, again caught by Baker this time off Rupert Martin, saw a collapse as Martin then claimed his second wicket next ball thanks to Stuart Smith's catch as well as Alex Kelly also taking two in quick succession, one LBW and another making Baker's third catch. Were it not for Oakes (104) then the hosts would have been far off course. As it was, his aggressive innings later supported by Black (34) took his side to 181 all out in the 35th over. Reed captain Matt Bowles claimed 3 wickets including that of Oakes athletically caught at slip by the ever-green veteran Peter Baker. Julien Fynn was the other performer with the ball, taking two wickets, both bowled. Reed's response started in the worst possible way with a wicket falling to the first ball followed by the loss of Marcus Martin to a one-in-a-million catch. Rob Willoughby played a dogged innings and waited for the right balls to dispatch making 57. But none the less some good bowling by Sawbo tied Reed down. A spirited innings of 51 by M.J.E. Membership and Subscriptions, Reed CC 2019
To Members and Supporters of Reed Cricket Club, A reminder for you to please renew your Club Membership as soon as possible if you have not paid your Subscriptions already. Adult Players: If you have not already paid, there is just one week left until the 1st May before you will be required to pay the full rate of £90. If you are quick, it will be only £75 until then so don’t delay any longer! Junior Players (those aged 14 and above on 1st Sept 2018 AND in full-time education): It is £25 if you pay this week but it will be £35 after 1st May. Please read Cilla’s letter below then complete and send her your Membership Forms so that you remain on her database. There is an electronic version of the Form on this website under “Members Area”. Feel free to pass-on this email to any potential new Players and / or Non-Playing Members and also convey information to those we know do not have internet access or email addresses. We rely on you to help this Club run efficiently and part of that comes under communication. If it was me, I would rather be told something twice than not at all. Thank you. The senior teams started their season on Saturday in beautiful late-spring weather — long may it continue. Within a fortnight there will also be Colts and All-Stars training and matches and the Saturday Herts League gets underway on 11th May. Headlines; Week ending 21st April
Availability was such that we were able to arrange a second fixture on Saturday so that in addition to the Knebworth Park match we also took an XI to play away at Sawbridgeworth. The "A" Team came off for tea after Knebworth Park had rattled-up 238 for 7 from their 40 overs. Wickets were spread between Ed Wharton (3) Matt Giblin (2) Toby Fynn (2) and Tom Greaves (1). Reed managed only 95 in reply with Phil Frenay top-scoring on 40. At Sawbridgeworth, Reed's Extra "A"s bowled-out the hosts for 181. Again wickets were shared, Matt Bowles (3), Julien Fynn, Alex Kelly & Rupert Martin (2 each) and Karl Ward (1) but the catching was superb, MJE Baker claiming 3 behind the stumps led the way. The batting response was a little slow as wickets fell to some accurate bowling, but Rob Willoughby (56) and MJE Baker (51) kept Reed in contention although once they were out the requirement was too much and Reed finally ended on 145 for 7. A View from the Chair
March is one of my favourite months of the year. The long dark nights are behind us and more importantly the cricket season is just around the corner. The 2017 season was always going to be hard to match but the 2018 season was still a very enjoyable one. Lots of good performances, (some bad ones too), great weather, a full social calendar, lots for the club to be proud of. Unfortunately, there was one negative that came up on a regular basis. Player availability. Speaking to other clubs and reading bits on social media it’s clear that Reed is not alone in having this problem. With people’s lives increasingly busy, and cricket taking a high proportion of the day, getting players to commit is becoming increasingly difficult. Membership levels seem to have remained constant, but the number of games people are playing in a season has dropped. Poor availability affected our Third team most. Some games were forfeited and some were played with 10 players or less. So what does the future hold for Reed and the 3rd team in particular? We have a lot of good Colts coming through but most of them won’t be old enough for Open-Age (or “Adult”) cricket for a few years yet. Will there still be a 3rd team when they are old enough? I really hope so. (We all remember that we had a Fourth Team until 2 years ago and look what happened to them.) So here’s the challenge to the playing members. Reed CC Colts’ Awards Evening
A MESSAGE FROM REED CC's COLTS LIAISON OFFICER, HANNAH HESLAM. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There will be a Reed CC Colts’ Awards Evening in the Pavilion on Tuesday 2nd April at 7.00 pm. In the 2019 Season we will be running the following age groups: Under 9s – Training Sundays 10 -12, Midweek Evening Matches in the Hertfordshire Junior League and two Cricket Festivals. Coaches / Managers – Simon Jackson, Nigel Cook and James Heslam. Under 11s - Training Sundays 10 -12, Midweek Evening Matches in the Cambridgeshire Youth Cricket Association and Cup Competitions.
