Giblin’s high five as Reed II dismantle Sawbo

Reed 2s crushed Sawbridgeworth 2s to claim back-to-back league wins at the start of the Herts League season. Skipper Ed Garrott lost the toss and his side were asked to take the field. From there on in things were very one-sided. The hosts lost a wicket in the first over in a sign of things to come, as Matt Giblin tore through the Sawbo top order. They were soon 18-5 whilst Giblin (9.5-1-21-5) bowled terrifically and deservedly snared his first 5-wicket haul in League cricket since he was 17. A direct hit run out from Phil ‘Stokes’ Frenay and a wicket apiece from spin twins Ed Garrott (8-3-15-1) and Matt Bowles (7-2-12-1) meant Sawbo we’re bundled out for just 74. Reed’s response with the bat was equally emphatic, despite the early loss of Richard Johnson. Phil Frenay (50 not out) and Chris Jackson (23 not out) went about chasing down the total in just 16 overs, with Frenay in a particularly destructive mood. Match Reports submitted by MLB.

Wharton hammers Hemel.

The First XI game was dominated by two batsmen who both narrowly missed out on scoring a century. For Hemel Hamish Llangaratne carried his bat for a classy 95, but sadly ran out of partners with two overs remaining. Reed's Ed Wharton, in contrast, bludgeoned the visitors' attack for a brutal 91 from 80 balls, including 8 fours and 5 sixes. Hemel struggled against accurate home bowling with Jack Tidey (6-2-8-2) striking early and Toby Fynn (2-38) accounting for Australian Jack Bailey to break the crucial partnership. Once again, Reed's spinners tied down the middle order taking 4-53 between them from 18 overs, ably aided by 3 catches calmly pouched in the deep by Zac McGuigan, who also added a run out and a wicket to his tally. 162 did not look a defensible total, especially when McGuigan and Ed Wharton plundered 70 from the power play. Although Mcguigan was unluckily run out for 24 for the second week running - the bowler deflecting a drive onto his wicket when he was backing up, Wharton continued his barrage. When he was finally bowled, only 17 were needed for victory and Reed romped home with 6 wickets and 20 overs to spare. A very convincing performance. Match report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Tidey enough!

Reed First XI, National Village Cup, Round 2. Reed welcomed Division 1 Sawbridgeworth to The Green on Sunday in pursuit of their third Lord’s victory in 7 years in the National Village Cup. Reed Skipper Greaves won the toss and had no hesitation In asking the visitors to bat. Reed’s opening pair Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn bowled solidly to start with Jack picking up an early wicket, trapping R. Sanders bang in front for 8. Each of the opening bowlers bowled tight spells and after 10 over Greaves brought himself and spin twin Sean Tidey into the attack. The introduction of spin then changed the game all together. Both bowled 8 overs straight returning combined figures of 6 for 45 in 16 overs. The opening pair of Jack and Toby came back and wrapped the tail up convincingly and Sawbridgeworth were all out in 29.1 overs for an under par score of 92. After a typically excellent Sunday afternoon tea, Reed’s openers Richard Wharton and Sean Tidey set to work on knocking off the required runs. Sean in particular took a liking to S.Black hitting him for several boundaries, although once he made a very quick fire 32, Black had Tidey bowled going for one shot too many. The wicket brought vice-captain Rob Lankester to the crease and he and Wharton calmly knocked off the remaining runs with ease as Reed cruised home with 9 wickets in hand inside 14 overs. Barlow and Sandford put runs in the bank

Reed Second XI, Herts League, Division 4B. Rain showers filled the air as new second team skipper, Ed Garrott started off the side’s 2019 campaign. Ed lost the toss and the opposition, newly promoted Holtwhites Trinibis elected to bowl first.The Reed squad were kept busy, taking the covers on and off between two short rain delays, after which the match was reduced to 46 overs per side. Rich Barlow led from the top, and looked in fine form as he built his innings. Unfortunately Reed lost fellow opener Frenay without scoring, and Jackson soon after to find themselves in a precarious position at 27-2. Barlow and Smith put on just under 50 for the 3rd wicket, rebuilding the Reed innings, whist being kept busy running between the wickets. A slow outfield from the earlier rain meant many balls that would normally have gone for 4, stopped within the ropes. Smith fell to a quick reaction caught & bowled, with the score at 74 for 3. In at number five came new signing for the season, James Sandford. Sandford took the attack to the Holtwhites bowlers, and played some fine shots including some well struck boundaries, while Barlow also looked to up the run rate at the opposite end. Barlow eventually fell caught, for 75, an innings that perhaps would have amounted to a century in drier conditions. With a strong squad, Ed Garrott batted himself and Marcus Martin lower down the order. Martin fell cheaply for 6, while Garrott looked in good touch for his 24. The three Rs star at Freman College

Reed Third XI, Herts League, Division 10A. At the Freman Oval, Frogmore were bundled out for 41 by a particularly strong Reed 3rd XI. 3 wickets went to Rupert Martin who has re-located back to the area, and there were 2 each for George Garrott and Joe Graves, supported by some excellent catching and fielding. Rob Willoughby, 21 not out, and Richard Johnson, 17 not out, had no trouble in knocking off the runs without loss. With some new players and some former members rejoining, Reed generally are looking stronger throughout the senior teams and this first successful weekend of competitive League and Cup action bodes well for the 2019 season. Reed win on penalties!

In an exciting climax to the First XI fixture, Jack Tidey hit his first ball for 6 to win the match with two balls to spare. However, Old Owens conceded 5 penalty runs when Whitworth feigned to throw a non-existent ball to put off the runners in a tight call. Was that the difference between the sides at the end? The home side set off like a train taking 65 without loss from the power play. It was the introduction of Zac McGuigan which started the fight back as he took the first 3 wickets, including the dangerous Whitworth for 69. At 142-3 with 20 overs remaining a big total looked likely until an inspired spell of 10 overs by Toby Fynn (5-26) including 3 catches by keeper Richard Wharton, turned the course of the innings. McGuigan returned to bowl the last two batsmen, helping himself to a 'five-fer' (9.3-2-30-5) as well. Old Owens made 189 all out from 46 overs. Old Owens won Division 1 last year on the back of an excellent bowling attack and they proved very difficult to score against. As a result Reed found themselves 77-5 from 25 overs with only Rob Lankester playing fluently until the reverse sweep was his downfall yet again for 28. James Heslam and Richard Wharton then dug in for a gritty partnership of 47 until Heslam was caught for a patient 42. Wharton continued as anchor while Sean Tidey hit a belligerent run a ball 28 in an invaluable stand of 50. With 16 still required from two overs it was left to Wharton (34 not out) and Jack Tidey to squeeze home (190-8) in an exciting finish, leaving Owens ruing those unnecessary penalty [...]

Reed Blow out the Cobwebs in Season Opener

Winter is certainly not coming. In fact, it could not have been further away on the hottest day of 2019 as Reed's 2nd XI travelled away to Sawbridgeworth. It was a pre-league friendly raising the curtain on a new season. The hosts elected to bat first on the impressive looking square, but it was a decision that looked misguided after Sawbridgeworth's opener fell fourth ball to a diving catch by wicket-keeper Marcus J.E. Baker off the bowling of Karl Ward. After a slight re-building effort, the second wicket, again caught by Baker this time off Rupert Martin, saw a collapse as Martin then claimed his second wicket next ball thanks to Stuart Smith's catch as well as Alex Kelly also taking two in quick succession, one LBW and another making Baker's third catch. Were it not for Oakes (104) then the hosts would have been far off course. As it was, his aggressive innings later supported by Black (34) took his side to 181 all out in the 35th over. Reed captain Matt Bowles claimed 3 wickets including that of Oakes athletically caught at slip by the ever-green veteran Peter Baker. Julien Fynn was the other performer with the ball, taking two wickets, both bowled. Reed's response started in the worst possible way with a wicket falling to the first ball followed by the loss of Marcus Martin to a one-in-a-million catch. Rob Willoughby played a dogged innings and waited for the right balls to dispatch making 57. But none the less some good bowling by Sawbo tied Reed down. A spirited innings of 51 by M.J.E.
