National Village Cup News

For those who have not had the chance to look at the results of the NVC Semi-Finals that were played yesterday (5th August) here are the scores. Liphook & Ripsley 218 all out. Mayfield 125 all out. Fillongley 206 for 8. Folkton & Flixton 207 for 3. Liphook & Ripsley will be playing Folkton & Flixton in this season's Final at Lord's on Sunday 16th September. With each club having 15 characters in their names, they might need more space for the engravers to fit all the letters in. And by the way, the organisers have just requested me to hand the Cup back in time for the Final! PGB

Headlines; Week Ending 5th August

SATURDAY (SHPCL): The Firsts in their last "Timed Match" were all out for 144 at Hemel Hempstead. Tom Greaves made 38 and Stuart Smith 31. Hemel made hard work of it but got home with 3 wickets intact. Tom Greaves took 4 wickets and Stuart Smith 3 catches. It is back to Limited Overs cricket next week for the last 4 fixtures of the league season with the team placed in 6th position in the table. The Seconds would have wanted 20 or 30 more on the Green. Chris Jackson scored a masterful 124 (next best was Jack Caine's 36), but 218 for 7 wasn't quite enough. Northampton Exiles chased it down with 10 deliveries remaining losing 7 wickets on the way, 3 of them falling to Jack Caine. The Seconds too are in 6th place. Meanwhile, at Freman College, the Thirds would have wanted one or two hundred more! Hertford knocked off the target of 132 in 26 overs without losing a wicket. Earlier, Paul Garrott had top-scored with 38 and Richard Robertson 25 for a Reed team that comprised 9 players over the age of 48. Needless to state that the Thirds are well-below the dreaded "dotted line" and are heading for relegation. SUNDAY: No fixture. Despite Reed having a full team available, there were no takers through the Cricket Conference meaning no Sunday afternoon Friendly at Reed today. There is an Under 13s match scheduled for 1000hrs on Sunday morning versus Bishop's Stortford. AREA COLTS: Reed hosted two Area Matches during the week. On Tuesday Herts North Area Under 12 (B) beat West Area then on Thursday Herts North Area Under 12 (A) also won against West Area. QUIZ: 7 Teams participated [...]

Information and Alert regarding Female Players in Open Age Cricket

A MESSAGE SENT ON BEHALF OF THE ENGLAND AND WALES CRICKET BOARD (ECB). Inappropriate and unwelcome behaviour towards Young Female Participants in cricket over the last few weeks has been reported to the ECB Safeguarding Team regarding sexual harassment of female players, either on the pitch through inappropriate language or ‘sledging’, and off the pitch via unsolicited text and social media contact. The ECB, through Club Safeguarding Officers, emphasise that such behaviour is not acceptable and will not be tolerated. No young women should receive such attention through taking part in cricket. The following should be brought to the attention of players and members of cricket clubs across the country: Members should be reminded of their own Codes of Conduct, and the guidance included in ‘Safe Hands’, especially ‘ECB guidance for clubs on the use of Social Media, texts and email’. Clubs should also be reminded that ‘sledging’ female players by reference to their body parts constitutes sexual harassment. Where any such incident involves an Under 18 player, this must be reported as a safeguarding matter and will be dealt with as such. Female participants should be encouraged to report any incidents of unwanted comment, attention or harassment to the Club Safeguarding Officer, who should inform the County Safeguarding Officer. Any concerns can also be reported at any time directly to the ECB Safeguarding Team at [email protected] Thank you for your assistance in making it clear that such behaviour has no place in our sport. Greaves takes 7, but Reed are humiliated

The thunderstorm which hit Reed on Friday night left the pitch one that 'Deadly' Derek Underwood used to dream about in the days of uncovered wickets. As a result it started to dry out, which meant batsmen had to play attritionally. From 84-1, Ampthill slumped to 111-8, mostly against Tom Greaves, who finished with career-best figures of 18-6-37-7. However, once again, Reed could not polish off the innings, not helped by 5 dropped catches in toto. Thus their opponents were well satisfied with a final total of 173. Sadly only Jack Caine showed the required application in Reed's innings. Although he scored 16 of their 62 runs, he faced nearly half the 19 overs it took veteran seamer, Will Sneath, (4-30) and Beds' left arm spinner, George Darlow,(6-31) to rout the hosts. "Not our best day at the office," remarked skipper Greaves, although it will be one for him to remember nevertheless. Match Report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Headlines; Week Ending 29th July

SATURDAY (SHPCL): The highlight performance of the day was surely Tom Greaves snaring 7 of Ampthill First XI's wickets at a personal cost of 37. Unfortunately Reed's response to the visitors' 173 was a poor 62. Jack Caine top-scored with 16. With no disrespect intended, an under strength Second Team went to Ampthill and after rain interruptions came off second best! The hosts scored 298 for 7, Owen Hughes taking a four-for. Paul Garrott, Rob Willoughby and skipper, MJE Baker, were the main contributors in the run chase which was called off at 113 for 5 when rain put paid to the proceedings. Most of the Third team players represented the Seconds this week, meaning the Third XI match against Hitchin had to be conceded. Expect Match Reports to follow shortly. SUNDAY: The match against the Woodcutters had to be cancelled because of rain. COLTS: The Under 13s played two matches recently. In the Herts Summer League they managed 94 for 8 against Broxbourne's 124 for 7; I have no details of individual performances. Then on the next evening they played their last CYCA League match. Had it been against Broxbourne they would have won because this time they scored 125 for 3. But as it was, they were playing Saffron Walden who had already posted 181 for 3. In the latter match, Archie McIntosh took 1 wicket and Sam Osborne 2, then Osborne scored 31 (retired) and Sam Bayley 32 not out. PGB

Headlines; Week Ending 22nd July

SATURDAY (SHPCL): Another draw for the Firsts – a comfortable sixty-three runs more than Flitwick but naggingly unable to take the last two wickets. Ed Wharton returned 6 for 41 and earlier Rob Lankester was out for 49 and Stuart Smith for 44 in Reed’s 225 for 8. On the Green Northwood Town set a similar target having been bowled out for 224, Jack Tidey taking 4 wickets. But the Seconds could muster an under par 137 in reply with only Phil Frenay going past thirty. The Thirds meanwhile scored a massive 303 for 7 at Shenley. Unfortunately, Shenley Village had already posted an even more massive 406 for 5. Remarkably, Neil Haslam conceded only 26 of those runs in 10 overs and Keiran Willoughby took two expensive wickets. Batting-wise, openers Rob Willoughby and Peter Baker scored forties but the star innings was Zac Conley’s 87. Three hundred on the board with a much needed 15 bonus points still see Reed footing the 9A table. SUNDAY: Orwell FC made their second visit to the cricket field in the royal blue coloured strip of Reed's First XI. Manager "Big Jack" Tidey stepped aside from the playing XI but the soccer team still included several past & present RCC players and a couple of other useful multi-sport athletes. After consecutive Sunday tons, Toby Fynn was surprised to be out in the first over but a 4th wicket partnership of 213 followed between Will Heslam (103 retired) and Rhodri Hughes (88). Stuart Smith scored 41 not out and Reed's innings closed on 323 for 8. The Orwell response relied largely on the Caine brothers; opener Jack scoring 88 and Scott at number 9, 82. Others chipped-in and wickets [...]

Thurstance thwarts Wharton

Ed Wharton destroyed Flitwick's batting order taking 6-41 from his 20 overs, including a devastating spell of 6-4 either side of tea. This included the host's big gun, George Thurstance, but he could not account for his brother, Harry, who held the tail together with a defiant 89 not out. He frustrated Reed's bowlers, putting on over 100 runs for the eighth and ninth wickets, even surviving the 24 overs delivered in the final hour. Earlier, Reed had stuttered to 85-4 at lunch, having used up over half of their overs, only Rob Lankester looking comfortable against Flitwick's new ball attack on an unusually green wicket. He and Stuart Smith (44) then put together a half century partnership which swung the momentum Reed's way until he was stumped one short of a deserved 50. Just like last week, Smith provided the support for Tom Greaves (31) and Sean Tidey (23 not out) to accelerate the scoring just achieving 3 batting bonus points with a final total of 225-8. This looked more than enough for a victory until Thurstance steered Flitwick to 162-8 and left Reed frustrated with a winning draw and 16 points. Match report submitted by Peter Wholley.

Stuart Smith and Sean Tidey turn the tables on Dunstable

Reed overcame high flying Dunstable in an exciting, low scoring, encounter on The Green. Toby Fynn sent back both the opposition's openers cheaply, but once again skipper, Tom Greaves, turned to spin and Sean Tidey soon rewarded him with a couple of wickets. However a stand of 84 beetween Sam Cherry (65) and Matthew Woodcock (52), who survived some sharp chances in the field, appeared to be taking the game away. After lunch though,Tidey and Greaves (2-82) took control as Dunstable lost their last 6 wickets for 39 and were bowled out for 192 in 51 overs, giving Reed 8 more precious overs to win the game. Tidey kept the match ball, finishing with splendid figures of 17-3-48-6. The home side needed the cushion of those extra overs as the Cherry brothers kept a tight rein on their reply. Only Ed Wharton's customary rapid 41 mastered the early bowling. Indeed Reed slipped to 90-5 after tea, but Stuart Smith had been patiently playing himself in. With a match winning innings he scored an unbeaten 62 over two and a half hours facing 150 balls. The other batsmen all contributed by surviving more than 20 deliveries, many from Reed's previous nemesis, the dangerouus Luke Cherry, who took 4-60 from his 21 overs. Late impetus from Greaves (19) and fittingly, Sean Tidey (28 not out) saw Reed to 193-7 to complete a hard fought victory and with other results going their way, Reed moved up three places to third in the Championship. (However, Richard will be livid that 6 match balls in addition to Sean's trophy were lost with some massive maximums, despite neither side reaching 200 runs!) Match report submitted by Peter Wholley.
