Funeral details; Peter Wilson

Peter's Funeral will be at St. Mary's Church, Guilden Morden at 1430hrs on Friday 3rd November followed by refreshments at The Hardwick Arms, Arrington. ************************************* I have learned the sad news today that Peter Wilson died on Tuesday. Peter was involved with Reed's Colts for several years in the late 1990s to the early 2000s when his three sons, Graham, Rob and James, were Colts in the Under 11s and Under 13s. He subsequently became a Vice-President of the Club. Please join me in sending condolences to Moira and her family. I shall publicise funeral details when I know them. Peter G. Memorial Service for Howard Marshall, 28th October

A Memorial Service for Howard Marshall will be held on Saturday 28th October at St. Mary Magdalene Church, Barkway, Herts, SG8 8EJ at 3pm followed by a reception at The Woodman Public House, Nuthampstead, SG8 8NB - to have a final pint with our past President. The family have requested that flowers not be sent however if anyone wishes to mark Howard's passing, donations in his memory are gratefully accepted for Khandel Light which may be taken to the service or sent to Jeremy Rule Funeral Service, 12 Church Lane, Royston, Herts., SG8 9LG. ---------------------------------------------- Howard Marshall, 16th August 1935 to 22nd September 2017. Cricket-wise, Cokenach CC was Howard Marshall’s first port of call when he re-located to North Hertfordshire from Harrow in the early 1970s. Mostly in those days, fixtures were “friendlies” although that is not to say that these were not competitive! The side batting first was expected to declare at teatime if they had not already been bowled-out. In one Cokenach versus Reed clash, Reed batted on after tea much to Howard’s annoyance who was then still playing for Cokenach. This blemish on the “Spirit of Cricket”, did not dissuade Howard from changing colours and he began playing for Reed soon afterwards where he thought there would be more opportunities to be involved as wicket-keeper / batsman. The cricketers changed in the Village Hall and drank afterwards in the Cabinet public house and the fixtures were mostly against local village clubs although the National Village Cup was already on the scene. Howard Marshall, 1935 to 2017. RIP.

Dear Members and Friends of Reed Cricket Club, We have received the sad news today that our former Club President and long-serving committee member, Howard Marshall, died this morning aged 82. Howard had been in poor health for some months but was cheered last weekend when he learned of Reed’s victory in the National Village Cup Final at Lord’s. Attached is a photograph of a proud Howard holding the Village Cup in 2012 when Reed won it for the first time. It is a wonderful photograph capturing a joyful Howard as many of us will remember him. I am sure you will join with me to send our sympathies to Howard’s children, Justin and Belinda. When I have any further news to announce I shall let you know. Watson’s National Village Cup Final – Updated News: 21/9/17. WE WON!!!

Another fantastic day at Lord's Cricket Ground saw Tom Greaves lead Reed CC onto the Pavilion terrace to be presented with the Watson's National Village Cup. Well done to everyone connected to the team - thank you for producing a second memorable victory for us to savour. Thank you to the hundreds of supporters who travelled to London and vocalised their joy, to those who stayed in touch by social media providing encouragement to the players, and those who followed the fluctuations of the match by radio commentary. Thank you too to our numerous advertisers and sponsors who have contributed to Reed CC's progress and development over the years. Reed crush Sessay in another Lord’s triumph

Reed's skipper Tom Greaves hammered the ball over the Pavilion boundary to win the Watson's National Village Cup for Reed for the second time. It was a fitting way to end a match which Reed had dominated from the moment Greaves won the toss and put the opposition in under overcast conditions at Lord’s. Opening bowlers Jack Tidey and Toby Fynn contained the Sessay openers to 34 from the first 10 overs and Fynn (6-2-17-1) made the first breakthrough having opposing captain Wilkie caught from a lofted drive by Stuart Smith. Tidey, bowling through the pain of a damaged shoulder, conceded just 28 runs from his allotted 8 overs, but it was the change bowlers, Greaves and Karl Ward, who really put the shackles on. Greaves took the next three wickets to fall for a miserly 19 runs, including a spectacular diving, overhead catch by Smith, running backwards at mid-on, which nearly knocked him out and kept him off the field for a short time. Ward then chipped in with two wickets, the pick of which was a lightning quick stumping by Richard Wharton from a leg-side wide, leaving Sessay tottering at 81-6. It took a defiant knock of 46 by Chris Till to gain some degree of respectability to the score, although Mitchell Cooper fired out two more wickets – another spectacular stumping by Wharton included. Till drove the last ball of the innings fiercely towards the boundary to complete his fifty, but the safe hands of Ward thwarted him and gave Sean Tidey his wicket, leaving Sessay on 164-9 from their 40 overs. Not quite enough in the friendly against The Archway Ladder

Reed Sunday XI versus The Archway Ladder CC at Reed on Sunday 10th September 2017. Hastily arranged after Waresley dropped-out on Friday, The Archway Ladder CC travelled up from London to find a still damp pitch after the downpours on Friday and Saturday. Richard Robertson and Peter Wholley worked hard to make it playable and only a half-hour’s delay was necessary before play commenced. An opening stand of 47 in 10 overs between William Heslam and Richard Barlow set Reed on the way before Barlow was surprised by a lifter and gloved it to slip for 10. Tom Greaves was at number 4 and both he and Will Heslam made half-centuries before departing. Heslam for 51 and Greaves for 59. MJE Baker hung around for 26 but the eventual total of 178 for 7 was perhaps a little under par. Rosemary Collins had prepared her usual high-quality teas for the last Sunday home fixture of the season by which time rain was falling outside. The showers came and went (and came back again!) but ALCC’s opener, Walsh, led the way with an attacking 62. Patel, Aslam and Sherwood provided support lower down the order as ALCC maintained a superior run-rate throughout the innings. Reed fought back with wickets falling to Giblin, Graves, Yates and O Hughes. Then off-breaker Greaves claimed the last 3 wickets to fall although it was too late; the visitors winning by 3 wickets in ever-increasing rainfall. Report submitted by PGB.

SATURDAY (THANKS TO): The friendly against Baldock was abandoned without a ball bowled. THANKS TO the rain! SUNDAY (THANKS TO): Waresley cried-off on Friday so THANKS TO Peter Wholley for arranging a last-minute Conference game against The Archway Ladder CC. THANKS TO ALCC for agreeing to travel from their usual north-east London haunts. THANKS TO to Peter W and "Robbo" for making the pitch playable. Reed scored 178 for 7 mainly THANKS TO Tom Greaves (59) and Will Heslam (51), but ALCC knocked it off in the rain with 3 wickets left.
